XM Radio Suspends Opie & Anthony
WASHINGTON and NEW YORK, May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XM Radio announced
today that the company has suspended Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia,
hosts of "The Opie & Anthony Show" and ceased broadcast of the show for 30
days, effective immediately.
XM Radio deplored the comments aired on "The Opie & Anthony Show" last week.
At the time, the company strongly expressed its views to Opie and Anthony, and
they issued an immediate apology.
Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday's broadcast put into question
whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM
Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air
talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires
of them.
As a company, XM provides customers with tools to control what they listen to
on XM. "The Opie & Anthony Show" appears on one of XM's explicit language
channels (XL). Whenever a radio is tuned to an explicit language channel, the
letters "XL" continuously appear on the screen. XM frequently mentions on its
explicit language channels that the content may be inappropriate for certain
listeners and tells how to "block" channels that feature this type of
content. Channel blocking is available through xmradio.com or by calling
1-800-XMRADIO.

I almost expected some horseshit like this from CBS, those spineless fucks, but for XM to do this is beyond my wildest imagination. THEY ARE A FUCKING PREMIUM SERVICE AND THEY WARN ABOUT EXTREMEM LANGUAGE. Under those terms, what can you possibly say that is "going too far"?

True.
R&F have done nothing that would remotely draw this kind of attention.
I wonder what they will play in O&A's place (likely worst ofs) and what will CBS do now? Will they follow suit and keep them off the air as well and play worst of? I can already see some of the affiliates playing music like they did during the 2 week vacation.

interesting how they announced this right after news about jerry falwell dying broke. by the time the media frenzy that is sure to follow his death dies down, the suspension will be at least a week old. i wonder if XM was just waiting for a bigger story to break so the media would be distracted. the suspension might be the catalyst to an eventual firing if the wrong people (i.e. the sharptons) are paying attention.

this came from a myspace bulletin from over the weekend
see below
Seinfeld goes, that was the weakest season to be released. Guess what? It outsold every other Season by a longshot. I guess the "bad" publicity helped, and that was a legitimate inflammatory story.
If O&A are further censored or fired, I will completely stop listening to your stations and get my entertainment through satellite radio and my Ipod. There are many other loyal fans to Opie and Anthony and free speech that will be more than happy to neglect your stations in the Arbitron diaries if you disappoint us again.

If a gun were put to my head the bottom of this press release (http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/05-15-2007/0004589074&EDATE)has a possible answer:
XM, the leader in satellite-delivered entertainment and data services
for the automobile market through partnerships with General Motors, Honda,
Hyundai, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota, is available in 140
different vehicle models for 2007. XM's industry-leading products are

If an interest got to XM it the real way would be through those companies. They can't get to them thru subscriptions, but rather XM's corporate partners.

so what are you going to do when Ron and Fez get thrown off the air for making fun of Earl for being black, or Fez for being Gay, or Dave for bestiality talk. The XM you once knew is now dead. My guess is that the suspension isn't because special interest groups called for it, because so far, there has been no public outrage. It's all media complaints.
More likely, XM told the boys to apologize. The boys did. Then the boys made comments that XM felt undermined its authority in telling them to apologize.

I am not sure this is good enough for me. I think that my three subs will be canceled. I'm not going to do it for a few days, as I tend to over-react and make poor decisions.
But why would I pay to listen to watered down comedy? It's insane. It would be like paying for HBO to watch King of Queens instead of Entourage.

My guess is that the suspension isn't because special interest groups called for it, because so far, there has been no public outrage. It's all media complaints.
More likely, XM told the boys to apologize. The boys did. Then the boys made comments that XM felt undermined its authority in telling them to apologize.
so this is basically a fucking power trip on XM's part. that makes a lot of sense.
That's what it appears based on the release. And think about it, unlike the Imus thing, nothing has happened since the story first broke. Imus "outrage" escalated each day.
In this situation, we have some initial media "complaints," O&A apologize, both XM and CBS say there are no plans to fire or suspend OA. The Daily News says that nothing will happen. Then the boys have their show yesterday, and today, and then this comes out today.
So I'd say the above describes what happened.

