It could, but I'm going to be the optimist here and let the president set the agenda before I make a judgement call on him. I like his way of modeling his cabinet the way Lincoln did-fill it with adversaries who are free to speak their mind. That's a lot healthier then filling it full of yes men.

I think you're setting yourself up for a huge letdown given there's zero indication anyone is "going after the guns" and this is all completely constructed in the gun purchasers' heads.

The big thing the Democrats want to see is UHC pushed through to reduce public expenditure on health care*, lower rates of preventable mortalities and help businesses grow. Daschle is one of the key people in the UHC push so it's natural for him to be selected.

*it costs taxpayers at min. around $40k per uninsured person to visit the hospital -- allowing people to have a regular doctor to treat them for minor occurrences drastically reduces the spending necessary to keep hospitals afloat. That is one of the prime reasons to start a UHC program. If you're against UHC, you're a horrible human being with no heart and also have no understanding of the problems plaguing medicine. There's no reason to be against it unless you work for a health insurance company.

Here's the thing, though: the problem with Bush appointments isn't so much at the Cabinet level, it's the pack of cronies and dumbasses packed into lower, less visible, spots, like "Heckuva Job" Brownie, who got the job coordinating the nation's response to disasters after running horse shows. Or the fact that a lot of the lawyer jobs at the Justice Department went to graduates of Pat Robertson's Jesus Law School.

But after seeing his Cabinet, I feel good that Obama will make sure the lower spots are similarly staffed with quality picks.

Richardson withdraws bid to Commerce Secretary (http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=2009-01-04_D95GG8L80&show_article=1&cat=breaking)

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has withdrawn his nomination to be President-elect Barack Obama's commerce secretary amid a grand jury investigation.

Obama's transition office said Sunday that Obama has accepted Richardson's withdrawal.

A federal grand jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson's political activities won a lucrative New Mexico state contract.

A person familiar with the proceedings has told The Associated Press that the grand jury is looking into possible "pay-to-play" dealings between CDR Financial Products and someone in a position to push the contract through with the state of New Mexico.

Damn. I always liked the Governor too.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is withdrawing his nomination to be commerce
secretary, citing the distraction of a federal investigation into ties to a company that has
done business with his state.

Gov. Bill Richardson said a probe focused on him would delay work toward bettering the
economy.

Two Democratic officials told CNN the investigation involves a California company that won
municipal bond business in New Mexico after contributing money to various Richardson
causes.

No matter who you voted for, or what party you belong to, or which political side of the fence you are on, Tuesday is our day to shine.

Not even about our first black president, no, Tuesday is bigger then that.

Tuesday is once again the day the United States of America shows the world the prize of democracy, which is the peaceful transfer of power every 4-8 years.

My fellow Americans, we are blessed to be together during days like this.

Obama aide: Military advisers to meet on first day (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i1fYw0sRtCqSGZqL0hXPCNjB9aDgD95P5H7G0)

On his first full day as president, Barack Obama will meet with high-ranking military officers to discuss the Iraq war, a conflict he has vowed to end after six years of fighting, a top adviser to Obama said Saturday.

Wednesday's meeting of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other military commanders and aides will fulfill a key campaign promise and bring the war back to the political forefront after months of being overshadowed by the economy.

Especially in the early stages of his two-year campaign, Obama vowed to wind down the war in Iraq, a stance that helped him eclipse Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic primaries.

In the past year or so, however, Iraq lost prominence in the national debate, and Obama gave himself some wiggle room on his goal of withdrawing U.S. troops within 16 months. He also stressed the need to pump more U.S. military power into Afghanistan, where Taliban fighters control substantial parts of the country.

Speaking of Iraq in July, Obama said: "I intend to end this war. My first day in office, I will bring the Joint Chiefs of Staff in, and I will give them a new mission, and that is to end this war responsibly and deliberately but decisively."

Obviously the new President plans to hit the ground running.

I also hope that his supporters will call him out when he messes up. As I hope everyone else will praise him if he does right.

Its a tiresome and lazy myth that is being spread by right-wing talkers. All they do is spew a line such as "these people who think Obama is the Messiah are going to be greatly disappointed"....blah, blah, blah.

Then two minutes later they spew an urban myth about a crazy black woman from "town X" who didn't pay her "bill Y". The punchline to the story is always that she didn't feel the need to pay it since "Obama is gonna be President".

Its lazy and shitty rhetoric. I have absolutely zero time for it.

