Man, Bush really fucked his party with how badly the Republicans had their asses handed to them tonight. Unless Obama is a complete lame duck, I can't see them regaining control for at least 8 years.

Very happy to see the outcome, but very disgusted at FOX news. Yeah, I know they are all Republican, all the time, but after Obama was declared the winner, I was flipping around channels when the only good one (CBS) was on commercial. FOX had some bitter asshole telling us how Obama was against white people back in college. Seriously, is that really fucking necessary all the time? Let the guy have his time in the spotlight without constantly having to attack him. FOX is a fucking joke and if not for 24, I would never watch that shithole channel.

We elected Obama? That's it -- I'm leaving the country!

Well, until December.

I don't agree with Obama politically. However, as I mentioned before, I AM proud to see America move past the bullshit racism of the past and elect a minority to the highest office in the land only 45 years after Dr. King's "I have a dream speech". I'm also glad to see the "passing of the torch to a new generation" as it were.

I know it's been touched on, but in all my studies of US history, especially in the 20th century, what Obama inspires in people really only seems comparable to RFK in 1968. It's always saddened me to think about what could have been with Robert Kennedy, and I'd like to think in certain ways this can be a 2nd chance for what he stirred.

I was watching some pundit punditing with the election map behind him, and all I could do is stare at those red states and think: RACISTS. Which is odd because the graphic was just a representation of people making an alternate choice, not necessarily motivated by racial issues. But those red states just seemed to glow with hatred on that map. Just a weird mental tick I enjoyed this evening.

I guess the real hard work starts now. But I am very happy tonight. Happy that my country will soon have leadership at the top that is worthy of the responsibility. Happy that the Constitution will no longer be used as an asswipe. Happy that we'll have a government that doesn't view human rights as an impediment to the sloppy shortcuts it wants to take in a blindly ideological foreign policy that disregards reality. Happy that we will have the chance to resume world leadership that respects our allies and partners and that we will get respect in return while being an even more effective enemy to our enemies. Happy that we can start to fix the problems that have been created or exacerbated during the past 8 years. Most happy that we will have political leadership that will stop treating the American public as rats or crabs in a cage to be kept fighting each other and will try to find common ground where we can work together on problems that affect us all equally.

John McCain gave a very classy and gracious speech tonight, while parts of his crowd were just assholes. I'm sure Sen. McCain will play a leading role in getting bipartisan agreement on many of the problems that we face.

The bottle is empty and I need to get some sleep so that I can wake in a new morning where the air will be a little sweeter and the sun will be a little brighter.

It was a good day.

...My brother need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life, to be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it.

Those of us who loved him and who take him to his rest today, pray that what he was to us and what he wished for others will someday come to pass for all the world.

As he said many times, in many parts of this nation, to those he touched and who sought to touch him:

Some men see things as they are and say why.
I dream things that never were and say why not.

I'd like that second chance.

He called me about a half hour ago all excited. Though he's been staying in WV, he wanted me to know that he made it down to our poling place here in VA to vote for the first time in his life. He voted for Obama, and was just thrilled about how the night went. Such a great moment.

I saw Obama's speech - I didn't realize he'd scaled it back from all the fanfare and whatnot that usually goes along with the acceptance speech. I liked hearing what some PBS commentators had to say about how it was just another day and there was work to be done... that that was what he was trying to convey.

What a great public speaking gig though - addressing planet earth. What club do you work after that?

Very few people who seriously run for President do it for professional reasons. They can find much greater professional success in other fields. For the most part, they all (Democrat, Republican, etc.) truly feel they can make the country better. However, there is an ego aspect to it all, too.

One other thought on the election. This is the first time I've been overseas for an election (Mojo and Yerdaddy are probably old hands at this). Maybe it's this particular year but everybody is really into the U.S. elections. I always got asked if I voted, who I was voting for, what did I think. The hotel had a banquet room showing election returns all night on satellite and the Ambassador had folks over his place to watch the returns this morning.

It's a weird way to watch the election.