The only threat at this point is losing the XM gig. But if ELO was right about O and A bringing in alot of monye then I don't think they will fire them either. As far as CBS goes, its unlikely they'll get fired from them seeing how they have stated that they won't remove them. But then again this is alllll speculation. the worst case scenario is that howard Stern broadcasts on both sirius and XM.

I think that is the best move. Wait for a certain day then if we know they are not coming back, everyone dumps XM. I blame this on the whole merger thing. If their as no merger talk, then I really think no one would be making a big stink about the comments. Since the comments were about goverment official and since MEL is ass kissing the goverment, I bet that has somthing to do with it.
Fucking just pissed.
Later
If anyone is to cancel their XM they need to wait for a certain day and do it all at once...To really make an impact....PESTS unite. Lets drive this message home...If XM loses 30,000 subs in one day they will get the picture much like CBS did when their ratings went down, but this way will be much faster.

um, that would be the stockholders. just because soemone's your boss doesn't make them the owner of the company. o&a could suspend e-rock, but that doesn't mean they own xm.
Fair point, but as officers of the company they have a fudicary duty to the stockholders to ensure that the company makes money. Those officers are responible for that, and, as such, they have authority to tell employees to behave or else.
I'm not saying that O&A misbehaved -- XM appears to think so, and suspended them.
mildly amusing
05-15-2007, 11:35 AM

You're exactly right...this has never been about the content of what was said...any throwaway line could have put this in motion...XM obviously wants the merger...any negative media coverage of O&A or XM's handling of the situation could potentially jeopardize that...so basically, any douche blogger with an axe to grind regarding the merger gets to stir the pot and this is what we end up with...
we're not allowed to listen to something we enjoy and fucking pay for because some uptight jerkoff might be offended...it's infuriating...

I don't pay a fee every month to have what comes through my speakers censored!!!! The suspension of Opie and Anthony is an outrage and it puts a black spot on the whole service. I rarely tune my xm unit to any station other than 202. I want my money back for this month... XM without O&A and without the promise of uncensored XL channels is worthless. I guess XM has such a hard-on for this merger (that will never be allowed to happen), they have no problem kicking their current subscribers in the balls. If they were so smart, they wouldn't be losing money hand over fist in the first place. If O&A get fired, I hope they go belly-up. That's what they get for screwing over their customers.

Another press release from xmradio.com....
As you know, XM has suspended Opie & Anthony and ceased all broadcast of The Opie & Anthony Show on The Virus - XM 202 for 30 days, effective May 15, 2007.
Our decision to suspend O&A is a direct result of their May 14th broadcast where it became clear to XM that they do not appreciate the seriousness of last week's on air comments. We give our on air talent creative freedom, however we expect them to take this responsibility seriously.
XM values you as a subscriber, and we are committed to providing you with a service that advocates artistic freedom. We regret any inconvenience this 30-day suspension may cause you.
In the meantime, Ron & Fez will air in place of The O&A Show on XM 202.
If you have comments or questions, please email us at thevirus@xmradio.com

I'm conflicted...it really IS kind of bullshit what happened to O&A.
But at the same time, it doesn't sound like this is a 'censorship issue'...this sounds more like a 'Washington is pissed at them because they think they can blow them off' type of issue.

Reading your later on post about them being on Free... thats VERY interesting. I wonder how their crazy contract is worded to let them still broadcast on FreeFM but not XM.
It wouldn't be that hard to do so. In terms of broadcasting the boys, both sides would have wanted to retain some control over what was broadcast or not.
The one thing Free FM wouldn't want to have happen is XM fires the boys for XM whatever reasons FreeFM doesn't share, and then Free FM can't use the boys because of an XM decision. It makes sense.

