Bud Greenspan...DEAD
Bud Greenspan, the filmmaker whose documentaries often soared as triumphantly as the Olympic athletes he chronicled for more than six decades, died at his home in New York City. He was 84.
He died Saturday from complications of Parkinson's disease, companion Nancy Beffa said.
"Bud was a storyteller first and foremost. He never lost his sense of wonder and he never wavered in the stories he wanted to tell, nor how he told them," she said. "No schmaltzy music, no fog machines, none of that. He wanted to show why athletes endured what they did and how they accomplished what so few people ever do."
Even as controversies over politics, performance-enhancing drugs and commercialism increasingly vied for attention on the planet's grandest sporting stage, Greenspan remained uncompromising about his focus on the most inspirational stories.
"I spend my time on the 99 percent of what's good about the Olympics and most people spend 100 percent of their time on the 1 percent that's negative. I've been criticized for seeing things through rose-colored glasses, but the percentages are with me," he said in an interview with ESPN.com nearly a decade ago.
Read more: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/12/27/1936340/bud-greenspan-filmed-olympians.html#ixzz19Hqh4wOE
His documentaries were OK, but you gotta lay most of the blame for the Olympics turning into a "up close and personal" schmalzfest at his feet.

This guy was a mad man
1954 (age 40): swam the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, underwater, with 140 pounds (64 kg; 10 st) of equipment, including two air tanks. A world record.
1955 (age 41): swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco while handcuffed. When interviewed afterwards he was quoted as saying that the worst thing about the ordeal was being handcuffed, which reduced his chance to Star Jump significantly.
1956 (age 42): set a world record of 1,033 push-ups in 23 minutes on You Asked For It, a television program with Art Baker.
1957 (age 43): swam the Golden Gate channel while towing a 2,500-pound (1,100 kg; 180 st) cabin cruiser. The swift ocean currents turned this one-mile (1.6 km) swim into a swimming distance of 6.5 miles (10.5 km).
1958 (age 44): maneuvered a paddleboard nonstop from Farallon Islands to the San Francisco shore. The 30-mile (48 km) trip took 9.5 hours.
1959 (age 45): did 1,000 star jumps and 1,000 chin-ups in 1 hour, 22 minutes and The Jack LaLanne Show went nationwide.
1974 (age 60): For the second time, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf. Again, he was handcuffed, but this time he was also shackled and towed a 1,000-pound (450 kg; 71 st) boat.
1975 (age 61): Repeating his performance of 21 years earlier, he again swam the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge, underwater and handcuffed, but this time he was shackled and towed a 1,000-pound (450 kg; 71 st) boat.
1976 (age 62): To commemorate the "Spirit of '76", United States Bicentennial, he swam one mile (1.6 km) in Long Beach Harbor. He was handcuffed and shackled, and he towed 13 boats (representing the 13 original colonies) containing 76 people.
1979 (age 65): towed 65 boats in Lake Ashinoko, near Tokyo, Japan. He was handcuffed and shackled, and the boats were filled with 6,500 pounds (2,900 kg; 460 st) of Louisiana Pacific wood pulp.[12]
1980 (age 66): towed 10 boats in North Miami, Florida. The boats carried 77 people, and he towed them for over one mile (1.6 km) in less than one hour.
1994 (age 80): Once again handcuffed and shackled, he fought strong winds and currents as he swam 1.5 miles (2.4 km) while towing 80 boats with 80 people from the Queensway Bay Bridge in the Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary.

Some giant fatass you'd probably never heard of before...DEAD
A 575-pound man who gained a measure of fame as spokesman for the Heart Attack Grill — a Phoenix-area restaurant that unabashedly touts its unhealthy, high-calorie menu — has died.
Friends of 29-year-old Blair River say he died Tuesday, possibly from contracting pneumonia after a bout with the flu.
Restaurant founder Jon Basso told The Arizona Republic that River was more than the larger-than-life caricature he portrayed in promoting the restaurant in Chandler, which includes huge hamburgers, milkshakes and fries cooked in lard on its menu.
Basso said River was a creative genius who had been planning to take part in the shooting of a promotional spot called, "Heart Attack Grill: The Musical."
I can't imagine why this picture of health died so young.

