I'm sure Sirius licenses the Ron and Fez show to Audible and takes a cut of all the Audible sales and subscriptions. Sirius knows people are going to download the show one way or another, so they're wise to provide an easy way for people to pay to legally do it.

Or something.

I used to mess around trying to record the show online or off the radio and wasted a lot of time. Sometimes Audible can be a hassle but I can't hear the show at 12:00-3:00 am or pm and O&A are not for me so I have no need for an xm subscription. I have Sirius for NASCAR so Mel get paid.

I would rather just pay for the show like a gentleman and this is a great way to do it.

I just downloaded the May 1st show. No problem. Putting it on the I pod and ready to laugh my ass off while I mow the lawn and pull weeds.

I have an XM sub. But I also know of alternate ways to get the show. I rarely listen live and sometimes the show doesn't record if I'm getting a bad signal or forget to schedule. When that happens, I take another route to getting the show.

I have thought about the ethical implications of it. While I don't have a problem getting an MP3 version of the show because I feel like I've paid for it already, I'm sure the place I go is full of people who haven't subscribed and just want a free show, so I kinda feel bad for supporting that place.

I'm pretty sure it isn't audibles fault. In the past it has been revealed that someone at the show forgot to send it over to Audible - or there is some sort of technical issue at XM/Sirius and the show is held up until the issue is resolved.

Does anyone else find the image associated with the Ron and Fez Audible download rather outdated? I know that on my iPod Touch it looks out of focus on the larger screen. Call me crazy but after I download each new show I overwrite the cover art with this jpg courtesy of Mooch.

Also, after reading FezFez's post about the way the show is delivered to Audible.com I am going to start to email them more often when the show isn't up the same day. I had assumed the problem was related to the "awesome" equipment in the new Sirius studio.

If you do a "Get Info" in the right place in iTunes you can paste a picture previously copied onto your clipboard into the "Artwork" field. From my Podcasts directory in iTunes I right click on the Ron & Fez heading (not an individual day's show as that doesn't work the same for some reason) and click on "Get Info". It asks me if I want to view multiple objects at once, I say yes, then I right click and pastes the image on my clip board into the "Artwork" field and click OK or Apply. It will then update the image on all the already downloaded shows. I have to do this pretty much each day however. I've gotten it down to where it only takes me a few seconds though. Hope this helps.

Anyone know why the Audible show was only 3 hours today? It ended with Ron going to commercial break (not satellite of love) after them discussing the pronunciation of "Shari". Ron was saying that he wanted to make sure he pronounces it right for when "Shari" gets there. Maybe there was a guest on in the last hour that wasn't sent to Audible?

The way I understand it, from an audible's employee is this. Audibles end is completely automated meaning once they receive the show it's automatically uploaded and available for download. So when a show is not available right away it's because someone didn't send the file to audible in a timely fashion.

I believe it was Travis (OnA) who stated that if someone uses the computer while the file is being transfered it will cause the transfer to stop.

I couldn't live without it. I don't have the time to listen to the show during the day, so I have to rely on the audible download. It does suck every month or so something like this will happen where the show isn't long enough. Also, sometimes the shows don't show up until the next day, sometime days later if it is a weekend. But for the thirty or so dollars for a year, it is totally worth it. Having a backlog of every show is nice. When you catch up, you can always go back and listen to a random old show.
You can never have too much Ron and Fez!

A little update on the audible situation from an employee. Mostly refers to OnA but you get the idea.

Dead Horse Time: After Francine blew the field ******, we were asked to archive that show and never let it see the light of day ever ever again (except for those that already had it in their library). Then, after we were sent the Homeless Charlie show, we were asked to do the same with that episode. Then, after their suspension for the Homeless Charlie incident, we were not allowed to use an archived show before said suspension, and we had to stop selling the individual pre-suspension shows altogether. After their suspension, we have (at times) received "light" shows. Some were completely innocent editing mistakes by Travis and company (i.e. the Ann Coulter interview). Other times, Travis and company were told to have certain breaks / portions removed before being sent to us (i.e. the Jimmy management rant). And when the boys are off, we are not sent a worst-of show. We are sent an email (that day, or in advance if it was a scheduled vacation), notifying us that there will not be a show sent that day (or that week). The audio department then chooses a past show to encode and throw up for that day, which absolutely blows for a yearly subscriber, but I am not sure what you want them to do. The person who chooses an archive show does not give a fuck how recent it is: as long as it is post-suspension, his job his done.

