I get the whole point of not liking judged events. It sucks that there really is no other way to do it for some of these events. But my point is, in terms of excitement, watching dudes skate around alone in a big circle just doesnt seem to have the same shit as a guy bombing 150 feet spinning around with a chance to have an epic accident.

Though the crazy short speed skating thing where there is like 6 dudes on there at once is pretty sick. Basically you just need some danger. There is no danger in speed skating, especially in the races that they are skating like 100000000 miles

I've always thought of the ice skating as a "rich kid's" kind of sport. Their parents can afford the trainers and ice time it takes to improve their skills. All of the x games crap is the same sort of thing. Who has time to dedicate to that kind of crap if you actually have to hold down a job.

They might keep records on indoor skating races, but even then, up until recently, some Olympic host cities held speed skating events outdoors.

Same for all of the ski events. Different hills, snow conditions, and cross country courses, etc.

Marathon running races face a similar problem. Most just keep their own course record, as while they are all the same distance, some have more turns, uphill sections, etc.

If someone can find me the "World Record" in one of the outdoor winter Olympic timed events, please post a link.

I just think there are too many variables between slopes to accurately compare times from different sites, even if they were the same distances, which I kinda doubt.

Same for bobsled, luge, skeleton tracks. Every track is unique. In fact, Sochi made a point of adding some uphill stretches on the luge track to slow them down and keep them from killing themselves.

Like I said, I wouldn't doubt it if there was now an indoor speed skating "world record", but they haven't been indoors very long.

The czech coach is not very smart either. He didn't take hejda and hrudler for the team and now didn't start his top goalie in one of only a few games. Snoogans made a good point. The US doesn't put these teams together like a "dream team" of the best players. They form their own teams, and then the best team goes on to represent the US.

It would be kinda like the US sending the Miami Heat (or whomever the reigning champ was at the time) to play the rest of the world in the Olympics.

Only in this case, it would probably be more comparable, that if in 1980, the US had sent the entire U. of Minnesota hockey team to play the Russians. Our "best" amateur team against a field of international professional teams.

I don't get the feeling that the USOC really gives a shit about curling. But maybe after the TV ratings for this olympics come in, they'll take notice, and start putting a decent team together, and getting them more international experience before 2018.

I think that the way it goes now is that a skip puts together the 4 man (maybe plus an alternate) and they compete with other teams that are out together the same way. I think in this country we are too worried about being fair and letting the players have things their way.

I have no doubt that in Canada and the European countries they do it this same way and because the competition is so good, every teams skill level goes up. I would bet that the Chinese team was out together out of the best they had, and then the team was sent to Canada to compete for a couple of years.

That isnt true. Its not that we dont care. The main issue I would say is access. If you look at our team, or if you go to the USA Curling website and it shows other US teams, they are basically all from Minnesota. We dont have a national enough program.

And dont think they rest of the world teams are stocked with big time pro curlers. There really isnt much big time pro curling. From what they said, 6 of the top 10 ranked curling teams arent even at the olympics cause they are all from Canada.

Shuster's team has been together for a while. His team represented the US in Vancouver too. Although I think the guy calling curling for NBC was on that team, so it's not the same 4 players.

The "alternate" they have with them (the guy who replaced Ike against Canada) is the skip of his own team in the US.

In fact, right after the olympics, there is a US tournament that starts right away. So again, Shuster's team, having been in tact through the olympics for the most part, will have an edge against the alternate's team, because they have been playing / practicing without their skip for weeks now.

After one of the previous winter olympics ended (Salt Lake? maybe?), espn2 tried covering curling, but apparently ratings were crap when they weren't representing their country. No one seemed to care.

I think I'd watch the US qualifiers, and would definitely watch a US "national" team playing against other countries in "friendlies" any time of year.

As far as the "skip", he's basically the captain. He makes most of the shot calls. They are not necessarily the best at throwing the shots. In fact for Germany, and a few other teams, the "skip" wasn't the fourth in the lineup.

My frustration with Shuster is his actual shot making. He actually calls a decent game from what I can tell. He at least was able to put the US is a lot of situations where they could pull out wins in the last end, both in Vancouver and in Sochi, but he couldn't make the shots in the clutch. He might be better served by remaining "skip", but recruiting a better shot maker to take the last two stones.

But the others aren't much better. They blow a lot of easy peels and takeouts, and leave themselves having to scramble from behind.

I say they're "easy", only because I see other teams make these shots routinely, not that I've ever even touched a curling stone. No one else seems to struggle with weight, or complain about differences in stones the way the US teams do.

I gave up on the women after they gave up that fucking 7 in one end to the brits. I think that record will stand forever.

Yes, this is the problem. I think his ego is too big to let him do the right thing and let someone else shoot fourth. I'm watching the replays of the men's curling semi finals. It is amazing how much better the men are than the women. The men consistently make double and triple take outs and raises. There are always more stones in play.

I was watching the other day when one of the commentators (a female curler) said she would go for the easy shot (a draw) to tie up a match in the 10th end. Meanwhile, the men's team that was playing went instead for a difficult double takeout shot that ended up scoring two stones and winning. Afterwards, the commentator admitted that was the difference in the thinking between men's and women's curling.

again, they weren't gassed…they just play like individuals and their overall talent isn't as good as most think. they have a few VERY ELITE players, then a whole lot of iffy players and had to take almost half KHL'ers albeit two of them are NHL level (Kovi and Radulov). yet the russians lived up to their lazy, selfish image to a t. sad really, but russian hockey took a MAJOR hit here on home soil. overall embarrassing tourney with the US game being their best to be honest. And now that Semin WAS added to the roster, they didn't even choose KHL players for the old our league is on par with the NHL, they had nobody else to take from the NHL really. Who'd they leave off from the NHL? Gonchar? perhaps the ONLY guy that may have helped them, especially on the PP but he's no game changer or young elite player any longer.

I actually made it through the whole day without a spoiler! Christ, that's tough nowadays, especially with most people thinking it's their job now to report "news" immediately to all of their friends and co-workers.

Thankfully I had headphones at work and a two day old RnF show to listen to in the afternoon and on the way home, and managed to find a place to take the girls where I knew there were no tv's, and not exactly a sports/hockey crowd.

Regardless of the outcome, the game did not disappoint, and I was glad I could watch it in it's entirety without a hint of how it was going to end.

Tomorrow though, I might have to threaten some people at work with their jobs to keep them quiet. Too bad I can't fire my counterpart in QA, the fucking canuck.

In hindsight, that fucker was in a pretty good mood late this afternoon.

even if straight up, who cares? there is a huge dif between young men and women right?? so it really shouldn't be so shocking. Simply put, not one US player has been more a letdown and one dimensional than Kane. Horrible puck protection and VERY selfish play. Couldn't finish from game one too...perhaps Ryan should have been there and our arse gm got him confused with Kane.

This bronze medal game is tough to watch so far. Teemu is a stud and man I'm happy for him and this hard working Fin team, but the US may have just dug a hole too deep woth Rask back in net. They started way too passive again and feeling sorry for themselves vs the Fins wanting this and the medal clearly.

The US is playing much better now, but too late? Rask in net makes this Fin team better.
