I got this off another sport's site.Baseball people who have spoken to the Yankees say they aren't sure what to do about their latest cliff dive. They have virtually nobody to trade. And they've been so bad in so many areas, they wouldn't know what to trade for, even if they could. Through 58 games (before their blowout win Wednesday in Milwaukee), they were on pace to hit about 50 fewer home runs than last year, score about 60 fewer runs, rack up their lowest slugging percentage in a decade and compile their lowest on-base percentage since 1992 (a year they finished 10 games under .500). But the really staggering numbers on the Yankees' stat sheet were: " .291 (batting average against their pitching staff) " .299 (batting average against their rotation) " 2 (the number of runs they'd been outscored by for the season) In fact, check out this progression. Here's the Yankees' runs-scored-and-allowed plus-minus over the last four years: 2002: plus-200 2003: plus 161 2004: plus 89 2005: minus-2 (through 58 games)

Fun Yankees stat of the day:  This time last year the Yankees had 27 come from behind wins so far this year only 11.Steve Phillips on Mike and Mike today thinks the Yankees if they are out by 10 games in one month may trade Womack, Sheffield, Matsui and Bernie Williams.  Now granted that is Steve Phillips but with all 4 of those guys final year contract players it is possible plus Matsui going back to the Yankees not so foregone as people think.What would you the Yankee fans consider a succesful home stand (as this may be a make or break homestand for the whole season) would 8-5 cut it or is 9-4 the bottom threshold?

I am very happy with today's win. Moose was fuckin' sick, and our defense looked sharp as a tack. Looks like Torre's verbal lashing after our pathetic defensive performance against St. Louis worked. I was amazed when Womack made that diving play. I really thought it was gonna drop in. He is doing a good job of learning that outfield position. Two weeks ago he probably doesn't make that catch. He came here to play second base, got taken over by a rookie, got shifted out to Left, and hasn't said a peep. He's taking it like a professional and doing his part. And Giambi's double... 2 years ago was GONE. He really is only warning track power now. But at least he contributed tonight.

Matsui should sprain his ankle more often. He's been hot at the plate since he started DHing. And you can count on Ruben to come up clutch 8 out 10 times. But it's fascinating how quickly a huge rally, with the game on the line, got completely stabbed in the heart by Giambi. How many times did he strike out today? 3? I would've rather had Russ Johnson batting in that spot.

Matsui was crushing the ball Sunday before he
hurt his ankle. And I thought there were signs before that he was
hitting the ball better.As far as the 9th, they'll probably load the bases, not score, and lose.Now that Andy Phillips has been called back up, I'd give him a shot at first.

I thought they started playing better against St Louis, even though
they lost 2 of 3. The pitching is finally coming around. Johnson Pavano
have had two excellent starts in a row. Mussina has been mostly good
since the 16 of 18 run.  Wang is solid. Now all they have to do is
hit.  Now they're starting to hit.

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize that hitting one clutch homerun instantly makes someone a great player. You have to let me KNOW about these rules in your head! I'm happy Giambi came up big tonight as the unlikely hero, but I'd be as shocked as the next guy if all of a sudden he instantly turns his whole season around and becomes a .300 hitter, or a good defensive 1st baseman. Just to fill everyone in Steinbrenner isn't the only one paying for the stadium so are the Royals, Pirates, Devil Rays and all other small market clubs.  The reason is (and Steinbrenner is a f'ing genius on this) that there is a provision that states that money that would go towards revenue sharing can be written off towards the new stadium building costs or some such thing.  So the money that Steinbrenner would cut a check for revenue sharing for those small market clubs now goes to his new stadium......that is sheer genius............but in no way does that top Peter Angelos owning the broadcasting rights for the NationalsYankees stat of the day:  Yankees record this year when trailing after 8 innings: 1-30

the giambi point was based on the fact that you guys kill him just
to kill him. He is hitting 300 in june, and probably has played the
best of anyone the last 2 weeks, yet, somehow, you guys always find
shit to blame on him. Like the stoppin at 3rd, you get on him for
running the SAME as any other first basemen. had they sent him, he
would have been out, and you'd be on him for that. the fuckin guy cant
win. i actually feel bad for giambi, and, even as a
sox fan, i wanna see him do well, cause he gets way too much shit and
alot of it for things he didnt have anything to do with. Yea he is
overpayed, but thats just as much your fault, and he is still working
at it, so i wish him well. i hope he hits 400 the rest of the way and
you guys keep sucking, thatll shut you all the fuck up