And follow up

To be completely fair, there have been times where the show is late because it is stuck in our encoding queue behind some heavy audio, and we do not get it on the site right when it is sent to us. But I can't reiterate enough that we encode and put up EVERYTHING that is sent to us from Sirius/XM for that day. After that, it is only modified / re-encoded / removed if the Sirius/XM lawyers get involved and request it.

My theory is that the secret has finally come out over vacation and the bit is up. This is Ron's way of precluding what they will talk about on Monday. (although you could almost pick any show from the last 3 months and you would have heard secret talk)

I know it's probably been discussed already, but I really liked some of these Best of shows this week. Really good production in Friday's show especially. I like the shows that take a bit from beginning to end using different segments from the shows leading up to that. I read Fez's post on Audible not wanting best of's sent in, but I think there should be some exceptions when there are show's like Friday's.

I appreciate Fez taking time away from his vacation to address some of the posters in this thread and explaining some of the inner workings. And the Best of shows that ran this week were good, and you can definatly tell there was some thought put into them.

My only request would be that in the future when there is a culmination show of a bit that was so good, try to get that in Audible rotation. Fridays show was a classic and it showcased talent and dedication from the whole show.

Just this very week my Inno ate it, and rather than replace it, as I ONLY listen to R&F on XM/Sirius now, I just signed up for Audible and subscribed to the boys...only to have a missing episode two days later...

Those of you long term Audible subscribers...how typical is this sort of thing?

Typically, once every month or two they are late with an episode.

If there's a problem, most of the time it's because the producers / interns of the show did not upload it. It's usually not on Audible's end.

There were a lot of problems during Earl Douglas's tenure. Things have been running much better with Chris Tanley.

With Earl, it was a lot later in the evening when the shows would be available, or often the next day.

With whomever is doing it now (I'm just assuming Chris Tanley) there's been a few times this year that the show was available within 2 hours, which means I get it for the commute home. But I'd say 98% of the time it at least up the same afternoon before he/she leaves the studio.

It takes time to cut up the audio and sometimes shit happens in the afternoons. Yesterday was a crazy day from what I've read.

They'll get it uploaded eventually.

Yup. Usually I'll either have a backlog of shows to listen to or won't listen until night or the next day if I don't hear it live. I can only remember once or twice a show I really wanted to listen to right away wasn't up.

I'm very happy with the service.
http://audible.custhelp.com/rnt/rnl/img/Message.gif?p_db_name=audible Courtney J.: Unfortunately, we no longer offer a subscription to Ron & Fez.

The hell? I still see the 1 and 12 month subs available. That's a major mistake on her part. And even if it was discontinued, I'd assume they'd have to honor the subscriptions somehow.

OK, I just went all in and canceled my XM subscription and will only have Audible to rely upon to hear the buddays...which makes me wonder...does anyone have any sort of guess at the deal XM has with Audible? To what extent has my single cancellation added to the marginal liklihood of XM folding and R&F being out of a job? Not fer nuthing, just pondering how much money XM makes off a sub vs the cut they get from an annual subscription from Audible?

I wondered the same thing. Seems like it would be easy enough for XM to just setup a download site for all of their shows instead of taking a cut from Audible.

I'll have to listen and see, because according to the posted synopsis;

The guys are off today so we present this archival show:

Today we talk about the Church's stance on torture. Dave gives us an NBA update. Ron & Fez talk about the swine flu. We talk about Sean Penn's divorce. Ron & Fez talk about the growing number of people wanting to be cremated over being buried. We do a round of Character Doorbell. We talk about Dave's child's first birthday party. We get another round of Character Doorbell. Ron & Fez answer some listener emails. Fez can't find sloppy joes in restaurants. Darryl Strawberry stops by to talk about his new book. [Original Broadcast Date: May 1, 2009]

And then Tuesday say's March 09, and Wednesday says Feb 09.

