pitched their last games for the Yankees. Hoping to make their bullpen
younger, the Yankees could release or trade both on Thursday. 

Quantrill and Stanton shook hands and exchanged hugs with teammates
and club personnel after Wednesday night's rainout at Camden Yards.
Quantrill would not comment after leaving the clubhouse, and Stanton
said, "You can read between the lines."
Manager Joe Torre, who
kept the clubhouse closed to reporters for about 15 minutes after the
game was called, said he had spoken with General Manager Brian Cashman
about reducing the Yankees' pitching staff to 11 from 12.
"We're going to have to talk through it and figure out what we'll do before Friday," Torre said. 
On
Wednesday, the Yankees promoted the right-hander Jason Anderson from
Class AAA Columbus and sent down outfielder Kevin Reese. The move gave
the team 12 pitchers, and it was necessary for two reasons: Wednesday's
scheduled starter, Mike Mussina, was ill, and the setup man Tom Gordon
was unavailable after working two innings Tuesday.
Torre said he
wanted to return to 11 pitchers and was eager to promote a backup
infielder, Felix Escalona, for Friday's game in Detroit. When asked
before the game if the presence of Anderson and another recently
promoted reliever, Scott Proctor, could affect the roster spots of
veteran relievers, Cashman said, "That's always an option that we have."
It
was not immediately known which player besides Escalona would join the
Yankees' roster, but Colter Bean has been dominant at Columbus, with 47
strikeouts in 39 innings. Bean, a right-hander, pitched two innings for
the Yankees in April.

and home runs last year than Tony Womack has had in his whole career.
When he's half the player Jackie Robinson or Sheffield is, then lets
talk. Tony Womack is a journeyman who's lucky to still be in the bigs.
Sheff's one of the top hitters in Baseball. 
 About his defense, he has BY FAR the best throwing arm on
the team. But he's never been the best fielder. Plus the Yanks keep
alot of injury stuff quiet, and Shef plays hurt alot. Could be that. And
if Shefs bat slowed down just a bit, he might hit 50 HRs. He hit the
most upper deck (just) foul balls I've ever seen.  Gary
Sheffields ony problem is lack of diplomacy. He tells you exactly whats
on his mind. Its what some people like about him, and other people hate
about him. I think there's plenty of bullshit around, and I like that
he's a straight shooter. And none of this is new. If you saw him on
Centerstage, he said last year he was considering retiring and would
only play for the Yankees. Now OMAR brings up his name in a trade, and
people act surprised. The Media must love him. Great copy for a slow
news day.

It baffles me that the Yankees seem so anxious to get rid of Sheffield. This makes no sense, at all... I'm gonna lose my mind thinking about it. They need an outfielder (center), so they're looking to get one... by trading away an outfielder? First off, Sheffield easily has the best arm in our outfield. Secondly, the guy is hitting over .300 with 55 RBIs, and gets most of his hits with runners in scoring position! With A-Rod and Matsui as hot as they've been, having the middle of the line-up be Sheffield, A-Rod, Matsui is the only thing that's been scoring us runs lately! How could they even THINK about getting rid of Sheff?! This is sheer insanity and I want to vomit.

Gary Sheffields ony problem is lack of diplomacy. He tells you exactly whats on his mind.No, his problem is that he didn't negotiate a no trade cluase in his contract so he created one himself.He
is of absolutely zero value to this team now if they need to rebuild.
They can't trade him for prospects now, and I don't want him anywhere
near younger players. I don't need a future outfield of half-assed
fielders who thinks its OK to purposely throw away balls when they are
unhappy, and have absolutely no tact with the press, letting out little
gems like "Yeah, I took steroids, I just didn't know I was, it's all
Barry Bonds fault!"The only way he's of value is if this team
stays in contention, so he better make sure he and everyone else picks
it up.

Cabrera. He's only 20 years old, already made AAA. He's still a long
way off, but if he pans out he's the CF of the future. Too bad next
year's probably too soon, it would be nice to bring him up

He's WAY too raw at this point. This is only his
third game at AAA. I'm actually not sure why he's up at Columbus yet.
He wasn't tearing up shit in AA. It would probably hurt him to bring him up now. Cabrera
is probably the only outfield prospect in the system with a shot at starting in
the majors. They're rebuilding the system, but it's still very bare at
that position. While they could call up some guys to be a CF and they'd
be a defensive upgrade, they'd be more of a disaster than Womack at the
plate.

