I watched it twice, and I'm still trying to figure some things out.

Ha, alright cool. I definitely liked it, and I know I'll find more genius every time I see it. I'll give my final review in 2019.

It probably helps in a packed theater. Comedies always do. It was just that I knew where it was going, and it took too long to get there. Just get to the morning after already, we know that's the basis of the movie. But the ending with the slideshow is genius.

well, they need to set up the story. how else are we supposed to know/ or care about the characters? how about we just fast forward to all the good parts in a film? let's just fast forward to when the dinosaurs attack and when the Deathstar explodes! Let's just get rid of the first 15 minutes of Reservoir Dogs too - let's get right to Mr. Blonde cutting off the cops ear.

people certainly knew where it was going, we got that from the synopsis and previews. and without the first 15 minutes of the movie, half of the jokes wouldn't have made sense.

I can't think of one. Just didn't crack a smile the first 15 minutes. They can set the exposition without sacrificing humor. We wouldn't see Zach's ass but we see his dick twice so it evens out. Eh, oh well. We both can agree its a funny flick.

How did you feel about the very ending - the last 2-3 minutes. Personally, I loved the entire film until those last minutes where I felt Kaufman tried to explain his film. It felt to me that he was unsure, if at the end, we even get what he was going for.
I think it would have better without the voice-over that ended it.

About the house on fire - I don't think the issue is that the house is on fire, but rather that someone would decide to buy and live in a house on fire.

I kinda dug the ending. I felt like they copped out by not having stories for some of the more major characters, but I actually kind of enjoyed the voice over.

As for the house, the person showing her the house says "It's very important decision, how you want to die". So I think you're totally right.

I was kinda sick all weekend, and it was raining a lot. I watched a few movies. I read the Twilight book awhile ago, so I decided to watch the movie. I asked Ryan to watch it with me while the kids napped. Boy, I am sure he probably won't watch another movie with me. The movie sucked. The acting was terrible. I feel kinda wrong paying $2.99 to rent it now. I wonder if the video store will reimburse me?

My problem with the voice over wasn't so much that it wasn't enjoyable. It was more like, we already got the point that the voice over was making. It made sense and it fit the scene alright, but it was almost like it was too easy to end the film that way. To me it felt like - if you missed the point early on, here it is once more.
All in all, I really did enjoy the film - and don't think he would have been better off to give it to another director.

Zodiac (blu ray) - with a little over 6 months to go in the decade, it's probably to safe to say that this is my favorite film released during this ten-year span. The film's classification-defying structuring and obsessive attention to detail have never ceased to fascinate or absorb me in any of the multitude of viewings I've taken in. I have unnatural man-love for David Fincher; I have a feeling when his career is beginning to wind down, people will look back and agree that this film represented the most pivotal turning point in his career.

I popped in the Casino blu ray shortly thereafter. I'm at the part where the cheater gets zapped with the cattle prod. This is in my all-time Marty Top 5 alongside Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The Aviator and Cape Fear.

i can't even tell you the degree i hated "Zodiac". i won't walk out of a movie cuz its so bad, but i wanted to walk out of Zodiac because it was so boring and cliche filled

WHY did jake gyllenhaal play his character like a goofy adam sandler-type retard? He was a guy who studied complex clues and put them together. Cuz he was a cartoonist? And when he is being obsessive and his cunt wife calls him out on it? so awful. I never cared less about a crime in movie history then the zodiac film made me not care about the zodiac murders. I'd say Downey Jr was good because he breathed life into the film whenever he was on screen, but that made the whole movie worse when he wasn't on screen (which was most of the movie). And the animal crackers bullshit? Terrible

I tried desperately to watch an old Sonny Chiba movie last night, "Street Fighter."

I had just watched Kill Bill I and II and I know he played Hattori Hanzo so I decided to watch a film of him in his prime back in the 70's.

It was unwatchable. Worse than the cheesy Chinese movies you'd see on "Kung Fu Theater" on Saturday afternoons back in the day.

I couldn't make it halfway through.

I did enjoy both Kill Bills though, even if it was the 10th time I'd seen each of them.

The Filth and the Fury: A Sex Pistols Film
directed by Julien Temple
One moment that was cool was when the Pistols were in Huddersfield, England. They played a matinee show to the kids of parents who were striking in the fire department. Before the show there was cake handed to the kids. When the Sex Pistols started there set the cake went everywhere. Johnny Rotten was covered. Temple also kept showing parts of Olivier's Richard the Third. Apparently Rotten was fond of this interpretation.

But towards the end it touches on some really deep stuff and has some great moments. I recommend it.

Pelham was a standard summer action movie. Pretty much a way to kill 2 hours about a movie I'll never think of again. Not terrible, not great. Pretty much nothing. But Tony Scott's visual style kills me. Slow the fuck down. And you don't need slowmo shots.

Year One is one of the dumber comedies ever made. Bottom line, if you laugh at the Jack Black persona or the Michael Cera persona, you will laugh. It's basically their schtick for the entire time. Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven." First time I watched it since it came out.

I know it was highly acclaimed, but it just felt way too current. The way it was shot, the dialogue, etc. screamed modern times and not 1870's. I think a lot of it is the way films are shot nowadays, too. Too "real" looking, almost like video tape.

Yeah - I agree, Gvac. Movies don't always look like movies anymore. There is something to be appreciated in the things that aren't exactly perfect. It's the computer age, I guess?

It does help sometimes to shoot in a format that appears too clean on screen. Lynch's Inland Empire, for example, really benefited from the use of DV - but the format isn't always the most appropriate.

I disagree.

