My wife, brother-in-law and myself fear that my father-in-law, who is in his late seventies and suffering from Parkinson's, is falling victim to bunko artists. Over the last two years he has taken up with at least two women, that we know of, who were about thirty years younger than him.

Now, ordinarily I'd say "more power to the old guy". But if you saw him you'd realize that he is in VERY, VERY bad shape. There is absolutely NOTHING that he could offer a younger woman in terms of companionship except that he is rolling in dough. But again, it's his life right? So, who are we to get involved.

Except that he's been acting a little confused lately and hasn't been making the best of decisions. One of the women he took up with was a Haitian aide at the place he got physical therapy. We went along with that for awhile until we found out she wanted him to go on vacation with her to Haiti and was asking him for money for her sister's orphanage (this was all pre-earthquake). My wife and her brother talked to him and made him see the light, though I get the feeling something else must have happened that he didn't tell us about.

Well, there haven't been any other shenanigans that we knew of until this weekened. We helped him move into a building down by us so my wife can be closer to help him out as his condition deteriorates. Last night as we were helping him unpack he fell asleep, in the middle of doing stuff, as he often does. My wife and I wound up sleeping over because it got so late. At about 3:00 am he gets a call. Mind you, he didn't know my wife and I were there. So we overhear him speaking to "my darling" and giving directions to his new building where he would see her at about nine, and there was also talk of 500 dollars. This morning, when my wife asked him about the 3:00 am call he refused to talk about it and then gave us the bum rush tonight to get us out of the house after we were nice enough to spend all weekend helping him move in.

So, now my wife and her brother have enlisted me to play half-assed private detective. I've been sitting in this parking lot bored out of my head watching the front door of the building to see if anything suspicious happens. What I'm expecting to see - I don't know. What I'm supposed to do if I do see something, or how long I'm supposed to stay here is anybody's guess.

I just thought I'd post this to pass the time and maybe have some form of documention as to what I was doing here in case I wind up with a bullet in the back of the head from some pimp daddy.

Don't know if any of the info on this site would be useful to you but check it out....
http://www.phonebusters.com/english/index.html

What I would suggest is observe/photograph/video from a distance and only immediately intervene if you see your father-in-law be in eminent danger. As absolutely despicable it is to scam seniors (give this (http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/crime/article/782828--second-man-wanted-in-hospital-thefts-arrested)a read if you want to be really disgusted) its not worth getting yourself shot.

Who's the private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks?

SMAILS!

Ya damn right!

God, I'm so bored and I know that this is probably a fruitless excerise but my wife was so freaked out and felt like she had to do something that I rushed out of the house at her first request.

Thanks for the links. I'll check them out when I get home. This might be my payback for all the times I made fun of old people for falling for those Nigerian scams.

If he's incapable of controlling his own money, why don't you get power of attorney or whatever?

That's the thing - we didn't know what was up until this weekend. With the Haitian woman they were able to put the kibosh on it when he started talking about getting a passport to go on a vacation with her. The other woman, who's only fifteen years older than my wife, seemed to just be around for the gifts and the places he took her. But this latest thing which we just learned about today is all new to us. We may seriously have to start going down the power of attorney road.

And can you still post to update us as you're being arrested for loitering and indecent exposure? Cause that would be cool.

That's it. I'm packing it in for the night. I just wasted two hours of my life on something I Knew was pointless. I'm leaving this all in my wife and brother-in-law's laps.

I'm bored, tired and I missed The Simpsons and putting my kids to bed. I'm going home and having dinner (because I'm fuckin' starvin') and maybe rub one out in the comfort of my own home.

Thanks all, for keeping semi-occupied while I was out deep undercover on the mean streets of East Brunswick.

If hes in such bad shape why dont you or your brother-in-laws family take him in to live with you guys? Not judging, Im just curious.

Im all for protecting the guy from scavengers, but in all honesty if they want to stake out their dad it should be them doing it, not you.

If you saw him making out with a Haitian woman, what would it confirm, that he is after sex? But I guess if you saw him hand her a bag with dollar signs on it, it would be more suspicious. Hopefully he is not getting railroaded. I agree that his kids should be the ones to confront him about it.

my parents talked my grandmother
into getting a reputable money-manager

they interviewed several well-respected firms
and then grandma picked the one
she was most comfortable with

they charge like 1% of the asset value
annually, but they do all the work
and it is well worth it

this is a good way to go
so your F-I-L doesn't think
that you are trying to grab
his money

I think the shit's gonna hit the fan today. He just called my wife at work to tell her not to come over today so she "can rest". Meanwhile, he said he's going to find where his bank branch is in our town because he needs to "take some money out.". If it was my dad I'd take the bull by the horns but I don't think its my place emotionally or legally.

it's funny because East Brunswick really doesn't have this type of reputation, with sheisters lying in every corner.

East Brunswick is known for three things: Lots of "diversity", really good schools, and Route 18.

Nope, I've been in EB for going on 12 years now.

Anywho, here's an update for anyone who is looking for some kind of closure on this sordid tale:

The wife and her brother went over there tonight to confront him. Apparently there was a lot of crying on all sides and he gave them a story that I only 20% believe. According to him he met this woman on a chatboard. The call we overheard at 3:00 am was from her because she was "pulled over for a traffic violation". Today he went to the bank, took out $500 and then wired it to her. He says he realizes he was wrong and that it will never happen again but that's exactly what he said when he got scammed by the other lady.

Though my wife was dubious of this story I set her straight that I'm calling complete bullshit on it. First of all, the fact that my wife and I happened to be around to hear that call was a one in a million chance. The fact that that one call was the only time that he was scammed like that, and we just happened to hear it, is one in a billion. I told her that if we know about this one instance - chances are really good that its just the tip of the iceberg of many, many more.

I told my wife that she and her brother need to get control of the money ASAP and while they're at it they need to take away his internet access or at least limit it because he's only going to get himself into more trouble.
