"If Los Angeles, flush with cash, with motivated owners and, perhaps, having learned the lesson in 2013 that spending money on superstars works, could bid up Cano substantially. The Dodgers, far over the luxury-tax threshold, will be paying a premium on every dollar they offer Cano, but there’s little indication that’s a concern for their front office. The Yankees, in an ironic twist, may find themselves unable to match the spending of a team willing to blast through the tax threshold to put the best players on the field."
Ha! So hope they steal him and now the yanks will finally be on the other side of this coin! At least they will drive up the price for the spanks as you just know they were hoping for arod relief. It won't be long after that selig starts to warm up to the idea of a cap! U watch.

Cano is not worth more than twice the amt Pedroia is getting.
Sheehans attempt to justify Canos numbers and link it to 30 million a year is pathetic at best.

Justify or just guessing at how the market and this contract will work out? I didn't see anyone say he's worth more than double pedroia, but i guess signing mid-season and a free agent bidding war are one in the same now.

sorry, it's not amazing to keep a team in the wild card race with a 200+ million dollar payroll that has injuries to make it a normal team, which then goes out and signs or acquires other expensive/vet players to keep it in contention longer...I know Ichiro was last year, but he fits the Well, Overbay, Wilson (D specialist), Youk (then injured too), Soriano, Reynolds and more

Agreed. I read a cool suggestion some dude made about this: if the Yanks are winning (and they should since the Stros suck), let Mo play CF for the bottom of the 8th and then close in the 9th.
And a nice touch last night when Pettitte and Jeter "pulled" Mo in the 9th. It was a cool historic moment.

Although I agree with your Madden assessment.
He also showed a ton of class by allowing Andy and Jeter to go out and pull Mo.
Its not Girardi's fault that cashman gave out huge contracts to guys and they got hurt or got old.
Joe's job is to manage what he has. And this year, he had SHIT! He is not a GM.
But if Madden gets it, he deserves it.

Go me he's usually in a bad spot by simply being the yank manager where you usually have the highest payroll, best players and unlimited money and moves. Yet girardi proved himself in Florida before even getting to ny...yet he is a bitch constantly crying about people stealing signs when he loses. Yankee brass are meeting Monday to discuss moves for 2014. They want to get under that 189 million dollar threshold.
Among the Cano issue, they are looking at a Japanese pitcher who went 24-0 this year, however the posting fee is in excess of 50 million. Theres also talk going around by signing Beltran.
Pettitte and Rivera are gone and Jeter will be making 9 million next year and more money can come off depending on how long A Rods suspension is if it is upheld. If not and he plays a full year he's also getting a bonus for passing Mays on the all time HR list. Not sure if that counts to the luxury tax though.

Can't argue against the hank stand that both 300 million and 10 years are lines in 2013 not to be crossed. Yet the yanks have their history and wallet as a slap to Cano's face after years of great service. Odd too how they seem to feel the need to put the guy's popularity compared to legends (jeter/mo) and traveling circuses (arod) out there to drive the price down. It's about skills, and he's by far a great second baseman. Hope he goes elsewhere at a discount and says he would have done the same for nyy but for the bullshit they always pull when negotiations come up. Jeter has enough range at 50 to cover both spots, so no need to worry.

Cano at least has to acknowledge that the Yanks need to rebuild and a contract of that size would hurt them in the long run. The question is does he want to get paid and play with a bunch of baseball geriatrics, or will he suck it up so the Yanks can rebuild around him?
Yankee fans should hope he makes a move like Cutch did in Pittsburgh.
spoon
11-19-2013, 12:26 PM
Well to me that rebuild stance and that the yanks have any money issues with or without him signing is disingenuous. They will surely sign someone soon enough to a huge contract, they just want a discount here. Cano knkws that and is saying it isn't starting with me. For fuck's sake, JETER just got a fucking raise after last year for what?! But Cano needs to take the hit? Uh huh.

That Jeter 1 year deal was stupid on the part of Cashman. I'm not defending it at all but its Jeter and the front office thinks he deserved that raise. Plus he's the last from the glory days of the 90s. It's more sentimental ass kissing
I'm sure the Yankees are feeling the Sting of the A Rod contract and looking at how Pujols isn't the player he was and knowing he's got 8 years left on that deal.
Yanks would be more than fair if they offered Cano 7 years averaging 20-25 mill per

Im not pissed about shit.
Jay Z proved he is an idiot by thinking that going to the METS would scare the Yankees?
Those same Mets that just said they will not sign anyone to a 100mil contract?
Thats comical.
Boris knew the ins and outs and knows how to play the game.
Jay Z will get absolutely roasted when it comes down to talking money.
There is a line between wanting good money as your final big one, and just asking for a stupid amount.
The Boris Jay Z Switch will cost Cano at least 75mil.
Kevin
11-19-2013, 11:12 PM
They first have to get through that huge hurdle that the Redsox and Padrioa put in front of them. Is he worth 110 mil more than he is?
The answer is no.
If the Dodgers don't get in it, where is your market? Certainly not the Mets.
Im not signing a 31yr old 2b who loafs around and the bulk of his numbers ccome from a joke of a park.