People in the know aren't looking at him like a messiah, rather a refreshing change from the dimwitted shit we've all tolerated for 8 years.

I'm sure he'll be quite a different person and President than Mr. Bush. I certainly hope so.

What I mean by "messiah" isn't in a religious sense, though. I mean how people are convinced he will bring real and meaningful change to American politics. I just don't think it's possible.

He may try to stir things up, but the political machine in this country is so firmly entrenched I'd be willing to bet almost anything that it won't be too long into his term that people begin seeing it's business as usual in Washington.

I'm not being pessimistic, just honest.

Probably one of the biggest effects of his presidency will be his background. Just being considered black will be huge. If there is such a thing as "the American psyche" he'll affect it in a big way over the next 4 years.

Politically speaking - he's got to work with Congress and a million special interest groups like anyone else.

But it's going to be different than W. That's for sure.

There is no reason to have a separation of chruch and state, that's just a left wing thing to try to make everyone hate God and outlaw it completely for their secular based society.

The only rule is that government can't make a law about a particular religion, not that it can't participate in it.

I think it went down like this: first Obama stepped on Chief Justice Roberts' first line which apparently flustered him. Then Roberts got the second line wrong, Obama noticed and said the line up to where Roberts screwed up hoping Roberts would realize and say the line again correctly. Roberts sputtered out the wrong line again, Obama just went with it, one thing led to another, a black man became President of the United States.

Obama halts all regulations pending review (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28758810/)

One of President Barack Obama's first acts as president was to order federal agencies to halt all pending regulations until his administration can review them.

The order went out Tuesday afternoon, shortly after Obama was inaugurated president, in a memorandum signed by new White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. The notice of the action was contained in the first press release sent out by Obama's White House, and it came from deputy press secretary Bill Burton.

The waning days of former President Bush's administration featured much debate over what rules and regulations he would seek to enact before he left office.

All of those "last minute" executive orders by Bush just might not happen after all. This fucker is moving into the house to work.

Seriously, I dont have anything against Obama, but I mean the media and all the entertainers that backed this guy are making his first day as president look like a joke. there are Ten official Inaugural Balls being held tonight.
the Neighborhood Ball is the televised ball with all of the various performing artists and hollywood talent.
the Obamas will attend all ten tonight... the with some of the others being either more low-key or traditional.

This was the first time I watched an Inauguration overseas. It seemed that all the various channels had the same video feed (Al-Jazeera, BBC, SkyNews, CNN Int'l, the Italian/German/French channels) but with their own audio. I wacthed up until Obama took the oath (eventually) and then I retired to the bar for a Romeo y Julieta and a frosty beer.

They were supposed to take down the pictures of Bush, Cheney and Rice at the embassy entrance and replace them with Obama, Biden and Clinton. The old ones were still there this morning. SLACKERS.

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the presidential oath of office to Barack Obama for a second time Wednesday just to be on the safe side.

The unusual step came after Roberts flubbed the 35-word constitutionally prescribed oath a bit on Tuesday, causing Obama to repeat the wording differently than as prescribed in the Constitution.

White House counsel Greg Craig said Obama took the oath from Roberts again out of an "abundance of caution."

On the Guantanamo cases, military judges have agreed to suspend six trials. They include proceedings against five men accused of plotting the 11 September attacks.

The judge halted their trial despite the fact that four of the five - including alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed - opposed the proposed suspension during a court hearing on Wednesday.

Earlier, the judge in the separate trial of Omar Khadr - a Canadian man accused of killing an American soldier in Afghanistan in 2002 - also agreed to suspend the case.

Pausing the cases, probably so the Obama administration can review the cases, decide which ones are still worth going through on and deciding what they will do with these guys in the meantime as they close Gitmo. Some will be moved here and prosecuted. Others are going to be moved to other countries. Some countries have offered to take some of these prisoners as long as Gitmo is closed.

Syd
01-21-2009, 04:17 PM
It's mainly about finding where they can send these guys (remember, for about 7 years these people were labeled as terrorists, whether accurate or not and because of that no country wants to touch any of these guys with a 10' pole) also whether or not any of these people can face justice: due to the torture it's relatively questionable whether you can prosecute anyone due to how tainted everything is.

Friendly reminder that Guantanamo had less to do with safety and more to do with the apparent sadistic pleasure the executive branch in having a torture program.

I most certainly am. I'm for a fair trial of the prisoners. I'm against torture. I'm against being held without cause.

It's hard for me to believe, however, that the men who are charged with being part of the September 11 attacks are being held without cause.
