Book burning is dumb regardless of the book you're burning unless you're only burning it to get a good fire started to stay alive. If these people were smart, they'd put one upside down in a bucket of urine and get themselves an art grant from the govt. Religious intolerance is unAmerican? Since when?

Our troops are already in danger Q'uran burning or not.
Its just another excuse for those animals to pour out into the streets and blame the jews.
You could hand out signs saying "BOMB US INTO SMITHERENES" and they would carry those.

In other words Desecrate any other religion its art. Desecrate Islam, its hatred and intolerance and should not be allowed.
These are the same people who will burn a flag. (Which I believe is their 1st ammendment right) but their panties go in a bunch when something happens to a Q'uran

Well, I kinda think this is akin to yelling fire in a crowded movie theater or saying you want to kill a public official.
You have free speach, but if it does harm and causes major damage, you are not allowed.
You are not allowed to even have the Koran collect dust or even put another book on top of it in Islam.
This would cause catostraphic harm to soilders and Americans anywhere near a Muslim state...
NOT a good idea.

You have Muslims around the world coming around towards the west and America since Obama started trying to bring them closer.
You have a majority young population in Iran that wants to be more westernized and get closer to the west, and eventualy they will succeed..
This will give the Iranian government massive fire power to turn them right back towards them.
This would set everything back decades..
Very, very stupid.

I firmly believe that our American Military will destroy anyone foolish enough to "target" them.
However, we could have a few casualties as a result of this act and so I think it is deplorable. I would be pissed to witness it.

American soldiers are in danger no matter what. Burning the Quran or not doesnt matter. If it does then it proves the point of the people on the right that they are animals and try to force their views on others. I have no religion so to me the Quran, the bible are just fire wood. Why should someone be forced to obey those books the way someone who believes in them does? They dont so let them burn them and burn some bibles in front of them too! They obviously arent respecting our freedoms so why should be respect their beliefs?

my boring take: they shouldn't, but they can, and it won't endanger the troops. it may alter relations with others - but we can't go forbidding them to do it. as crazy as they are, the real nutjobs are the ones who might lose their shit over this.
Never mind the argument about American soldiers being put at risk. I think it's Americans living overseas -- especially in Muslim countries -- who could be in even more danger. There's no protection for them being assaulted verbally or physically just because they happen to be Americans.
foodcourtdruide
09-08-2010, 05:24 AM
I don't understand how the argument becomes the government preventing this church from doing this. Has anyone in government recommended this? Didn't Petreaus just ask that they not do it because they'd be putting peoples lives in danger?
Americans should be outraged at this church for being so irresponsible and so hateful. Burning a religious book? Really? Why aren't we up in arms? We accuse muslim nations for tolerating those who pervert Islam into violence and hate, why do WE tolerate this? Why aren't there thousands of people protesting this church? Why don't we see the same grassroots movement against this church as we would see if someone says "fuck" on Television?

"Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani threatened Wednesday to cut off all city subsidies to the Brooklyn Museum of Art unless it cancels next week's opening of a British art exhibition that features, among other works, a shark suspended in a tank of formaldehyde, a bust of a man made from his own frozen blood and a portrait of the Virgin Mary stained with a clump of elephant dung. "
Everyone exclaiming the right to free speech of this ministry must have surely been up in arms when THE MAYOR OF A CITY THREATENED TO CUT FUNDING TO AN ART MUSEUM OVER ITS CONTENT.
Oh, I'm sorry. I'm not following the typical "when its done to Islam everyone cares, but when it's done to Christianity no one gives a shit" tagline that seems to be so popular.

