Yanks and Cano are talking long term extension. They usually don't do that during the season.
Bad move. He's going to want low to mid 20's per year. Plus he will be 32 at end of season. 30 and 100 are nice numbers during the regular season but he blows in October with a .222 BA

They have to sign him. Tex is declining. Arod's done. It's the current system in baseball. Signing these guys to get their peak years and dealing with the tail end down the road. The Yankees can afford it.

I was talking to a friend of mine before. Hughes will be shut down. Stupid Dan Murphy on the Mets is getting cortizone shots already...are baseball players the biggest pussies as far as athletes go? These guys have been in camp like 4 days. Theyre in their 20s. I remember my 20s. It wasnt that long ago. I was indestructible.
Or is it a generational thing? Keith Hernandez did mounds of coke, never wore batting gloves. SMOKED. And he won an mvp and had roughly a 300 lifetime average. I think he tore a hammy once. Thats it. Meanwhile Jose Reyes had to relearn how to fuckin run at 20 years old.

Don't they want to get down to 189 million to avoid the luxury tax?
They have CC Tex and A Rod (Who may or not be back) all making over 20 million.
I think Jeter has a player option for 2014 if he exercises that , he will be making 17

At least you've toned it down a ton from your last prediction for them, but I'd take your big mouth much more seriously if you backed it with a bet. Still, do I really want to wait until the Roberto Luongo contract to expire to get paid on it!? Probably not worth the time to make the bet in the end.

the yanks have titles and it worked for a LONG time relatively speaking
not sure how you expected them to stop a successful tactic before it ran its course
yet losing arguably your best positional player up the middle in his prime seems to be a bad call no matter how you slice it

you can HOPE the Jays finish no better than third, but do you believe this rationally
it surely could happen, more so than your 4th/last claim of the past, but outside of injuries (not something the Jays are very lucky with truly) and plain just shitting to bed, you have to think that is a risky bet right now as you all but just admitted.
do i honestly think they should be WS favs as vegas has them, no way in hell with so many new faces, very little pen race experience, no history together and hell a new coaching staff to boot. yet I have to think they'll be a player in the playoff races at least, much less a possible pennant/WC playoff birth...I'd honestly sign up for either right now

Ok lets break this down...
Cano is 31 right..
You sign him 7-10 years..
This team is clogged with high salary players on their downside for 5 of those years...
You can move ONE of those guys to DH and replace them..
Not even the Yankees can take a 50-75mil a year hit PLUS sign other guys.
I get he is a talented player but at this point his play won't matter until he is also on his downside.

The Yankees need to realize that spending a ton of money has not ever and will never work...
Yankees have 1 title in the lets say 13 years since they started spending.
They need to do what the Yankees did before the 96-00 run.
Suck for a while and rebuild.
Yankees did not win spending, Dodgers, Angels other won't.
Trade Cano for a bunch of prospects.
Get someone who can actually fucking draft and for the love of creation get a medical staff that can handle young pitchers.
Don't give me this NY won't stand for losing seasons nonsense. Giants have, Knicks lost for ages, and are about to enter its 40th title-less year Rangers went 54 fucking years.
Yankees even went a decade and a half without one.

first off, spending DID in fact help a ton with the regular season dominance and all those pennants
after that, it's more a crapshoot and big money players aren't necessarily big game performers...so it's a catch 22 and I'll take getting there year in and year out for the simple shot at it. also, other teams have done it like the Marlins twice and let's be honest Boston too. money sure as shit heightens your odds a ton, just less in certain divisions and the AL is my guess simply bc some top spending teams have always been there...sure the mets and phils spend in the NL, but this is changing with LA of late
finally, I won't give you that bc I never said it or believed it. in all honesty, it might knock off some bullshit fans and set better expectations for the team over time

and you know they'll be PLENTY motivated to beat the Sox being they all but took Farrell from them
rumor has it that the players are actually happy with this, as he wasn't all that popular in the clubhouse or well respected as a coach
for a former pitching coach, he was FUCKING AWFUL managing our arms, bullpen and just overall with that side of the game
the Jays probably have much more hate right now for the Sox than the Yanks...yet the Rays are very dangerous and can't be forgotten, just as the O's have a VERY solid lineup coming of age now too. Might be a bird war at the top, with the Rays falling off a bit...yanks sox fall continues? I guess the sox have to rebound some right?