Those jerk-asses running XM probably figured a suspension would generate some "thumbs-up" from the TV goons. But now that Falwell died, it will never be mentioned. Good job, fellas. Of course all a suspension does it put blood in the water. No wonder the company has yet to turn a profit.

I'm not sure here, but I don't think you can have a no-compete work where you fire the employee. You can have a no-compete where the employee leaves and tries to work for a competitor, but ultimately you can't tell any employee, you can't work for us, get out -- oh and by the way, you can't work for anyone else either.

No worries budday! Sorry if I came across jerk-ish.

Its ironic, as luck would have it, the antenna port on the back of my car radio head unit... has been busted for like 6 months... but I didn't care, I only listen to XM and Sirius (I'm a dual sub).
So now tomorrow morning I either 1) will not hear O and A or 2) will be bringing my ghetto 5 dollar walmart handheld radio....

Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday's broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM

I'll be really geeky here, but WWE does this to all their contracted wrestlers.
They cannot work for any other wrestling promotion for 90 days after they leave WWE.
The one thing I hope comes out of this that could be good is that since Ron & Fez get the channel for 30 days, that DC actually pays attention to them during this time and AFTER the 30 days when O&A come back (assuming this situation doesn't blow up further), XM decides that Ron & Fez deserve and can carry their own channel and we finally get one.

The fans on this site may be more loyal to Ron and Fez than O&A but if 202 fans as a whole don't make a statement this week then the Ron and Fez show will be the next one targeted by a special interest group. I implore every to make some effort: send an email, make a phone call or temporarily cancel your subscription.

I've seen nothing that makes me believe O&A were suspended because of censorship reasons...if that was the reason XM would have ABSOLUTELY said they were suspending them for the comments they made, just to avoid any possible bad publicity. That's not what they said in their press release.
This sounds more like an in-house thing in which XM basically didn't like their attitude in towards them.

That still doesn't seem right to me. I can see having that type of clause where the contract ends on its own or when the employee leaves, breaches the contract, but not where a firing occurs. I've done a little research on this area, so I have some knowledge but not a great amount.

I realize that the releases were essentially the same, but in the second they felt the need to explain it. Like we didnt understand it. The thinking being that if we got it we wouldnt be upset. Thousands of subscriptions lost in less then a half hour might make them think we werent getting it.

Join PAC and contribute some of your time and/or make a donation.
Write Letters (but please be intelligent and pg rated!).
Get the word out so that we are heard just as clearly as the special interests and other groups who are CLEARLY getting their point across and being responded to.

I said same thing, they gave me three months.
Here's the thing- it would take an OVERWHELMING amount of people to do something incredibly drastic for them to reverse their decision- Once they've made it, they're sticking to it. It's a huge blow to company's reputation (and pride of course) to admit they were wrong. My guess is if they lost, literally lost upwards of 500k subscriptions, then maybe there would be a reversal.
Is there any chance that this decision is coming from a much higher authority? I mean, we all know that GW is similar to lincoln and Hesh in his lust for the sisters.... perhaps it came on his desk and the XM men got a call from one of the current WH reps... just a thought. It wouldn't suprise me.

If you are conflicted then you should at least get your free month - they gave me three for free when I called. Yes it's not lost subs but it is still money out of their pockets. Also, if news starts spreading on blogs, message boards and word of mouth that XM is offering free service to disgruntled subscribers then I'll bet quite a few more subscribers beyond the O&A and R&F fanbase will call to get their discount.

I believe that Infinity wouldn't fire them so that's why they had to sit out the 2 years remaining on their contract. But since they weren't fired, they also had a 90 no-compete in the NYC market to serve hence the start date of around 10/1/05

didnt oprah just make a comment lately- something along the lines of "a black woman measures her success by how many white people work for her"
strange- nobody has made a stint about that.