I just read a thread on Nyyfans that he might be
called up to showcase him for a trade. Apparently a bunch of scouts
were there to see his first game.If they trade him for Kotsay I kill. I left that open-ended purposely.On
another note, you can tell that Steinbrenner doesn't pay much attention
to the Clippers. A bunch of players are wearing their uniforms really
baggy Manyy Ramirez-style. I don't think that stuff would fly in NY.And
on another more humorous note, somone suggested on that board that the
Yanks should trade Womack and/or Sanchez with cash to Texas to bring
back Soriano. They were serious. I don't want to start up last night's
gag again because I'm spent, but it's just hilarious.

Well, that poster wanted him to be in the
outfield. Apparently he hasn't had his fill of bad infielders trying to
convert to the outfield in mid-season. And he forgot how dead set
Soriano was against going to the outfield when he was here.Henn
seems to have had control problems when he in the majors, which I guess
was from nerves. Maybe he can overcome that and become decent in time.
But, then again, as I typed that he started throwing wild and just gave
up a leadoff single, so who knows.

Well its the 8th inning.  Any idea how many pithes he's thrown?  I have the sound off.Most worthless stat in baseball:  Win-loss record.  If one of these guys scores he'll get charged with a loss.  Leaving in the 8th giving up 1 run with a guy on doesnt deserve a loss.  Half the decisions givin to a pitcher arent deserved.  Give up 8 runs in 6 inning and leave winning 11-8, you get the win if the pen shuts down the oposition.  Stupid.

decline. Look at Johnson in 2003. Only 18 starts, 6-8 with an ERA of
4.28 giving up 16 HR.

This is not a season to be complaining about a win, but does every
other win have to be some big dramatic comeback? Can we get a 6-0 lead
and HOLD IT just once? Our starting pitching blows. Giambi looked good today. 2 dingers. Be nice if he can be 2/3 of the player he used to be.

You know what, I aint saying nothing I'm just saying, another HR for A-Rod in a 8+ run game.  It's unreal how meaningless his Homers are!  3 in that blowout game with 10 rbis2 in a game they led 12-0 and won by a huge margain against some other team1 Against TB in that 13 inning gameAnd one today.Thats 7 of 21 in huge blowouts, just off the top of my head.  I mean these arent 5 run games, theyre 8,9 10 run games.   I'd like to find a site that has all the results of the season easy for review.  Anybody know of one?And how about those pathetic O's?  I thought they were good this year.  They cant even beat a bad Yankee team.

3 in that blowout game with 10 rbisThat's
so misleading it's almost a lie and if you remember the game you know
it. He had all but two of the Yanks RBIs in that game. If he hadn't
drove in any
runs the Yanks would have lost that game. A-Rod and A-Rod alone made
that game a blow out. 4 of those RBIs, which would be almost half, came
on a Grand Slam at a critical point when the game was still very much
in doubt. And I believe that was his second HR of the game. If he had
only driven in 4 on 1 HR, would that
have been more acceptable?

Thank you H-Box. I dont need to add anything to that.We are
now tied w/the O's in the loss collumn, whose pitching staff is coming
back down to earth. And I've never seen so much bad fielding in
my life. The Bosox bullpen is exploding. And we're
just starting to play better. We just have to get to the all star
break, and then we should have our starters back. So should the Bosox
have Schilling by then, and they're not going anywhere. Too much
hitting. But then again, we can hit too.Should be interesting. 
I never thought I'd see Giambi hit 3 HR's in two games again.
And what a load that must be off the teams back. He and Brown have been
the two biggest anchors."I don't think he knew, after being away for a year, what it was going
to be like when he got back," Torre said. "Now he's getting that
inner-conceit thing, where you go up there and challenge people to get
you out." 
 I have to knock Torre on
this. He was trying to get Giambi to go the other way, and Giambi says
he was screwed up all thru the beginning of the season. He went back to
his old way of swinging, and his #'s have improved ever since. Torre
did the same thing w/Clemens when he showed up. Told him "You dont need
to throw at hitters, you're better than that." Went on to a mediocre
14-10 4.60 in his 1st year w/Yanks. Joe, stop telling all stars to
change how they became all stars in the 1st place.