I see the Rays and Jays occupying the top two spots, I think it's pretty close between the two. I have a hard time seeing the Orioles repeating their success from last year though. Their record in one run and extra innings games was mind-boggling and completely unrepeatable. Certainly a large part of the success was based on a great bullpen year for them, but bullpen success is notoriously volatile. Winning 93 while being only seven in the black in run differential is phenomenal, but unless the rest of the team takes a huge step forward and the pen stays in the same general neighborhood as last season I think the O's could experience a pretty precipitous drop.

The biggest downfall to the Yankees is that shrine of greed and pompousness that is the new stadium..
#1 The seats will never be fully sold out because they were delusional enough to think people will pay anywhere near the price they want for a reg season baseball game. They will not make nearly the same revenue they made in the old place.
#2 It was so poorly designed with RF, combined with the length and wind makes it a joke.
Hitters will never use the entire field or take pitches because they will swing for right field. Getting what you have now. Low avg, low on base #s high Hrs from any hitter you get, which translates to very little success come playoff time because you have to manufacture runs in the playoffs with pitching being in another level.
You can't really develop any pitchers because their confidence in their pitching and pitches will be shot because even though they made a real good pitch, it goes out in that joke of a park.
Aces or even #2s are becoming harder and harder to get because teams are locking them up. So unless you develop them yourself, the chances of you getting one is slim or if you do, your farm is bare because of what you had to give up.
Felix is already gone, If the Rays can't sign Price, he will be unloaded for Prospects, which the Yankees don't have many of. Verlander is not sniffing FA...
Yankees are just a mess right now in every way.
Are the Sox a mess? No.
Mediocre and playing in a suddenly balanced division? Yes.

not sure on overall rev for the yanks now versus the old stadium, yet I'm quite sure they locked in some new major cash with corp sponsorship on the new stadium, the new boxes that were hardly available in the old digs and so much more. my guess is they are still making mad cash there, probably more even in a down economy where things like sports and entertainment are usually the first to take a hit.
next, aces and top flight pitchers were NEVER easy to come by...NY just had the money to line a few up and plenty come on the market every trade deadline but as you said you need prospects, much less be willing to move them. Two things the yankees simply haven't had or even done with what they do have for whatever reason. The killer b's and a few others like Montero were hot commodities many times over the last few, but the yanks pretty much said no until the M's deal. I still think that guy will be at least a #2 in the end with electric stuff once back. You fleeced the M's in my mind bc Montero can't really play C or 1B and isn't nearly the hitter they thought he was especially there in a huge park, no right field short porch and that lineup to help protect him to see decent pitches.

"The first step in the fall was the money." That is absolutely true. For me, ARod lost all credibility when he signed that contract with Texas. I will never forget that interview he did with 60 Minutes after he signed that deal when he said he came to Texas to win, not to get paid. I remember thinking how completely full of shit he was. Yankee fan born and raised here.
I believe the Yankees will do okay, but I don't see them making it anywhere within the next 2-3 seasons. They are too old, not enough talent coming up in the farm system and they're trying to get below the luxury tax threshold.
The Orioles should maintain being a solid team as long as Showalter stays in management.
The Blue Jays, in my opinion, should either take the division or take a wildcard spot.
The Rays are still solid, even with the players lost to free agency.
The AL East is always entertaining and this season should be the most competitive in the last 15-20 years. Looking forward to it.

Cashman should be putting Cano up to a trade but knowing how the front office operates they will probably cave in and he will be the next $ 200,000,000 player

most teams don't have a few million here and there just to pick up the Wells/Youks of the world ON TOP of HUGE contracts to fill holes as they come up
sorry, all he does is spend money based on what's available
sure those guys were solid early, they're old and hit walls mid-season as they have...yet if the starters DID come back, it would have/could be a huge pick up for even old starters. yet now, I fear Tex pulled a Bautista re-injuring the wrist and will be out for the year now too.