Military burns unsolicited Bibles sent to Afghanistan (http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/05/20/us.military.bibles.burned/index.html)
Military personnel threw away, and ultimately burned, confiscated Bibles that were printed in the two most common Afghan languages amid concern they would be used to try to convert Afghans, a Defense Department spokesman said Tuesday.
Afghan workers enter a walkway on March 3, 2009, at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.
Afghan workers enter a walkway on March 3, 2009, at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.
The unsolicited Bibles sent by a church in the United States were confiscated about a year ago at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan because military rules forbid troops of any religion from proselytizing while deployed there, Lt. Col. Mark Wright said.
Such religious outreach can endanger American troops and civilians in the devoutly Muslim nation, Wright said.
"The decision was made that it was a 'force protection' measure to throw them away, because, if they did get out, it could be perceived by Afghans that the U.S. government or the U.S. military was trying to convert Muslims," Wright told CNN on Tuesday.
Troops at posts in war zones are required to burn their trash, Wright said.
The military says a soldier at Bagram received the Bibles and didn't realize he wasn't allowed to hand them out. In the Al Jazeera video, which shows the Bibles at the prayer service, an unnamed soldier says members of his church raised money for them.
The chaplain later corrected the soldier and confiscated the Bibles, Wright said.
Military officers considered sending the Bibles back to the church, he said, but they worried the church would turn around and send them to another organization in Afghanistan -- giving the impression that they had been distributed by the U.S. government.
That could lead to violence against troops or U.S. civilians, Wright said.

Yes, they can do whatever they want.. Its their right..
My only fear is the saftey of our troops and other Americans abroad..
As I for you example..
Yea, that happends THERE.
But i think we need to show that we are better than that and will not stoop to their leval..
There is a major diff between an Arab/mid east Muslim and a non Arab/western Muslim..
Non Arab Muslims are much more tolerant and for lack of a better term civilized...
They won't react violantly but burning the book really, really hurts our image with the rest of the world..
We look as bad as they do..

I was just thinking about that last night. Certain people are very quick to throw out the "doth protest too much" reasoning when it comes to the anti-gay crowd, but then in the next thread they rail against anyone who dares mock or criticize Islam (hypocritically, of course, since the same people will not think twice when they shit on Catholics or Scientologists).
I'm beginning to think that like the gay right wingers, they are deeply ashamed about the way they feel inside; that they hate Islam, but won't admit it, even to themselves; and instead take up the extreme opposite opinion, hoping that they can somehow manage to convince themselves it's the truth.

Now you want to be more specific. First you said simply an organization burning bibles. This was reported in 2009. I remember the Christian riots like they were yesterday.
Come on, BM. You are totally reaching here. Would you like me to revise my above statement? Ok, what I meant was:
Also, if you think a non-Christian religious leader threatened to burn bibles in order to denegrate Christianity and no one would care then you are delusional.

The real assholes in this controversy are the news media outlets that even report shit about nut-job stunts like this. Ten or fifteen years ago, this story's biggest exposure might have been on the cover of the Weekly World News.
The subsequent posts in this thread have shown this to be false. The elephant dung Mary was over ten years ago and "Piss Christ" was over twenty.

"A few extremist Muslims" crash some planes into some buildings, behead some people, try to blow up Times Square, crash some boats loaded with explosives into U.S. warships, bomb some U.S. embassys, try to blow up a commercial airliner with a shoe bomb, try to blow up a commercial airliners with an underwear bomb, etc. etc. etc. BUT we can't hold an entire religion or people/country responsible because that makes us racists maaaaannnnnn...
Yet, a church with a couple dozen followers on U.S. soil decide to get some attention for themselves by holding a good old fashioned Nazi book burnin' and we're supposed to expect retaliation against U.S. troops and citizens wherever they may be? Even thought EVERYONE except the church doing the publicity stunt have condemned their actions?

Christians in Gaza Fear for Their Lives as Muslims Burn Bibles and Destroy Crosses (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/285123/christians_in_gaza_fear_for_their_lives.html)
Father Musalam additionally told The Jerusalem Post that the Muslim gunmen used rocket-propeled grenades (RPGs) to blow through the doors of the church and school, before burning Bibles and destroying every cross they could get their hands on.

