So I just realized I'm going to miss the next UFC PPV which is Edgar vs. Maynard. It sucks cause Edgar is a Jersey guy and I'm a huge fan of his. I have a wedding that night to attend which is going to be possibly one of the best I ever get to go to, so it's not a terrible trade off. Still though, I feel like only an incredibly drunk night with great friends, cigars and expensive scotch, some party favors after the reception, followed by an all night threesome with two brides maids could equal things out.

fuck it.....I'll order it and watch it on sunday.

mornin buddays.

And since you're here early vote for my friend to play as part of a showcase at the 9:30 Club in DC.

She's doing well but bands have started to realize that you can just make up any old email address and vote like 5 times in a row as long as you hit 'sign out' after each vote and use a new fake email address.

Lord knows I dont ask you'se for much.

I hate those big grey and black Canadian Geese - fucking snakes with wings!

I had a run in with one on a green at the golf course. It jumped on my back when I had my back turned and was trying to bit me and beating me with it wings!

I tripped in my panic and it came off of me once I hit the ground. Then it hissed and charged me but it was no match for the putter I had.

Ron and a lot of people have a stick our head in the sand approach to bullying because it's going to be such a huge undertaking when they want to actually address it systematically. Kids can get bullied over anything, its incredibly nebulous so you cant just protect certain groups, you need really legit guidelines and then a lot of manpower to enforce them.

Maybe he's questioning why the suicide occurred. It's not a sane thing to do. Are kids driven insane by bullying, or are they already fucked up?

First time I got bullied I was told by a bigegr boy that he was going to whip my ass tomorrow. I went home and cried to my Mom and she coddled me - my stepdad told me to fight back that I was the only one that could stop it.

Thank god I listened to him becasue the next day, that bully was ready to beat me up but I hit him in the face first and he cried like a bitch. That was 6th grade and I learned to stand up for myself.

realmenhatelife
09-27-2011, 10:38 AM
Rons one legit point is that the martyring of bullied suicides really validates the behavior. Kids are naturally attention seeking, they romanticize suicide, we all did when I was young. But the way my generation had aids and drug classes future generations will have bullying classes, and it will work. Fez is wrong and ron is wrong, that's what makes it sso aggrivating to hear.... again.

For every story like this there are 5 where the kid tried to fight back and got the shit kicked out of him.

The year after I graduated high school, a freshman was getting picked on by a junior because he was threatening his spot on the football team. When the older kid tripped the freshman in the school courtyard, the kid fought back and the fight was quickly broken up by a teacher. Then the junior and 4 of his buddies jumped the freshman on his way home and put him in the hospital with a broken jaw, broken ribs, and a punctured lung.

I'm surprised that I haven't heard really anyone say anything about the possibility that passing legislation where "bullies" will be held accountable for a kids suicide if there is enough evidence, would actually give confused kids another reason to off themselves. That law passes and I'm sure there will be kids who start thinking, "I'm getting bullied by this kid, so if I kill myself, he's going to jail for a long time".

They have brought people up on charges related to 'causing' suicides. I know they charged the guy and the girl in that Rutgers suicide.

I dont think kids are this logical, "I'm going to frame that guy for my murder." I think they think "They'll all be sorry when I'm gone, everyone will love me when they realized what a special thing they threw away."

I dont know how far I would say to take it, but we cant as a society makes gestures that prop up the bully either. So I dont think we could legislate the idea that one person cannot be heald acountable for someone elses suicide. I'm not saying we make laws that aggressively go after that either, but we're definately walking a fine line in an emerging issue. I dont think there's enough institutional anything in place right now to be having the reaction that people have on both sides of the issue.

This thread is rife with political correctness Nazism ;>

God, how I miss the halcyon days of my youth, running the gauntlet of bullies on the way to and from school.

Catching a playground beat-down was pure bliss compared to the "adulthood" of dealing with divorce attys, tax assessors, code enforcement officers and crotchety state-troopers.

Loved the "My Bodyguard" caller a couple of days ago.

I remember getting caught for fighting in Jr. High, taken into the schools vault, and bent over a chair while the Principal gave us each 3 licks on the ass with a big-ass wooden board that had holes drilled in it.

Do they still spank kids with big-ass wooden boards?
Was it really that barbaric?

No, but it's their fault for not being tougher. Man up!

I actually agree with this. Sorry, but you dont get to blame a fucking suicide on someone else. Its that persons own fucking weakness that caused them to do that. When you start blaming bullies then you give credence to all these weaklings that have killed themselves in the past because girls broke up with them, or theyre parents took their shit away, or because they did bad in school.

Its not a credible excuse.