But if they messed up and put in a two year old show, I am on it like white on something really white.

Twice I've had to have them reset my account even though I never used another computer or reinstalled the OS and I never changed mp3 players.

They said "It happens from time to time" which I guess is a valid answer.

But of course I can buy all the music I want from itunes and use it on 100 different devices (if I owned that many). And I damned well should be able to do that. I don't like asking to use things I already own. It's the same with some of the game downloading that is available. Install it more than 3 times and you have to ask permission to install it again. Fuck that, once I pay for it, I don't want tot have to ask to use it.

I was living in Germany for about 8.5 months so I bought the Audible subscription which I think is great and cheap for a year subscription. I was using a wireless network connection from a neighbor so I couldn't count on XM online staying connected for 3 or 4 hours for me to record it so I got the Audible show.

One thing I don't like is that if they play a 'Best of' that show will not be on the audible show. I don't think that is Audible's fault. I guess someone on the staff picks an old show usually something within the last 6 months.

If I want to hear the 'Best of' I usually go to the Bay  and wait for the doctor to show up.

So what you are saying is that you have never had an issue with Audible's DRM and instead have had some kind of mystery account problems that were caused by you making absolutely no changes to anything and then their support resolved everything that was wrong. You then go on to compare the dreadful Audible DRM to iTunes, which is one of the most closed systems on the planet that completely restricts you to Apple products if you want to portably use any of the music you buy unless you specifically purchase (for a higher price) DRM free tracks.

Yeah, but we don't get the same "best of" segments that air from 11 - 3 on the day(s) they are out. Like this summer when they aired best-of breaks from WNEW, etc.

What gets uploaded to audible is an entire archived show, usually no older than 6 months or so... and always a xm (or sirius/xm) show. Never any segments from WNEW or WJFK.

If you download the Audible Manager software, you should be able to import the files to Audible Manager, then transfer to your MP3 player. I know it works for Zune, so I'd assume it would work for yours.

If the show had as many producers as it should, I'm sure it wouldn't happen as often.

They're not just sending un-cut audio... it takes a little time.

As long as they're operating short-handed like this, I'm willing to be patient and cut Tanley and Dave "one ounce of slack".

Especially if one of them was out that day, or I know that the guys are taking them out after the show, like on a Friday. I've got enough from the library to hold me over until Monday, or whenever it's available.

Hell, I'm just now listening to last Wednesday's show.

All true but, there is a certain amount of unfairness to it.
We pay a subscription fee. We are paying for these episodes.
I can't sit at my computer and listen, so subscribing to Sirius/XM is not a realistic option for me.
If you subscribe to a The Daily News, it comes every day. The same should hold true for an Audible subsciption.

And then there's the simple fact that I hate to fall behind on the show. I like the continuity of listening at a show a day. (commute... gym...)
I depend on it.

My point is that the majority of the time, the problem is not with Audible, with whom you subscribe.

It's like complaining to DirecTV because there wasn't a new episode of The Jersey Shore one week.

If you really feel like lodging a complaint, it should be with Sirius/XM.

But if anyone does, I was jussayin that we should do it in a way that helps the show, and in no way trashes the job Tanley is doing.

Maybe they need to be reminded just how many of us have Audible subscriptions just to hear the R&F show everyday, and stress to them that they should use their take to let the boys hire another full time producer.

I'm a happy subscriber, but I can't imagine that there are enough of us signed up for the service that Sirius would care about the problem.

I'm not disappointed in the occasional to frequent late episodes, I am disappointed that they won't arrange to have Audible post their best-ofs, night or weekend shows when Ron and Fez are away. I have been subscribed to Ron and Fez through Audible since their first day (the week O&A were suspended).

