So, my wife and I were doing some stuff around the apartment, so we decided to put on something innocuous that wouldn't take much concentration to follow. She picked Fred Claus. We made it about 30 minutes in.

The premise that sets up the movie is that a) Santa Clause has an older brother (okay), b) when Santa Clause became a saint, he became frozen in time so that he doesn't age anymore (wait? what? Never heard that one before, but I guess that would explain why Santa Clause seems to be immortal. That really sucks for people like Mother Teresa who didn't start on the road to sainthood until after death), and c) when a person becomes a saint, their immediate family gets frozen in time too (huh?)

It's really just a convoluted way to have Vince Vaughn play Santa Clause's older brother in the present, but whatever.

Oddly, I didn't have nearly as hard a time swallowing that as I did the following. Fred Claus lives in Chicago and has a love interest. Not too hard to swallow. She's a meter maid or whatever the PC term is for that. That seems fine. But wait...she's British. I'm going out on a limb here, and I'll say that in the entire city of Chicago, there's not a single British woman writing parking tickets. To top it off, at one point in the movie, we find out that she has a Polish last name. It's as if they found out that they got Rachel Weisz as the romantic lead and didn't make any adjustments to the script to accommodate her.

Anyway, from what I saw, the movie wasn't very good. Maybe it got super good after we turned it off, but I doubt it.

Actually the movie was great. The CGI was super cool. The plot was interesting. It was just the shitty political message that you could see coming a mile away that fucked it up. Good movie but not sure I'd ever watch it again.

Good acting more so by Tim McGraw than Sandra Bullock I thought.

Also caught the last hour of some foreign ( Swedish, Finnish or something like that ) film on cable called " Evil ".

It was a variation on the outsider goes to the private school and fights back against the " in crowd " theme.

Watched The Terminator and T2 over the last couple days for the first time in a long time.

And I have to confess....T1 is WAY better than T2.

I think most people remember watching T2 as a kid, with the effects, and the whole "Arnold the friendly terminator" gimmick and say that it's awesome, but outside of the effects, that movie blows from a storytelling standpoint.

With T1, the pacing and drawing out of suspense is fantastic, and people forget just how ruthless Arnold was in that movie...he just executes his way across LA...in T2, I don't even think he kills anyone.

I don't post enough in this thread considering I watch several movies a week, so I'm going to try and contribute more here.

Since I keep track of every movie I watch, here's what I've seen so far this month:

The Hangover (2009) - Didn't find this nearly as funny as most people gave it credit for. I did enjoy the Tyson appearance, since I didn't know about it in advance. The ending with all the pictures was pretty hilarious.

Rebecca (1940) - I love watching Hitchcock films, but this was one I had never seen before. A few twists which were expected and a really strong ending.

Fahrenheit 451 (1966) - I knew the story going in since it's based on such a famous book and knowing Truffaut directed it, I figured it had to be good. It's so funny living in the 21st century and watching movies from 40-50 years ago about the future. The sets look extremely dated, but the TV's in this movie look exactly how they do now, widescreen and mounted on walls.

Blue Velvet (1986) - Prior to this I had only seen 2 David Lynch films, Eraserhead and The Elephant Man. I had no idea what I was in for. Thankfully this was no where near as odd as I found Eraserhead to be. Really cool plot with a great performance by Dennis Hopper.

Bell Book and Candle (1958) - Jack Lemmon is one of my all-time favorite actors, so I watched this mainly for him, but also for James Stewart who plays the lead. Nothing really great about this one, just a romantic comedy about a witch falling in love with a regular guy.

Bite the Bullet (1975) - Watched this one because it starred Gene Hackman and James Coburn. It's basically an early 1900's version of The Cannonball Run but on horseback, and not nearly as funny.

The Pianist (2002) - I had no idea this was based on a true story. I just watched it because I love movies involving Nazi's, plus Roman Polanski directed it. This movie had a few  moments. That wheelchair scene was brutal. Really liked this one.

My Favorite Year (1982) - This one features Mark Linn-Baker, so throughout the entire movie I kept expecting Balki to pop out. Decent movie, Peter O'Toole was great as a drunk.

La mariée était en noir aka The Bride Wore Black (1967) - Another one by Truffaut, though this one felt more like a Hitchcock film. Nice revenge film with a lady in the lead doing all the dirty work.

Dodsworth (1936) - This one has been sitting on my DVR for months. I recorded it because Dennis Miller was a guest programmer on TCM and this was one of his selections. I was surprised at how much I liked it.