According to CBS News Opie & Anthony will be on the air tomorrow.
CBS) NEW YORK Nearly a week after radio shock jocks Opie and Anthony received major heat for comments about engaging in sexual acts with Condoleeza Rice, Laura Bush, and Queen Elizabeth II, XM Radio slapped the pair with a 30 day suspension of "The Opie & Anthony Show."
CBS Radio, a unit of CBS Corp., simulcasts a censored daily version of the Opie & Anthony show, which airs uncensored on XM Satellite Radio.
"Our plan is for them to be on-air tomorrow, according to a CBS spokeswoman
On Friday, Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia apologized for their comments, which included punching Rice in the face while having sex with her. The comments were first reported on breitbart.tv, a new video news Web site operated by Andrew Breitbart, a longtime associate of Matt Drudge at the Drudge Report and former entertainment writer who co-authored the book "Hollywood, Interrupted."
"We apologize to the public officials for comments that we made on our XM show on May 9th. We take very seriously the responsibility that comes with our creative freedom and regret any offense that this segment has caused," they said.
But XM officials may not have believed the two had taken the incident seriously.
"Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday's broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them," the company wrote in a release issued Tuesday.
The controversial radio show often features very explicit language and conversation, but because it's aired on satellite radio it's not held down by FCC restrictions.
Opie and Anthony joined XM in 2004, two years after they were fired by CBS Radio for running a contest in which they said two listeners had sex in New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral.
To be fair, this is more about XM being pissed that O&A didn't make a sincere apology and essentially made it known that was the case. They are being suspended because XM wants to show them who is boss.
But how can you be forced to make a sincere apology?!?!?! O&A only apologized because they had to - everybody knows it, so why is XM pissed?
And why do you think XM wanted O & A to appear to have made a sincere apology? Because they're genuinely concerned with what was said on their show? Of course not. It's because they fear having to deal with Sharpton and his ilk.
By "suspending" them they nip it in the bud.
By the way, Opie and Anthony were initially "suspended" by WNEW back in the day, much like JV & Elvis were recently "suspended" by FreeFM.
I love Ron and Fez more than you could imagine, but I think a mass cancelling of subscriptions is the only way to send a message.

Please don't call up XM and demand a refund or a free month. If you call, you have to ask to cancel your sub, and be prepared to do it. THEN they will make the offer.
I am 10% O&A fan, 90% R&F fan, but I was prepared to live w/o them both because this issue (stopping the political empowerment of minority action groups) is too important right now.
I hate to say this, but if Dice books a gig at Giants Stadium, I will be there. He's our Superman now.

Gotta hand it to Opie he's always thinking ahead. The merger looming and hoohoo with his ego complex. All of a sudden they get fired when they could have presented it (XM side) Now they play ball and sign a new FM deal
Bravo Sir!

Free FM has got to be loving this. I suspect that they will have a huge boost in their ratings now that the boys can only be heard there. I'm sure that Ron and Fez have a lot more listeners to their Free FM show because they are not on XM at the same time. I know that I would probably just listen to them on XM if I had the choice. Now I'll be checking out O& A exclusively on Free FM. It sounds so wrong for some reason.

So i sent in my letter to the xm address list provided...
To whom it may concern,
History will ultimately look back on this era as an embarassing time of overreaction, rule by the minority and Corporate failing or as the beginning of the downfall of democracy. Democracy, you see, is founded upon free speech, and as such, unpopular speech must also be the most vigorously defended. I'm sure you've heard that before, but it probably doesnt ring as loud in your ear when you feel your bottom line is being threatened. Who, after all, would risk thier career and thier medium to stand up for tasteless jokes? But first it's the tasteless jokes, and then its the tasteless news, and then its the politcally slanted news, and finally we are left with a sanitized media controlled by the few, and not in the service of the people, like it should be.
Your decision to suspend Opie and Anthony for a month puts you in the unique and fortunate position to make an important decision. Do you plan to really be the alternative to the lost medium that Radio has become? Do you plan to stand for free speech and allow your digital air to be open and unfettered, in contrast to the analog air the special interests have long since sanitized? Or instead, do you plan to buckle for the bottom line? Do you plan to become the whipping post of the special interests? The servant to the minority? If that is case, Fire Opie and Anthony right now and save us all the long agonizing demise.
If you do plan to stand behind your resolution to not be censored by the private or public sectors alike, then, when this rediculous suspension has been served, welcome back your flagship show with a new resolve to defend them, and provide for them the platform for thier liberty that you would wish provided for you and your passion, whatever it may be.

