I figured this needed its own thread.

So 7 teams have already made it into the playoffs and only one spot remains. Personally I think the Astros will make it, but then again I also thought the Tigers had a great chance to win the AL Central. No matter who makes it in as the NL Wild Card though, I think this years playoffs feature some really great teams. No Florida Marlins or Texas Rangers were able to sneak in this year. Yankees, Boston, Anaheim, and Minnesota. Braves, Cards, Dodgers, SF/Houston.

I think anyone of the 8 teams can win, and they have the talent to do so. However Im picking the St. Louis Cardinals to beat the Anaheim Angels in the World Series this year. St. Louis has a terrific rotation, even though Chris Carpenter is out for at least the first round. I think the Dodgers and Red Sox both have really great chances of winning it all this year as well.

What are your picks and takes on this years playoffs?

if houston wins the w.c. la will be playing st louis.. if san fran wins the w.c. they will be playing atlanta... the team that scares me the most in both leagues is st louis.. if la plays the cards and wins i dont see anyone that can stop them... out of the al im not to sure.. id like to say boston but everyone knows their previous history... cant really say the yankees have a good shot this year because of their starting pitching.. maybe, just maybe this year it will be the twins taking the al.. stranger things have happend

Johan Santana, the likely AL cy young winner, will nearly guarantee 2 wins for Twins. I'll be rooting for him, but hopefully the Sox play the Twins first.

Season stats: 265 K's, 2.61 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, & .192 BAA

2nd Half stats: 129 K's, 1.21 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, & .154 BAA

Most impressive stat: He's 13-0 in the 2nd half.

The Twins are a darkhorse imo to get into the WS just on Santana's pitching, but their somewhat lousy offense needs to get hot.

Everyone has been counting on a Yankees vs. Red Sox ALCS, but let's face it, there is a strong possibility it will wind up Minnesota vs. Anaheim. And you can imagine how FOX network would feel about that.

Also, as a Yankee fan, I have a dilemma - who do I root for, Angels or Red Sox? A Yankee fan can NEVER root for the Red Sox, but damn, you know I want Yanks/Sox from an entertainment standpoint. Also, after 2002, I must admit...the Angels make me crap my pants.

Also, after 2002, I must admit...the Angels make me crap my pants.

With Lieber as the second starter, the Tigers would make me crap my pants. The Yanks have TWO starters. Who's starting Game 3? I'd, frankly, pick Tanyon fucking Sturtze over the 50 year old, the psychopath or the headcase.

I really do think that if Radke can manage to win the second game, the Twins win. I'm writing off the first game. Forget this week, Santana won Game 1 in Yankee Stadium last year, and he's a much better pitcher now.

I like the Angels chances. Colon and Escobar have pretty good numbers against the Sox and neither of them will face Schilling. If Washburn can somehow manage to win Game 1, that could be a quick series.

So it will be in round 1:
NL
St. Louis vs LA
Atlanta vs Houston

AL
NY vs Minnesota
Aneheim vs Boston

St. Louis will beat LA. (and SOUNDLY)
Tight chase with Atlanta and Houston. IF either wins I think it will be down to the wire but I will say Houston. They have a better rotation.

NY will beat the Twins in 4 games.
And Boston will win against the Angels. the Sox have MUCH more drive to get into the ALCS. They have that "so close they can taste it" feeling in their mouths.

as for the NLCS
St. Louis over Houston.

and...no surprise here....The Yankees over Boston.

I think the Cards have a VERY scary and good team so the Yanks will have a VERY tough time winning the series. If they do.
Will have to see how the playoffs are before I make a call on this one.

Oh yes...and it will be one HELL of a battle for the ALCS.

Cards win. Pujols got banged around in the latter part of the game. Jeff Suppan did an awesome job in his 7 innings. And like the announcers said, really classy by the two teams to do what they did after the game. So unlike what the Yankees or Sox did/would do...

Can we say that Fox executives are now jacking it to seeing Red Sox vs Yankees 2.