Looking at the context, however, you can see he's not just piling on.C'mon.  I'm not an A-Rod hater, I just hate that he never has a big game unles 5 other Yankees do too.  You can take the majority of his HRs from this season away and not have it effect the games outcome.  We win 12-3 and take away his..2 HRs and 3 rbis or whatever, and we still win by 6.  All I hate is the fact that 21 HRs is impresive and on the surface that sounds great, but I factor in that only a few made any sort of difference.  I should have broke down who they were all againt.  Only 1 Vs Boston and a ton against TB, I know that much

It's not his fault though. Most times he has a
great game, and then everyone piles on after him. You say he's not
making a difference, well he is, and then the rest of the lineup makes
it not mean anything.If you hold everyone in the lineup to this
standard, I'd say the only yankee this season to really make a
difference just by himself would be Tino during his hot streak. Other
than that, everyone has either been hot or cold at the same time.That
being said, he's not worth it until he comes though in October. But you
can't deny his effect this season. Without him, this would be a sorry
team.

I'm interested to hear everyones MVP choices up to this point.  I'll take Matsui followed by Sheff, and Wang for a pitcher.  Huge overachiever and hasnt been worse then any other starter since hes been here

The
Trenton Thunder, the Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have
announced that Melky Cabrera, who began the 2005 season with the
Thunder, has been promoted to the New York Yankees and is scheduled to
start tonight against Cleveland.

 

Cabrera was the Opening Day centerfielder in Trenton where he batted .267 with 9 HR and 44 RBI in 75 games.  He
holds a share of the longest hitting streak for the Thunder this
season- nine games. While with the Thunder, the 20-year-old was named
to the XM Satellite Radio All-Star "Futures Game" on Sunday, July 10th
at Comerica Park in Detroit, MI.  

 

On June 28, Cabrera was promoted to AAA Columbus where he batted .324 with 3 HR and 11 RBI in 9 games.  

 

Cabrera is in his 4th professional season since being signed as a non-drafted free agent (11/13/01) by the Yankees.
 
I
think they are pushing their luck here. I have a feeling he's gonna
fail miserably. He's too young.

Experiment? Even if I disagree with who they are
bringing up, at least they are trying something different in CF which
has been a constant disaster all season long. And they are giving one
of their most promising prospects a shot. It's a real outside shot, but
maybe he can pull a Cano and cement his spot on this team. In past days
guys like this would have been long gone before getting a shot like
this.I just hope they aren't bringing him up to showcase him for a trade.

How great did Melky look out there!!!I heard someone say on the FAN that he looked bigger in recent weeks.  Honestly, besides his spring training arrival last year, i havnt noticed him being smaller then 2002 or 2003After A-rod HR i wanted to come here and post that we'd win by more then 6, and at least 3 other Yankees wouldve Homered.  Giambi smacked one before I could and there were 3 HRs before there was 1 out in the 2nd.  But still I wouldve been wrong.  Another big time clutch HR for A-Rod.

He's very young so he's gonna naturally get bigger.Looked
a little overmatched at the plate, didn't look completely comfortable
like Cano did. However, he has a lightning quick swing. And I can
already tell he's gonna improve the CF defense. He will be able to
cover more ground and has a much better arm than Womack or Bernie,
however he's still learning so he's gonna make some ill-advised throws
like he did tonight.I'm not going to have high expectations for
him. If he can keep his average around .250 and provide good CF defense
then I'll be happy. If he's gonna put up Womack type numbers he'll be
little help and his time would be better spent in
AAA.

he tests positive, I want him off this team never to return. EVER.However,

Cabrera isn't set in stone as the everyday center fielder now. He could end up pulling a Henn and sucking balls. I don't think Bernie has started his last game in center field. And I know he's got plenty still to contribute with the bat. He went 4 for 5 a few nights ago and has been coming up with some huge clutch hits. He ain't done just yet. Also, I think it's very interesting that Bernie's major league debut was exactly 14 years ago TO THE DAY. That CAN'T be a coincidence.

The "14 years to the day" thing is a little creepy, but the Yanks do tend to have a flair for the dramatic, so I'm sure it was calculated & not coincidence.  And I'm sure it was one of their PR people who pointed out that little fact to a reporter.As for Bernie, I think that if Giambi figures out how to be an everyday player again, Reuben will be gone & Bernie will be an even better version of that all-important, switch-hitting, first guy off the bench in a clutch situation and part time DH.  The man can still hit, there's no reason to rush him into that sunset ride.  That's if & only if Mr. Boras will allow him to accept bench money & doesn't convince him he can get starter money to embarrass himself elsewhere & ruin what should be a comfortable end to a pretty special career.

