I had a conversation yesterday about the greatest presidential speeches of all time, thought it would be interesting to bring it to the board. So, based solely about the speech itself, not whether you agree with it or not, what are your favorites? Of course part of what makes you like a speech is whether you agree or disagree, I'm just trying to avoid this becoming a left vs right thread.

I'll start with two that definitely aren't the greatest of all time and were given before the man was actually the president, but that I love regardless:

He was right on the main points. His intentions were good.

But this speech is what doomed his reelection. The gratuitous pandering with the JFK, RFK and MLK references; the gratuitous slap at Nixon; the stern Sunday School teacher's tone; demanding more taxes; more government control of the nation's energy; possible gas rationing. He just didn't know how to sell his proposals.

Agree. People wanted to be told we're great (reagan), instead of being told the truth that we all need to sacrifice.

Agree. People wanted to be told we're great (reagan), instead of being told the truth that we all need to sacrifice.

I always took most every other president's stance as "the people are great." I think Reagan just talked a lot more about the contrast of the US vs Russia which put that type of rhetoric at the forefront.
