I'm really proud that he constantly wants to improve his English but couldn't the teacher have chosen a somewhat more, well, modern book? He's constantly asking me questions like:
"What's a thresher?" (He pronounced it "THREE-sher.")
"What is a plowshare?" (pronounced "ploo-SHA-ray.")
"What is hulled?" (Pronounced "HULL-ed.")
I know it's a classic but we've never discussed threshers or plowshares.
He's already tackled The Outsiders and The Catcher in The Rye. If the teacher wants to go young adult why not Judy Blume? I'd love to explain Then Again, Maybe I Won't or Hello God, It's Me, Margaret.
I just hope he doesn't want to be Laura Ingalls for Halloween.

I remember reading some Judy Blume book that spent a suspicious amount of time dealing with the protagonist's wet dream.

Is your husband a 6th grade girl?
Does it sound something like this?

Oh dear lord! My life is a 50s sitcom.
There are some words we had to work on:

He's from Ecuador and he's been here for 2 1/2 years. His English has improved a lot since we started dating. I give him a lot of credit-- it's not easy to pick up a second language when you're in your 40s. I'm trying to learn Spanish from him but I get easily frustrated.

good for him at least he is trying to learn the language. so many people come to America and never even try. Did you think about getting him Rosetta Stone?

I think he's too advanced for Rosetta Stone (and it's really expensive). He's been taking advantage of free/low cost English classes in Jersey City. He's working on getting his HS diploma and got As in both his English classes (and the teacher was really tough).
He laughed at the I Love Lucy clip (I, too, have learned to listen with an accent). He used to watch it in Ecuador (dubbed, of course).

I guess he feels the need to do something at his awful shows other than smash watermelons, but I don't see why.

You are dating a woman from Peru? Somewhat surprising. Some of your immigration posts suggest you aren't the biggest fan of Spanish speaking people from south of the Rio Grande.

Perhaps he's not a fan of illegal immigration? I've never met or heard of anyone who has lawfully earned their residency feel that illegal immigration is a good thing.

Exactly, I am against illegal immigration. She is a permanent resident with an MBA who will be taking her citizenship test in Feb of 2011.
