Michele Bachmann the winner of CNN's GOP debate in NH
Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann came into Monday night’s presidential debate in the Queen City as an unknown commodity. She left it as the most talked-about candidate in the 2012 GOP field.
Bachmann stole headlines at the start by announcing that she had filed to run for president — skipping the exploratory phase entirely — and then proceeding to command the stage in the first hour of the CNN-sponsored debate with quotable answers on every question asked of her. The crowd assembled at Saint Anselm College broke into spontaneous applause after several of Bachmann’s answers.

Goddamn it that puts me on the side of the Tea Party. Far more than she was an outspoken advocate for Capitalism Rand was a proponent self reliance, human dignity and pride. She backed causes such as a womans right to choose, was virulently anti racist, among many of the other "liberal" ways of thinking. It's about fuckin' time the GOP washed that religious stink off of themselves.

GOP's Tea Party wing bungles Ronald Reagan legacy, dashes hopes for end to debt crisis (http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/2011/07/27/2011-07-27_breakdown_of_debt_talks_can_be_seen_as_republic an_rebuke_to_ronald_reagan.html#ixzz1TJumbe6H)
Interesting read, especially when considering how the Tea Party idolizes Reagan who did some very un-Tea Party things.
Remember, Reagan's policies led to a near-tripling of the national debt during his two terms as President. His administration, according to historian Sean Wilentz, "never submitted a balanced budget" to Congress.

I can't understand anyone who doesn't buy CFL bulbs. We have nothing but CFLs and LEDs inside the house, standard fluorescent in the garage and halogen security lights. Why would I still be using a light bulb with the exact same technology that Thomas Edison had 100 years later? This woman being elected is the most insane thing going in politics today.

It's your choice and not anyone elses.
CFL bulbs have mercury which is an environmental hazard that are supposed to be disposed of specially but what percentage of people will?
I like CFLs and LED lights myself.

Probably nil, but, if mercury was a concern people would be up in arms about coal plants spewing mercury into the air. All the CFL hullabaloo is about people not having a choice, which, oddly enough, conservatives are in favor of right now. Be it logical or not that seems to be the crux of their issue with CFLs.

So they think it's demeaning bc it said queen? or rage? I'm lost bc it's slanted in it's approach, not sexist to me. NOW is insane if they think men haven't been blasted on Newsweek, much less it's the rage part that makes it a dumb/attacking headline. The queen part is a non-story to me and not really a sexist comment here, but a biased one.

As much as Bachmann spews nonsense. This guy I'm sure will get his share in. As well as Rick Santorum. (among others) However they both seem to get a pass.

You know, here is my question for the "God uses disasters to send us messages" nutjobs: why couldn't God just, you know, send a message? Why couldn't He just, I dunno, suddenly appear in the sky above us and tell us exactly what he wants us to do and not do?
Having whole states get trashed by hurricanes and earthquakes seems like a terribly inefficient way of getting your point across.

http://www.freep.com/article/20110906/NEWS15/110906056/Transcript-Teamsters-Jim-Hoffa-s-speech-Labor-Day
There is a war on workers. You see it everywhere: It is in the unemployment, it is in the Tea Party, it is in the people that fight what we believe in. And we see the war in Wisconsin where they try to take collective bargaining from our public employees. We took two senate seats back, we are taking Wisconsin back.
...
We have to keep an eye on the battle we face — a war on workers. And you see it everywhere there is the Tea Party. And you know there is only one way to beat and win that war.
The one thing about working people is we like a good fight. And you know what, they’ve got a war, they’ve got a war with us and there is only going to be one winner. It is going to be the workers of Michigan and America – we are going to win that war. All the way.
But it starts with your involvement, it starts with next November. We’ve got a bunch of people there that don’t’ want the president to succeed, and they are called the Tea Party – the people who don’t want him to do anything right and he is working hard for us.
President Obama is frustrated by what’s going on. Well, guess what, we’ve got the vote. And the answer to what we say is, we remember in November. We will beat the Tea Party and give this country back to workers and America. We can do it together.”
...
We are going to hear from President Obama in a few minutes, and I am so glad that he has come to Michigan because this is where he sees the real America. He looks out on this army of people and you know what I say? President Obama, this is your army. We are ready to march. President Obama, we want one thing: Jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs…(The crowd joins the chant.)
That’s what we are going to tell America…..When he sees what we are doing here, he will be inspired, but he needs help. And you know what? Everybody here has got a vote. If we go back, we keep the eye on the prize, lets take these sons-of-bitches out and give America back to America where we belong.”

