The writer of this article is upset that Herman Cains former company makes light of Americans of Italian background being assiciated with the mob.
As someone in that demographic who cares? Some dopey Pizza chain making comericals in spoofing the godfather doesnt bother me.

Of course it is. Theres nothing Italians hate more then whiny people who happen to have an Italian last name, claiming the entire Italian base is offended by something we enjoy. There will never be an Italian version of Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton in this country. Because we embrace our stereotypes. We laugh at them the way they should be laughed at.
And we enjoy books, movies and tv shows that celebrate Italian life. Even if its molded around mob stories or pizza restaurants. These dumb fucks are the same ones that tried to have the Sopranos taken off the air when a huge part of its fanbase was Italians. They were fighting the same group they were claiming to respresent.
Dude is right, the blacks and gays could learn a few things from the Italians on how to deal with stereotypes.

Another was

For the most part you are both right. Italians came to this country, were treated like shit and just did what they had to do to better their lives rather then bitch about it and get shit for free. I think thats why so many Italians seem to be against others getting shit for free because they feel they were treated the same way as the current minorites but never wanted nor got anything handed to them. They were also 1 of the 1st that came here and embraced being American and learned the language. That another thing that pisses Italians off about the current immigrants. Instead of learning the language they do everything to avoid it.
This all being said the Italians dont always just laugh at themselves or not take offense. Does anyone remember not even 2 years ago all the shit that the Italian American orgs tried to pull against Jersey Shore? They tried hard to keep it off the air and were very upset with the term guido and how the show portrayed Italians.

Did you post this while sitting at a restaurant in Little Italy?
All immigrants integrate up to a point, but they bring something to the proverbial melting point. Italians are still non-whites and Catholics -- they're certainly on the inside looking in with a fair amount of racial prejudice against them. As much as against blacks? Not by a longshot. They're still not integrated because their skin tone is different and, stereotypically, aren't Protestants. They're not particularly more integrated than Hispanics because of that. Sure, speaking English helps but there's still dividing lines that are clear to WASPs.

I agree with all of that (Except Little Italy, haven't been there in awhile) Italians have never been considered white (only recently have the 2nd and 3rd generations called themselves white) But for the most part they were treated and talked down to like shit for years.

My great-grandparents came here from Italy around 1900. They never went back to visit Italy and gave their kids American names. They said "we're American now". And while their parents spoke very little English, none of my grandparents or their siblings speak Italian. Which kind of sucks because all the Italian kids I know whose folks came over in the second wave speak both English and Italian fluently. I'm the only one in my family who spoke Italian so I could translate my great-grandparents' old letters.
I've said this before: I've been to parts of the world where people can speak two or more languages fluently. We do ourselves a disservice but not being as capable.

There are more genetic differences within ethnic groups than between them, so the idea of which ethnic group we belong too exists in the mind more than the body.

Exactly how my family was. My father was the only child to speak Italian because he was the oldest. He never taught it to us but once we became adults he regretted that and wish we spoke both. The rest of his brothers were 1st gen and werent taught it. My Grandparents spoke only English to them. They were very proud and loved Italy but they would say the same thing "We are Americans" and they were so proud to be here and to be able to say that.

We actually are getting too sensitive, now that I think about it. We're getting too sensitive to other people being offended. When someone pipes up to say they're offended the whole situation gets put on trial, and everyone needs to decide who's right and who's wrong. It creates this instant cultural debt and then the people act as jury trying to assign that debt to the offended or the offensive. We've completely lost sight of how subjective it all is. The truth is something is offensive if it offends someone, it is not universally offensive, it is not eternally offensive, it is situationally, arguably, conditionally and only personally offensive. You cant blame people who are offended getting together and trying to assert themselves any more than you can blame a company for not wanting to alienate its customer base or an artist for wanting to exist outside of any constraint. The only people who is wrong is us, who have nothing to do with it, but still want to argue about it.
We are finger pointing little douche bags and every ounce of accusation we heap on someone who complains about hearing a gay slur, or someone who makes edgey jokes, is our own projected self loathing. These situation only exist for the audience that forms around them, like a gaper delay on the opposite side of the highway.

You know why? Because if the person being offended complains, and everyone else keeps quiet, that person gets their way. When people like the asshole that wrote this article complain, I think the best thing that could happen is that trail of comments telling him to shut the fuck up.

Its funny, I know people like this. That came over and just wanted nothing to do with Italy anymore.
My dad came over here when he was 17. My grandmother STILL doesnt know how to speak english. She never had any interest in learning it, something my dad always criticized her for. My father learned the language and loves it here, but still has an appreciation for where he came from and has gone back plenty of times. Ive been there 3 times myself. His hometown is beautiful but poor.
I never understood the people that wanted to leave and "become just Americans". I can only imagine the time in their home town wasnt very happy and they would rather not remember it.

I understand you are what you are. My point is we are a product of our environment more then anything else. An Italian American from Texas is a different animal from an Italian American from Jersey. Just like a guido has always been considered an Italian American but truly there are tons of guidos that are other races. Its just that the guido culture was more represented in areas with more Italians and looking at most guidos you would think they were all Italian but they are not! So you are your environment!

A nationality is what nation you were either born in or descended from. You cant "be Italian" because you were raised by Italians. You cant just "be Irish" if youre raised by Irish people. If your descendants are from Italy, youre Italian. If they are from Ireland, and youre born and raised in Italy, your Irish-Italian.
To me it matters because those that abandon their heritage and try to claim one they like better just seem like self loathers to me. You can be Polish and love Italian culture. You can adopt it from the food, the style, even the language. But you should still be proud of what you are. Dont deny your heritage because you like another countries more.

If your descendants are from Ireland, and you're born and raised in Italy, you're still Irish decent, just an Italian national.
They're not abandoning their heritage, it's just a choice people make. But Roseblood is right - they're artificial concepts. I may be of Irish decent, but the only thing I have in common with Irish nationals is my name (and even that had an O' attached to it at one time, no more.) I'm American. Everyone born and raised here is - when they're ancestors came from doesn't matter, because if it truly did, technically - we'd all be Africans.

Yea youre an American, of Irish decent. I dont think anyone here is claming to be a true Italian or anything like that while not being born there. Just like Im an American of Italian decent, where my dad is just Italian. But you cant just turn around and say, well I was adopted by Japanese people, so Im Japanese American, and consider that truth.