Buehrle has turned his season around after a slow start to the year. He has six quality starts over his past seven outings while posting a 2.54 ERA. That has lowered his ERA to 4.66, which is a far cry from the 7.02 mark it was in early May.
sup kev?
and yah, my main point was he'll end up in that 12 win +/- 2 range and put up a whole lot of innings as he's a bulldog workhorse...well guess what, you're wrong again
sure he'll lose and you'll point the one offs as a victory, but yah, nice work
Jays climbing, yanks free falling...still just mid-June, but at least it isn't fucking the beginning of May after two starts and a whole lot of mouth.
fucking rotation is still decimated over here...WANG pitching for the SECOND time for the Jays and it's pathetic to be digging this deep. there is surely something off with the Jay's luck in terms of starting pitching. Every year they lose half their starting staff and those not gone for the year are in and out and battling injuries. On top of this, the infield has NOT had one game together yet (Lawrie, Reyes, Lind). Izturis, Bonifacio and DeRosa...not good.

If the Yankees lose him to free agency then what? Will they get draft picks?
He's not a Miguel Cabrera type player who can be consistent all year. I know all these contract rumors are from blogs but the Yanks would be making the same mistake by giving him something in the 200 million range over 8 or 10 years

To Riveras credit he has dominated for over 15 years. Jeter has had some clutch moments and milestones like 3000 hits but he's not the greatest of all time at his position.
Jeter is a 1st ballot HoF inductee but he's not on a different level

is he though ? first ballot I'm talking about
yeh he has rings and over 3500 hits so he'll def get in
some of it also has to do with what year he's eligible and who else is too

I wasn't even thinking of peds as a reason
he's most likely going to get in on first
but he's done nothing statistically that's great other then compile all the hits
he wasn't ever the best shortstop in his era
so he's going to get in for the rings and the jeter aura of being a Yankee ?

Agreed that he never won an MVP and wasn't a multi year batting title winner like Boggs or Gwynn. I think he will go in for the consistency and his post season numbers as well.
Also I believe that the some of the writers will use as a part of their reasoning that he wasn't involved in PEDs

as much as I hate PEDs, NOT being on them isn't enough to get even top level guys in
Jeter will get in bc he was perceived the best SS in the game by fans and some stupid writers for years. and to be honest, what he did last year alone was an impressive return to form, yet how much of that was the year prior being just that much off we'll never really know. He is FAR from ever being the best in the field, but as an all around hitter, it's tough to argue the guy did whatever was needed in almost any way. HR in a big spot, bam, bunt, sure...pitcher coming hard and impossible to turn on, single down the line the other way.
To me his most amazing attribute was his ability to go the other way against pitchers REALLY brining the heat and very sick pitches. He literally is like a great defensive martial artist in that he could use your strength against you and use what YOU give him. He's perhaps one of the best all-time, and yes I mean this, at going the other way with that awesome inside out swing in true golfer fashion. I fucking HATE Jeter mind you, but to ignore this and his longevity at a very high level for so long is just nuts. Tie in the yankee factor, that usually comes with great fanfare, notoriety, exposure and titles and you have yourself a fucking veritable perfect storm for fans and voters alike. Add to this he is the captain of a multiple WS winning team...yeah not all as the captain, but it didn't have to be since he's a part of many titles...all of this era, and how clutch he was in big moments even on the field (Giambi was fucking safe, but history will always say otherwise) and he's a first ballot asshole yankee in the HOF.
To this day I still believe he was always a TERRIBLE first step SS in the field, much like Reyes to be honest, but they can go get it after bc they are both very athletic. So in the end, he was never even a top level SS in the field to me, even though he wasn't necessarily bad, so his hitting made up for this in a huge way. He wasn't Posada bad in the field and added similar extra in the batter's box. On another team he's a grinder and gets in a few votes down the line, but here he's first ballot simply bc of his amount of playoff exposure, success and so much more he would not have had in other locations. Just another bs reason for players to want to play in huge markets with better exposure in this pos sport of late.

I dont disagree the it SHOULDNT get you in. Im saying it will. Guys in this era that are 100% clean with some holes in their game will be looked on favorably in comparison to the all time hr leader. Baseball writers talk to current HOFers and know their feelings towards these guys. Bill Madden was on Francesa saying none of these guys would ever get a single vote from him or any voters he knows. They feel like theyre "protecting the game".
That being said, Giambi was safe, he ran 5 more steps and launched himself into the stands after catching that ball and its easy to go the other way when youre diving across the plate on every pitch.