See No Evil (1971) - Recorded this one just off the description, "Blind Englishwoman flees barefoot from boots wearing killer." Nice little suspense movie. The title was changed for American audiences. The original UK title is Blind Terror, which I think is a much better title.

Reds (1981) - This is one of those films I always put off watching because of its length (3 hours +), so I finally decided to watch it. Warren Beatty is pretty great in this. I was surprised how much humor there was in such a dramatized film.

There's a Girl in My Soup (1970) - Peter Sellers was such a hilarious actor and he was funny in this romantic comedy featuring Goldie Hawn. Not my favorite Sellers' film, but still funny.

Tengoku to jigoku aka High and Low (1963) - I had no idea this was an Akira Kurosawa film until I checked the IMDB page after I watched it. I watched it cause the guide said Toshiro Mifune was in it and I've enjoyed many of his films. The subtitles didn't kick in until the dialog started, so that's why I didn't know who directed it, cause the opening credits were all Japanese.
Really great film!

Cat People (1943) / The Curse of the Cat People (1944) - I watched these back to back. The first one was decent. It's pretty cool how older movies built up suspense with showing so little.
The sequel could have been good if it wasn't a sequel. It had nothing to do with the first one. They just capitalized on the success of the first one and brought back the same actors.

Fear Strikes Out (1956) - I watch a lot of baseball movies, but this is one I had never seen. Based on a true story, this is about Red Sox player Jimmy Piersall, who had a nervous breakdown and had to be institutionalized. A lot of the things in this movie never actually happened the way they were portrayed, but the story is still good.

The Freshman (1925) - I love silent comedies and this is considered one of Harold Lloyd's best. Harold is great, but I get so distracted watching his films cause I'm always looking for his fake hand in different scenes.

White Lightning (1973) - I kinda felt like I was watching a sequel to Deliverance with this one. Movie takes place in Arkansas where Burt Reynolds plays an informant trying to stop a moonshine ring, while also on the hunt for the person responsible for killing his brother.

Dark of the Sun (1967) - Never heard of this before. IMDB lists the title as The Mercenaries and that's a far more appropriate title. Jim Brown is in it and his movies rarely disappoint me. Decent film.

Anatomy of a Murder (1959) - Courtroom dramas seem like they'd be a boring watch, but they rarely are. This one was exceptionally great.

American Psycho - Uncut Version (2000) - Finally got around to catching this. I've had the DVD for a while, but just never watched it. I liked it a lot.

Sounder (1972) - Decent film about a poor black family in 1930's Louisiana. Didn't realize that Sounder was the dog's name. I normally avoid movies about animals cause they never end positively, but I figured if I could handle a dog stomping in American Psycho, then I'd be alright.

A Girl in Every Port (1952) - This is a Groucho Marx movie without his brothers. I love watching Marx Brothers movies, but this one felt weird not having the Marx Bros. in the supporting cast. Not nearly as funny either.

Le notti di Cabiria aka Nights of Cabiria (1957) - Great Fellini film! He casts his wife as a prostitute trying to find happiness in her life.

Mad Dog Morgan (1976) - With Dennis Hopper only given weeks to live, I decided to watch one of his movies I haven't seen yet. I caught this on IFC and even though it was presented in widescreen, it still looked horrible. There were parts that were still pan and scanned, so I guess they got a blown up transfer of a 2:35:1 film and stretched it to 1:85:1.
The movie itself was alright. Based on a true story, Dennis Hopper plays a guy on the run chased in Australia.

Looking for Richard (1996) - This is a documentary directed by Al Pacino, who happens to be a big Shakespeare fan, so he wants to do a play based on Richard III and make Shakespeare more accessible to American viewers.
I thought this exchange was great when a guy says to Al, "Shakespeare used a lot of fancy words. You know it's hard to understand those...grasp those words." Pacino then responds with "Excuse me, they're not fancy words. I think that's where we get confused. It's like poetry though.
It's hard to grab hold of some rap. Slang, too, but it's hard to get hold of it. Until your ear gets tuned, you have to get tuned up."

Zwartboek aka Black Book (2006) - Going in, all I knew of this movie was that it was directed by Paul Verhoeven (RoboCop, Basic Instinct). What a great movie this turned out to be.

Duel in the Sun (1946) - I had heard this was a classic western, but I had no idea it was more of a love story. I should have known right at the beginning when Jennifer Jones took top billing over Gregory Peck and Joseph Cotton.
Speaking of Gregory Peck, I don't know if any of you are familiar with the 1960s marionette TV show Captain Scarlet, but the bad guy on that show was Captain Black. His facial features were made to resemble Peck's, so every time I see him in a movie, the Captain Scarlet theme goes through my head.