Maybe because Flaherty caught Johnson's last outing
where he did so well? I'm not sure. If Flaherty becoming Johnson's
personal catcher is what it takes for vintage Randy to stay around,
I'll take that. Maybe it'll get Posada more rest so he doesn't wear
down like he usually does in the last part of the season.

Ahhhhhh, fuck.So I went to the game...pissed that I had to see the Cubbies lose, especially after such a great comeback, but it was still great.  I've never been to Yankees' Stadium before, so that was pretty goddamn cool, or seen the Yankees live and in person, so there's two more baseball requirements I can check off as being done.My dad and I had seats right by the left field foul post, and we almost got nailed by that non-home run Sheffield hit early on.  I REALLY didn't expect that many Cubs fans to be there, but hey, they were, and it was awesome.  I'd safely bet well over a third of everyone there was decked out in Cubs' gear.It was very cool to see Jeter...makes me wish the Cubs could pick up a REAL leadoff hitter...it was impressive to see a guy play that role SO well.  Matsui was rocking the DH, even though I loathe that fucking rule.  Zambrano had some control problems, but it was really the bullpen that bobbled things in the end, though I was shocked that the Cubs didn't rock at least a couple of homers down over those walls by the foul lines....what's up with them being so short distance-wise from the plate and the space behind the plate being so freakishly huge?And I'm assuming the guy who does the announcing in the stadium has been there for decades, because, quitre frankly, he sounded like Death barely warmed over.All in all, a really fun night, and I'm glad I was able to make it up.  Now the Cubs need to make it up today and tomorrow...

No, that's just the debacle that is Corey Patterson.I'm sick of hearing about how "the Cubs need to give him time to reach his potential"...fuck no!  He's been in a "slump" for 2 1/2 SEASONS ever since he was injured in 2003.Strikes out left and right, refuses to even TRY to be the leadoff man he SHOULD be, doesn't utilize his speed to steal bases, can't bunt worth a damn...all he had going for him was his defense, and even that has been downright average this year.He's young enough that if the Cubs package him right a trade deal they could REALLY patch up some of the major holes they have in their lineup, namely LF, the relief bullpen and a quality leadoff hitter.  Bump Hairston up to CF full time or bring Pie up from the minors...whatever the choice, just get rid of K-Pat, NOW.

I think Jeter's always been very clear about what his role is on the
team. His job is to get on base, and move runners along, score runs.
Now as a leadoff hitter, its even more so. 
I dont think he's hit very many Home runs over the course of his
career that he's actually tried to hit. They just come as a result of
being in a count/situation where he's free to drive the ball. BUt good
for him, even though I dont think he gave a rats ass about that stat.

He SHOULDN'T have cared...the guy's a stupendous player without that stat.  And besides, how often does a leadoff hitter get a shot at a grand slam?Or is he new to that hitting slot?  Even if he is, watching this series has just increased my respect for him as a player, and my anger at the Cubs for not having a reliable leadoff man ANYWHERE in their lineup.

