just went through all of the seasons for my first viewing...started NetFlix and couldn't get them fast enough, so I would get two from Blockbuster and two from NetFlix...very good show and very addicting...

The thing of this show is that not only does it hold up well to repeated viewings, repeated viewings are pretty much required. The first time you see it, you're mostly trying to keep all the characters straight and juggle the plotlines. It's on repeated viewings, after you know who's who, that you really start to see the larger picture, and the richness and depth of this show.

I mean, I just finished the first season again, and it was just stunning. And it only gets better from there.

I watched the first time via rentals...I think I may ask for a season or two for Christmas...

I found the repeated viewing of Band of Brothers to be as you described...each time revealed something I could not entirely grasp the first time while learning all of the characters and plot lines...

I'm writing up a schedule with 20 minute blocks devoted to things like The Wire, Jersey Shore, the Real World, etc. (with a 10 minute block devoted to Bands on the Run) so we can time it out just right. If we stick to the schedule there will be more than enough time to mock.

This is something I didn't know until a few days ago: the character of The Deacon, the old church guy who counsels Bunny Colvin and Cutty, is played by Melvin Williams.

In the '70s, Melvin Williams was, basically, the drug kingpin of West Balitmore. The real life Avon Barksdale. He was brought down by an investigation led by a cop named Ed Burns, which made extensive use of wiretaps. His arrest and trial was covered by a young reporter for the Baltimore Sun named David Simon.

This does raise the question: what bar in The Wire woudl you most want to visit? Orlando's?
The bar all the stevedores drink at in Season 2? Kavanaugh's? Or the bar where Brother Mouzone's henchman spots (unbeknownst to him) Deputy Commissioner Rawls?

I'd love to attend a policeman's wake at Kavanaugh's, myself. Fucking love the Pogues.

i just restarted it over again. This time im gonna focus more on the characters, and so far i realized something in season 1 i didnt realize. Carver is a giant pussy. I knew they were dumb fuck ups and he was scared of his bosses, but i mean in general. He is just a fuckin pussy when he is out on the streets.

And also, the scene where carv, prez and herk go into the towers at 230 am. There is something that always really annoyed me, though not about the show, i think the show did it on purpose.

After they fuck with the people, and then prez hits the kid and throws him away from the car. They are about to get in the car, and then people start throwing shit at them. WHY NOT GET IN THE CAR AND DRIVE AWAY. Call it in as you are driving and have cops just run the place. BUT YOU WERE NEXT TO THE FUCKIN CAR, MORONS. JUST GET IN IT AND DRIVE AWAY

Again, i think they did it to make the 3 look like complete morons. I dont think the writers just fucked up. BUT WHAT THE FUCK, DRIVE AWAY

I think that's a major theme of the show, which is there from the start but really gets hammered home from the 3rd season on: police departments have become so focused on "stats" and making quick, easy arrests that there aren't many "natural po-lice" left anymore. They don't know how to do good, long-term investigations or even, as this scene showed, deal with situations diplomatically rather than brutally.

Nope. Keema's gun slides under the seat, and Dozerman drops his gun before he can return fire (which causes massive problems for Bunk, as you'll remember).

Beyond that, they're never really in situations that woudl require them to fire a gun. The show mostly deals with investigators, or cops rolling hoppers who probably aren't armed or who know to just get up against the wall.

And he probably doesnt check call history, he prob just fuckin dialed the number

It's always fun when you start over to see characters you've gotten used to thinking of in a certain way being shown in different lights. In particular, seeing Lester Fremon being thought of as just some hump from the Pawn Shop Unit sitting in the corner making doll furniture after you've seen him in the last few seasons pretty much running the Major Crimes Unit on his own. Or Prez as a total goofball shooting the hell out of the wall.

I did find a nice bit of symmetry in the show. In the first time we actually really get to know Levy (not counting his first appearance as D'Angelo's lawyer), he complains about having to be called out of his house on Friday night because "Nadine is making brisket.' In the final time we see Levy, he's inviting Herc to his house for dinner, and tells him "Nadine is making brisket." What other show would think to go back that far to connect something like that together?

Servo

While you're watching, see if you can figure out why Bodie doesn't seem to notice they swapped his pre-paid with another one.

I can think of two possibilities for this -

1. The burner that they returned to Bodie had no minutes left on it, so Bodie wouldn't have been able to make a call anyway, and then never would have learned that the programmed numbers were different.

2. The burner they give him had already belonged to a Barksdale crew member before it was tossed (which the detail wouldn't have known), so the programmed numbers would have been the same.

Yeah, the phones are given to the Barksdale crew pre-programmed, and they are only allowed to call those numbers pre-programmed into them. So Bodie probably wouldn't have thought to check the call history.

This show remembers a rule that other cop shows often forget: criminals -- and often, the cops too -- are usually pretty dumb.