Unforgiven was excellent in its realism of the time. Especially the town of Big Whiskey. It's sparse, small and barely held together. A strong wind could blow it over. Much like the characters. Dirty, unkempt and morally bankrupt. In fact, a look at most Westerns has the heroes in clean clothes, and the towns are neat and tidy. Unforgiven takes it's look much like a classic such as Shane, which was also noted for its realism.

And the gunfight at the end is very much how actual gunfights occurred in those times. Close range for any hint of accuracy, a lot of misses, misfires, panicked firing and bloody messy.

With the exception of Maggie Grace playing a 17 year old, no, the acting and dialog was fine. It's not a action/thriller on the level as, say, The Fugitive, but still fun nonetheless.

Valkyrie. Much better than I thought. Although the accents were so stupid. Cruise speaking German for 30 seconds to open the movie, then regular voice for the remainder. Some German accents for other characters, some British. I guess its just as dumb for them so be speaking English with German accents but it was just weird, no way around it.

But the story was really good. Tense, moved along. I was into it. Worth watching for sure.

Same thing here. The reviews were so bad (especially re: Cruise's being outclassed by all of the other actors.) I waited until it came out on DVD and was also pleasantly surprised at how decent it was.

In terms of the accents, if the actors aren't capable of pulling them off (or the audience isn't capable of handling them) then I think the way "Hunt for Red October" handled it worked great (60 seconds of the native language then 119 minutes of plainish English.)

i love that movie.

watched revolutionary road last night. i thought it was great. the character of john and his being "not well" led to some great dialogue.

I thought Michael Shannon was so fantastic in that role. I thought any other year, he would have been a serious Oscar contender. Made the movie for me.

My sister, who is 8 months pregnant, got that from Netflix. I told her I forbid her from watching and made her send it back. You don't watch that movie if you are pregnant, newly married, or in a rough patch in your marriage.

I am none of those things and i was still sad.

I just watched this. The acting I thought was great, and it was very sad, but It didn't strike me as much as I kinda expected. maybe because the downward spiral was pretty obvious and kept on going- you never really felt things would be alright.

Nice tight cast that work well together, including Kristen Bell.
Many many cool guest stars and cameos.
And a basic plot line that remains on track throughout.

Amazingly good, probably the best of the year thus far. Story about a 3 man bomb squad unit in Iraq. They go around disarming bombs and IED's. Jeremy Renner is an Oscar nominee for sure.

I have no experience to base this on obviously, but I have to imagine this is the most authentic portrayal of this aspect of combat. Probably the best film ever made about the Iraq war (althought I loved In The Valley of Elah too).

And this may sound sexist, but I was a little surprised to see a woman directed it. It's such a masculine story. She did a fantastic job though.

Some pretty funny scenes, but Paul Rudd shouldn't be the star of a movie. Ultimately I was disappointed with it.

I'm a fan of the TV show Gavin & Stacey which these 2 star in, so I figured I'd check out this movie.

I was surprised at how much I liked it. Not enough nudity or lesbianism to warrant the title, but still a really funny film.

Moon- it was a decent movie with a great idea but I just felt like it never could get over that hump. From the 10 minute point on, I kept waiting on it to go from good to great and it never did. It's worth watching tho for something different.

Visioneers starring Zach Galifinakis. It came to netflix's instant watch recently. It was strong 3 out of 5 stars. A number of very funny uncomfortable jokes. At 90 minutes it may have been about 20 minutes too long.

It's a dystopian 'comedy'.

I went into The Collector knowing absolutely nothing about it and found it surprisingly effective. It's kind of an odd hybrid of the original Saw and Home Alone (!). The killer was memorably demented and the film was staged with real stylish skill. The Argento-esque score was another nice touch. I'd recommend it to any fan of horror while urging them to not categorically write off seeing it because of the Saw comparison which would understandably be a dealbreaker for some people.

For a superhero movie I appreciated that it tried to bring elements of substance and depth to the table. Any time something from this genre tries to elevate itself above being a mindless action spectacle I'll award it special points for effort that compensate for some of the areas where it happens to err. Very uneven movie overall but I'd still marginally approve it for having its heart in the right place during its stab at uniqueness. People with insider knowledge of the source material attest that a great cinematic adaptation being spawned was virtually impossible so maybe we should appreciate that anything halfway watchable resulted.

Waltz With Bashir - Instant Top 5 movie for me. It's an animated film about the bombing of Lebanon and the subsequent genocide by Israeli forces. The film is animated and follows a man trying to recover a particular memory from the start of the war. Basically, it's him going around talking to his friends and colleagues about what they can recall. Everything is told from memory and is therefore tending toward the dream-like, with regard to story telling.

That is it animated and dealing with memory, it would not surprise me to hear a Walking Life comparison - this movies kicks sand in Walking Life's face.

The subject matter is a little severe, especially for parents so be warned. I don't know how much more I can say without giving away the movie so I guess that's it. District 9. Pretty good, I'm not a huge sci-fi fan. If you can buy into the rules they set up for the aliens, then you should have no problem.

I wish sci-fi had universal rules on aliens and time travel.

But this movie goes to prove the story of the summer movie wise-you don't need a big star to have a big movie. The Hangover had little known people and it is a massive hit. The Hurt Locker should be front runner for best picture and that has no marketable person in it. District 9 had complete unknowns and it should kill financially and do well critically.

Just make a good movie, regardless of who is in it, and people will respond.

The best overall performance in that movie is either Lemmon or Harris. I lean towards Lemmon, because his role is more complicated and requires more of a range than Harris', but Harris is great.
