The device, the CelleBrite UFED, is capable of grabbing photos, video, and GPS data from an iPhone in as little as 90 seconds. It is compatible with 3000 different models of phone and can even circumvent password protection. The gadget would be impressive if its use weren’t so frightening, not to mention a frontal assault on the Fourth Amendment, which protects Americans against unreasonable searches and seizures.
The American Civil Liberties Union has long known about the UFEDs, which have been in use since before 2008. In that year, the ACLU filed a request for records on the program, including logs of how the devices had been used. The state police replied that the information would be made available in return for a “processing fee” of $544,680. Funny, no actual documentation in the article of Police using these during "routine" traffic stops.

i could see if the driver caused bodily harm to himself or others, or major property damage, and there was no other sensible reason why the driver got into the accident... if he/she was talking on the phone or texting then it's his/her fault...

I could see texts, or even just WHEN you texted, but rifling thru your pics?

The only way this thing could possibly be used would be by detectives w/ a search warrant.
Not a road trooper.

im gonna guess this is for someone whom they have found something illegal in their cars. Im gonna guess they dont do it for someone pulled over for speeding.
However if they do try to do it for "routine" stops, its as much the fault of the stupid people who give them the phone. Just say no, you cant. They cant do anything about it. Just cause they are cops doesnt mean you have to say yes to their requests

The problem is people that do say no are afraid to get arrested for some fake, trumped up charge. So they just turn them over.

It's nice to talk shit like this, but try saying no. When asked if they had permission to search my car I said no and spent the next three hours handcuffed and waiting for the K-9 unit Sergeants and what seemed like half the Paramus police force to show up. About 45 minutes into the ordeal I tried to explain to the cop I was just pissed off and apologized told him he could go ahead and search. Which was met with "it's too late now smart ass" By the time it was over I was standing on the side of route 17 repacking my car as the cop sat in his patrol unit smiling. My original crime was going towards an exit and realizing it wasn't correct pulling back on the main road. My legal end to all this was a ticket for an expired insurance card.

That is the problem and that is one of the many reasons people dont trust, respect or care about the police!

so file a fuckin harrassment complaint and they wont do that shit anymore. I live in mahwah, Ive had my car searched about 100 times. I know what happens. Its vastly different telling them no you cant search my car when they think they have cause then it is saying no you cant have my phone cause I got pulled over speeding. Big difference

in fact, next time a cop is doing that shit, actually say this is harassment. As soon as you bring out that word, the cops, even if they are just being dicks cause you said no, usually back off cause they are TERRIFIED right now of harassment claims. Next time, just say im being harassed and threaten to call the police and report him to a supervisor and watch the change in his tone