my letter...
I have been an XM subscriber since the day that Opie and Anthony joined. Besides being a long-time fan of the show, I am a huge supporter of both free speech and new technology, making their move to XM a great time for me. I was excited that the show could exist on a medium supportive of free speech, far removed from the confines of terrestrial radio.
Now I am turing BACK to FM to get my entertainment? Do you see something wrong with this picture? Congratulations, you have shown that XM is nothing close to the hip alternative you try so hard and push it as. XM is just another huge company that has lost the understanding of what means teh most - the customers. How many XM subscribers complained? Even further, how many non-XM subscribers complained? Just because someone has a megaphone doesn't mean that their points are more valid.
Stop letting an unbelieveably small, voacl minority dictate 99%'s unique morality. If I find something offensive in my life, I TURN IT OFF. Are people so dumb in this country that we need a company like XM or some advocasy group to let everyone else know where their moral line is / should be?
If Opie and Anthony do not return, I don't either, and A LOT of others will be doing the same. Your company is trapped in a world of PR dealing with uninformed "outraged" people instead of doing the PR with those who count, the customers.
I am ashamed that for years I promoted XM with the energy and enthusiasm that I did. Word of mouth is a strong tool, a tool that I and many other XM fans have used over the last few years to increase both awareness and subscriptions. Now, you have turned that against yourselves.
Good luck, bro.

Ive already cancelled my XM, and yes they will offer free months. They offered me two and I told them to go fuck themselves. I can get the show (if it still exists, hopefully it does) from newsbin, they can go fuck themselves. A mass cancelling of subs is the only way to go about this.

this is from Zagman, who I think it is a mod or admin at wackbag. it is a big red announcement at the top of wackbag
I have just received word that O&A have been FIRED from XM!!!
I was told this by an extremely trusted source, and not an employee/relative of an XM employee.
Get on the phone, cancel your XM. DO NOT take the 30-day credit - CANCEL it! XM will feel that much more on their bottom line than a 30-day dip.
If XM feels the sting of thousands of people canceling their subs, then there is some sort of a chance!

I didn't even hear the comment. I was just going by Ant's post. You are right about the "outrage" being there. Maybe because the main comment was made by a black man.
Partly that, and because there weren't any racial statements. Remember, the comments were about Laura Bush, the Queen, and Condi Rice.

Are you fucking kidding me
got much of an inferiority complex ass hat?
This is not a divide an conquer, and try to say that R&F are better than O&A
alot of us are fans of Ron and Fez because of O&A
without O&A there really isnt R&F in NY or XM
put aside your pettiness and support the boys
glad to see most of ya are apart of the team
Who has the inferiority complex here? Ron and Fez are their own show, they are brilliant, funny individuals. It may shock you to hear, but the buddies had a show when O+A didn't. To say they wouldn't be on the air without O+A does sound like you are not apart of the 'team' you talk about.
Considering most people in this world work, which requires going to bed before midnight, and concievably might not let them listen live (streaming is block at work)--some people are going to get to hear the show that never get to listen. I wouldn't blame anyone for being excited to be able to hear the show. If Ron and Fez actually had a decent repeat slot during the day, I doubt there would be a single person expressing excitement.
And for the record I don't agree with the original post, but can 100% see where they are coming from.
