And on the Kirk Douglas thing, if he wasn't as in shape as he was he'd be dead now, he never would've lived through his health problems to be 94. There are plenty of 70 year olds who look the same way, so isn't getting anouther quarter century a bit of a triumph?

When they announced it last night, I got the feeling that even the people accepting the award were like, "well yea, thats what we were going for". it felt like they weren't at all surprised....as if it was just part of the process of making that movie that they would be accepting that award. they all seemed very pompous about it. limey bastards.

Why would you spend millions of dollars, assemble an army sized crew, recruit A-list actors, work out a distribution deal, work out an advertising campaign and a press corps just to win an Oscar, which is essentially worthless.
At best winning an Oscar helps you make more movies, WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY SOMETHING YOU HAVE NO TROUBLE DOING TO BEGIN WITH.

If you're looking at it that way, than why would you do all those things you said for the sole purpose of just making a movie? Sure if the movie does really really well, you make a fuck ton of money, but thats still a gamble until the numbers come in. Plus the movie won't stay in the theater forever, so you're only gonna be able to milk that cow for so long. However, you win an Oscar for best picture, you get to make ANYTHING you want into a movie and it basically guarantees your next three films will be wildly successful.

For the most part a significant goal of any movie this size is to make some money. The more you tailor a film to critics the more you limit your popular market, and the less money you will probably make. So arguing that you can make a movie designed solely to win an Oscar doesn't have a real upside to me, its a huge risk.
I think the people who made The Kings Speech said lets make a movie that will have a slow build, will bring in older people (especially since that is the age bracket least effected by piracy) and will do big numbers in Europe because historical European films usually do. We dont have to spend 100 million on it and we can get out with some bank.
Anyone is going to market their awards to the best of their advantage but hinging anything on winning an oscar is really a fools bet.
I also dont think winning an Oscar garuntees you any success in the future.

it just seemed like such a ringer to me. it was a late entry to qualify for this years awards, you had the whole, "powerful man with a major flaw" angle, the historical European angle will draw americans that think watching a movie like that makes them refined and classy somehow, it did big numbers in multiple geographical markets......maybe it was a bit of both, but they HAD to be thinking oscars when they were putting this thing together.
and i'll admit, winning the best pic oscar doesn't guarantee success, it does basically give you carte blanch for your next couple of projects.....anyone in hollywood wants to work with you after winning one of those, you can get any amount of money you need, overall it just becomes much easier to make your next couple of films. for me, when they announced Kings Speech, it was like watching the Yankees win the World Series. They spend the most money and its just expected.

I'm going to go against the grain and agree with the blowhard. I'm 43 and from his neighborhood and like the old days myself. Albums were better because of the size of the sleeves, people minded their own business and stayed 'within,' and it was easy to get laid.
