Up in the Air will win for Best Picture. Jeff Bridges for Best Actor. Fat black girl for Precious. Those are my early guesses for 3 movies I haven't seen yet.

I really hope the Best Actress nomination is indeed made in the name of "Fat Black Rape Victim".

Nothing from '09 really strikes me as a clear-cut frontrunner. Frankly, I think it should be Bastards' year, but the violent, history-revising nature of it appears to be a roadblock that's prevented industry analysts from taking it seriously on that scale. The perception some have of Avatar as a technical exercise will thwart it from being seriously considered to win it all no matter how much money it makes. Maybe it is Hurt Locker's year after all. The critics are still vocal in going bonanza over it, and that enthusiasm could carry over to the voting body. I'm not a huge fan of that film but I'd be thrilled as a Kathryn Bigelow fan to see her get recognized in the director category.

Right now I'm thinking Avatar will have an Oscar performance much like Titanic's: a clean sweep of technical awards (especially Best Visual Effects and Art Direction, but others like cinematography and editing as well), and probably Best Director for Cameron and Best Picture, but no acting awards, and no writing award.

Bigelow wins DGA, making her the odds-on favorite to take home Best Director. DGA winners go on to win at the Oscars at an uncanny clip. Prepare for your throat to be crammed by the media overexposure surrounding the probability of a female prevailing in this category for the first time. The funny thing is, I have no expectation that she's going to pull a Halle Berry and blubber about doors being opened in her acceptance speech. By all accounts, she's been annoyed her entire career by the media fascination that a woman director could have a tendency to gravitate toward virile storylines.

Bigelow's career in general is difficult to figure. I would love to have a clear explaination from the director on what exactly is her view of men.

I'm still thinking Avatar will pretty much sweep everything outside of writing and acting awards, because the Academy would like to award the huge massive box office hit this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if Bigelow takes Best Director because too many people think Cameron is a douche.

I think Hurt Locker winning Best Original Screenplay is about as sure a lock as you've got in the Oscars, though. It'll be like the way it was the only award Pulp Fiction won as Forrest "Be A Dumbass, Get Rewarded, Live Like You Want, Die of AIDS" Gump swept otherwise.

Up is a really good movie. And while I feel good for the guy who made District 9 and I'm glad that they can now give recognition to feel good stories like that the last half of that movie was so generic that it just can't be in that list.

No, but that's because they don't respect an animated movie no matter how good it is. In my opinion it should. I can't name 5 other movies better than Up this year.

This year's telecast looks like it's going to be the ceremonial equivalent of Ambien. The major categories are all foregone conclusions, including Picture and Director which will be either split configuration of Avatar-Bigelow or Locker-Cameron. Maybe Coraline will pull an UPset for Animated Feature to perk things up a little (I'd be ecstatic if this happened because I'm definitely in the Ron Bennington camp of thinking that the Pixar worship among grown adults has gotten more than a little blown out of proportion). Expanding the field to ten was the dumbest idea since New Coke - now 80% of the nominees have no chance, and inclusion was given to stuff which frankly has no business being in the race.

As much as I liked Up I think Fantastic Mr. Fox deserves best animated and a Best picture nom of its own instead of District 9. Pixar worship is justified, their worst movies are good and no person or entity their amount of quality movies. But this year was strong for animated films with Up, Mr. Fox and Coraline.

I enjoyed Toy Story and Finding Nemo very much, but I haven't been a huge fan of all Pixar films. I'd say they are still geared towards kids and it's hard to get over that. It's like considering professional wrestling high-art. There are definitely moments of high-art in professional wrestling (acrobatics, drama), but overall it's geared towards children and the lowest-common denominator so it would ultimately be impossible to shed its low-art label.

And what's wrong with that? Why do Pixar films HAVE to transcend being films geared towards children?

My upset special: Maggie Gyllenhaal over Mo'nique.