He cant field the position he's been at for 14 years, but someones gonna think he can learn a new position, and give his old ass a big contract to do so?  I love the guy, but he's broken down, slow and not a steady bat.  He can get hot like anybody else, and hes clutch but hes better served as a Yankee DH and coming off the bench when needed then he would be doing anything else for any other team.

look at some of the dinosaurs patrolling RF on some of these teams all they are are hitters.  Plus as you said DH, trust me being a Yankee is one thing but if team X offers him more money and a chance to start in the OF, he will be long gone

Ruben ain't goin anywhere. He's done too much for the team as a DH and he gives the Yankees some good depth, since he can also play a decent outfield. I think Bernie will DH 8 times out of 10, but without Ruben, we really only have one DH.

Ruben's also been real good w/Cano, and is a good team guy. And Torre loves him. Next year? Sure, keep Bernie as DH/4th OF. But for this year keep Ruben around.  I'd LOVE to see Bernie retire as a Yankee, and have them give him a day.

I actually attended last year's Old Timer's Day... it turned out to be one of the best baseball experiences of my life. I had a great afternoon at the Stadium, despite the scorching sun beating down on me. Seeing all those greats on the field was awesome. It is really important to remember who made this team great in the past and see the guys who entertained generations before our's. I couldn't beleive it when Louis Sojo proved that he is STILL clutch, even in the Old Timer's game, when he hit a walk-off homerun to end the game. That was pretty hilarious actually. They gave out comemorative pins, and the Yankees also went on to win that game. Too often player's retire and disappear quietly, but the Yankees organization does a better job than any franchise at recognizing their past heros and keeping the old guys in "the family."

C'mon, man...it's a ridicuously broad and untrue statement to make.  The Cubs alone have kept dozens of players close to home over the decades, as coaches, as announcers, for appearances, WHATEVER.  You go to a day game at Wrigley, ANY game, and you're bound to see at least 3-4 former Cubs sitting in the front rows or a skybox.  And I'll bet this is true for plenty of the old school teams across the league, so let's not suddenly act like the Yankees are head and shoulders when it comes to respecting and involving the old players.

 And while I'm not fimiliar with what the Cubs do, I
do know George keeps lots of old Yanks in the family. Minor leagues,
coaches, scouts, special assistants. Fuckin Reggie gets paid to walk
around and try to motivate guys, whatever that means. So CH is right
about the Yanks, if the Cubs do as much (which I doubt, given its run
by the Tribune Co) then good for them. But I doubt it.

Melky hasn't been good in the field today.
Missed two balls, one he should have got and another he might have been
able to get. Sun was a factor in both. And he had another bad throw
following one of them, throwing the ball to nobody. Luckily the bad
throw didn't cost anything. Ruben Sierra had to come over and talk to
him a bit.And another bad throw as I type this. He REALLY
doesn't seem to know where he's supposed to throw the ball. If this
doesn't improve he can't be up here.

Actually sir, this is why YOU know nothing... There is something coming up called THE ALL STAR BREAK. As in, THREE DAYS REST. Yeah Mariano is in the all star game, but he will get AT MOST, one inning of work, if ANY. You apply your broad-based rules to everything without considering the specifics of the situation. You never pay attention to details.

homer, I wouldn't have had a problem with Rivera pitching the ninth IF
he wasn't on the All-Star team.However, seeing as him pitching
at the All-Star game is a very realistic possiblity, especially with
Francona managing (he'd love to use Rivera to win the game since it
means something, and also to tire him for the upcoming series), you
can't have him pitch the ninth. Gordon was available in an emergency.
You have to trust that the other guys can hold a 5 run lead. Otherwise,
we get the Gordon and Rivera of last October, tired beyond usefulness.If
this was a one time thing it would be fine. But Torre chronically
overworks this bullpen. I'd hate see the incredibly effective Rivera of
this season worn down to vulnerability by Torre.And Cabrera better be practicing his ass off in CF during the break.

They did the same to us earlier in the season, and we're among the tops
in the league in Runs Scored. So no, it doesn't surprise at all. They
have young, inconsistant pitchers. When they're on, they can dominate.
When they're not, they suck. BTW-Do we dare declare Giambi back to being the old Giambi? I cant believe the power surge, he's carrying the team.

