View Full Version : Communism in USA yes or no?

Its a hypothetical situation and the constitution would have to be voided & done over via article V convention.

Im not talking about what the AM Radio talkers spout out when talking about Obama and the dang librulz. I mean real Communism

There have been arguements that communism has not worked in countries like the former USSR because it was not practiced to the T. Sure everyone would be equal and there would be job security, equality, but would it be better than our system today? Would there be a complete end to greed? I dont think there will be. By nature man is greedy in some ways.

Here are the 10 Pillars of Communism. There is nothing about freedom of press, religion. Private property rights are taken away. So in my opinion it can never work in this country

1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. Centralization of credit in the banks of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly.
6. Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the state.
7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state; the bringing into cultivation of waste lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
8. Equal obligation of all to work. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of all the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the populace over the country.
10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc.

Communism doesn't work because it is highly idealized. Invariably it is corrupted and the leaders become more important than the revolution and eventually betray the principles.

There's no legitimately successful communist state and likely never will be. Fine idea in theory, but in practice you have people like Lenin or Mao or Kim or Castro who fuck it all up.

I guess I have some time on my hands so here goes:

Communism in the USA (or anywhere on a nation-state level)? No. And no serious person is advocating it anymore (except maybe Noam Chomsky and really not so much even with him.)
That being said I'm not sure where you got your list. It's kind of a hodgepodge of mostly Stalinism with a little Leninism, Maoism, Castro's tactics and a dash of Khmer Rouge thrown in as well. If you want to talk textbook Commie stuff you pretty much have to start and stop with Marx. If you seriously want to understand Marxism have a go at the Communist Manifesto and a Cliff Notes version of Das Kapital. IMO, Marx was like the Michael Moore or the Newt Gingrich of his time - someone who accurately portrayed some of the problems of the society and political systems of his time but who was completely in over his head when it came to coming up with workable solutions to fix them despite their collective delusions of their intellectual grandeur.

I disagree with those who say that communism is fine in theory. I think it is wrong on the same exact point as I think that the laissez-faire capitalists are; that people are primarily rational economic creatures. We are not. We are a jumble of ideas, emotions, superstitions and atavistic desires. We can't be trusted to figure out what the "right" thing is much less do it on a consistent basis.

For a theoretical analysis of how communism could work on a community level you could read Walden 2. However, since communism is largely a superseded theory except as a straw/bogey/man for the Limbaugh chorus your time would be better spent figuring out a new theory on how to fix our problems.

This is extraordinary well phrased and precisely what Marx was. Well done sir.

This isn't specifically related, but check out the book Drive by Daniel Pink, he spends a lot of time on the subject of the rational animal.

His name is Pink so it is right on topic. From the words of Archie Bunker "Pinko Commie"

If you go to wikipedia and read Communist Party USA (established in 1919). You will NOT see what is listed above. However it is an interesting read. Most of it is based on labor and workers rights. Which would come into fruition later on.

I think I voted for Senator Bernie Sanders (Ind.-VT) when he ran on a Socialist platform. Although not exactly the same. At least it broke the mold. And I don't think many have done so from that time.

CP USA is more of a watered down version. It's probably not true communism. It looks like the same platform as the Working Families party

Sanders though he is one of the most left wing members of either house touts the line of Western European politicians, 6 weeks vacation single payer healthcare etc.