sure thing kev…the mere fact that they were too high for even the spanks to logically go after Pujols, Hamilton and let's all forget how the Dodgers traded for a LOT of their guys too. But remind me, who was STILL the top paid team in the league last year despite all the bullshit you just wrote? What team has 4 of the top 6 individual salaries in the MLB? Only double the Jays salary AFTER a pretty fucking active year or two from the jays. See how much the yanks have been out there? Do you see how 5-10 year contracts that are huge for huge guys aren't only impactful to the year they are signed? Of course not, you're an idiot.
And let's move on from your stupid point insinuating the yanks don't make free agent signings too, bc they paid more for 2nd and 3rd level replacement players than some teams pay for first line starters. The only reason nobody takes as much note is bc most were fitting of the recent yank mold, old and not as flashy, but vets with enough know how to fill in admirably. I guess it's just odd for you that someone else has made moves and a team dared get within 15 million of their payroll, down from ~ 25 million gap the prior year. But yah, poor yanks, they never sign anyone and haven't led the league in for, well forever in salary. Good news for everyone else, the yanks only win when the gap is almost 60 million between them and the second place team.
And again, Go Dodgers right!?

I'm torn, as the league DOES have the right to judge things differently when it's a special case, which this is…it's in the CBA, but a full season on what amounts to not even the first failed test under it? I have to say he'll win too, but now they get to claim only one year after ties what, 3-4 times to steroids? I think it'll end up MORE than 50 no matter what, unless Arod makes this his life's work and spends way more money than he would have lost this year.
in conclusion, Arod AND MLB/Selig are assholes

ok but also, everyone who ever was suspended or caught and not suspended cause of rules or whatever, for doing PEDs, none of them did it only once. Aside from andy pettite of course.
Just because a guy did something and got away with it before shouldnt matter, cause everyone who got caught got away with it before. We just might not have found out.

2014 Will be Jeter's final season
Yanks sign Jeter to 1 year 12 million dollar deal.
Is Cashman fucking insane?
It's got to be his golden parachute. I think he'll do what Mo did and announce during spring training that this is his last season so he can get the same farewell. He's 39 (going to be 40) with a bum ankle and he expects to play nearly full-time at SS?
I called it.

Ha! Payback for stealing my schtick!
Yet come on an, jeter needs his arrogant retirement tour all yankee assholes surely deserve. Every team should give him a plaster cast of the nicest tail he hit when on he road in their cities as their bon voyage gift.

I think every team should give him a gift basket just like he gives to said tail that he has hit.

Well so much for him sticking around long enough to get 4000 and possibly roses record
U know for some reason I thought he was in 3700s
Hes only at 3316
He would have needed 4 200 hit seasons to get there and if not injured last year would still need at least 3 more years and then hes 42-43

No doubt Jeter will get 1st ballot and there is already talk about how he ranks as a Yankee.
I looked at all the numbers and while he's in the top 10 he's not on the DiMaggio, Ruth, Gehrig or Mantle tier.
Sure he has over 3000 hits and has made some good plays defensively, However he never won a batting title or MVP. Now the game is different than of decades past but Jeter did not dominate in any offensive category. His postseason stats are good but so are the other 4 that I mentioned.

Probably bc he wasn't juiced. His d was much worse than most remember of him (awful range), but his inside out swing and clutch hits have been sick.

Remember when baseball players didnt announce their retirement a full year in advance so they could go on farewell tours and have gift upon gift presented to them?

Thank you. Jeter had a great offensive season at 38 after 2 subpar (for him) ones.
If this doesn't scream PED, I don't know what does:
Age: 36 | OPS: .710
Age: 37 | OPS: .743
Age: 38 | OPS: .790

This is one of those things that makes me look down on someone when they bring it up. Great player? Yes. First ballot hall of famer? Eh.. as far as shortstops go, his numbers probably justify this. One of the greatest players of all time? Not even close.

I think if Jeter didn't play in NY he would be in the same situation as Biggio. 3000 hits, consistent for 20 years but no individual awards. I think eventually Biggio would get in but it's going to be a couple of more years.
Jeter has the postseason numbers in his favor.

One final year closer to his norm...tied to that stadium and great batters around him who make a 38 year old Jeter the easier to pitch to...yah, i won't condemn a guy based on such a frivolous argument with not a whiff a smoke to indicate fire. Until there is SOMETHING at all, he's clean.

It's circumstantial and clearly wouldn't hold up in court. However, it looks suspicious to me. At age 35, he has a two clear years of decline, then at 38 he rebounds? If this was anyone else I think we'd be rolling our eyes. And the Yankees always have a fantastic line-up.

Barry Zito hasn't been signed with a team yet. Yanks should look at him as an emergency 5th starter in case Phelps or Pineda hit the DL. He would be signed on the cheap and would be low risk.

At the time it was the largest signing for a pitcher
If I'm correct for 2010 Zito wasn't on the postseason roster at all
