Screw recycling

They gave us recycling bins here at the condos and told us to use them. Today I have the day off so I went to watch the garbage truck people do their thing.

They take the recycling bins, throw their contents into the dumpster, and dump the whole thing into the back of the garbage truck.

Why am I wasting my time separating it like an occident citizen if everything is going to get put in the same place anyway?

Its called single stream recycling. It all gets dumped on a main floor and they seperate the dry from wet garbage. from there the dry is put on a conveyor belt and droped into a shredder then droped onto another conveyor to a trailer which is taken to a recycle facility... the wet is loaded strait into a trailer and taken to a landfil. this way they can reduce the waste taken to that landfil by around 80%. I know this because im a garbage man and we just set a facility up for this..

Until we get a Mr. Fusion, there will always be holes in any recycling system. Humans just aren't that precise to make sure everything goes where it is supposed to go... Look at your closets!

I'm familiar with single stream recycling but from how I've seen its applied all recyclables are kept separate from garbage during collection....i.e. there's a black bin for garbage and a blue bin for recycling. There's no sorting required for the customer just load all your paper, glass, tin cans, etc. into the blue bin and let someone else do the sorting.

Your description sounds absolutely horrific. I can't imagine having to sort though regular household garbage, dog & cat shit, used diapers, tampons, condoms, etc. to get to the stuff that can be recycled.

You really dont have to sort through anything by hand it all gets chipped and shredded... but its its out in the open it goes on one side... if its baged and whatnotit goes into the other side and gets shredded there and still most of gets taken out to be recycled....
