It is obvious to me that the money that Beckett was due in the next 2 years and probably to a lesser extent, Crawford was due over the next 5 years, would not be money well spent. Gonzalez was the only one that the Sox traded that was producing and he wasn't producing anywhere near his pay grade. I think Crawford has a good chance to play well after his surgery but even if he does, the recovery time will be another $20 or so unproductive million. Beckett certainly pitched well in the past but the signs weren't good for the rest of his contract.

Exactly. It was a pointless move. You had Bard groomed to be the closer (before the idiotic idea to make him a starter), then you pick up Bailey last year who never got a chance because he was hurt most of the year and when he came back there was nothing to save and now you get Hanrahan.
