Just finished "The Piano Teacher" - I'd not heard of it until Louis CK mentioned it on O&A a couple of weeks ago.

I don't even think Ron's laws on crazy pussy covers protocol on how to deal with the likes of the lead in this movie. Good flick.

If you really enjoyed The Piano Teacher look up the director, Michael Haneke, everything he does is deep stuff about characters. Always worth the watch.

I watched The Cube on Friday night. It was terrible, but I couldn't stop reading and thinking about the movie. So then we watched Cube Zero last night. The Cube was much better. The Cube had a really interesting concept, but it also had some of the worst dialog I've ever heard, and some of the worst actors ever.

Agreed - I watched The Cube about two weeks ago - I turned it off with about 30 to go. The acting and dialog was pitiful. I wanted to like it based on the bits I had seen over the last 10 or so years on TV. Ultimately I didn't care about any of the characters or what happened in the end.
Terrible.

"Just Another Love Story" - Goddamn is that Netflix recommendation system good. Based on the Netflix synopsis below I'd never have bothered with it. Really good - dark and uncomfortable.

A husband and father, Jonas (Anders W. Berthelsen) lives a quietly predictable life in the suburbs. When he inadvertently causes a car accident that leaves a young woman, Julia (Rebecka Hemse), with amnesia, he finds himself telling incredible lies to make her and her family happy. By pretending to be Julia's boyfriend, Jonas opens up a brand-new life for himself, one full of exotic and endless possibilities.

Yesterday I rewatched True Lies for the first time in like ten years. First of all it's a really goof, fun action flick for what it's worth, definitely worth a watch. But more importantly this movie has some of the best practical/non cg effects I've ever seen. The bridge scene where they shoot the rocket at the truck, and even more impressive is when Arnold is in the fucking jet flying around the building where the terrorists are hiding (which goes on for like ten minutes) is fucking awesome. I have no idea how James Cameron did any of this, is there a behind the scenes doc out there anyone's seen? It's fucking breathtaking at some points.

Redbelt was the last
movie I saw and it really captured my interest from the very beggining. In fact, I dug the movie so much that I absolutely would have started recommending it to people had the last ten minutes of the movie not completely ruined the entire experience for me. Up to that point, I was able to suspend disbelief enough to look past the idea of a handicap system that would render any competetive element completely and utterly broken even getting off the ground (bound arms in sport that focuses on grappling? And I swear I heard Couture say the word 'blindfold' too). But how that movie wrapped up completely abandoned any shred of a realistic element. Sucks too, because the movie was well acted and well directed with interesting characters before falling apart at the end.

Oh yeah, and I saw "I Love You Man" and was shocked how a movie filled with SO many funny people failed to make me laugh much.

The last 20 minutes were good, besides that a couple parts here and there, but thats it. The 2nd half of the movie seemed like he forgot he was making it look like a grainy 70's flick. And the two big dialogue scenes with the women were just boring and dragged on forever.

Julie / Julia -

The theater was packed, and I think I was the only male under the age of 40 in the room.

The Meryl Streep parts were great of course, she really got into the role, it seemed over the top at times, but maybe rightfully so since Julia Child was a tad kooky.

The Amy Adams parts weren't completely unwatchable, but were definitely the downfall. That half pretty much felt like a typical generic Katherine Heigl or Sandra Bullock corny "you go girl" movie.

Just watched Grizzly Man. I had seen parts of it but never the whole thing. I thought it was fucking awesome. As far as the Herzog not letting us hear the tape argument that Jimmy once talked about, I got the impression more that it was the woman who wouldn't give them the permission to use it, and I think him telling her to destroy it was just a personal thing for her, not for us to never hear it seeing as how she will never sign it over to anyone.
It killed me when it was revealed that they were done with their summer and had left and would have been fine but that jackass decided to fucking go back. What a lunatic he was, I do actually feel bad for him cause I think it's pretty clear the man was mentally disturbed and probably would have never made the retarded decisions he made if he had gotten some help and was maybe on some proper medication or something.

I had a triple bill today.

Taking Woodstock. Really not good. When it finally got into the actual festival and tried to be cinematic, it wasn't terrible. Lee used a lot of splitscreen ala the Woodstock film. But that wasn't enough to make it watchable.

Cold Souls. Giamatti gives a great performance but the movie is just ok. It tries to be a Charlie Kaufman movie but doesn't have his cleverness or heart.

It Might Get Loud. Fantastic doc about Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White.

I watched The Piano Teacher this weekend. Louis CK brought it up on O&A and then I saw it was Michael Haneke, who is a guy I generally like.

Really good all around. Good acting, beautiful looking, great subtext and really challenging subject wise. Haneke knows exactly how to make you so uncomfortable, I almost turned away from a scene in the movie which never happens to me.

Tristram Shandy: A Cock And Bull Story

Very funny film. This is the only imaginable way one could set the book to film. It's book that was post-modern before there was anything modern to be post about - the movie follows that logic and delivers many high-brow laughs.

Pretty funny. Not histerical which I was told. But a good guy film. I really like the chick flick "guy" movies.

This and forgetting sarah marshal have been really good for having the elements of a terrible chick flick but making a comdey for guys.

All the Real Girls. My fiery love for Zooey Deschanel has grown even more. And I'm officially a David Gordon Green fan. The movie isn't perfect, but it does kind of touch a nerve on young love pretty well.

Probably the first time Danny McBride was on screen as that character. That he's played a few times now, and I still find hilarious.

Dude, I thought the same thing.