Muslim leaders condemn Taliban destruction
The Times of India, March 2, 2001
NEW DELHI: Leading Islamic clerics and leaders on Friday condemned the destruction of Afghanistan's ancient Buddha statues in central Bamiyan province by the ruling Taliban regime as "un-Islamic" and "an act of cultural genocide against humanity."
"It is an outrageous act. It should be treated as a crime against humanity. Bamiyan is part of the world's cultural heritage. The destruction of Buddha statues is an act of cultural genocide against humanity," Babri Masjid movement leader and former diplomat Syed Shahabuddin said.
Declining to draw a parallel between the Taliban action and the destruction of the disputed structure at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, Shahabuddin said, "here it was some groups whereas in Afghanistan, the government itself is committing the crime."
"In the entire history of Islam, ancient and pre-historic sites have only been preserved and not destroyed whether it be in Iran, Egypt, Syria or India," Shahabuddin said.
The Shahi Imam of the historic Fatehpuri mosque here Maulana Mufti Mohammad Mukarram Ahmed termed the destruction of the statues as "un-Islamic."
"Islam has always respected other faiths. It has taught us not to abuse other faiths. The Taliban could have either veiled it or asked the Buddhist countries to relocate it if they were so averse to the statues," he said.
Christian leader Rev Valson Thampu said the Taliban action symbolised "selective use of religious prescription". (PTI)

I do see the difference, but I still think people who get up in arms over it are incredibly dumb. Some people value the works of great writers more than holy books. Many of those great writers have had books burned for one reason or another. So all those lovers of those books, of course, did the sensible thing and killed people..

Since 9/11 There have been thousands of Muslim on Muslim attacks. Look what happened starting in 2004 in Iraq when Zarqawi was launching attacks on Shi'ites for example. If I was Muslim I would be more offended that other Muslims were using Mosques as fortresses and ammo/weapons storages like in the Battle of Fallujah than some dope burning a Q'uran

It's not just the left, whenever we start putting limits on our freedoms we diminish everything this nation was built on.
Same thing if we hold one groups rights higher then another's.
It's a slippery slope that we're treading on but all anyone gets tied up in is what side they are on. Arguing so hard to prove your left or right side is the best. Letting the basics crumble around you

That may be it, but anyone who thinks Trump was doing this for anything but some free publicity is outta their minds. The news reported tonight that they bought in 09, but have already received offers that were twice what they paid, that they didn't accept... so Trump offering 25% above what they paid is a BS publicity move.

It reminds me of right-wingers talking about the "Democrat Party": it's an attack, it's obviously meant as such, but if you call them on it, they can say "What? How is that an insult? It's just the name of their religion!"
Uh, no, it's not.

Compared to oil and wood pellets burning Qurans is actually a pretty inexpensive alternative source for heating fuel this winter.

Many Islamic groups have made it clear that they prefer "Muslim", and here's why:
According to the Center for Nonproliferation Studies, "Moslem and Muslim are basically two different spellings for the same word." But the seemingly arbitrary choice of spellings is a sensitive subject for many followers of Islam. Whereas for most English speakers, the two words are synonymous in meaning, the Arabic roots of the two words are very different. A Muslim in Arabic means "one who gives himself to God," and is by definition, someone who adheres to Islam. By contrast, a Moslem in Arabic means "one who is evil and unjust" when the word is pronounced, as it is in English, Mozlem with a z.
I seriously doubt many of the teabagger douchebags who insist on saying "Moslem" knew that about the pronunciation in Arabic, but at the same time, I think it's been made clear in other ways that "Muslim" is the preferred pronunciation, and I don't see why it's such a big hassle to just start pronouncing it that way if asked nicely.

Alright, so one word sounds close enough to another word that a certain group gets offended by that word and demands that society capitulate to their whims?
Gotcha.
How is this any different from the "niggardly" issue?

what does it matter what a word sounds like/means in another language? bimbo means baby in italian, should an italian not use that word to describe an american baby for fear of upsetting the mother? no, they would not care at all what it means in anything other than their language.
that said, i use muslim because it's what has become acceptable in society, i just don't get the need for society as a whole to switch for this reason.