The ILWU contends that EGT is obligated to hire its members to run the new terminal under the company’s lease with the Port of Longview. Talks between the union and EGT broke off in January, and EGT this summer hired union workers from the International Operating Engineers local 701, based in Gladstone, Ore., to operate the terminal.
Trying to force a company to hire people from your union... priceless. Really sets the tone of oppressive management taking advantage of it's hard working staff.
Last week, a federal judge ordered a temporary restraining order against ILWU Local 21 in Longview and Local 4 in Vancouver barring illegal picketing against EGT. Union members have harassed and threatened EGT workers numerous times during the dispute, according to the NLRB.
That's a great ruling... Hey, union, no doing illegal stuff to this company! Way to take a stand.

Great article on the modern GOP:
http://www.truth-out.org/goodbye-all-reflections-gop-operative-who-left-cult/1314907779
1. The GOP cares solely and exclusively about its rich contributors. The party has built a whole catechism on the protection and further enrichment of America's plutocracy. Their caterwauling about deficit and debt is so much eyewash to con the public. Whatever else President Obama has accomplished (and many of his purported accomplishments are highly suspect), his $4-trillion deficit reduction package did perform the useful service of smoking out Republican hypocrisy. The GOP refused, because it could not abide so much as a one-tenth of one percent increase on the tax rates of the Walton family or the Koch brothers, much less a repeal of the carried interest rule that permits billionaire hedge fund managers to pay income tax at a lower effective rate than cops or nurses. Republicans finally settled on a deal that had far less deficit reduction - and even less spending reduction! - than Obama's offer, because of their iron resolution to protect at all costs our society's overclass.
Republicans have attempted to camouflage their amorous solicitude for billionaires with a fog of misleading rhetoric. John Boehner is fond of saying, "we won't raise anyone's taxes," as if the take-home pay of an Olive Garden waitress were inextricably bound up with whether Warren Buffett pays his capital gains as ordinary income or at a lower rate. Another chestnut is that millionaires and billionaires are "job creators." US corporations have just had their most profitable quarters in history; Apple, for one, is sitting on $76 billion in cash, more than the GDP of most countries. So, where are the jobs?
Another smokescreen is the "small business" meme, since standing up for Mom's and Pop's corner store is politically more attractive than to be seen shilling for a megacorporation. Raising taxes on the wealthy will kill small business' ability to hire; that is the GOP dirge every time Bernie Sanders or some Democrat offers an amendment to increase taxes on incomes above $1 million. But the number of small businesses that have a net annual income over a million dollars is de minimis, if not by definition impossible (as they would no longer be small businesses). And as data from the Center for Economic and Policy Research have shown, small businesses account for only 7.2 percent of total US employment, a significantly smaller share of total employment than in most Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.
Likewise, Republicans have assiduously spread the myth that Americans are conspicuously overtaxed. But compared to other OECD countries, the effective rates of US taxation are among the lowest. In particular, they point to the top corporate income rate of 35 percent as being confiscatory Bolshevism. But again, the effective rate is much lower. Did GE pay 35 percent on 2010 profits of $14 billion? No, it paid zero.
When pressed, Republicans make up misleading statistics to "prove" that the America's fiscal burden is being borne by the rich and the rest of us are just freeloaders who don't appreciate that fact. "Half of Americans don't pay taxes" is a perennial meme. But what they leave out is that that statement refers to federal income taxes. There are millions of people who don't pay income taxes, but do contribute payroll taxes - among the most regressive forms of taxation. But according to GOP fiscal theology, payroll taxes don't count. Somehow, they have convinced themselves that since payroll taxes go into trust funds, they're not real taxes. Likewise, state and local sales taxes apparently don't count, although their effect on a poor person buying necessities like foodstuffs is far more regressive than on a millionaire.

