3 phish phans on the same thread... spectacular...... problem w/ that list is that they are listing two guitarists in a band i.e. chuck and al from moe..... so it basically comes down to "which bands showcases guitar the best" not so much "guitar god"..... saw Derrick Trucks open for DMB and it was pretty intense.... And in the end, who is better then Trey??? saw him over the summer and he still rocked w/ the Duo and Gordon... the drugs definetly hurt, but the talent is still there and still evident

While I'm not a big fan of his music (cornball country), Brad Paisley is an amazing guitar player. Derek Trucks is also a witch.

To my taste, the best guys out there are Richard Thompson, Nile Rodgers, Buddy Miller, Marc Ribot, Ry Cooder, Tom Verlaine, David Lindley, Bill Frisell, and Jim Campilongo. I've also like what I've heard from some of nouveau blues guys like Corey Harris and Alvin Youngblood-Hart. Jef Lee Johnson has really impressed me.

I was forced to goto a John Meyer concert a few years ago by my girlfriend. I have to admit it was good and now I will even admit to being a fan of his. I like that bluesy mellow sound. I have all of his c.d's now and his live albums are great. Very talented, but a guitar god? mmm I dont know.

Anyone in the NYC area should check out Mike Stern at the 55 Bar if they want to see a guitar God. He plays modern rockish-jazz fusion and he is amazing, one of my favorite live acts. His CDs suck the big one though, I mean they are okay but nothing at all compared to seeing him live. And if you don't like the music, its only $5 to get in and that price covers 2 drinks. Anyway, he played with Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius and other legends and he really changed the way guitar was used in jazz.

Amazing album, amazing.

So I went and watched and couldnt believe what I was seeing, this insane-o loooking guy who besides his own stuff, would cover, over the years:

Eminence Front by The Who
Buffalo Stance by Nenah Cherry
An AC/DC song which escapes me
as well as Pinball Wizard Gimme Shelter All Along the Watchtower...

on friggin acoustic.
To be honest, I had no idea who Hedges was at the time I played pool with him. One of my best friends had talked about how much he worshipped his playing. I knew he was playing in a music hall a few blocks away, earlier that night, because of my friend. We were playing pool (like we did almost every night), and Hedges was playing on the same table as us. My buddy was acting all nervous and giddy the whole time. He finally pulled me aside and said, "I can't believe we're playing pool with Michael Hedges!" He was a really nice, and very quiet guy.

I later listened to some tapes that my buddy had, and I loved it. I'm pretty sure it was about a year later, that I hear he had died. This all happened sometime between 1993 and 1997. My memory of those days can get pretty foggy.

There are a million more guitar players out there playing a catchy White Stripes riff, or a Blood Sugar Sex Magik guitar solo. Popular doesn't mean better, but when you're talking about "Gods," it's an aspect because of the worship factor. Pete Towsend was a guitar god in his day. And a legit one. But, he had a cute little windmill move and a pretty awesome band.

And John Mayer to me is the rare case of being very underrated to one group of people, but just as overrated to another. Mainstream music fans here his cute little pop songs and would never even think that he is a great guitarist. He is. He's not.

And, I stand by Frusciante doing more interesting guitar work than most guitarists today. Even if he isn't the most talented. Frusciante is a guitar god.

To rate new guitar gods you have to go back to older guitar gods, which makes me bring up Danny Gatton from D.C. I caught his act live at the Birchmere in '94 (the year of his death). Some believe he was the best ever. His album "The Humbler" recorded with rockabilly artist Robert Gorden live in Berkeley in 1978 showcases his amazing abilities. He set the bar pretty high. Like Shawn Lane.
Now to the living. Steve Morse, Buddy Guy, Stanley Jordan, Warren Trout, Albert Lee, Warren Haynes, various jazzers, etc, etc. ; these guys have been around for years if not decades. They are not new. I've seen both Derek Trucks and Luther Dickenson live several times, but I don't think they are "guitar gods".
I think the ones to watch out for, the "new guitar gods", are the ones we don't know about yet.

Have to give credit to Zakk Wylde and Dimebag for keeping the guitar solo alive in the '90's when it seemed like everyone else was grabbing seven string guitars, tuning them down to A, scooping the mids out of the EQ and playing one finger power chords over hip-hop beats.