Yet another chance to see the same footage replayed over and over and over again: the fight at Fenway from earlier this year, Pedro and Zimmer, Pedro blowing Game 7, Boone's homer, Bucky's homer, the 3,000 "1918"/"Curse"/Babe Ruth signs and pictures...

Yeah, I can't fucking wait. It never gets old.

I consider it a moral loss for the Yankees.

In a game that is 8-0 with your starter pitching a perfect game, it should never get close... EVER. The fact that the Yankees blew sucha tremendous lead shifts all the momentum in the favor of the Sox. Tomorrow's game is HUGE. I don't wanna go into Boston with a split.

not arguing with you, i just feel it was a moral win

they are playing a very tough team and sure they got the big lead and 'almost' gave it up but they regained their composure, scored additional insurance runs, and finished it off...

The Sox have a strong chance. Schilling shouldn't have started, he was obviously in too much pain. The Red Sox will do much better in Fenway, and I have a good feeling they'll win this series.

At least Schilling got out of the game early. Assuming that this injury is more minor (if its not the Red Sox will probably lose in 6) Schilling can now go in Game 4 and at least come out of the pen in game 7.

I would've gone Schilling, Arroyo, Martinez, Wakefield, Schilling, Martinez with Arroyo coming on in relief, Wakefield with Schilling in relief in a best case scenario. If Schilling were to be able to start 3 games, move him into Game 4, Wakefield should then be moved to Game 5 with some help from Arroyo, Martinez still should go Game 6, and Schilling and everybody alive should pitch in Game 7.
I think starting Pedro at Yankee Stadium is a bad move no matter how serious his comments were. Call it babying him or making him look weaker, but he doesn't have to prove anything.
Wakefield could go Game 7 because I think he's a guy that will shut down maybe 80% of who he faces and then will allow 4 runs no matter what. That's why I would've had Wakefield doing 3 inning last year, but that's dead now. I just hope that maybe things can be righted.

And I'm so ready for Derek Lowe to become this year's Wakefield. I just don't understand the idea of putting a starter out there for the first time in the 10th or 11th inning. Lowe should serve as a middle reliever who just goes the 6th and 7th innings or something, treat him like Wakefield. DONT FORCE HIM FRANCONA

I couldn't agree more. With the Yanks' AWFUL pitching, they can't afford to let Pedro off the hook & allow Boston to split. Although I'm happy they got out of that game with a win, I'm no more confident than I was before the game started.

The Sox are still the best offensive team in the playoffs, even with teams like the Yanks & Cardinals who had monster years. I'm praying the Yankees do not look past Martinez tonight. They need to go into Boston with a strangle hold on this series if they're going to win.

You guys are right and I completely agree, the Yankees MUST win tonight. However, with that said I loved nothing more than listening to Schilling run his mouth and not even have the stuff to back himself up. And don't give me that crappy ankle excuse because his ankle has been bothering him all year long, it was only further agrivated during the Angles series. And most of all he made those comments AFTER his ankle acted up again. Fuck Curt Schilling. If you're gonna talk the talk, you better back it up motherfucker.

As a P.S. I read this today and I think it's so true: In sports there are winners and losers. Great players do great things. However, there is one fundamental truth... no matter how big of a winner you are, if you put on a Boston Red Sox jersey... you instantly become a loser.

NESN will air Game 1 of the National League Championship Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros, tonight at 8 p.m. If the ALCS Red Sox-Yankees game (which airs on FOX) ends before the NLCS game, NESN will switch to its postgame coverage with Tom Caron, Jim Rice and Jerry Remy in the studio. Talking about Damon, manny, Pedro and the way teh Red sox act like well, idiots. Being totally serious now, doesn't acting like a professional both in mannerisms and dress make you a better person, baseball player etc.

You go an interview, You always wear a tie and depending on the business you wear a suit. If you played high school or college sports, you were asked to wear a tie to road games so you look professional.

The Red Sox really are a bunch of idiots and that is not a good thing. I think the way they act in the clubhouse and the way they portray themselves as baseball players is the way they play on the field.

You do not have to do almost military like when it comes to the Yankees with short hair and no facial hair except a well groomed mustache, but you should act more professional.