If they cared that much about the Audible show, they would promote it more. They would want to let us know that on a certain holiday we would get an Episode (or a few episodes) of RBI or a show they recorded at night or their year-end discussion shows.

I remember Opie and Anthony mentioning that they were not getting extra compensation for the Audible show, so it is a possibility that the same goes for Ron and Fez. Why would they make it a priority?

I guarantee that Audible pays Sirius/XM for the right to re-sell their programs.

Does any of it go into Tanley's pocket? I have no idea.

But that was my point. Obviously (from reading this thread) there are people that are unhappy with the service, to the point of seeking alternate methods to obtain the show each day.

It's in Audible's and Sirius/XM's interests to keep the subscribers happy.

I just wouldn't want any complaints to seem as though Tanley is not doing his job.

But to your point about making whatever airs on 202 that day available to the Audible subcribers...

...I've always wondered why the onus is on one of the R&F producers to cut/edit the show, and upload it to Audible... especially if they're not earning any more for doing so.

I don't understand why Audible isn't recording the show themselves, editing out the commercials, and re-airing whatever played on 202 from 11 - 3 that day.

The only thing I can think is that someone at XM wants for them to be able to review/edit the content before it's made available?

I want every episode of the show. Period.
I really don't see why that would be so hard, if I'm willing to pay for it. (and I am completely willing)

If I were stealing the show, or depending on a budday to provide me with MP3's, ... okay... I will have to accept the fact that I can't have it all.
But that isn't the case. I am a subscriber and I pay the full rate. I see no reason why that doesn't entitle me to every episode. ESPECIALLY the live-events and Best Of 00's and holiday episodes. Those episodes are, by definition, special events and I feel they should be made available to a paying customer.

It isn't "more work" for Chris. It's just "work". Editing & uploading the Audible has now become part of his job.

I understand your frustration, and everything that you are saying.

But I also understand that they had this same work load when they had Earl, and they weren't allowed to replace him.

So now, instead of 3 producers, they have 2, and one of those is constantly in the studio.

I've managed small shops myself, and when you have a small staff, having just one person out for the day can sometimes mean that things don't get done that day because there's no one to take over when they're out.

They need another producer already. Period.

Imjussayin that by venting our frustration about this directly to Sirius/XM, maybe it will help push them to finally do the right thing.

I disagree. It would be like Directv promising us a new Jersey Shore episode once a week then not having the show at all or showing it a week late. My beef would be with whom I made the arrangement with, Directv, not MTV.

The problem is Audible does nothing to make sure the shows are sent in consistently. The shows don't care about Audible, and Sirius would prefer that we just subscribe through them (Audible was a deal made with XM I believe).

Audible has shown time and again they aren't going to change, so we pretty much have to accept it or cancel.

What can Audible really do to "make sure the shows are sent in consistently"? Other than to maybe threaten Sirius that they will stop carrying the show if it's not corrected? Or maybe withhold payment, or penalize them for uploading late?

I'm not pretending to have any of the answers, but I'm pretty sure that Audible realizes that it's in their intere$t to keep us happy... and almost every time the show is late we find out it's because they didn't receive it on time.

You can complain to whichever you want, but only Sirius can help avoid future delays by getting the guys some help. I was just suggesting that maybe we can help Audible convince Sirius of why this is important, and also let them know that the show deserves to be able to replace Earl.

I guess I just get a little defensive when it seems that people are blaming the problem solely on Tanley not "doing his job" every day.

We are on the same page. As far as what can Audible do to make sure shows are sent on time, I have no idea, but Audible should have an idea. I have been with audible a long time, long before the shows hooked up with them. Their CS has always been really suspect. I'm not convinced their CS does everything they can to keep us happy. For now, I am just going to live with it, because like you, I'm not going to blame Tanley or ESD. I'm up for canceling service with Audible if others are on board and you think it will help get another staffer.

It sucks because over at the bag we went through this same thing with O&A. There were alot of us who did what you are suggesting with no change. There was even a guy who worked for Audible who posted there giving us the inside scoop. He would always say it was Travis' fault, and Travis would get mad and say it was Audible's fault.