Not to take anything away from the campaign Obama ran (and it was as good as if not better than Carter's in '76 or Clinton's in '92) but it seems like this was more a "fuck you, get out" vote against Bush and the GOP.

What I'm sensing here is that folks are happy to see Obama elected. The Arab street is not too fond of Bush's "war against Islam".

AJ, I disagree on your idea that this was more of a "fuck you, get out" vote against Bush and the GOP. Obama has mobilized such an amazing number of new voters with that as a factor sure, but his character, passion and poise truly inspires so many. You may not agree with his policy right now, but the fuck you vote was when an awful candidate like Kerry almost won the office in spite of absolutely no charm and substance. You just witnessed the cover of future history books and a truly great moment for our country. I hope so much he can build a core stronger middle class and prove to the doubters that his policies enacted are filled with great ideas that help shape a strong country for generations to come. I took a look on the FoxNews boards and the racist, sickening comments are all over. To call it petty at this point is quite an understatement.

Oh no, it wasn't ENTIRELY that -- but there was certainly an element of that there I think: probably moreseo in terms of the Congressional races. I'm trying to find the results right now. That's why you're seeing the Dems bump up their numbers in the Congress. I was surprised that Chris Shays lost in CT and Elizabeth Dole lost in NC.

I gave credit where credit is due: Obama's campaign will rank up there with Carter's in '76 and Clinton's in '92. And as I also said before, I'm proud of this country for electing a minority. I hope that from now on race, gender, and age will no longer be an issue: just the policies.

I'm just glad it isn't Hillary for the next 4 years. What worries me is that Obama will pick her to be HHS Secretary.

Dole was in a tight race and went PURE attack and even called her opponent "Godless". She even went as far as having someone fake her opponent's voice having her say terrible things about God and religion. Multiple religious leaders asked Dole to cut the ads as even they were insulted by these ads and she refused and even made more. On the race/age/sex issue, you can't expect these to simply disappear because of a powerful moment in history and statement to say the least. However, it's still symbolic and unfortunately one moment in history versus many more the other way. Even now as far as we've come, and expecting to move even further in the right direction, there will always be those who continue to make these topics an issue for both pure/true reasons, and also for their own self interest.

Right now, as I post this, Norm Coleman leads Al Franken by about 700 votes with 99% of the vote counted. This one's going into OT, because I think there'll be a recount.

And, hey, I did what I could to get McConnell out of there, but we came up just short. Still much closer than I expected. I wish the Democratic Party here had taken this seriously and gotten a better candidate: Bruce Lunsford is one corrupt motherfucker, and I voted for him holding my nose. They should have run Ben Chandler, grandson of former governor A.B. enjoy watching your jobs being outsourced to third world countries as obama drives taxes through the roof for your employers and the 7% which pay 80% of the taxes of this nation. Socialist america here you go.:flush:

okay. it's over. save it for 2012.

I didn't vote for obama. i find him extremely calculated, dishonest, disingenuous, weak, and inexperienced.

but he won and he is now my president. 100 per cent.

on the plus side, i hope black folks in the dc area soften their obvious animus towards me because i am a white man. i didn't realize this until i spent time in other areas of the usa and saw how african americans outside of the dc area were a lot warmer and treated me with genuine kindness. you could see it in their eyes. really. in dc they look at me like i'm a slave owner. i'm the minority here and treated as such. isn't it ironic. don't ya think?

also hopefully obama will decriminilize marijuana, relax prostitution laws, and appoint some supreme court justices that aren't driven by their religious convictions. i'm all for that too. hey hey hey.

on the scary side is obamas' naiviate on international affairs and his poor judgment on issues of our national security.

but, i must be wrong. there are a lot of people a lot smarter than me that supported obama, from warren buffet to other folks whose opinions i respect.

i just hope you all are right. because if i am right, we are in trouble.

what good is this feel good story if we don't effectively deal with iran or we enter a conflict vs. russia due to our probable approach of capitulation and acquiesence instead of a stronger type of response? peace through might is now off the table.

we will see. obama 100 per cent.

