No they won't Udog. They'll use the money to lock up Jacoby and sign free agents
Or they'll let him walk because he wants "too much money".
Who cares?! That money is a drop in the bucket to what the Red Sox bring in worldwide.
I want an owner that treats the team like a toy, not like a fucking investment.
They're going to blow up this team and fill it with AAA talent. But at least they won't be spending money! And then they'll raise ticket prices again so they can "pursue" talent.
How can you possibly complain about the amount of money this ownership has spent since they took over ? They've been in the top 3 in salary for the last 10 years.
Yes you can complain about WHO they spent the money on but certainly not that they don't spend.

The only thing I don't like about this deal is that the Red Sox weren't able to somehow include Lackey in it!

That might be L.A. now 250 Mil. what I heard.
Fuck this team. If they trade Gonzalez, I'm done.
Run two people out of town, hire a clown manager, leak "stories" about the locker room and make the fans turn on the players, then dump all the salaries. The ownership for this team is a bunch of fucking scumbags.
Fuck this team. I'm going to start rooting for the Nationals.
Stop stealing my bit.
At first, I was furious about this deal mainly for getting rid of Gonzo. His flaws aside, he still managed to be one of the few bright spots this season. And what bringing him here cost the team: giving up top prospects Casey Kelly and Anthony Rizzo, cutting Adrian Beltre and Victor Martinez loose and, eventually letting Youk go, I didn't like the idea of giving up on him after barely 2 seasons.
But what I've heard and read since that this was the only way to dump Beckett and Crawford (read: cleaning up Theo's mess), then I guess I'm OK with sacrificing Gonzo. Now if they can dump Lackey and Dice-K and even use some of these new Dodger pickups as trade bait to reload the minors, I'll be even happier.

I agree with all of this. Unfortunately getting rid of Lackey won't be so easy since he is coming off of Tommy John surgery. Maybe in the spring.
On the bright side, isn't Dice-K's contract up at the end of the season ?

So you are saying even though they have been in the top 3 in salary (above the luxury tax) they should be spending even more ? And you would rather pay Beckett $34 million for the next 2 years and about $20 million/per that Crawford was due over the next 5 years than "dump" their salaries ?

I think he meant "spend wisely" - not overspend the way Theo did because he thought he had to compete with every one of Cashman's moves.
The Crawford deal was one thing: paying big for a free agent who turned out to be a bust. Gonzo was the makeup deal for not getting Texiera. They gave up a lot to get him but, unlike Crawford, he actually produced.

Absolutely. They need to spend their money wisely. It is obvious to me that the money that Beckett was due in the next 2 years and probably to a lesser extent, Crawford was due over the next 5 years, would not be money well spent. Unfortunately they had to part with Adrian Gonzalez (who's contract seems like a bargain) to get rid of the other two.
Well it's official now. And I guess Loney is still a pretty good pickup -- along with the 2 pitchers.

is that really that hard? Thats like bragging you lead the astros in a bunch of offensive catagories.
Besides, no, Papi is leading them in almost everything, he just has been out too long to continue to qualify. I know AGone had turned it on the last month or 2, im more fuming from how he had fuckin 6 HRs at the ASB and just generally didnt look like he gave a fuck. I hate when athletes do that. Maybe someone got to him and woke him up after that but it still happened. Its the same thing that makes it really really hard to like Carmelo Anthony even when he is killin it droppin 40 cause I know he is the kinda douche that would quit if he felt like it.
where I started to really sour on AGone is last season when he came out to bitch about how unfair the schedule is and all the night games and whatever BS crying how he has to do something EVERYONE ELSE HAS TO DO. then he spent the entire month of sept either striking out or hitting weak slap grounders all over the fuckin infield. it just turned me off to the point where i didnt like him. And he has a douchey face
So they're thinking of shutting down Papi for the season. Works for me. Do the same for Pedey and bring the kids up from Pawtucket. They'll be hungry anyway. Mauro Gomez had been doing a nice job at first and let's get Iglesias some burn at SS.