Breakheart Pass (1975) - Alistair Maclean wrote the novel which this movie was based on. I had seen a few other Maclean based movies, so I couldn't pass this one up. I have really enjoyed everything I've seen by him and this one didn't disappoint.

It Should Happen to You (1954) - I have always liked watching Jack Lemmon movies and this one was his film debut. I figured he'd just have a cameo or small role, but he was the male lead.

The Bedford Incident (1965) - For some reason I really like movies about submarines. This one is about Sidney Poitier playing a reporter assigned to a Navy ship to cover a war-crazed captain. His ship ends up spotting a Russian sub, so he chases it through international waters. Really great ending with this film.

Here's what I watched this week:

Intacto aka Intact (2001) - Spanish movie about luck. I was a little confused at first cause I thought only one person could possess the power, but then several others had it at once. Cool concept. Loved seeing Max Von Sydow in it.

The Fugitive Kind (1959) - Marlon Brando plays a drifter coveted by 2 women. Really great performance by him.

Sanshô dayû aka Sansho the Bailiff (1954) - Japanese film about a brother and sister sold into slavery. Liked this one a lot.

55 Days at Peking (1963) - There was a lot of hype about this movie premiering on TCM over at www.cinemaretro.com so I decided to see it for myself. It's an epic drama set in China, 1900. Charlton Heston plays an American Marine, who along with several allied countries are there to defend against the Boxer Rebellion.

Ordinary People (1980) - This was the Best Picture winner for 1980. Family drama about a teenage son who doesn't get along with his mother ever since the death of his older brother. Didn't know this until I watched it, but it was directed by Robert Redford. Tough to say it was better than Raging Bull, but it was really good.

Muerte de un ciclista aka Death of a Cyclist (1955) - Spanish film about an adulterous couple who hit a cyclist and leave him for dead, for fear that their secret relationship will be revealed. Loved this one.

Becket (1964) - A King feels betrayed by his best friend who devotes his life to God instead of he.

Perro come perro aka Dog Eat Dog (2008) - Columbian movie about a thug assigned to pick up some money, but he ends up secretly keeping it for himself. The bosses just know he has it, but they can't prove it. Lots of violence, but very enjoyable.

The New World (2005) - English explorers in the 1600's arrive in Virginia to set up colonies, but they must defend against the Native Americans. I wanted to like this one, but I just thought it was really boring.

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) - A nephew discovers his 2 old aunts poison lonely men and bury them in their basement. Screwball comedy from the 40s, a little over the top at some moments, but still really funny.

my daughter Michele picked it, loves the banjo/guitar duel. picked out the poor editing like the canoe guy who died. earlier he's paddling, has a hat on, next scene paddling, no hat, next scene has a hat on

then jon voigt climbing that cliff NO FUCKING WAY! and why the fuck would they bring a 200 ft piece of rope on a canoeing trip. and they don't chase the lameass hillbilly after jon voigt wrestles the shotgun away from him. they could have chased him and beat him and his mom

overall still a good movie

watched the 2nd Matrix movie. 3 young athletic studs(except for Fishburne) chasing a train guy who runs like he has a stick up his ass. three scenes in a row where the 3 young athletes and Fishburne are losing ground on the guy. i can't help but say WHY THE FUCK would they do that????

Here's what I watched this week:

The Cassandra Crossing (1976) - Similar to The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno, this is one of those disaster type movies loaded with big names.
This one is about a train in Europe that has a passenger with a contagious deadly virus. Decent, but not as good as the 2 mentioned.

College (1927) - I'm a big fan of Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd silents, but I had never seen one by Buster Keaton, so this was my first.
All of these guys basically play the same role, lovable losers trying to impress a girl, failing miserably, and then rebounding for a happy ending. I pretty much know how they'll all end, yet I can't get enough.

True Grit (1969) - The Coen Bros. are remaking this film, so I wanted to see the original and now that I have, I probably won't see their remake, much like how I didn't bother seeing their version of The Ladykillers.
Like Chaplin and Lloyd, John Wayne pretty much plays the same character in all his films as well, yet they're all pretty much fun films to watch. He actually won the Best Actor award for this film. I didn't think it was an outstanding performance, but I don't know who he was up against. May have just been a sympathy award since it was his only win in his long career.