As far as the other guys go, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Robert Randolph and Henry Garza(anyone that doubts Garza as a guitar hero, check out Los Lonely Boys live album. With Ron bringing up Rory Gallagher today, I got to thinking, who is the most unappreciated guitarist in your opinion. Anyone who plays blues guitar or loves blues guitar is likely to know who Rory Gallagher is, but bring his name up to the average schlub and they likely will think you are talking about a famous prop comic, or one of the Oasis brothers. It is hard to call him underrated, because anyone who does know his music understands how influential he is, so I call him unappreciated because so few Americans actually know who he is.
I'll say as influential as Television has been, very few people name Tom Verlaine for how he has affected guitar playing.
Also, although he is relatively well known, whenever people bring up the greatest blues guitarists of all time, I very rarely see Albert Collins on that list. For me personally, he is my second favorite blues guitarist after Buddy Guy.
Also, for as popular as ZZ Top has been in American Music, I don't meet a lot of people who recognize what an amazing guitar player Billy Gibbons is.
So what are your thoughts? Who is the most unappreciated guitar player in your opinion.

I was in Austin a few months back. I'm not sure if there was ever an DVD made from his Austin City Limits performance. I will have to look into it. Also, for every Rory Gallagher, there's a Robin Trower, Pat Travers, Frank Marino..i'm sure that list goes on as well.

I gotta go back to Rod Stewart and The Faces again and say Ron Wood.

Also, back in high school all my friends were in heavy metal bands and they all snuck off to see Prince when he was in town. They all dug his guitar work but they didn't want to admit it until it came out that they all went to the show. Being that this was 1986 I imagine they were looking for tips on how to stuff a stage package as well.

Excellent choices all around, especially Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton, and I've always argued that Billy Gibbons is the most underrated "classic rock" era guitarist.

As far as under appreciated, I always look to guys who don't blow you away with their technique or solos but make the song perfect. Mike Campbell of The Heartbreakers has long been a favorite of mine. I can't imagine Tom Petty without him.

All hail Robert Quine (Voidoids, Lou Reed, Lydia Lunch, Tom Waits, Eno, James White, etc). He operated as a hired gun, but he frequently stole the show. His disjointed runs made dancing headlong into walls feel good.

I also wuv Vini Reilly (Durutti Column). His stoned, pseudo-gypsy, midnight music is perfect for recovering from dancing headlong into walls (especially LC).

And for you Billy Gibbons lovers, check out his pre-ZZ Top psychedelic band The Moving Sidewalks (released one album called Flash in 1968). Proof positive that Billy was born with the electric blues as a conjoined twin.

Tommy Bolin

Thomas Richard 'Tommy' Bolin (August 1, 1951, Sioux City, Iowa - December 4, 1976) was an American-born guitarist best known for his work with Zephyr (from 1969 to 1971), The James Gang (from 1973 through 1974), Deep Purple (from 1975 to 1976) and his solo work.

Private Eyes is the second solo album by guitarist Tommy Bolin. This was Bolin's last album, he died of a drug overdose while on the promotional tour, opening for Jeff Beck.http://www.deep-purple.it/contenuti/discografia/bolin/bolin_private_eyes.jpg

I have to agree with the Townshend call. He is definitely appreciated as a creator, overall musician and composer, but sometimes his pure axework is overlooked.

Randy Rhodes. Maybe not unappreciated, but imagine what he could have done had he stuck around a little longer. Sadly, all he did was bring Eddie's technique to a higher plane. With all that potential, could have been one of the greats.

Chris DeGarmo. Technically, a perfectionist. Very creative, and able to make MindCrime a cohesive piece.

Brian Forsythe. And awesome player with licks that should be in anyone's top ten. I remember him saying (paraphrase) "I'm a pretty good guitarist. Imagine if I practiced."

And, as always, Malcolm Young. For years all people said was "Hey, check out Angus' solo on this one." Without the RiffMeister, you have no AC/DC.

[B][FONT="Courier New"][SIZE="2"]Was listening to King Crimson today.

Adrian Belew.

Belew and fellow Crimson Guitarist [and KC founder] Robert Fripp are on so many albums that you wouldnt know; I dont know if thats underappreciation but for example...