Jeter either leads off or hits second. It's been
that way pretty much his entire career. He's been very effective in
either spot, but the Yanks don't want him there, they want him second.
Every year they try and get a leadoff guy. Last year it was Lofton,
this year Womack. It never seems to work out. Next year, I would bet
money it will be Juan Pierre. He left the kind of impression that
Steinbrenner never forgets in the 2003 World Series. I think, and hope,
that will work out. But he is having a pretty bad year.Jeter is a fine leadoff guy, but I would prefer him batting second. It's just a better spot for him.

and that whole general area was pretty full, but the bottom rows of the
upper deck all the way from the end closest to the bleachers to just

We're definitely keeping this one interesting. I'm really glad Torre pinch hit for Womack. Even though Sierra got an out, he hit the ball well and it could've gotten through, and he scored a run. Womack probably would've grounded into a double play. And how 'bout Jeter with a 4-hit night!

I woke up this morning and STILL couldn't wipe the smile off my face from last night. That's why you watch Baseball. Because on any night you might see something you've never seen before. Even
if they would've lost, I was impressed with the way they never gave up,
kept coming back in a game they had no business being in. Shows how
much better they're playing, with a sense of urgency to win every
night. And now they're finding ways to WIN, instead of lose. 
They almost broke a record set by the 1920 Yanks for 14 runs in
an inning. Amazing how all those balls found holes, Even when you hit
the ball hard, sometimes it's right at someone. And the Homeruns were
just ridiculous. The Posada home run was exciting, and I watched the
next 3 in stunned disbelief. All night on the Fan, callers were
killing Lou for leaving that poor guy in the game. I felt the same way.
You felt sorry for the guy after a while. But I never liked Pinella as
a manager, anyway.

Wow, seeing Bernie hit (and hit WELL) in the 2 spot is really somethin' else... I feel like it's 1998 again. Amazing that he's been so hot they put him right in the heart of the order. 2 for 2 so far tonight with a HR. I honestly think he plays a lot better when he's playing center field every day. When he's in and out of the lineup and DHing on and off, his production is SIGNIFICANTLY less.

Come on hawk!  So I gues we're not counting the May 5th start against the lowly D Rays once again:  6 innings, 8 hits/2 walks & 5 runs all earned.  That's a bad start on any team, but I'll even let that one slide if you really push.  However, what about the St. Louis game:  4 innings, 7 hits/4 walks (eleven base runners) & 7 runs (albeit 4 earned).  I've seen your rant on this one, but I don't accept it.  I do believe he's been a bright spot for the NYYs this year, but he was clearly better the first time through the league.  It seems as though most teams now have a decent scouting report on him.  We'll see if he's a gamer now by how he adapts and adjusts.  If he doesn't, he's toast.  Cano on the other hand has been playing great of late and seems to have come out of his little slump.  He's made a few adjustments of his own that allowed him to get his average back up around .280 from .240.  Yet he is surrounded by an all-star team.  Will/can he hit as well when he doesn't see the great pitches if he ever gets traded?  Big question.  If he gets traded we'll find out.

Its late June and there are four teams in the AL East race, at least 7 in the wild card race.  I think the Yankees need to worry about much more then the O's.  In fact, the injuries have finally showed in the standings for the O's.  I now believe the Sox are back in command of late and are the current team to beat.  My Jays just keep chugging along between 3 games over .500 and 3 games under .500.  If they could call up a player with just a little power it would help this team tremendously.  It could be Gross, possibly Koskie when he returns, perhaps Wells will get hot (still he needs some support), but most likely will come in a trade involving Orlando Hudson and or one of our speedy/hit for avg. outfielders.  Wells and Rios are hopefully off the market.  As for Catalanotto and Johnson, who knows?  Hudson will definately be available if anyone makes the right offer.  He's up for arbitration, and the Jays have Hill ready to take over at short or 2nd and Adams filling the spot Hill doesn't.  Koskie has a new 3 year deal and I doubt they want to deal him.  I wouldn't have a problem with it though.  Then they could move Hinske back to third and look for some power at 1st keeping the solid fielding outfield together.  Oh well, they're probably still a year or two away.  Yet not being out in May brings back memories of the late 80's and early 90's.  Steib, Clancy, Key, Moseby, Upshaw, Mullinicks, Iorg, Fernandez, Gruber, Borders, Whitt, Olerud, Alomar, Molitor, Henke, Ward, Bell (George), Barfield, Carter, Stewart, Henderson, Cone, Wells, Stotlemeyer(sp), and on and on and on.

healthy, and there's nothing else wrong  w/him.  
And from the same team, see what they want for Griffey. I can live
w/out him, but get him if you can. He's better than any of the other
Centerfielders who are available. And he's another lefty for Yankee
stadium, so he might hit a ton of HR's.