How the West Was Won (1963) - I didn't watch the SuperBowl, so I wanted to watch a long movie that was occupying space on my DVR during that time and this was it.
Multiple directors contributed on this film as it followed 3 generations of families, so it was like several short films combined into one epic story.
I was never really a western fan, but having watched a bunch over the last few years I am definitely liking what I've seen. This one was enjoyable.

Bad Day at Black Rock (1954) - Color movies from the 50s seem so much more colorful than the decades following, but I think it's because they really want those colors to stand out, so you have the antagonist wearing a bright red hat, great looking sets, etc...
This film was under 90 minutes and didn't waste anytime getting to the story. Taking place 4 years after Pearl Harbor, a one armed man gets off a train in a small town and immediately starts asking questions about the death of a Japanese man who lived there.

Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet (1940) - True story about a German doctor who discovers the cure for syphilis. Considering this film came out in 1940, seems pretty daring to make a movie about a cure for a sexually transmitted disease. Although in the movie they did explain it can be passed from sharing a drinking glass.

Sophie's Choice (1982) - This is one film I thought I'd never see. It just seems unmanly to watch, but I really liked it. It was nothing like I expected.
Meryl Streep was great, but when isn't she? Kevin Kline really surprised me though, he was really good. This was actually his first film.

Up in the Air: Very good & timely in this economy. Clooney does his usual good job, the two actresses whose names I don't know are great and Kenny Powers and Arrested Development guy have nice supporting roles.

Crazy Heart - The story has been done before but Jeff Bridges is great and Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall have nice supporting roles. Having Robert Duvall in it cemented the connection between this & Tender Mercies, which it kind of replays.

The Groomsmen - I Netflixed this after hearing Ron refer to it. Kind of typical Ed Burns film but Jay Mohr does a nice job at being a lovable mook.

Here's what I watched this week:

The Sea Hawk (1940) - Errol Flynn stars in this as an English ship captain fighting the Spanish. I had seen The Adventures of Robin Hood, but never saw Flynn in anything else. Decent, but not touching the greatness of Robin Hood.

Man Hunt (1941) - Fritz Lang directed this one about a man caught attempting to assassinate Hitler, so he's released only so that the Gestapo can hunt him down.

The Shootist (1976) - John Wayne's final film, in which he ironically plays an elderly, dying gunfighter. Hip Hop group Public Enemy corrupted me from ever watching John Wayne films thanks to the lyric in "Fight the Power"

Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant shit to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Motherfuck him and John Wayne

I've watched several over the last few years and while they're not great performances, they aren't ones you want to turn off either.

Brokeback Mountain (2005) - I actually watched this on Valentine's Day as a joke. Don't get me wrong, I've always wanted to see this, but I update my Facebook and Twitter status messages with whatever movie I happened to watch, so I knew I'd get a laugh with "With today being Valentine's Day, I decided to watch a romantic western, Brokeback Mountain." Sure enough, I got people commenting.
As for the movie itself, I thought it was really good. The kissing was a little rough to watch, but the overall story was very good. Great performances by everyone involved. This should've been the Best Picture winner of 2005. Crash was gayer.

Gladiator (2000) - Never saw this until this week. I'm trying to see as many Best Picture winners, so this one was added to my list.

The Wind and the Lion (1975) - This one sounded good in the on screen guide description, but I wasn't impressed. Sean Connery plays a Moroccan leader who kidnaps an American family in Morocco. The family was just too friendly with him instead of being in fear, so it just didn't seem believable.

Moonstruck (1987) - I never thought I would ever watch this. Cher in the lead in a romantic comedy, no thanks.
TCM had it on last night, so I said fuck it, I'll watch it. What a great decision, I thought it was really good. What especially made it great was discovering Ron & Fez's origin of where the "Get me the big knife" line came from.

Secretary (2001) - James Spader in another odd sexual movie, the other being Crash, no, not the gay one, I'm talking about the one about sex with car crash victims.
This time he plays a lawyer who hires a self-cutter (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who gets off on being dominated.

Stalag 17 (1953) - Billy Wilder directed this one about american POW's who thinks one of their own is an informant. Really enjoyed this movie.

Boondock Saints 2. I had been putting it off for fear it would be nothing but fanboy service, and to my great dismay this was in fact the case. I had been looking forward to it since I first heard about it six or seven years ago. I knew it would be a let-down, but I was shocked at actually how far from a decent movie it was. If anything, it cemented for me that Julie Benz really is a FUCKING HORRIBLE actress. That god-awful fake accent took me out of the movie worse than Brad Pitt in Inglorious Basterds. Even if they had a halfway decent actress, "girl-Smecker" was a horrible character. Did she HAVE to do and act like Willam Dafoe, even down to the gloves and the earbuds while she worked?

