View Full Version : Does the future depress you?

I was sitting on the couch last night watching my chick play Harvest Moon, a happy litte farming game on the Gamecube, and was overwhelemed with how depressing the future is going to be. She was sitting there enjoying herself as the dog sat on the floor and played with his chew toy. Little did she know that soon enough we will be running through a warzone, avoiding attacks by bandits and invading armies, living on the streets, struggling for food and shelter, and simply praying for a quick death to get us out of the hell we will be in.

Driving home from work I look at the paved roads, (mostly) civilized people obeying the traffic laws, and getting along fine. As I look at it all I think of how soon there will be complete chaos, structure will be gone and the infastructure will collapse. I recall images from a book I read, Lucifer's Hammer, on how once the electrical grid was destroyed and society collapsed the country was taken over by cannibals and everyone who opposed them was killed. Scenes from the movie (and book for lit heads) will become true and simply owning a gun wont be enough as better armed and better organized groups will kill all those that oppose them.

I tried to tell her that soon we will be picking through trash piles hoping to find scraps of food and that she better learn the like the cold because even the jackets we now own will be stolen from us as we try to escape. I thought about the Isralies from the days of Egypt and how I would handle being a slave, if I would simply give up and hope they killed me or if the fear of torture and pain would keep me toiling away in the fields.

The future holds nothing good, things are getting worse every day, all we can do is simply wait for the bombings to start.

Is the order cannibal war, zombie war, robot war? Or does the robot war precede the cannibal war?
Are you sure your dog wasn't playing harvest moon while your chick played with a chew toy?

Robots and zombies are all fantasy.

Just think of Mogadishu or the genocide in Darfur, it's already happening in parts of the world, there is no reason to think it wont happen here.

We've been fantasizing about armageddon for 1000's of years, and each generation's egotism leads it to believe that it will be the one to live through this concept of romantic, retributory endtimes. Lucifer's Hammer was a supermarket novel written by two sci-fi geeks who later used the exact same formula and characters to pen Footfall, about alien invasion.

You do get tiresome

You act like everything is okay but It's not.

People at the gym talk about how bad things are every day, pull the shutters off your eyes and look around you. People are scared, the storm is coming and at this point there is no way to stop it.

Yeah and Darfur I am sure at some point was peaceful but now its a hell hole. Haiti fell apart and no one knows if it will get back together. The world is in chaos.

Fiction with regards to end of the world scenario's usually gets human nature wrong. We will help each other, not don leather, trick out motor cycles and rampage across the county. People who are used to certain things will do their best to get back to that level. Any kill crazy maniacs that do appear ie. members of Jezo gym will be hunted down and killed like the dogs they are by the majority of decent humans who will rise from the rubble and start over

I disagree. We all help each other in manageable events. But when the shit really hits the fan, we will be killing each other for that last barrel of water and we will be eating each other to survive. We'll revert back to our basic animal instincts, because we are, in fact, animals. To think that we've come too far socially is an illusion. You only need to look at situations in poorer countries, and they are the majority of people on this planet.

Look at those poorer countries and the stuff you mentioned happens but is not the norm. Even the worst country on the planet in my opinion Somalia has some semblance of order and general welfare

Somalia is disorder and warfare. Just ask those fighting the Islamic rebels trying to take over the capital.

It's true, we have amazing capability for good, but somewhere very close to you, right now, is someone abusing another human being, just because they can for their own benefit. Our laws only effect those who allow themselves to get caught. And once a natural disaster occurs on the scale of a small meteor slamming into the earth and blocking out the sun for a couple decades? All bets are off. You will kill or either be killed in order to survive. You might not be doing the killing, but someone will for your benefit.

This country's constant state of war doesn't count? Small groups will act kindly to each other. Civilization basically controls the interaction of small groups to allow for a collection of small groups to act together.

Exactly Somalia could be so much worse.

Any natural event that is strong enough to do the things you describe will most likely kill everything outright but even so it will be only temporary

I'm not sure what you're saying here. Our country's constant state of war is keeping our interests in tact, interests which keep our economy going and keeping a majority of its people happy in their homes and streets. It's dirty work and a far cry from our capacity for good. We in America just don't realize it on much of a personal level, even with atrocities happening just south of our border. But are they atrocities if it's the norm?

The future doesn't exist. Why would you allow something that holds no reality in the present depress you?

By obsessing about a dark, dank, dismal world, you are creating one for yourself and becoming mired in it. You are bringing that reality to fruition - not to say that you're affecting the world, but you're affecting your own existence and experience of it.

If you honestly think that it is a potential end, and one that will occur in your lifetime, then all you can really do is prepare some supplies and work on your personal network so that you have as many friends and members of family as possible who will be there to help you out.

But, having gone through times of almost unbearable difficulty, I can say that human beings are pretty damn adaptable. if something that seems unsurvivable becomes our reality, after a short time, we adjust and get used to it and life goes on..it may not be the life we expected it to be, but it's life nonetheless. and we are who we are regardless. people who are positive and focus on the good will continue to do that and will be content and happy and generous in their poverty, and people who obsess about and complain about and can't deal with the shittiness of life will stay in that and just get more depressed.

i hope you can find a way through this, because it sounds like you're imprisoned by a false reality.

How very Lost.

My problem with all of that is none of it matters once the real shit goes down. If you have stockpiles of stuff others will shoot and rob you. If you have a safe room or a bunker, others will blow it up, shoot you, and rob you. Have a car or fuel? It's a ticket to be killed by others. Nothing matters. I just hope I die when it goes bad, that the blast takes me out or the asteroid lands on my head. Survival is the worst thing that can happen to anyone.

The only thing that will help anyone survive is to team up with a large gang of heavily armed people and kill everyone else and take their stuff. Self defense will be impossible without numbers.

It was my actual last day of residency in Emergency Medicine ( actually , here at Metropolitan Hospital on the upper east side) . The nurses told me I had a homeless man who had a problem with his thigh. Well, he actually looked a bit like Tippy Tom, and when I got his clothes off ,I saw he had a massive abscess in his left upper thigh . In this area of rotted flesh were actual MAGGOTS, squirming around.. I undressed him, and examined him fully. Not only were they in a hole in his left thigh, but I found them in his foreskin too. Now the maggots were actually doing good for him, eating the dead flesh , but I showered him down,,and cleaned him up, and appreciated my life so much better.

Because from that time on , if a girlfriend dumped me, or I got fired from a job, or life seemed shitty..I 'd always say this to myself , and feel better

"Well, at least I don't have maggots on my dick"

I so didn't want to read this thread. After seeing my husband in a funk for over a year, I had to do it. He was laid off over a year ago. He worked for the county. He was low on the totem pole when they tossed him out. We're in our young 50's. All he does is sit in lazy chair watching fox news, military channel and cspan. I was let go from my job about 3 years ago. All I hear him say is I'm sad and depressed. I wake up the same way every morning but don't express it. I try to get through the day by doing things here and there. We're almost out of money and my have to sell our house. This house has been in the family since 1929. We also have 2 tenants that will have to find a place to live. One of which is out of work. I'm out of my mind. I'm so glad I don't express it here. I've been out of my mind and doesn't know it. I feel my old ulcer knocking on my door. Sorry for the rant.

Harold says you still have a year left. You can go whoring & drinking until 5/20/11. Then repent like a motherfuck.

Ron scared me today. He mentioned Zombie Jesus. I don't know if I could stop that.