Hurt Locker for Best Picture? I don't see it. The Academy won't want to appear out of touch by recognizing a film that made virtually no dinero. It didn't help that actual military people are speaking out against the authenticity of it, and a producer broke nomination rules by sending out a mass email urging voters to support it at the expense of the other nominees soley because it had the smallest production costs. The fascination the critics and bloggers have for it doesn't seem like it's transferred over on a wide scale to mainstream audiences, which is kind of weird because at the end of the day, it's an action-thriller and not some inaccessible war polemic. Some of the praise for the film about its status as the definitive war film of our generation I think is a little overblown because of the various liberties it takes with combat realism.

I'm in the Fez camp of thinking that Basterds is going to shock the world. "Harvey Does It Again" is going to be the headline from the morning after. Shakespeare in Love all over again. I love Avatar, believe me - I'm embarrassed to say in electronically transmitted print how many times I saw it - but it won't overcome the sci-fi stigma where voters will write it off as spectacle hooey. Fantasy or sci-fi can only prevail in the top cateogry if it's fortunate enough to be based on prestigious text a la LOTR.

I still think Avatar's gonna sweep, because I think a large part of the Academy feels stung by criticism they're "elitist" and only nominating critically approved movies that no one actually saw. They want to award a big, huge, massive box-office hit, and they've got their chance.

I think it will win Best Picture and pretty much all the technical awards it's nominated for. They'll throw Kathyrn Bigelow Best Director, but that's pretty much it.

I really think Inglorious Basterds has a shot because of the new voting system and having to rank each movie. I think enough people could rank Avatar low because its not an art film and was such a huge movie and could rank the Hurt Locker low because of the controversy recently and IB could sneak in. Probably not but I hope so.

Tom O'Neill's inside stuff.

BEST PICTURE
"The Hurt Locker" seems to have the most No. 1 votes in this Oscars derby, followed by "Avatar," but, remember, a preferential ballot is being used that requires voters to rank Academy Award choices. Just as both films have strong advocates, they both have many detractors who gave those pix low ranking on their ballots. Most voters have "Inglourious Basterds" ranked in the top three. Upset? If I were betting a ranch, I'd put it on "Hurt Locker," but since I'm merely wagering my professional reputation, I'm sticking with "Basterds."

BEST ACTOR
Jeff Bridges ("Crazy Heart") can't lose because he's got everything going for him. He is an overdue veteran (four past losses) and plays drunk. Oscar voters are suckers for that. Think Nicolas Cage ("Leaving Las Vegas") or, in terms of recent upset, James Coburn ("Affliction").

BEST ACTRESS
Most pundits say Sandra Bullock ("The Blind Side") will win easily, but that's not what you hear when dishing with academy members. Their votes are split all over the place. Meryl Streep ("Julie & Julia"), Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious") are really in this race. Many voters don't believe that Bullock's performance is really Oscar-worthy in the film, so that makes her vulnerable, but I still think she'll prevail. Heck, no one really thought Reese Witherspoon gave the best performance of the year in "Walk the Line" (she was really a supporting player giving a rather passive performance), but she won anyway. Bullock's already won the Golden Globe and SAG Award. With rare exceptions like Julie Christie ("Away From Her") and Lauren Bacall ("The Mirror Has Two Faces"), that almost always equals Oscar victory.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR AND ACTRESS
Christoph Waltz ("Inglourious Basterds") and Mo'Nique ("Precious") have won everything and are thus unstoppable. Only once in modern history has a star won every major precursor award, then failed to nab the Oscar: Michelle Pfeiffer ("Fabulous Baker Boys") was stopped by Jessica Tandy ("Driving Miss Daisy").

BEST DIRECTOR
Even if "Avatar" or "Inglourious Basterds" wins best picture, Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker") will still prevail here because Oscar is ashamed that he's never given this prize to a woman.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
"Up" looms above all rivals because it's the only nominee here also in the running for best picture, a rare accomplishment.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Close race between "The White Ribbon" (Germany), "The Secret in Their Eyes" (Argentina) and "A Prophet" (France). "Ribbon" won Cannes' Palme d'Or, which is usually the kiss of death in this race, but it has the snooty art-house appeal that the other nominees don't. We hear that "Secret" played best among academy members who attended the screenings in L.A. and New York -- it generated the most buzz in the lobby afterward -- but it's a crime thriller that may seem too much like a TV episode of "C.S.I." "Prophet" is a violent mafia flick a lot like "Gomorrah," which many pundits thought would win last year, but it didn't even get nominated. So I'm picking recent Golden Globe champ "White Ribbon" because of its pretentiousness and snob appeal.