I just found out about when they switch bodie's phone. When they decide to do it, they go back and take a phone out of a box of phones they had that used to belong to a barksdale crew member.

they switched that with bodie's phone. The numbers are preprogrammed but they wouldnt know what numbers are what. it prob just has a name. when he went to use it he prob figured he just ran outta minutes and tossed it and used someone else's, never noticing the numbers in the phone were old cause he wouldnt know them anyway

i still love this orlando shit. HE WHOOPED YOUR ASS FOR EVEN TALKIN DRUGS. WHY WOULD YOU GO TO HIM TO BUY WEIGHT YOU DUMB MOTHERFUCKER?

The best explanation I can come up with is that Orlando thinks there are people in Barksdale's crew willing to step out. Remember that D'Angelo seemed kind of interested in working with him when Orlando brought it up, so Orlando thinks someone else -- someone not happy with how Avon's paying them -- might be interested too.

yea but D still ran it by avon. they dont know much, but all of them work Avon's shit. Which means there "market" that they have to get rid of orlando's shit is Avon's. They would ALL run it by Avon. and he is Avon. Even if they dont tell him, someone else will know and Avon will find out. The thing thats the funniest is that the cops never thought of this either

Speaking of D'Angelo, anyone catch Larry Gilliard Jr. this week on Friday Night Lights? He played (big shocker) an ex-gangster who does community work now named Eldin Crumpler.

I had never heard of this documentary, but I just did some looking into it & if anyone has the Sundance Channel (DirecTV Channel 549) it will be playing on Tuesdays in February. Only episodes 1-4 are currently listed, but presumably it will conclude on Tuesday March 2nd with episode 5.

It's based on another book by David Simon, the co-creator of The Wire.

I highly recommend reading both that book and "Homicide: A Year On The Killing Streets", which is about a year Simon spent basically hanging out with the Baltimore Police Department's Homicide Unit, which came to be the basis of the TV series "Homicide: Life on the Streets". There's a lot taken straight out of that book -- the Snot Boogie story that kicks off the whole damn thing is from there.

I mean, just listen to that Snot Boogie story, and think about it, and you've almost got the show's entire worldview and what's going to happen right then and there, in the first 3 minutes of the whole thing. "You got to man, it's America" could be the motto of the show. Why do we keep getting our asses kicked playing this pointless game? You got to, man, it's America.

BALTIMORE (AP) - Police in Baltimore say an actress who appeared on the HBO series "The Wire" was among dozens of people arrested in an early morning drug raid.

Police say Felicia "Snoop" Pearson, who played a killer of the same name on the hit television series, is among about 30 people who were arrested. Police declined to say what charges she faces.

Drug Enforcement Administration agents, Baltimore police and others carried out the raids Thursday in the city.

Pearson was convicted of second-degree murder as a teenager. In 2008, she was arrested on a minor drug charge when police went to her home to pick her up for refusing to cooperate as a witness in a murder trial. Court records show she was found not guilty on the charge.

Why does Ron seem so anti-Wire lately? Everyone telling him to watch it seems to have put a bad taste in his mouth... wouldn't it indicate to him that it might be worth watching? It is a huge commitment, although watch an episode or two and you'll WANT to commit time to it. It's just hard for me to take Ron seriously when he talks about great television drama when he's never seen The Wire or Mad Men.

Loved the show from the first season and couldn't wait for each consecutive one to start. Although I was pissed that it ended, I also didn;t want to see it go on if they couldn't keep it up the right way. They probably could have gone on forever, though, the way it was. But five seasons of TV gold is hard to argue with.

The show really was focused around a different part of the city each season: season 1 was the cops and the gangs; season 2 was the docks, and the working man in general; season 3 was the government and big business; season 4 was the schools; season 5 was the media. I think Simon covered pretty much any institution he wanted to cover.

Besides, the quality was showing signs of declining. Season 5 isn't nearly as bad as some say, but the whole plotline about McNulty faking a serial killer was just ridiculous, and I found the whole plotline around the Balitmore Sun uninteresting as well -- it did seem like Simon taking the chance to settle a few scores from the time he worked there. I think it went out at the right time.

If you mean the opening title sequence, it's the same basic premise each season: a montage of clips related to the major plot lines of that season, set to a version of the song "Down In the Hole." (Season 2 actually uses the Tom Waits original.) I always thought it was OK, and set the mood well, but it's not one of the better opening sequences out there. (And the version of "Down in the Hole" by Steve Earle they use in Season 5 is terrible.)

The resurrection of this thread has inspired me to start watching the whole series again.

The very first scene of the very first episode , the tale of Snot Boogie, is pretty much the entire series, all it will ever do and everything it's tried to say, in one 2 minute scene. It ends with pretty much the motto of the show:

"You got to. It's America, man."

Ok, we have Cablevision. Mostly I use the apple tv for Netflix; for that it's great. Occasionally well play other shit, but that's mostly it. They recently added Hulu plus which used to be a bitch when I had it, now it would be a breeze. I'd say look at where the content you use is coming from and which service is more compatible. We're gonna cut our cable for our 2nd tv and just get another apple tv box.