thats how i took it. Thats why i dont get all the anger. Was AGone producing, yea he was, but he wasnt worth that deal. Not the way he was end of last year and early this year. plus he is gonna be 30, that deal, couple with crawfords deal, woulda really fucked the sox up in a few years. Now its all gone with a snap.
I can understand UDs sentiment if they sit on it and do nothing. But if they go out this offseason and use that extra money to try to improve and bring in better players, then not only am I fine with the deal, but I love the move. Basically, we just got to hit the reset button without saving.

exactly.
Gonzalez was the only one that the Sox traded that was producing and he wasn't producing anywhere near his pay grade. I think Crawford has a good chance to play well after his surgery but even if he does, the recovery time will be another $20 or so unproductive million. Beckett certainly pitched well in the past but the signs weren't good for the rest of his contract.
Now Aceves is becoming a head case? It never ends.

Why couldn't Aceves been suspended for the rest of the year?
As for Tek, he would make a great bullpen coach to start with his knowledge of pitchers and morph into a manger. Though the Sox already have Gary Tuck in that position who everyone claims is one of the best.

The 2010 season was his last.
I always hoped that Tek would someday be the manager -- ideally becoming Tito's bench coach and then replacing Tito when he stepped down.
The biggest strikes against him would be his lack of coaching experience (at present) and the fact that as Captain, he couldn't get the club motivated last September during the meltdown.

"This year's won-loss record reflects a season of agony," Red Sox president Larry Lucchino said. "It begs for changes, some of which have already transpired. More will come. We are determined to fix that which is broken and return the Red Sox to the level of success we have experienced over the past decade.
"Difficult as it is to judge a manager amid a season that had an epidemic of injuries, we feel we need to make changes. Bobby leaves the Red Sox manager's office with our respect, gratitude, and affection. I have no doubt that he will continue to contribute to the game he loves so much and knows so well."

Because Lucchino wants to keep HIS job.
It's the same thing that every team says every time they fire a manager. No one is going to say that the guy they hired is an idiot who couldn't get the players to play up to their potential.

yes, the Sox would be a lot better with a 255 center fielder, a 262 right fielder, a 254 first baseman and a 215 catcher
Point being, every guy he has given away comes back to bite us on the ass.
P.S. And goes on to play in the postseason.

also, i think everyone of those averages are better than the guy who the sox had at that position. I guess besides agone, but he was a fuckin bum for all bum a few weeks and he showed his bumness on the dodgers.

rf Reddick .262 ross .267
1b Moss .254 Gonzales 300 (loney .230)
c Kottaras .215 shoppach 250 Saltalamacchia .222 Lavarnway .157
well you should think again, except for lavarnway and loney, 2 guys who didn't play a lot, you are wrong.
I'm not saying that the ex-sox on the A's didn't have better years, but their averages weren't better.
but it makes for a better story the way you told it

he wasn't bad, wasn't great
he just managed a luke warm team when healthy and shitty when injured
there are surely better managers out there I'm sure
but a utility infielder to replace Vizquel who replaced MacDonald?
yes, not a hard slot to obtain elsewhere, but the question is how much could you get for a manager?
not much obviously

he was far from on the way out, just in that middle ground guiding a team with a shit ton of injuries already filled with minor leaguers to start the season (albeit better raw talent than in the past)
if anything, he's a confident and steady manager...just nothing more
They traded a player for a manager who worked for the guy they smeared and ran out of town.

The Drew signing will allow the Red Sox one more year to develop slick-fielding youngster Jose Iglesias. Drew's deal is pending a physical.

How many closers do they need? And with that starting staff right they have now, there won't be that many save opportunities.
Exactly. It was a pointless move. You had Bard groomed to be the closer (before the idiotic idea to make him a starter), then you pick up Bailey last year who never got a chance because he was hurt most of the year and when he came back there was nothing to save and now you get Hanrahan. Cherington has made some stupid moves this offseason.
