Seriously, since it's obvious that we can't weed out the assholes from the ranks can we at the very least take the cameras away from these guys? Shouldn't there be a regulation where you're not allowed to take cameras into combat situations?

I'm not condoning this behavior by wanting to cover it up but if you obviously can't stop the behavior, at least try to minimize the damage. Plus, you've got to be another level of asshole to photograph yourself committing war crimes and then letting said photos leak out to the world. I would blame this on the Facebook generation but I guess this goes back to forever.

Back in the 90s I worked with this guy who had served in Desert Storm. One day he brings in a thick ass photo album he called his "trophy book" which was nothing but pictures of dead Iraquis. He thought it was a hoot and was showing it around like someone showing off their grandkids' album. I refused to look at it but soemone told me there was at least one shot of dead women and children.

Mind you, these were taken in 1991, in the pre-digital camera stoneage. So this goober probably dropped off the roll of film at the local Walgreens or something to be developed.

Yes, some idiotic and disgusting humans (actually being prosecuted) in our army out of thousands vs premeditated/calculated torture of prisoners sanctioned by W and his cabinet (not prosecuted), same shit. How thick can one human be? You are surely setting a new standard. Outside of our troops still being there, Obama has little to do with this as well. Ridiculous on so many levels.

Pretty disgusting story. Not sure what can motivate someone like that.

I dont think it was over the top at all. As a matter of fact I think he hit it right on the head. This incident isnt even close to the same thing as Abu Ghraib.

They weren't playful. They were disgusting in their own way.

But I agree that the pictures that are coming out now are disgusting. Is humiliation as bad as murdering? They're both evil.

I don't think Obama had anything to do with this, just how I think Bush had nothing to do with the pictures that came out back when he was in office.

Comparing it to Abu Ghraib is obviously hyperbole, but it's certainly counterproductive to the war effort.
General David Petraeus has all of his officers rread david Galula's classic, Counterinsurgency Warfare Theory and Practice.
In it, Galula recommends harsh, public punishment of war crimes in order to assure the civilians we are on their side.

They are both horrific in their own way.

But Abu Ghraib was torture of terroists sanctioned by the government leaders. Those soldiers at the time were pretty much following orders and taking pictures to joke about it.

Where from what Ive read here these jackasses were just killing civilians for fun, without any kind of directive given from the higher ups. If it were sanctioned they would have no need to do something like plant a grenade on one of their victims.

Also, as the Abu Ghraib guards were bascially still working when those pictures came out, these guys are already on trial and looking at life sentences for murder. They werent doing their job, they pretty much just went rogue and did whatever they wanted. Its not the same.

Neither is obviously a good thing for anyone, but the differences are still clear and valid. Not one person said the pictures, or more importantly what they did, weren't disgusting acts. Not sure where dudes post even comes from.