BEST SCREENPLAY (ORIGINAL)
Quentin Tarantino won this for "Pulp Fiction" and should claim this again, but not if there's a "Hurt Locker" juggernaut. My prediction is that Tarantino will prevail, but sweeps can be powerful things at the Oscars.

BEST SCREENPLAY (ADAPTED)
"Up in the Air" has this in the bag.

BEST MUSIC (ORIGINAL SCORE)
"Up" has this in the bag.

BEST MUSIC (ORIGINAL SONG)
"The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart)" from "Crazy Heart" is a slam-dunk shoo-in.

BEST ART DIRECTION
Technically, this award goes to the production and set designers, so voters associate this category with the set. The set of "Avatar" is largely digital, so voters may pooh-pooh it in favor of "The Young Victoria," "Nine" or "Sherlock Holmes," but I'm betting they'll give "Avatar" its due here.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
"Avatar" is my official prediction, but I'm queasy. The movie that wins usually has the most obvious cinematography -- big, sprawling, epic sweep. Those big, sprawling desert scenes in "Hurt Locker" could result in victory here. There's an off chance that "White Ribbon" could win because it has the most pretentious lensing -- that is, all black and white footage.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
Remember, voters don't like anything subtle in these crafts categories, so the most frilly, ornate costumes usually win, especially if they're draped over royals. Consider the last three winners: "The Duchess," "Elizabeth: The Golden Age," "Marie Antoinette." That means "The Young Victoria" will reign supreme this year.

BEST DOCUMENTARY (FEATURE)
"The Cove" has the right mix of critical appeal and box-office ka-ching that usually results in victory. There's an off chance that "Food, Inc." or "Pentagon Papers" could upset.

BEST DOCUMENTARY (SHORT SUBJECT)
I haven't seen these contenders, but I hear that "China's Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province" is the most gripping weepie and that usually pays off. Entertainment Weekly is betting on "Music by Prudence" because it's a heart-tugger about a disabled African singer. Lots of other pundits are betting on "The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant" because it's relevant to America's economy mess, but it's about trailer trash folks whom snooty Oscar voters usually scorn. If there's a surprise here, it's "The Last Campaign of Governor Booth Gardner," which documents the struggle of the former Washington governor to legalize assisted suicide while he suffers from Parkinson's disease. My prediction is "Disaster," but I have little confidence in it.

BEST FILM EDITING
The most obviously edited movie wins -- the one with the most zigzagging, chop-chop camera work. That's "The Hurt Locker."

BEST MAKEUP
"Star Trek" wins thanks to pointed ears and weird aliens.

BEST SHORT FILM (ANIMATED)
"A Matter of Loaf and Death" has this easily because Wallace and Gromit films almost always prevail. A few have won this category in the past ("The Wrong Trousers," "A Close Shave") and another ("Curse of the Were-Rabbit") won best animated feature.

BEST SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION)
I'm betting on "Kavi" because it's a gut-wrenching tale of modern-day slavery in India -- kind of "Slumdog Millionaire" (best pic champ last year), but real. Some pundits are betting on "The Door" because of its quirkiness, enhanced production values and message (about the Chernobyl nuclear disaster). Others say "The New Tenants," which is about an annoying gay couple spooked by what occurs when they move into a new apartment, but I think the chaps are way too annoying.

BEST SOUND EDITING
The sound awards usually go to the loudest movies, which mean "Avatar" or "The Hurt Locker" this year. "Avatar" may have the edge because this category favors blockbusters like past winners "The Dark Knight" and "King Kong." But I'm betting on "Hurt Locker" here for two reasons. There's a lot of love for this film and voters will want to spread it around. Secondly, it probably strikes voters as the loudest film because it's about bombs going off (or not going off). Recent winner in this category was another war movie up for best picture, "Letters From Iwo Jima."