-The soaring synth line guitar drone on Bowies 'Heroes'
-The acoustic guitar on Gabriel's 'Solsbury Hill'
-The insane solo on Bowies 'Fashion'
-The afro-guitar on Talking Heads 'I Zimbra'
-The sound Windows Vista makes on boot-up

All Fripp, who has recorded/played with: Tool, Porcupine Tree, Blondie, Bowie, Gabriel, Eno, Talking Heads, David Sylvian, The Orb, Andy Summers, Daryl Hall, The Damned, Joe Satriani, John Paul Jones, Greg Lake, John Wetton, Midge Ure, No-Man, Brian Ferry, Toni Childs, Future Sound of London...

Belew toured with Bowie, Zappa, Laurie Anderson, Talking Heads.... His last solo album features Les Claypool on Bass and Tool's Drummer.

Belew's on Paul Simon's Graceland, NINs Downward Spiral, and The Fragile, Bowies Lodger, THeads Remain in Light, also w/ Cindy Lauper, Bela Fleck, Joe Cocker, Tori Amos, B52s, Crash Test Dummies, Herbie Hancock, RObert Palmer, Jars of Clay, Peter Wolf...

both Fripp and Belew are serious hired guns, put out serious solo work, are on countless albums, and their names are greeted with a resounding 'Who???' in music circles.

Hell yes! Perhaps the a meeting of two of the greatest guitarists is the Rising Sons. Ry Cooder & Taj Mahal. And you may give props to Duane Allman, and Ry Cooder, but Lowell George was better than any one of them.

Good call! I'm a big Tommy Bolin fan from his work with Purple. He's great on Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" album and his first solo album "Teaser" is good too.

Or you can just get his box set "The Ultimate".

Pity that smack took him so young.

Lindsey's been a favorite of mine for years, and I've always said the fact that he plays in a "pop" band is what keeps him from getting the respect he deserves.

How about the original dude from Heart? He's so underreated I don't know his name. I have yet to meet a guitarist who hasn't just suddenly broke into Barracuda, so simple but so perfect. Even Magic Man oozes with guitar goodness. Of course he gets points off for letting his girlfriend in the band--you know she's going to kick you out so they can play These Dreams. What a mistake.

no one mentioned my #1 under appreciated, Alex Lifeson from Rush. he really shines on the new cd....
my 80's hair metal guy, John Sykes, wrote and recorded all the guitar for the whitesnake record, then got kicked out right before it hit. tried Blue Murder after that but never got back to the big time...
I think Jake E. Lee never got a fair shake either...

I remember talking about this in 5th grade. I used to say Jimi Hendrix.

I've since matured and have a few years of playing under my belt and I really think it's a non-issue. It depends on what you want.

Slow uncomplicated blues goes to many of the old blues men.
Don't forget the legions of jazz guitarists that bled the six strings in smoky night clubs.
The modern X-games guitarists are awesome - between Satch and Vai - I'd give it to Stevie... Don't forget Eric Johnson who's more a blues man but still impressive. And Eddie falls in here too but more a straight rocker than a trickster.
No one quite gets it right like Stevie Ray Vaughn for me in the end though. Even though he was a straight blues man, I can listen to his live shit for hours on end. Some of it was intricate but some so simple. He was definitely not hype and his passing was a tragedy.

I take it all back. Stevie Ray Vaughn.

You know what though, I just saw Warren Haynes recently and it occured to me - here's a guy you rarely hear of, and he's out of this world. So I'd say that seeing these guys live, you get more a sense of who's good at what. I've heard some live Van Halen stuff that is dynamite.

Keef really isn't all that good. I may have been a bit harsh originally.

Keith is a hell of a songwriter, rhythm guitarist, and overall roll-model, but he doesn't even play lead in the Stones. I'll take Ron Wood over him if it's pure guitar playing...

Why is this list only rock musicians? The guitar goes back a lot further than that! No room for Segovia, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Sister O. M. Terrell, Derek, Bailey, Eugene Chadbourne???

Really, there is no way to quantify the quality of an artist. Each individual expresses himself in his own manner, and his art becomes the manifestation of his soul.

Except for Keith Richards, he sucks ass.

Oh no Gunner - as penance for not including Vaughn in the list (and including Townsend, Clapton, Hammet and Paige... I didnt' realize Stevie was even missing) you must find live versions of the Texas Flood album songs and listen. :smoke:

I would probably say Bobo knows 10X what you know and is not merely spouting off NPR stuff, and its a free country and he can post his opinion