I'm not certain of the process, but if a standing senator retires or dies in office, doesn't the governor of the state choose the replacement?

If so, I can't see that she can choose herself.

It's going to be an interesting couple of days watching people pick at the corpse of the Republican Party.

There's going to be a lot of jockeying between the few moderates that are left standing, and the fringe, for control.

This is the only advice I'd offer, as someone who doesn't really care what they do:

The Republicans were pretty much unanimously kicked out of New England last night in the house and senate, save for Maine (which isn't really New England).

They've lost all traction in the Northeast.

If they're going to come back, they need to find a way to get that back.

Obama's whole campaign was a talking point, he never said anything except that he increase capital gains tax by 100%.

Stop thinking that you are some beacon of enlightened thought. Congratulations on your vote for change. (talking point made)

Some of Obama's proposals include:

A relocation of American troops from Iraq to Afghanistan and back to the US

Additional taxes for those making over 200 thousand

Tax breaks for the working class

allowing americans to buy into the governmental health system (similar to the Healthy NY plan)

tax breaks for people using hybrid vehicles and "green" businesses

I'm so sick of being called uneducated for being conservative.

His tax break will never happen. Taxes will go up. We are working from a huge deficit and he wants to increase government spending by 950 billion. Where do you see a tax cut? Also he does not want to pull troops from Afganistan, he wants to increase troop levels there.

He's allowing the bush tax cuts to expire. That's already raising taxes to the Clinton level.

That's not a 100% increase and it's not for 100% of taxpayers.

This is what I'm talking about - do your own research before just repeating something you've heard.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/08/obama-clarifies.html

“The top capital-gains rate for families making more than $250,000 would return to 20% -- the lowest rate that existed in the 1990s and the rate President Bush proposed in his 2001 tax cut. A 20% rate is almost a third lower than the rate President Reagan set in 1986,” wrote Obama advisors Jason Furman and Austan Goolsbee in Thursday’s Wall Street Journal.

I hope Republicans do some serious thinking about fiscal responsibility while you are out in the political wilderness. The current administration's policy of cutting taxes while increasing spending on defense doesn't work. It just puts us deeper in debt to China. When McCain voted against Bush's tax cuts, he said that no country has ever waged war and cut taxes at the same time. You can't tell Americans that we are engaged in a war for our survival but then not ask them to pay for it. Do we just pass on the cost to our kids? I would be more of a GOP fan if they went the libertarian route. Close our overseas military bases, skip the optional wars, cut domestic spending, shrink the federal government, and then reduce taxes. Be consistent in your beliefs. You can't have Bush's massive spending coupled with tax cuts. When Republicans slam on Obama for saying he will raise taxes, I want to ask them how they propose to pay for our defense, medicare, federal highway programs, etc.

First of all, without crisis, the "Obama" thing isnt close to as significant. In a time of economic "peril", people shift left. Without that meltdown in September, Obama has 273-285 electoral votes. This country is still split and we are still a center right country. If Obama lets Pelosi take him to the left ala Delay/Bush, he will be in trouble.

My brand of conservatism is to ignore social issues, Guiliani on foreign policy and more of a Huckbee style domestic policy. I think the free-market conservatives are out of touch and I think that more of a populist domestic system which skews toward the free market is the best direction for this country.

I should have written if Obama would have won without the meltdown, it would have been 273-285. Noone can dispute that.

Nobody can support it, either. It's a self-defeating hypothetical as you've presented it.

Actually, sir I nailed all of the Senate races (so long as MN and OR hold) outside of the Stevens thing (GOD BLESS ALASKA) and I got the number in the house down to one. I should have written if Obama would have won without the meltdown, it would have been 273-285. Noone can dispute that.

No one can dispute that? So pre-meltdown McCain had a significant lead in the polls (ugh, I hate polls, but I'm just using them to prove that this was not AT ALL a done deal for McCain) and the Obama plan to register new voters didn't exist?

Bush's popularity was insanely good pre-meltdown? Voters could have identified McCain with unpopular Bush no matter how the economy was. Stop acting like your opinion is a fact.