But the United States has about 1.5 million small businesses, and the vast majority of business owners earn modest incomes. According to the Joint Tax Committee, only 750,000 people – about 3 percent of those who report positive net business income – would be affected by the higher rates.
“The data clearly shows that most small businesses would be completely unaffected by the higher rates,’’ said Chuck Marr, director of tax policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank. “For the last 30 years, we’ve had a tremendous concentration of income at the top for small businesses, just as we’ve seen for Americans in general.”
That doesn’t settle the debate. Even if only 3 percent of small business owners have incomes above $200,000, a raft of other studies show that an equally tiny share of small businesses account for much of the nation’s net job growth.

I'm well aware of what it means, it doesn't cover what you're trying to stretch to. Perhaps you, and whoever wrote the article you're quoting, should learn the difference between revenue, profit, and income.
Then you'd understand that any sort of tax increase that Obama supports isn't going to kill small businesses. Neither is reducing corporate tax rates -- companies are sitting on record amounts of income and there's no corresponding massive job growth.
Raising taxes encourages companies to spend some of that money on goods which increases demand. The other solution is to spur inflation so that money isn't simply left to rot away somewhere.

Fair enough reasoning (no, I don't agree with it)... That said I'm not arguing tax policy with you, I just have a sore spot with the lack of understanding of the definition of small businesses.

As a whole, of course they aren't all racist. However, saying people of a racist bent aren't attracted to this party like bugs to a light is an outright lie. I personally have had conversations with tea party affiliations and some of the things they say are completely out of line. The sad part is most think it's just good politics and national pride versus racist in any way. It really does remind me of extreme religious people who think anything done in their religion's name makes it right.

Do you also have black friends?
It's not "racism" that fuels the Tea Party as much as the concept of "white resentment", which was what fuelled Barry Goldwater and George Wallace and Ronald Reagan, who launched his political career off Goldwater's star. It started when the Feds had to go into the South to enforce Civil Rights and Voting Rights legislation, and it festered when every right-wing demagogue worth his salt blamed the nation's problems on the straw men of "welfare queens" and other assorted poor minorities (which in these days is illegal immigrants), instead of out-of-control defense spending combined with massive tax cuts that created huge deficits.
The modern conservative movement does not exist without either of those three mentioned, all of whom played off fears of Federal Government "interference" to establish their political agendas of making sure as much money stayed in the hands of the top earners as practicable.
And Herman Cain has as much of a chance of winning the Republican nomination as I do. He's the poor man's Alan Keyes.

So the answer to solve farm labor problems are workers from a temporary program and convicts? Well gee, if it can work well enough to fight fires (http://jacksonville.com/news/georgia/2011-10-09/story/camden-county-considering-inmate-firefighter-program-0), I guess the problem is solved! More convicts please!
Early this week, he took the first volunteers to a sweet potato farm in Cullman just to see how it worked. On Wednesday, a team of five tackled a tomato farm. And on Thursday, about 20 people showed up and sales and marketing manager Malinda St. James, who was answering the phone in the office, said she had pages of names. Participants included recent college students and others who were unemployed
He'll likely have requests for help from other farmers, such as Jeff Smith, who also grows tomatoes on Chandler Mountain. He said his farm usually has about 47 people picking tomatoes at peak times, but the workforce dropped about 30 percent when the law was passed and another 30 percent when the court ruling came through.
"It's a huge problem. We're just picking up who we can and getting them in the field," he said. "Next year, if something's not put in place, we'll probably go out of business."
My point still stands.

