I agree with you completely, but would add that it was a stupid question in the first place. No president is going to have any effect on womens salaries, the people who hire and promote around the country will decide who they hire and promote, no presidential decree will change that, and the president doesn't have the power to order everyone to start promoting women.

To an extent sure, but not completely. If a POTUS wants to address it, as Obama had with several bills early in his tenure, they surely can. It's not something they can fully change overnight sure, but help point in the right direction is clearly attainable...or ignore in the case of others. It does have an impact overall.

I think it's headed in the right direction, it will evolve over time, as the old guys with their old values retire and die newer, younger mangers won't share their biases.
I also think that womens overall salaries are effected in the long run by holes in their employment effecting seniority, holes caused by leaving the workplace for a while to have children and start raising them.

you'll get no argument from me, mostly because I'm scared of you, but I wasn't placing a judgement on that statement, whether it's right or wrong, I was just saying that I believe when you compare national salaries between men and women, this will effect the numbers.
I think the family medical leave act has and will continue to have a positive effect on this because a woman can leave work for a period of time to give birth and bond with her child without losing seniority.

The show Boy Meets World ran from the kids being in like 6th grade through them graduating college. When the show started it was supposed to be an ensemble thing and there was a nerdy kid named Minkus who was a main supporting character. They basically swapped out his character for a love interest and eventually just dropped him from the show completely.

an honest approach to this for me is to give men equal time away to welcome a kid into the family, barring any extra needed do to complications with the birth for women
most places of work make a huge difference in this area, some giving nothing to men when they have kids and that's complete shit. this lines up with the low/sometimes lack of vacation time in jobs and lunch breaks overall hours at work. quite simply, we work harder, longer and are more scrutinized for less, and women get it even worse.

as great as the FMLA is for ensuring you have a job when you return, its not quite the rosy picture you make it out to be. FMLA does not require that your boss pay you, only that you not be fired/replaced during that leave. Also, all CL/Sick time must be used before it can go into effect. idk how much bonding mom is gonna have with baby if she's worried about how she's gonna make rent or buy groceries while she heals from childbirth. Not all work places grant maternity leave, though a woman's chances of finding a job that has it increases with her level of education.

if we just ignore it, maybe it will go away.
meanwhile, generations of women lose income solely by virtue of their societally dictated gender roles as the "old guard" dies out
I'm agreeing with you both, I don't think it's a good thing, but other than what government has already done, like requiring equal pay for equal work, there's not much more that can be done. The "old guard" will promote who they promote, often unfairly, but they will eventually go away.

ive had a coworker get passed over for promotion because there were rumors she was pregnant (which she wasnt). there was nothing wrong with her work performance; they just didnt want to take the chance that she would take maternity leave if there was an important case.
