Here's what I found after listening to this week of best ofs; 1) Ant and Jim are right, the callers bring down the show. Ant and Jim would be on incredible runs making hilarious jokes and Opie slams on the brakes by interrupting them to get a caller in who tells either a mediocre line or a bomb. It ruins the flow. But more importantly 2) the main difference between when we all really loved the show and where we are now is a few years ago, even as little as '07 or '08 was that back then they really sounded like they were having fun. The pacing and creativity and laughter they generated is so starkly contrasted with today's shows where no one sounds like they even want to be there. It's sad really.
spoon
09-03-2010, 01:36 PM
disagree on that one ^
Ant just goes on stupid rants and jimmy loses focus and puts 50 "get aids" like jokes out there so Opie is a KEY part of keeping the show flowing, on point and from becoming just two guys making each other laugh all day. When Opie isn't in, I like the show much less than when either Norton or Ant are not. They all have they're place though, but I do miss the old days where Opie and Ant were alone most of the time and comedians/guests like Norton made weekly visits at most.

Agree.
But the callers are more of a minus than a plus.
Opie said on his twitter last night he didn't really care to do another show for Sirius again at this point. Obviously, the end is nigh. They don't want to be there. They don't have contests anymore, they don't try to do anything that involves the listeners anymore. And there's more to it than just the Sirius lawyers interfering... They've just lost their will to even try. Satellite didn't turn out to be the free flowing medium they believed it was going to be, Sirius taking over squashing any hope of that, and they're just playing out the string. Have been for a few years now.

You forgot the part where Opie reads the caller's joke out loud first and then puts the caller on the air leaving them to hang out to dry.

The thing is, in the 'NEW days you couldn't pull away from whatever was going on. It was cringe at it's best. They were always on the verge of getting shitcanned and you just never knew which day was going to be the last. It was all about going against the bosses and the lawyers and pushing the envelope. They were still hungry for their profession and had passion.
Now, and in the past few years, they don't even attempt to be edgy and fear the lawyers because they know Sirius won't care and just flat out fire them. Personally, I think it all started once Eric Logan left. For whatever reason they decided to be the voice of how the media is bullshit, how white people are getting screwed, shit talking anyone else that dares a career in radio, TMZ headlines and boring UFC shit. Outside of that, I don't hear a whole lot else unless a comic is in and then Opie just says things to them like "Mel Gibson.. whattya got on that?".
I guess they realized that terrestrial doesn't want them anymore, at least not for the money they're willing to pay, and if they get canned from the only satellite company, there's nothing left but podcasting and they wouldn't even bother to do it together. Ant wouldn't leave his house and do shows from the Compound until he became the next Tom Metzger. Jimmy would continue to do what he does just fine. And Opie's ego wouldn't allow him to be reduced to a podcast. He'd probably just stay off the air.

Logan leaving and the merger are the two things that screwed them on a creative level. But the lawyers always fuck everything up. Every couple of years there's something that happens that make the laywers clamp down even more.
Wii for a Wii probably replaced Sex for Sam 3 as the "ground zero" of killing radio's creativity, on both satellite and terrestrial.

Shock and Jock - shock and jock! Even in real life.
Once getting out of the car in a bar parking lot - my stomach rolled and I was shitting (like it or not). I just dropped pants right there and shot hot water out of my ass. Some went on the car beside me - I had to get the chick I was with hand me some napkins from the car and she smelled it and threw up. She wanted to leave now but I insisted that we still go in and have a few drinks - I immediately went to the bathroom and threw my underwear away and cleaned up better. The best or worst part was that I was being filmed on security cameras.

When I was a kid, I put some taco bell sauce packets under someone's tire in a parking lot. When they left, it sprayed onto their car a little bit. It's almost the same thing.

You can see where this idea germinated for Opie, because he obviously hasn't been in school in a long time. The people that do their kids homework, and are complaining about their kids having homework every night, are his siblings.
I also have to point out the irony that he's bitching that he couldn't start a band in school (although noone I knew had a problem) and follow his dream and yet he works in the music industry now. Obviously something went right for him.

A few days ago, they were talking about some woman whose husband had hired a man to kill her with a hammer. At one point, Jim said something like "What must she have done to make her husband want to hire someone to kill her with a hammer?" This is a normal stance for him to take, but if you think about it, it's pretty sick. Knowing nothing more than the barest details of the incident, he tries to view the male as the normal one in that he was provoked into putting out a violent hit by the woman. A person with a normal view of gender would look at those few details and assume that anyone who hires a hammer-hitman is the one at fault, not the victim.
But it's hard to have a normal view of gender when you spend most of your adult life supporting prostitution. He often comes out as supporting prostitution, and railing against illegal prostitution/escort services getting shut down, yet he readily admits that he is a sex addict. Given his supposed background of recovery, you would think he would view prostitution somewhat equivocally with illicit drug sales. I guess you can't really expect logical reasoning from someone who thinks that the earth's spin is what generates its magnetic pull.

No no no, I was talking about how Ant railed against him being a Rican with the manual labor route, then forgot he was a construction worker, then the point came up about making a life for yourself, and also that Ant struck the lottery by meeting Op, and Ant somehow thought that by getting super lucky means he paid his dues but more importantly worked hard to get where he is.

Whatever your opinion of Anthony you can't deny that he worked hard. There are a million guys with talent that never make it. Anthony is unique and it wasn't some lottery that had him meeting Opie it was putting himself in a position to not only meet a radio guy, but to use that meeting to build a career.

Actually, from what he's told on air it was his brother that pushed and pushed their parody songs to Opie's show and did the leg work. And since Joe was the musical one and Anthony could do impressions because he just sat around getting high and watching tv when he wasn't slacking off at his HVAC gig, you figure out which was the better choice of who could do shock jock radio.

I have to say Ellis attacking Rawdog's face with a strap on while Rawdog sang "Like a Prayer" was really really funny. It's a shame they couldn't do it again.

lets see if they have the balls to do what they always talk about, which is go all out saying everything they wanted to. i doubt it because they think they might resign, but i hope they do.

interesting....Anthony keeps saying that he can't put the shock collar on because his cardiologist won't allow it.
I remember a while ago Anthony had some heart problems, possibly a heart attack. It was brought up once on both O&A and R&F.

That's what I was referring to...I didn't realize that they had brought it up on the air before.

Both shows definitely talked about it briefly I wish I could remember when I would find the audio.

Since when is covering a song "stealing" it? Wallbash.
Ah, another 2 years of Opie and Anthony!
Jocktober starts today as well with Lamont & Tonelli. Oh Opie and Anthony sure know how to ridicule hacky shows.
Patrice O'Neal is also in studio!