I really loved the first movie, and that they managed to bring EVERYBODY back from the first one and still take such a large step back, I now realize that everything that I thought made the first movie o brilliant were all just luck, an accident. I love that she had to bring up Smecker's name before saying her own. To kind of let the audience know what her role was.

The cops that came back bothered me a lot. It seems like they haven't had a gig since the first Boondocks, so they were really hamming it up (one in particular).
And how about Fat Rocco. And I usually like Cliff Collins, but it was a terrible role for him

Here's what I watched this week:

Bang the Drum Slowly (1973) - Robert DeNiro as a catcher for the NY Yankees...oops, I mean the NY Mammoths who discovers he has Hodgkin's disease. I was really expecting this to be a sad movie like Brian's Song, but it wasn't. It was good, although I wasn't really buying 135 lb. DeNiro as a catcher.

Julia (1977) - Two friends since childhood meet again in Germany during WWII. One friend must help smuggle in money past the Nazi's to help the other. Pretty sure this was based on a true story.

Saturday Night Fever (1977) - I always thought this movie was just about dancing, but I was surprised to find out it wasn't. I was also shocked that this was originally an R rated film (which is the version that I watched). It's also the first American film to use the word "cunt." I really liked this one.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) - Not a sober moment in this movie. Crazy drunk from beginning to end. Good stuff!

House of Bamboo (1955) - About a group of former US soldiers on a crime wave in Tokyo, Japan. Didn't realize this was a remake until after I watched it, which kinda bummed me cause I'd much rather see originals first. The original is called The Street with No Name and came out 7 years earlier. I did like this one though. It's one of those CinemaScope color films, and as I've mentioned in earlier posts I really dig color movies from the 50s.

Hud (1962) - Paul Newman is great in this as a son who doesn't get along with his father. There's a cattle scene in this film that was great, yet tough to watch.

Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home (2007) - This is a rockumentary about a family that keeps all of their trash for 90 days just to see how much they collect.

The kind of film that mesmerizes you, sticks with you afterwards, and causes you to scour every resource around to find out how others interpret it.

As far as Michael Haneke films go, I didn't like Funny Games in either version, but this and Cache I found utterly masterful. Fantastic and tragic documentary on redemption and healing through music for a group of people that went through more atrocity than most people will ever even read about.

http://www.refugeeallstars.org/

If anyone is into Fela Kuti (Pepper mentioned seeing a play about him) and other afrobeat music, this is a must. While the music is a little less jazz-based than afrobeat, the emotion is the same. The musician's stories of what they went through during the civil war are heartwrenchingly brutal, similar to what was described in the documentary "Kassim the Dream", which I mentioned in this thread a while back. It's really hard to bitch about Xbox not letting me get games on demand after watching films like these.

Here's what I watched this week:

An American Dream (1966) - A man is accused of killing his wife, but he claims it was a suicide.
This film started strong, with a great performance by the wife, but then after her death it's really boring with a subplot of the guy being chased by the mob.

Ran (1985) - I thought I'd have to wait until later this month when TCM plays 24 hours of Kurosawa on what would be his 100th birthday (March 23), but I noticed Sundance was airing it this past week, so I recorded it.
For some reason I thought this was a much older film, but when I saw that was from 1985 then I thought it was a remake, but I was wrong. I haven't bothered to look, but I was positive that Kurosawa remade one of his films. Maybe I'm thinking of Hitchcock, cause I know for a fact that he has.
Anyway, this was a really great film. All throughout the film I was trying to figure out what the English translation of 'Ran' has to do with the title, then afterward I discovered 'Ran' is a Japanese word pronounced Ron and means revolt, which makes the title that much more understandable.
I've seen several of Kurosawa's films and am definitely looking forward to catching many more this month.

General Spanky (1936) - This is a full length Our Gang/Little Rascal's film. I had seen shorts, never knew they did features.

Sunset Blvd. (1950) - Billy Wilder is a director that I always get excited to see when I found out they're playing on TCM.
This was my first viewing of this and I thought it was great. Wilder's noir was just as good as his comedies. Amazing range.

Morituri (1965) - Apparently this was a little known film, yet the 2 leads were Marlon Brando and Yul Brynner. Yul plays a ship's captain on a voyage to deliver rubber, but Brando is blackmailed into going on that ship as a passenger and has to sabotage the mission. I thought it was decent.