I love Mike Judge, and all the people that were in that movie are generally hysterical. But that movie had no fucking point, or reason for existing. I don't know how he sold it to a studio. There's no high point, no problem or anything. I was really disappointed.

Every once in a while a movie comes around and makes you say "Wow, did I just watch that?"

9 Songs did that for me. It was the closest thing to porn I have ever seen in a mainstream movie ever, except unlike porn it was real. It was a film where will think about it from now on and say about other movies "Well, that was hot, but I can't capture that same high that 9 Songs gave me the first time I saw it"

It's on Netflix streaming, so go watch it.

Not what I expected. Very, very funny but kinda dark. You are essentially laughing at someone with mental issues. Damon was great, his delivery killed.

Soderberg is on a short list of best genre jumping directors ever. He makes huge movies, tiny movies, gritty dramas and wacky comedies. A Liberace biopic next. He can do anything.

The title sequences and the score felt a bit off. it was a 70's vibe for a movie that took place in the early 90's.

Antichrist - one of the best movies I have seen in the last couple of years. I am a big LvT fan and this is still my favorite of his. Reviews aren't getting the movie right - yes, there is a bloody DIY clitorectomy and bloody ejaculation. Yes, that was over the top and probably not needed though I didn't mind it. The gore, however, was a very small part of the movie. The rest of the movie was very interesting, intelligent story of a couple dealing with grief with a building sense of fear and dread of something dark in the outside world. I thought LvT made some powerful, visceral images that tap into a very deep primal collective fear of the woods. A couple of times in the movie I had a sense of deja vu from my own nightmares. It is a deeply disturbing film that LvT pulled from his subconscious. it might not have the audience or apprecation it deserves now but will some day.

Oh my god, i can't believe the trailer really did give the movie away. there is a scene of her in full Linda Blair possession and a scene of him being hurled across a room. It wasn't very good. It was way too long, and their was too much silly dancing, and "letting the music talk for us" type nonsense. I didn't hate it, cause it was a good story, and the actors were all good, but the director shit the bed.

I saw Pirate Radio and hated it. I can't stand Richard Curtis so I'm not a fair judge. My wife, though, loves his movies and is British and she hated it, too.

Kubrick: A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut

P.T. Anderson: Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood

Kubrick isn't a bad call, I still wouldn't say that those are as varied as the ones I mentioned. They are better, yes.

But definitely not PT's. They all have a similar tone and pacing (that I love and is genius) and are no way as different as the ones I mentioned.

Watched Bruno. It was funny, but not as good as Borat.

It got me thinking, though. I always thought only America realized what idiots lived in the deep South, but SBC has made fun of them in both movies. Is the whole world laughing at the southern part of America?

Some cheesey horror movie called " Santa's Slay " w/ the wrestler Goldberg.

It had a fairly decent cast ( in that they're known actors ), mostly as a goof, for a movie w/ an awful plot and premise.

It was good in an 80's horror kinda way because some of the deaths were good.

Also had Emile Deraven ( sp ?? ) from Lost so that earned it some points that even having James Caan and Fran Drescher couldn't cost it.

After an all day marathon of Law & Order and then a nap my wife and I watched " Four Christmases " and then " Slackers ".

" Four Christmases " was the usual funny Vince Vaughn movie.

" Slackers " was awful.

The cast was awful, the plot was awful oh and the cast was awful.

The Proposition. Saw it because a review of The Road claimed it was an homage to Blood Meridian (McCarthy's BEST). After watching it, it's one of my favorite films of all time. Even though the characters in the movie (at least one in particular) are monumentally less evil than their counterparts in Blood Meridian, it still stays faithful to the themes and ideas presented by Blood Meridian. Really, really good watch especially if you have read the book.

Kassim the Dream, a documentary about the Ugandan boxer. Just fucking heartwrenching. He was abducted from a schoolhouse at age 6 by the rebel army and forced to fight and kill until he was 12 years old, when the rebels seized power of Uganda. He eventually defected to the US as a young adult while on the Ugandan boxing team, and became very successful as a boxer, eventually winning a title. The ghosts of his past always haunt him, and the film culminates with him receiving a pardon from the president of Uganda, who was the leader of the rebel army that kidnapped him. The pardon allows him to return to the country for a short visit. After visiting several locations from his past, he makes his way to his village and reunites with his grandmother, and visits his father's grave. The story is tragic, yet stays somewhat uplifting. The short segment when he returns to his village is amazing as you see all of Kassim's emotions explode out of him in one of the saddest moments I have ever seen in a documentary.

I just watched the new Star Trek movie. It was okay, but I wasn't crazy about how the charicter development played out. It worked but seems like it was focused on people who may never have seen the series like I did. Spocks relationship with Uhura was one, in the series, the only hint of Spock having any relationship was with Nurse Chapel (Gene Roddenberrys wife). Uhura and Kirk had more tension and an actual kissing scene which bothered people at the time. But I guess because Uhura and Spock had such a cult status , particularly in the black community, it only makes sence to involve them like that. I may need to watch it again because I don't remember where the red matter came from or why such a large amount was needed when one drop was enough to turn a planet into a singularity.

I loved the movie. I thought the casting was superb, and the story was typical star trek. I hope they produce a few more with this cast.

I thought it stunk. Dimitri Martin was good for his first role, and the folks they got to play his parents were good. But it was way too long. And Emile Hirsch was embarrassing as a Vietnam Vet doing his "flashback".
And I watched Thirst, which was great.