Johnny Damon cutting his nails in the dugout is disgraceful. He disgraces his team and himself. Manny Ramirez and Pedro with their jerri curl haircuts and Arroyo with his cornrows just show a lack of class.

The yankees are probably equally talentwise with the Red Sox but I think a major factor in this series and why it is 3-0 is Joe Torre. he runs a tight ship in his clubhouse and no matter who you are, you are not above the team. If you feel you are , you are shipped out. The Red sox are a bunch of misfits running the asylum. Terry Francona is a disgrace as a manager. A perfect fit for the Red Sox would be Bobby Valentine. He earns respect from his players and he expects the same in return.

Until the Red Sox start acting like professionals, they will always be second class when it counts in October. Put the red Sox in Yankee uniforms and Joe Torre as their manager and it might be 3-0 Red Sox now.

It's a tough delay to swallow. I think Pedro is due to beat the Yanks, and if he does that forces a game 6. Now while I can't make predictions about the outcome of that game it's just one Sox win away from forcing game 7, then it's anybody's ballgame. That's scary, considering we were 3 outs away from a sweep with Mo on the hill.

They should have done a pitchout with Roberts on 1st in the ninth. It couldn't have been clearer that he was going to steal.

I must admit, the Yankees have a strong team.. Especially Sheffield, Matsui, Jeter, + A-Rod after one another is tough... The Yankees are going to win this series.. Although I hate to admit it..

If Boston struggled 12 innings to win 1 game after being clobbered 19 the night before, I don't think they'll win 4 in a row.. especially playing in the Bronx..

What really sux are how long these games last?! Sheesh, 5 hours????????

Here's a very realistic scenario: If the Red Sox win tonight, they are in the same position as they were last year going back to Yankee Stadium. Hard to believe, after all that has happened.

I wish I was Carlos Beltran's agent. In the post season he's hitting .486 with 8hr and 14 rbi. CHA-CHING! He has upped his salary for next year so much in the last 9 games it's ridiculous. Unfortunatly that means only the Yankees have a shot at getting him. Him and Pedro will both be there.

For thse who made fun of me yesterday, Don Zimmer agrees with me in today's Daily News that professionalism has something to do with a team's lack of focus.

Zimmer, of course, makes no apologies for being as "old school" as you can get in baseball. At a banquet in Syracuse last week to raise money for a nursing home, the 73-year-old former Yankee bench coach related how he got into an argument with a Red Sox fan about the difference in styles between the two clubs. The Red Sox fan apparently didn't see how long hair, beards, slovenly uniform pants, earrings and trash talk had anything to do with playing on the field.

"There is something to be said for discipline and professionalism," Zimmer said. "I don't defend Steinbrenner but he does have his rules and I think they're good ones."

So is that his excuse for his Red Sox blowing their AL East lead in 1978? Or why his Cubs tanked in 1984? They weren't "professional" enough?

That's also why the 1993 Phillies lost too right? (Sorry Fluff). The mullets were too much of a distraction?

How does he explain the A's of the 1970s who were encouraged by their owner Charlie Finley to grow long hair and beards? They won three titles in a row.

Were the Pistons distracted by Ben Wallace's afro and Rasheed Wallace's tattoos?

The team won 98 games -- they weren't exactly slackers.

His agent happens to be Scott Boras, who is also Arods agent among a lot of other superstars. You just know Beltran will be making around 19 million starting next year,

Im not liking the fact that its the 6th inning and the Yanks are down by one, we should be up by at least 3. Pedro Martinez, is fucking good. To good to leave Boston. Then again he could always become a Yankee

For once, I agree with the accouncers... Jeter should NOT have been bunting in that spot. Cairo was in scoring position, and Jeter is a clutch hitter. You fuckin' WANT HIM SWINGING in that situation.

A fucking LEAD-OFF DOUBLE and we couldn't bring in a run. You can't ask for more from Cairo than a lead-off double. That is the PERFECT way to start off an inning with the top of your order following behind you... And we couldn't get a fucking run in. WHAT IF JETER HAD SWUNG. FUCK.