King Solomon's Mines (1950) - About a woman hiring an adventurer in Africa to help find her lost husband. Brought to you in stunning Technicolor.

West Side Story (1961) - Can't believe I sat through a nearly 3 hour musical, but as silly as some of the dance/fight scenes were, it was still a fun film.

Antichrist - one of the best movies I have seen in the last couple of years. I am a big LvT fan and this is still my favorite of his. Reviews aren't getting the movie right - yes, there is a bloody DIY clitorectomy and bloody ejaculation. Yes, that was over the top and probably not needed though I didn't mind it. The gore, however, was a very small part of the movie. The rest of the movie was very interesting, intelligent story of a couple dealing with grief with a building sense of fear and dread of something dark in the outside world. I thought LvT made some powerful, visceral images that tap into a very deep primal collective fear of the woods. A couple of times in the movie I had a sense of deja vu from my own nightmares. It is a deeply disturbing film that LvT pulled from his subconscious. it might not have the audience or apprecation it deserves now but will some day.

We watched this last night, it's on Netflix streaming.

I am happy I didn't see it in a theater. At the cunny scene I had to pause it and walk around the room for a little while.

Whole thing was pretty intense.

Here's what I watched this week:

Saibogujiman kwenchana aka I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006) - I'm a big fan of the director, Chan-wook Park. He's made a couple of my favorite films, such as J.S.A.: Joint Security Area and Oldboy.
This one however I wasn't that impressed with. I think the main thing this film had going for it was the fact that South Korean pop star, Rain, was playing the male lead. I knew nothing about Rain prior to seeing this, so maybe it would've been a bigger deal had I known who he was. I did enjoy his yodeling.
The violent scenes, although brief, were a lot of fun to watch.

Rebel Without a Cause (1955) - I have always wanted to see this and finally got the chance since TCM played it during their 31 Days of Oscar month.
I had only seen James Dean in one other film, East of Eden, which I really liked, but this one is the one people think about when James Dean's name is mentioned.
Great teenage angst film!

The Devil and Miss Jones (1941) - Always knew of the porno, The Devil in Miss Jones, never did see it though, but if I ever do, now I at least have seen the film in which its title was parodied.
Nice little comedy about a rich store owner who poses as a spy employee at his store, to find out who is behind his employee's unrest.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005) - Rockumentary about a manic-depressive singer/songwriter/artist.
I first heard about Daniel Johnston in 2008 when he was on the Ron & Fez show. It was a great interview. Here it is if you'd like to hear it, http://digs.by/1fUq

An American in Paris (1951) - This musical somehow beat A Streetcar Named Desire for the Best Picture in 1951.

movie night for me....

1) Silent Hill (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384537/): What a steaming pile of shit! For something that was supposed to be scary it failed miserably. Acting was unbelievably hacky.

2) The Pentagon Papers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330760/): Actually a decent watch. James Spader and Paul Giamatti were as always great. Slow moving at parts but probably having smoked a big bowl before it started didn't help.

3) Straw Dogs (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067800/): OK but by no means Sam Peckinpah's best work. A little too heavy with the sexploitation (although Susan George had some AMAZING tits) and too light on real plot.

Here's what I watched this week:

Animal Crackers (1930) - I just started watching Marx Brothers films within the last few years and each one has been hysterical. This one is one of their best.
The only bad thing about their films is that there always seems to be a harp playing session by Harpo. It's never intended to be comical, so it just slows everything down.

It Happened One Night (1934) - I only watched this because it was the 1934 Best Picture winner. Trying to watch as many as I can, with a few that I will purposely be avoiding.

Shûbun aka Scandal (1950) - I've recorded a few Kurosawa films this month thanks to TCM playing his movies each Tuesday. I finally decided to pick one at random and watch it.
This one is about a painter and a singer secretly photographed by a tabloid. The painter then sues.
Really good film.

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) - Film noir about a married woman and her lover plotting to kill her husband.
Nice twists and turns. At one point you think the movie is ending and then another turn emerges.

Here's what I watched this week:

Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1956) - Wyatt Earp and 'Doc' Holliday have had many films made about them and I had never seen any of them, so I had no clue about their lives.
This film features Burt Lancaster as Wyatt (sans mustache, although I honestly never knew he had one until reading complaints on IMDB) and Kirk Douglas as Doc.

The Outrage (1964) - This is an American remake of Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon. I really liked Rashomon, so I feared this one wouldn't live up to my expectations. I did enjoy it though.
Before watching it I knew Paul Newman was in it, but I didn't know what role he was playing. About 30 minutes in, after the first rape scene, I realized Newman was playing the Mexican bandit. He did a great job and really fooled me.