I remember how leading up to the election my Social Studies teacher made such a big deal about how a woman was running for vice-president and spent like a week going over the history of the Women's Rights movement. She really stressed what a monumental moment in history we were living through. Oh how the ninth grade girls lorded that over us boys and walked around like they were the Queens of all that they surveyed - at least until the first Wednesday after the first Monday in November, 1984.
And here we are, 26 years later, and a black guy has been elected president and still nothing for them. If the only black kid in my high school back then, Darwin (yes his first name was really Darwin), knew then what he knows now he would have gotten a good chuckle about it.
Also, being from an Italian-Amercan family you would have thought she would have been a source of pride but my entire family was REAL old school Italian. I remember overhearing discussions at a family gathering where people were basically saying things like: "Why is she running? Doesn't she have a family and husband she should be home cooking for?" Then it turned out her husband had Mafia ties or something.
Well, that's my eulogy to Geraldine Ferraro. If the family would like me to speak at her funeral I can try and free up my schedule and work it in.

I was only 11 at the time Ferraro was on the ticket but I would always hear vote for Mondale/Ferraro because she has an italian background. Same thing went when Cuomo was up for reelection to many people it was if they had a vowel at the end of their last name vote for them regardless of party/ideals.

I grew up in an Italian neighborhood and most of the people hated her. My grandmother loathed her for alot of the reasons Smails said. "She should be home doing laundry".
Im not surprised weve had a black president before a woman. If the GOP keeps throwing out all these women as possible candidates they are gonna lose again in 2012. I dont see a woman becoming president unless shes got fucking charisma that just goes off the charts. Everyone thinks they have a good shot because they think all women will just vote for a woman and thats so off. Women fucking HATE each other.

We can't blame Ferraro for Mondale's defeat, he would have lost no matter who he was running with. One of the factors in choosing a running-mate is it's expected they'll carry their home state. No only did they lose New York, they didn't even carry the Congressional district she represented. She would have been better off if she just stayed in the House of Representatives.

I could have sworn he died like four year ago.
He actually directed a pretty damn good movie, "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead", in 2007.
He's one of our more underrated directors. I don't think he had an instantly recognizable style, like a Hitchcock or a Kubrick or even a Tarantino, and in a lot of his greatest movies, the credit for the movie being great went to other people, like the way Paddy Chayefsky's screenplay (justifiably) is given the credit for "Network." And there are some pretty shit movies mixed in with his great movies.
But his great movies are some of the all time classics.

Watching "Dog Day Afternoon" right now. God damn this is a great movie. This has to be Pacino's best performance: it taps into his intensity, but it's not over-the-top and silly like he'd get later in shitty movies like "Scent of a Woman." It works for the character; Sonny is, obviously, in an incredibly intense situation, so that craziness is necessary here.
And you gotta think Lumet had a lot to do with getting that performance out of him. Watching it now, thinking about him after his death, I see what an incredibly directed movie this is. He doesn't call attention to his own genius with camera tricks, or cheap cinematic tricks; he knows to stand back and let the story and the performances do the work. Lumet knew that a director can just as easily fuck up a movie as make it great. Too many directors don't get that.

I dont care what anyone says, 12 angry men was his best movie. He should have won an Oscar for it! Any movie that can take place in pretty much 1 room, with 12 great actors and show that much range and emotions all within the time of the movie without changing a thing is just amazing!
Anyone who loves movies needs to have watched it. One of the best movies ever made and he was only in his early 30s when he directed it! What a career!

People should know better that these things are jobs that make money selling every day crap and put a pretty label on them. But that should or isnt illegal is it? for instance I was talking to a friend about hdmi cables. He bought 1 at best buy for like $100 or close to it. I told him all hdmi cables work the same and he over spent by $95 and all he got was pretty packaging and he had his choice of colors. Should the company that sells those overpriced hdmi cables be arrested/fined and shit down?

For whatever reason this really bummed me out. I think The Green Album is one of the most underrated albums I have ever heard and the guy made some pretty awesome contributions to the outsider art movement.

Good grief! Everytime I look up an actor I can't remember, he/she turns up to have appeared on Love American Style! Coincedence? Has anyone investigated a link between the show and deaths? I mean, besides the fact that the show was on in the 70's and everyone who appeared on it is probably over 70 by now. I mean, besides that.

CINCINNATI (Reuters) - Character actor Daniel von Bargen, who has appeared in dozens of movies and television shows including "Seinfeld" and "Malcolm in the Middle," was hospitalized after shooting himself in the head at his Cincinnati-area condominium, authorities said Wednesday.
Von Bargen, 61, told a Cincinnati-area emergency dispatcher on Monday that he had shot himself in the temple with a .38-caliber pistol at his home and could not open his left eye.
"I shot myself in the head and I need help," von Bargen told the emergency dispatcher in a call from his home in Montgomery, Ohio, northeast of Cincinnati.