A company spokesperson says the illegal immigration law is causing some impacts on the Albertville plant. Since Wednesday some Hispanic employee's who are American citizens have not shown up for work. Job applicant Ashley Avila is looking for work, she is married to a Hispanic who is an illegal immigrant.
"Well I came to look for a job because my husband lost his construction job" Avila said. "They told him he couldn't work anymore because he's illegal and he's about to be deported to Mexico".
Again, does not disprove what I've said.
The price going up or not is a moot point. What matters is there's produce rotting on the ground and farms about to go belly up because no one's there to pick it.

Again, does not disprove what I've said.
And it doesn't matter if the price goes up or not. What matters is there's produce rotting on the ground and farms about to go belly up because no one's there to pick it.
Legal residents and American citizens who dont show up for work are just plain stupid. They can not be deported
For illegals, fuck them too. They knew they were coming here illegally.
Did you see that picture of American citizens filling out forms at the job fair for that chicken processing plant? Those arent convicts or on work release.
Again. With the guest worker program, Any business relying on cheap illegal labor deserves to go out of business.
The article from FAIR proves that $10 apples will never happen. Just scare tactics from the open border pro Amnesty crowd
These jobs were here before the illegals, It was just the greedy business owners who wanted to play slave wages and exploit workers because they have no one to complain to.
They can move to Texas and CA. Perry and Moonbeam will reward them with in state tutition
it's not $10 apples, it's $.50c apples or whatever. The same way people are fine with outsourcing jobs because it makes our HDTVs $50 cheaper. People just want cheap shit and don't care about the long term impact.

Problem is if the corporations were willing to take a little less profit they could do both, have their products built here by Americans and sell them to consumers at a reasonable price. Their greed is the only thing standing in the way.

I completely agree with this. The $14 head of cabbage is a total myth. If an Illinois nail manufacturer can make nails for only a 1% difference in cost compared to the Chinese makers, how the heck is there going to be a 2600% increase in the cost of produce.
I just finished living in Japan for 5 years, they had expensive domestic produce, but the quality of fruit was infinitely better than American grocery store produce and the cost difference was like 50%-200% higher than US prices. Big deal. I discard so much grocery produce in the states due to poor quality that I essentially pay the same I did in Japan.

So you agree with WF?
I agree with WF on many things actually, but in particular this. I'd rather pay 25% more on produce if it meant that the people working the farms were making at least minimum wage instead of being transient/undocumented workers being exploited for the maximum possible profit margin.
That's the big problem with supply side/trickle down economics. There's no incentive to pass the savings along to the consumer. It's better to show higher profits to shareholders/investors than it is to reward customers with lower prices. After 30 years of this I'm not sure why people aren't interested in looking at demand side economics once again. The vast majority of the country is less wealthy than their parents and that trend looks to continue.

The big problem this populist claptrap is that it ignores globalization entirely. We're sure as fuck trickling down, but we're trickling on the developing world. You're ignoring the hundreds of millions raised out of ACTUAL poverty and instead you're obsessed with a bunch of first worlders who can't keep up with the Jonses.
You can label it with whatever pejoratives you'd like, but the "race to the bottom" is, in fact, the equilibration of the global labor market, and there's no stopping it. You can throw up your trade barriers to ensure you get to keep your piece of the pie, but you're doing it at the expense of human misery around the globe.
But hey, power to the (chosen) people, am i rite?

If I might add, I dont think prices for lettuce would go up 20%, but I would not mind paying a little more knowing that my tax dollars wouldnt be pissed away for the education, healthcare, food stamps, welfare, school breakfast and lunches, housing subsidies, prenatal care etc. Plus add in the cost of imprisonment, youre talking hundreds of billions of dollars.