Giant (1956) - Epic film about a cattle rancher and his family over 25 years. James Dean's final film. Long, but still decent.

Ikimono no kiroku aka I Live in Fear (1955) - Kurosawa's film about a man so terrified of a nuclear holocaust, he desperately tries to convince his family to move to Brazil.

Hour of the Gun (1967) - This is basically a sequel to Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. It's directed by the same person, John Sturges, although none of the actors reprise their roles.
Supposedly this film is more accurate about Wyatt Earp and 'Doc' Holliday. It starts right at the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, a battle which lasted about 30 seconds, although in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral film, the fight lasted 6 minutes. So this one stays true to the actual events.
James Garner plays Wyatt (with mustache) and Jason Robards as Doc.
Both films are good, but I liked this one a little more.

Desperate Journey (1942) - Errol Flynn & Ronald Reagan as downed RAF pilots in Germany who dress as Nazi's to try to fit in and escape.
Lots of great action in this.

Nevada Smith (1965) - Steve McQueen plays a half-white/half-Indian hunting down the 3 men who tortured and murdered his parents.
This film was alright, although McQueen was way too old to play the type of character this role was intended for.

I ponied up for the 3D because my kid loves that shit, but boy was it a reminder of what a con-job this 3D shit is. Avatar is the only one I've seen that looks decent too far. There were a few brief moments where they pulled off the 3D in the dragon movie, but more often than not it was like watching an animated pop-up book. Like multiple flat 2D objects but distanced from each other with 3D. I loved the 3D in Avatar, I thought it was amazing and gorgeous. Here's what I watched over the last 2 weeks:

Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) - I knew the premise of this movie was celebrities in vignettes drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes, but I had no idea it was scripted. I figured it would be shot CYE style, give the actors some topics and just riff for 10 minutes. I didn't like this at all.

War Hunt (1961) - Amazing cast in this. Not so much for acting, but what would become of several of them. You have Robert Redford and Tom Skerritt (film debuts for both), Sydney Pollack, and a very brief appearance by Francis Ford Coppola. Three of those guys went on to win Best Director Academy Awards. I liked this movie a lot.

Geuddae geusaramdeul aka The President's Last Bang (2005) - South Korean film about the assassination of President Park Chung-hee in 1979. This was pretty good.

Hang 'Em High (1968) Opening scene was great in this. Whole movie was excellent.

A Time for Killing (1967) - Civil War movie about a group of soldiers from the north going after a group from the south. The group from the south know that the war has ended, but they kill the north messenger before he can let his side know, so the war is now personal.

Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) - Courtroom drama based on the Nazi criminal war trials in 1948. Very long, but really good.

Logan's Run (1976) - Sci-fi futuristic film about a domed city where man can't live past 30, so one guy approaching 30 attempts to escape. It was decent. Costumes were a little silly. People looked like Peter Pan.

Firecreek (1967) - Western about a group of guys that wreck havoc on a small, quiet town. So the "sheraf" has to deal with them.

Here are a couple worth recommending:

In The Loop: Revisits (fictionally) the run-up to the Iraq war. I know, I know - but if you are a fan of Virus humor you'll find it hilarious. The bad guys still win but they're also the funniest. As an added bonus you also get a grown-up Anna Chlumsky who turned out very nicely indeed (contrary to what Dave scurrilously suggested on the show a few weeks ago.)

A Face in The Crowd: A late '50's movie starring Andy Griffith(!) as a right wing rabble rouser. It really shows that Glenn Beck and his ilk stole their gimmick. A shame it still works so well.

Apparently it is based on a true story that happened in Iran soon after the Islamic Revolution. Let's just say the stoning isn't of the ESD "highing" sort. It is also a useful reminder of the brutal nature of the savages still running the place over there, if you need one.

Nightmare on Elm Street '10.

As shitty as one might expect, more or less. Some of it is okay, most of it is revoltingly bad, which by nature makes it superior to the remakes of Chainsaw, Halloween and Friday, which were all revoltingly bad across the board. Jackie Earle Haley only serves as a spotlight for how good Robert Englund was as Freddy. They really screwed up on fleshing out the character's origins for how he came to be an omnipotent dream demon.

Yeah, that's what i suspected. Thanks for letting me know. I will probably not even watch it on DVD.
I watched Oceans last night. Since it is rated G I did not expect the movie to get me all upset. 1. An orca eats a fur seal 2. scenes of of birds catching and eating new born turtles as they run to the ocean for the first time 3. a sea lion on the ocean floor surrounded by garbage, including a shopping cart and assorted plastic toys
I felt so depressed after watching that movie. I'm not going to the movies again for a long long time.

The Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. Nicholas Cage was actually very good, and Eva Mendes is just gorgeous.

Kung Fu Hustle. Great, fun kung fu movie with a lot of slap stick.

Right At Your Door. Excellent thriller about a couple's situation when a dirty bomb goes off in LA. The husband seals up the house but then his wife shows up hours later as toxic dust falls like snow. Low budget, but still delivers tension.

Trying to decide what to go see tomorrow between "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", "The Secret In Their Eyes", "The Girl On The Train" or "The Good, The Bad, The Weird".

Any suggestions?

Saw Kick Ass. LOVED it. Fucking movie more then lived up to the hype.

Also finally saw A Clockwork Orange. So strange but had me thoroughly hooked.

welly welly well............. a clockwork orange? finally? that movie is a masterpiece. clockwork = mechanical, orange = orangutan. = mechanical man. some don't get it.............. make sure you do. movies used to = art.

Brazil. A lot of people told me that it's one of the best sci-fi films ever, and I just don't see it. It's pretty much set in the universe of 1984, which I found rather unoriginal and the pacing of the film is awfully slow. Everything is seemingly overdramatized and the dream sequences last forever. It wasn't terrible, I just think it wasn't great.

Saw "The Girl On The Train" today. Pretty decent movie. It's about a girl who can't help but lie all the time, and it takes a bunch of shots at the heavy handed French government and over reacting French media. Also based on something that actually happened.

Exit Through the Gift Shop.

Well deserving of it's 95% on RT. Phenomenal footage and vastly entertaining. It also poses some interesting questions on art since Warhol (but truly Duchamp).

Here's what I watched over the last 3 weeks:

The Silencers (1966) - a James Bond type rip-off from the 60's, but with gags. Kind of like Austin Powers. Dean Martin plays a super agent named Matt Helm. Gotta love a guy who has a fully stocked bar in his car, within reach of the driver's seat. Very funny scene in this film is when he has a woman with him in his car and she turns on the radio and a Frank Sinatra song is playing, Matt immediately turns the radio off and says that guy can't sing. The chick then turns the radio back on, finds a new station and there's a Dean Martin song on. Matt then proudly says "now this guy can sing."

Murderers' Row (1966) - This is part 2 of 4 in the Matt Helm series. Pretty much more of the same as the previous, including another dig at Sinatra.

Pusher II: With Blood on My Hands (2004) - I caught part 1 of this trilogy last month, so I was excited to see this sequel. I wasn't disappointed. I really liked Tonny in the first film, so it was cool to see this film completely about him.

Inland Empire (2006) - Prior to this I had only seen 3 David Lynch films, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, and Blue Velvet. It's safe to say with his films you never know what to expect besides a complete mind fuck. I'm not even going to attempt to write a summary about it cause I'm still confused by it all.

One Million B.C. (1940) - An archaeologist interprets cave drawings to tell the story about how cave people lived. Pretty cool special effects considering the year it was released.

Tora no o wo fumu otokotachi aka The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail (1945) - Kurosawa film, only 60 minutes long, about a group of men disguised as priests trying to cross a barrier. Great tension in this.

Strangers on a Train (1951) - I've seen a lot of Hitchcock films, but after seeing this one, this immediately jumped to the very top of my favorites by him. I loved this movie.

Stagecoach (1939) - Classic John Ford film about a passenger carrying stagecoach traveling through Apache territory. Thought this one was really good.

Triangle. An Australian movie that was damn good. It has a twisty plot that I have seen before in another, Spanish movie, Los Cronocrímenes, but it's done just as effectively, if not better for some harrowing scenes.

One thing, do not watch the trailer for this movie, as some of those scenes are shown, and they're better when you don't see them coming.

Last night I saw the newly restored version of Metropolis, Fritz Land's 1927 masterpiece. In 2008 a complete print was discovered in Buenas Aries, and now it's as complete as it was when it first premiered, save for about 5 minutes that couldn't be restored.

It was the first time I saw it, also the first silent film I've seen. Amazing in scope and epic in what went into creating a visionary future. The silent acting was sometimes unintentionally hilarious, but I enjoyed how I could follow the story with all music and intermittent words on the screen.

I also saw dozens and dozens of props, camera angles and scenes that other movies were inspired from this film.

It's showing at the NYC Film Forum for the next two weeks.
