Ok...more teams means more chances I will give you that. But we have had 3 teams I can think of that have consistency in their production for the last 25 years. Meaning for every one year they are shitty they have 2-3 with a good productive/playoff bound season at least.

The Giants, the Yanks and the Devils.
Mets? No
Rangers? Back in the late 80's to late 90's yes. Very feared team on the ice. But now? no.
Knicks? Made it to the big game once, back when OJ was making his big escape that was about it.
Nets....maybe two good seasons. Other then that...move that team.
(I don't care about basketball or know how the teams are doing this year)

NYC doesn't have any real football teams according to your logic, and NJ doesn't have any major league baseball teams.
So they root for the teams across the river. No big deal.