So, America should impose poverty on it's own citizens to help others out of poverty? Furthermore, do you honestly think that Chinese, Indians and Mexicans aren't still in destitute poverty even though they're making goods for western consumers? It's not like Intel or Nike comes over and immediately uplifts an entire area to middle class standards. It's arguable that they don't even lift an area up at all because they pay extremely low wages and once the workers demand higher wages, the factory simply moves elsewhere. Plus, you have instances like the AMD factories in the Phillipines that had such deplorable safety standards that workers were being maimed left and right or Fiji water literally supporting a military junta or bauxite overflows/spills like the one that happened in Hungary or Brazil not too long ago.
I admire you for publicly taking the typical stance of "well it's our duty to hurt ourselves to help others" but you have to step back from the talking point and look at the conditions in the areas that are being "developed" by global trade. Getting people off of subsistence farming and into factories in under a generation isn't a way to create better living conditions for a society; it's just a way of exploiting poor people so that companies can have ever-increasing profits. Eventually we're going to run out of people to exploit for low wages, if we don't run out of natural resources first.

I don't give a shit about other people. I care about my ideology of freedom, and care about the consistent, universal application of it. I don't pretend I care about "equality" and then apply it only to one certain political boundary I happen to be a part of.

Any other conclusions you've drawn are faulty.
Violent coercion? Where is that coming from?

Condolences to the family of Steve Jobs. That being said, I am sick to my stomach hearing every news outlet, talking head, and 'common man' deify this man simply because he was innovative and wealthy. This world has an unfortunate habit of idolizing the super-rich, regardless of the cost at which that wealth was gained (i.e..George Stienbrenner). "He was a pioneer"...."He was a genious"...and f...rom our President---"By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity." Really? After resuming control of Apple in 1997, Jobs eliminated all corporate philanthropy programs. Then, with his spirit of American ingenuity, he decided to ship ALL production jobs that were based in the U.S. overseas--for higher profit margins, of course. So, in conclusion, thank you Steve Jobs, and Phil Knight and so on...for doing your part in making America a third world country

I dont want more for less. I want products at a fair and reasonable price. Thats greedy now? Im not asking for a $10,000 Ferrari but I think if companies used American workers and the products prices were still affordable it would benefit everyone involved. The problem is the corporate mindset isnt about helping people or country, its about squeezing that last fucking dime out of peoples pockets. If that means going to another country so they can pay slave wages, so be it.
Its not enough to have a successful company and just make money anymore. Its about hoarding as much profit as humanly possible even if that means basic humanity and responsibility has to take a back seat. I mean, there is a difference between capitalism and complete corporate greed, isnt there?

This is just magical thinking, so I don't see much point in answering. Globalization is a reality. If you want America to have a greater share in manufacturing, then you need to roll back the myriad regulations that prevent us from competing in that market. But that wouldn't fit into your blue collar Bruce Springsteen mythos, now would it?
Alternatively, you could erect crippling trade barriers. God only knows what happens at that point, but you can bet other countries won't be too eager to buy from us, or sell us the other shit we CAN'T obtain domestically. How well do you think we'll fare when no one is willing to sell us oil? Do you really think this will lead to anyone being better off?
The problem is the corporate mindset isnt about helping people or country, its about squeezing that last fucking dime out of peoples pockets. If that means going to another country so they can pay slave wages, so be it.

As Smith said, “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we can expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.”
Nothing has changed. They are succeeding because they give customers what they want. If customers wanted "humanity and responsibility," then that's what they'd deliver. This is the only part I agree with. Nobody gives a shit about other people. Never has. This is why the country is doomed. It is just going to get worse. I dont think its about "making yourself feel like a victim" though. I think the country has let down its people and as long as it doesnt effect them, most people dont care.
Its like everything else. Nobody cares about the smoking ban, unless they smoke. Nobody cares that pot is illegal, unless they smoke pot. Nobody cares about higher taxes on soda, unless they drink soda. Thing is, as the country deteriorates, it will eventually effect more people. Thats when they will begin to care. By that time it may be too late, who knows.
And yes if I was king of the world and could do whatever I wanted I would outlaw these companies from outsourcing their jobs. Too bad theres no way it could ever happen.