BEST SOUND MIXING
Let's explain the difference between these sound categories. Editing refers to how the individual sounds were chosen and edited into the film. Mixing is, literally, how they all mix together. Sometimes the same movie wins both awards ("The Bourne Ultimatum," "King Kong") and that's what I'm counting on this year. However, the two races usually split. Because of that, some Oscarologists are betting that "Avatar" will win editing and "Hurt Locker" will claim mixing. They each won those equivalent guild awards recently, so that does make sense. But when do the Oscars make sense?

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
"Avatar" can't possibly lose, of course

I didn't listen to any of the tv audio because of the R&F airing and I still thought this year's telecast was a stinker for the ages. When I was young the ceremony seemed to be filled with so much weight and relevancy, and now all it does is inspire douche chills. 2002 and 2006 were good for the shocking upsets in the top categories and Marty finally getting over the hump, respectively, but other than that it was very much a forgettable decade at the Oscars in terms of compelling viewing. Also, I should've known better than to think that surprise winners could be announced in an era where the voters fall into line with a hive mentality.

Granted, she was rude and incredibly inappropriate, but her name was announced as a winner and their was a second Oscar trophy for her. I think Williams and Burkett both acted like children. If they had any integrity whatsoever, the award would have been about the band.

I've always wondered why the Oscars' attempts to cut the length of the show almost always involve shortening speeches, rather than cutting some of the nonsensical dance numbers and other bits. Like the "Tribute to Horror". Really?

Why is he putting on a second pair of sunglasses in addition to the sunglasses he's already wearing?

Which reminds me...can someone who wears glasses wear 3-D glasses?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences itself was conceived by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio boss Louis B. Mayer. The Academy Awards that is known as the Oscars are accolades by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers. The formal ceremony at which the awards are presented is one of the most prominent award ceremonies in the world. It is also the oldest award ceremony in the media, and many other award ceremonies such as the Grammy Awards Golden Globe Awards Tony Awards and Emmy Awards are often modeled from the Academy.

But why does it seem to decrease peoples enjoyment of the show that the person who was being made fun of didn't enjoy it? Isn't the whole point of a really caustic joke that someone is taking it on the chin? There's no collusion on the part of Robert Downey Jr or Bruce Willis, they're just showing up to an award ceremony. There's nothing about that which requires or expects them to be a good sport.

It was really funny and if the Golden Globes wants to act sheepish or offended thats just insane, because you hired Gervais to do exactly what he did and have to be somewhat happy that people are talking about your shitty awards ceremony this week. But something happened in this country, at the same time everyone got obsessed with the notion that we are over sensative, they also developed the idea that noone has the right to be offended anymore. One is not the opposite of the other. Anyone can be offended by literally anything, and should always have the right to express that.

I think I'm more concerned for Gervais because he will probably suffer more than any of his targets.

again? I dont like this. It makes it look like they are doing it only to give out noms and get more sales. When some are deserving! Not that some arent good movies but it lessens the value of the nomination. IMO

What they should do is created some comedy categories. Im tired of great comedic performances and movies always getting fucked when it possibly could be that the comedy was the best movie of the year! In some cases the comedic actors miss out of wins and nominations because they rather give it to a more "serious" film/actor even if it/their not as deserving!

If only there was a prequel to Boondock Saints starring the Kennedy brothers. I would win a million Irish Oscars.

Why would a loving God let Kirk Douglas do this?

All though a little of what he did was funny that was so uncomfortable to watch. They really dropped the ball on that idea!

I think everyone knew Melissa Leo was going to win. Her acceptance speech went perfect for the disaster that award turned out to be. One of the worst I have ever seen. I cant wait to see the fighter when it comes out on DVD. I think Marky Mark is a terrible actor but the rest of the cast and the movie itself looks good!
