A wierd thing about hardcore, it used to have such a straight edge or atleast utilitarian base. And that's still there, but it's become so pervasively stoned. I'm saying the idea that limiting smoking is strictly a moral trip nanny state thing is unreasonable. The two points of view I most often hear when smoking is discussed are nanny state and we used to be able to do it.

My own personal belief is that it is unfair to tell a business owner that he must or must not allow smoking in his business. I have no problem with smoking being prohibited on any government owned/maintained property, and the arguments against permissive smoking laws are compelling. You dont ever hear people who are bitching about smoking bans concede any points that I think are pretty valid.

Context is pretty important. What are they attempting vs. what have they achieved. If you think of bands like these as trying to produce a really traditional sound then they're failures, but they're not so the music is very successful.

I think the attraction to this kind of music has to be innate. A lot of the music I love today is admittedly a taste I've aquired, if you played the song I posted at the beginning of the thread today for me when I was 12 I wouldn't have loved it. But I've listened to dissonant, off key music for so long that really tight, in tune, traditional sounds are so not for me.

So my answer is you need someone to play something that is slightly challenging in sound, but quirky and attractive enough not to instantly drive you away, and then let that seed germinate for awhile.

The Breeders actually have some country/country inspired songs.
