MUD is amazingly overrated.
It's good, but it's isn't "an instant American classic!" like Shawshank was... or Pulp Fiction... or Forrest Gump (which people now pretend to have always hated)... or any of those "this movie belongs in The Library Of Congress" type of films.
It's just a good little movie. It's a little boring, actually.

The praise that it's receiving now is undeserved.
I think it's all bandwagon bullshit.

That movie is a B- .... at best.

TOTALLY agree with your Forest Gump statement...I absolutely hate when the hipsters tell me I was wrong for liking a movie

remember, it's okay to enjoy a movie the hipsters say you shouldn't enjoy...in fact, I like them more (same with music...LOVE the Eagles)

you were saying that weren't you...or did I stumble upon a real hipster

Dell,
You got it right.
I am bothered that, nowadays, you can't find even one single person that loves Forrest Gump. I honestly think that the general public doesn't know the difference between bad art, or being sick of good art.

This happens with music all the time. ("Hotel California sucks, man." "I never cared for Michael Jackson.")

TV shows ("Seinfeld blows!")

And films usually get KILLED a few years after they're loved. ("Jurassic Park is terrible." "Star Wars is so lame.")

I bet these revisionist hipsters tyat make these claims are also the same people who love to tell you that they "don't even OWN a television."

Hi Paulo. Your life's a movie.
this is a sincere question;
what is so great about MUD? What am I missing here??

Everybody heaps praise on it, and I simply do not understand why.
I've read reviews that call it "a perfect movie" and "an immediate classic". Can you enlighten me as to what these critics are seeing that I'm not seeing? They are enamored.... and I was rather bored.

When you have a moment, please expand on why you loved this movie so much.

I didn't see this in the theater, I watched it at home and I couldn't wait for it to end. I kept turning it off, then watching 15 minutes, then pausing it again.

It's too long, a half hour could have easily been cut out of it. Get rid of the sub-plots of the kid's parents' marital problems and their losing their houseboat; get rid of that kid's love life with that older girl (never believable) and all the time spent discussing Mud's shirt. I get that it's a movie about love but they should have focused on Mud and his relationships with those around him (IMHO, of course).

I always had the feeling Matthew McConaughey was ACTING. Tye Sheridan, Sam Shepard, and Reese Witherspoon (Reese looks good) were believable. And, hey, it's always nice to see Joe Don Baker.

It's not one of those movies I'll watch again, even in a few years. Tighten it up and it would be an OK independent film.

When we think of the term classic, it tends to get lost in all that high school literature reading lists.
I mentioned To Kill a Mockingbird because I think there is a strong connection.
The two young boys are the heart of the story. It's like Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, updated. They are on their own adventure and they meet this mythic character in the woods. He is someone they admire even though in their heart they know he is crazy.
Mud is on his own mythic journey that maybe only he will truely ever understand.
I can't overstate how much I loved the movie and how proud of Matthew for taking himself more seriously. Dallas Buyer's Club is awesome and I haven't even seen The Wolf of Wall Street yet.