Why would Cincinatti trade a guy straight up who is performing just as bad but makes more money, the idea of trading is to dump salary for young players.  The Yankees would have to eat the rest of Brown's contract if they traded him and likely give up their top prospect (the name escapes me is a 3B)

Id also take Cameron before Griffey, who will also most likely be
available, though probably youd have to work some kinda deal with
someone else, cause i dont think the mets will help out the yankees

Griffey would be a nice addition to the platoon at DH they have with Giambii, Sierra, Matsui, etc etc etc.But as an Orioles fan i hope they get a washed up hasn't averaged a hundred games over the last 3 years pull a hamstring while taking a dump piece of trash - maybe the yankees can give up a top pitching prospect to get him - oh wait i just described the Aaron Boone trade

Preston Wilson hasnt lived up to it though. He strikes out way too
much, and doesnt hit as well as cameron or play Defense as well. The
best option is Kotsay, and if they do anything, thats what it will be,
cause he wanted and extention and Oak cant afford him

Really good interview on Mike & Dog with Cashman. It was pretty no-holds barred. They really attacked the guy and gave him some tough questions. I almost felt bad for him at some points cuz they were HARSH, but it was a good interview. You gotta be harsh, cuz let's face it, the guy put together a 203 million dollar team that has stunk so far. The big point, which put my mind somewhat at ease, was this: Wang & Cano aren't going anywhere... So let not your hearts be troubled, skeptical Yankee fans. He said that if the Yankees dumped Cano and/or Wang for "an old guy who's only got 1 year left in him" (we all know that means 'Clemens'), they wouldn't do it. The only way they're losing prospects is if it's for somebody else who is young and can be a help to the club for the next 4-5 years into the future.

The interview was with Cashman, not George. No one let George off the hook about anything. There's a lot of people to blame for the Yankees' poor performance, from Steinbrenner to Cashman, to the coaching, down to the individual players. But the interview was with Cashman and that's who I was talking about.

Griffey 273 12 homer runs, 48 RBI hitting in a lineup with adam dunn and usually Willymo right around him. Kotsay
is hitting 276 with 5 homers 37 RBI in a shitty lineup on a shitty
team, plus now has much more range then griffey, plus a cannon for an
arm. if Kotsay is a 9, griffey would be a 6.8 right now

was good. He gets alot of blame, though the way the Yankees work, he is
one of many votes. With George's of course, always being the deciding
one. I also got the impression he's not very interested in
Griffey "Too much payroll" "Too much age" "We get more older players it
can really come back to haunt us" "Were looking to get younger" But always remember. He could be against a move and it still can happen.  And
Knowleged, dont remind me of the Boone trade. Willie Mo Pena, Brandon
Claussen for a guy who hit .200 for us. And fuck the Wakefield HR. If
we had a 3rd baseman who could hit, the fuckin game doesn't go to extra
innings. And if he hits a SAC FLY against the Marlins, we probably win
that series, too. Fuckin awful. But at the end of the day, we ended up with A-Rod. So I cant bitch too much.

yea cause he is on a good team, at least hitting wise. kotsay is the
only guy on his team, and is vastly better defensively. and you can
hook him in for the next few years, no one is scoring on em. id take
cameron before griffey too. so what, they get griffey, tears hammie

I don't buy the whole being on a better team makes you have better
offensive numbers argument, it really only applies with RBI's because
if people don't get on ahead of you, you can't knock them in. Other
than that you get at bats just like everyone else in the league, you
can hit .240 on a great team or .320 on a shitty team, that has to do
with you as an individual hitter not how your team performs.