I see the exact opposite. Kids can get bullied over anything. And they will. So instead of always just trying to stop the bullies, most of the time just others kids themselves that you should also be trying to teach, more effort should be put towards teaching kids to stand up for themselves. Thats the problem. Everyone wants to solve bullying by having other people handle the kids problem for him. Thats not how you prepare a kid for life.

You have to do both. You have to teach coping skills to kids who are going to get bullied and interrupt bullying behavior. A kid doesn't bully another kid because they're a malicious bastard, these are underformed people and different things in their life cause them to bully, or to be succeptible to bullying. The bully is just as damaged as the bullied in a lot of way, and it's going to be beneficial to everyone to deal with the behavior.

I hate to get all Christian Sciency but once you name the illness you make it real. We have to deal with this bullshit now whether we like it or not, and only when we bring it full circle are we ever going to be able to decide "Well that was stupid and frivolous." You cant interrupt the life cycle of this thing now, its beyond being a purely intellectual concept.

It isn't as big of a deal as people are making it, things change all the time and we always have to adapt to new problems and ideas. People used to give birth in their home and treat every cold with whiskey. We decided we would try soemthing new and it's worked out. We're doing the same thing with this, treating bullying differently now is going to yield differnt individuals down the line, we're goiing to see if it's better.

See I agree with this, but I feel it contradicts youre previous point about strict guidelines and lots of manpower to enforce them. When I see that, I see zero tolerance. I see a kid getting suspended for putting a KICK ME sign on somebodies back. I see teachers and parents blowing every bit of child interaction completely out of proportion if their kid just isnt a popular kid.

Its come to the point where people just do not want to accept that their kid isnt popular. They are the nerd. Or the ugly kid. Or the outcast. Instead of just loving their kid for who they are and supporting them, they want the schools to change so that they basically force the other children to accept their child as part of their group and make him one of them. It will NEVER happen. Because kids dont hold back. And trying to force them will only make your kid a bigger outcast.

Instead teach your child the value of self worth. Of not giving a fuck what other people think. Of being proud of who you are and what your interests are. And teach them to stand up for themselves and how to defend themselves because at some point, when that kid has had all he can take, a perfectly thrown jab to the bridge of another kids nose can end all of your bullying problems in about 3 seconds flat.

The reason why you need strict guidelines is because kids have no sense of judgement. If you present a kid where behavior x is conditionally wrong, he's going to explore every corner of those conditions he possibly can just as a little game. When you introduce a new idea like this you need to give a kid boundaries so they can understand it.

I dont think parents should be excluded from this kind of education. Again point to Say no to Drugs or AIDS education in the 80s and 90s, parents needed to be educated too.

And yeah parents are going to overreact and it'll be up to administrators to figure out what is legitimate and what is not. But this isn't just a problem of little gay kids and little unpopular kids. Like I said the bully needs to learn coping skills as much as the bullied, because they're fucked up too. And kids aren't thinking the same way as adults, so where you see a popular kid who has a lot going for him still may feel very troubled. Why would it ever be acceptable to tell a kid to settle for less? It never has been before. If you tell a kid that he's getting picked on because he just isn't popular or likable enough thats validating the treatment he's getting and it will fuck him up 8 shades more royally than anything else that's already happening to him.

I dont at all agree that the system works now, has worked recently, or even really worked in the past. The golden years where kids hashed things out with their fists and took it like men or gave as good as they got has really yielded some bullshit. From repression in the 50s up until Columbine, the system has been broken for a seriously long time, I think it's laughable to suggest we raise better kids with some lord of the flies mentality.

I will get a little more high concept. We go through life perceiving it as a slow struggle to an ultimate goal after which we can relax and reap the benefits of that struggle. The truth is our life is more about maintaining equilibrium until we can no longer maintain it and then our life ends. We have many short term goals and we adopt the illusion of long term goals to cope with the uncertainty of that precarious balance. A long term goal gives us the promise of final, lasting satisfaction and excuses our dissatisfaction with both ourselves (I'm still working towards my long term goal) and the fleeting nature of short term rewards (It's ok I dont feel so happy about my new car anymore, I'm headed for bigger things and that will last.)

So when you throw out an issue like this that suggests that things inevitably change, even the things that I called familiar were changes to those before me, that what was serviceable to me may not be so for everyone else and therefore maybe wasn't sufficient to my needs either, and really here's a big problem I dont know how to solve and when the fuck does it end anyway? I feel like I'm not getting any closer to my ultimate happiness because of all these problems that keep cropping up- Well that just reminds us of the fragile balance we're trying to maintain and simultaneously forget in our own lives.

Ironically we're demanding that children shut up and deal with it because we're still thinking of ourselves as children. The generations before us felt all the same things that we do, all the same resentments of the selfless effort they had to make to provide a better world to the next generation without so much as a thankyou, but they kept their mouths shut about it. We're really counting that responsibility and stoicism can skip a fucking generation. We are the resentment generation.