I can't tell if you people are joking, but I really hope no one has actually been stricken with enough stupidity to genuinely believe Giambi is juicing again. There is regular testing in baseball for 'roids. Another guy just got busted the other day. Giambi is not Bonds. He admitted to doing 'roids. He can't possibly be enough of a scumbag to actually start doing them again, after all the adversity he's faced and health issues he's gone through. He sucked for a long long time after the whole steroid issue and is finally starting to show some signs of improvement, and automatically he's on steroids again? C'mon.

changed his swing more...he also looks skinner...less bloated.... so
whats our out look in the next half of the season...lets say giambi
stays hot...and tino returns to avarage.....make a few trades....the

If you dont think Giambi is juicing then fine, but dont bring up the "he couldnt possibly" angle.  The world in general and in sports is full of people who couldnt possibly be stupid enough to do it again, and they do.  He was a great hitter and now hes a bum, a loser bust that every Yankee fan hates.  They want him to go to the minors, they try to make him change his swing and he gets booed everytime he does anything in Yankee stadium besides walk.  On top of this, hes sensitive.  He's humiliated.  You dont think he'd go back and take Human Growth Hormone that apparently isnt banned and isnt tested for?  We dont know what his health issues are/were and what caused them.  All we know is he has had issues and he used roids.  Theres noway to know what he had or if roids caused it.  I think it was on a different board, but I read that plenty of docs/scientists believe men or 30 or 35 woiuld benefit health wise from a month long cycle of roids a year.  shit would break down and weaken like it does in the body startin around that age.  A lot less dangerous just about every other drug dished out like candy by doctors these days.  If Giambi believes the above like canseco does, we would view it as a "stupid" thing to do at all

This is why the vote should be taken away from the fans.  One hting I hate is douchebags making the team because they used to be good.  Some asshole retired and hes a ...10 time all star and in the meantime he was only the best at his position like 6 or 7 of those years.  Fuck Piazza and even fuck Giambi from last year.  Besides all that shit, you got tons of fuckers at every position.  For Christs sake, have 3 starters and a back up outfielder and maybe 2 extra infielders and have 4 starting pitchers and the top 2 or 3 closers, and leave it be.  Every Godamn position has someone new in each inning.

Podsednik. Torii Hunter was much more deserving than either of them. If we're going to go strictly by stats, Matsui deserved the
spot. But I say Jeter deserved it because of his stature in MLB. I know, Yankee bias, blah blah
blah, but those two were clearly the two most deserving.

Oh yah, this year it counts!  Who the fuck cares about the all-star game even now?  I hate the new WS tie-in, the new world format and the fact that you care if Jeter is there.  The fact is that Arod is a stat whore who can't lead a team anywhere, and fails in big spots.  If in fact the Yanks do something in the playoffs it sure as hell will be due to the leadership of other members on the team (and that huge fucking payroll).  The Yanks are one of a few teams that make huge mistakes year after year but can bury them with more acquistions.  These teams are ruining the sport as a whole.  Hell, almost every major free agent seems to be signed by the likes of Boston, NYY, and Baltimore.  It's no wonder the likes of Toronto and TB can't get up on their feet in the division.  They're making one hell of an effort and I applaud it, but a realist can see that it's one hell of an uphill battle.  The league as a whole sucks and has sucked for the last decade.  Thanks George, you have led the way!

Supposedly the Yankees traded a player to be named later for Chacon. It was reported in the Denver Post this morning and 1050 is alaso reporting it. Apparantly it's a minor leaguer who is ready to play by next year. It damn well better not be Duncan or Hughes, that's all I care about.

Spoon, i usually agree but to lump the Orioles in with Free agent acquistions with the Yankees is a little bit off.....actually way off.The Orioles signed Miguel Tejada granted for 6 years and 72 million (and people said they overpaid for him) and Javy Lopez for 3 years 24 million.  But prior to that their last big signing was Albert Belle back in like 1998 or something.  And for the last 6 years i have seen nothing but passes at the orioles hell look at some of the guys who passed up to play in baltimore:  Delgado, Pavano, Tim Hudson (he refused to negotiate an extension w/ the orioles prior to any trade), Vlad, Cliff Floyd and the list can go on and on.And if not for this years re-emergence they would have little hope in signing any this offseason as well.  And truth be told the orioles payroll this year is less then it was last year.  So please don't lump the O's in with the other Mega Powers in the AL East.

Oddly enough, this is the 4th starter we've had on the DL and only the 1st that really kills me.  Wright goes, so what?  Brown was better but not a kiler.  Even Pavano for a few weeks while not pitching real good isnt a killer.  THIS is a killer.  Worst thing of all is now Wang is trade bait, but we wont get as much as if he was healthy.  Our starting rotation is RJ, Moose........Redding and 2 other guys I cant think of.  Holy shit.  Our rotation can now be compared to the Iraqi Elite forces in the Battle for Baghdad.Kevin Brown for Tom Glavine, Yanks payem both.  Mets loose a contract and gain nothing.  I think both teams would do this.
