I'm convinced flopping is taught by every coach throughout this tournament. I've yet to see a team not flop for a call and it's tough to watch.

Yah I hate that sport too...it's a close battle of too much meaningless scoring and theatrics versus too little scoring or even actual shots on goals and theatrics.
Here's my take on 90+ minutes of fucking soccer.

i doubt it's the kind of thing you can learn to appreciate over a couple games in the summer. basically, the more you watch, you can understand the tempo of play, what moments are actually tense or dangerous for a team, the importance of set pieces (corners, free kicks, etc), what a great save looks like, what good defending looks like. of course, goals add excitement (you should have watched germany for a good attacking display), but the real drama is in watching people dribble cleverly, make long, accurate passes, movement off the ball, outsmarting the defenders, etc. so far, argentina and germany have been the most impressive offensively, so watch them if you like goals. some games are boring, yes, but some basketball games are boring even if the score is in the 90's. soccer does require patience but it rewards it as well. and you don't have to have charles barkley selling you a taco every 5 minutes. only ONE COMMERCIAL BREAK PER GAME (i.e. halftime)

Ive hated him since the first game I saw him play. The thing I hate the most is, rather than just make the play, take the shot, make the pass, etc, he always tries to make it fancier than it has to be. Even just in the first half of this game, there were a couple open guys he missed cause he tried to back heel it or flick it on. Just make the fuckin pass you jerkoff

There was just a prime example of why vuvzelas suck in this Chile/Honduras game now. They showed a shot of the Chilean fans dancing and obviously chanting and singing, and the announcer said "The Chilean fans are in full voice", but all I can hear is that damn buzz, those horns being blown by people who probably couldn't care less who actually wins this game.

NFL Football game averages 11 minutes of total action.
That's 2.75 min per quarter.
NFL Football game on TV averages 3hr broadcast.
That's 2hr 49min of huddles, commercials and yapping bobble-heads.
I think to fix this soccer needs more arrogant jack-offs yapping non stop and more penis/beer commercials to make it more appealing to the American people.

They've got:
Spain - 24 shots to Swiss - 8
Spain - 8 shots on goal to Swiss - 3
Spain - 12 Corner kicks to Swiss - 3
Spain - 12 Free kicks to Swiss - 3
Spain had possession 63% to Swiss 37%

There was definitely a bit of contact, although the striker really sold it well and kind of dragged his foot. i wouldn't call it a dive, although it was minimal contact and it really is a shame cuz that goalie was performing well up until then.

The striker "selling" it had nothing to do with the red card. When I first saw it I thought it was a bad call but after seeing the replay I agreed with the ref. The goal keeper came nowhere near the ball. It was a good call.

Yes they are, it's impossible to avoid those rebounds as a defender. The only way is to close in on the opposition as fast as possible, but that leaves the defender vulnerable to being rounded. And once the ball is in the air, it's a split second - no time to avoid it.

How about catching the ball instead of deflecting it back where a rebound shot is possible. Not saying it's easy but it separates the good keepers from the great.

Not true, snoogans. Yellow in first and third and you are suspended for first game of knockout round. BUT, if you have one yellow thru the group stage it gets removed at start of knockout stage.
Apparently UEFA also resets yellows after the quarterfinals now, but I don't know if FIFA has followed suit.

i was just reading about the offsides rule. i think i get it now. seems like there is a gray area for the ref's discretion- when an off. player isn't making a play on the ball or the goal, he might not call it. was this the case? or was it just a missed call?
edit-also, is the offside trap common?

yea its pretty common. and yea to be offside you have to be involved in the play
also there has to be more guys behind for D. But it includes the goalie. Its confusing but basically if 2 players are ahead of 1 defender, and the goalie moves out past those 2 guys, they are now offsides, cause its 2 guys vs only 1 defender. But obviously the goalie doesnt count when its 1 guy and just him. Its a weird rule but i sorta get it, if the goalie is behind them its technically 2 and 2 so its good. If he traps them then its 2 vs 1 and becomes offside

Associated Press
JOHANNESBURG -- Police say a South African man who wanted to watch a World Cup match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family in the northeastern part of the country.
David Makoeya, a 61-year-old man from the small village of Makweya, Limpopo province, fought with his wife and two children for the remote control on Sunday because he wanted to watch Germany play Australia in the World Cup. The others, however, wanted to watch a gospel show.
"He said, 'No, I want to watch soccer,'" police spokesman Mothemane Malefo said Thursday. "That is when the argument came about.
"In that argument, they started assaulting him."
Malefo said Makoeya got up to change the channel by hand after being refused the remote control and was attacked by his 68-year-old wife Francina and two children, 36-year-old son Collin and 23-year-old daughter Lebogang.
Malefo said he was not sure what the family used to kill Makoeya.
"It appears they banged his head against the wall," Malefo said. "They phoned the police only after he was badly injured, but by the time the police arrived the man was already dead."
All three were arrested Sunday night, but Lebogang was released on $200 bail Tuesday, Malefo said. The other two are still being held in custody.
Malefo said the mother and son will reappear in the local Seshego Magistrates Court on July 27.
"He was always a happy man, never violent," Makoeya's nieces, Miriam and Anna, told the Daily Sun newspaper. "On Saturday, we saw him the last time at a funeral."
The World Cup, being played in Africa for the first time, started Friday and runs through July 11.
Boy did he pick a bad game to be killed over...

well obviously a draw is the best but im gonna assume for now england wins. 4 slovenia 4 we have 2 algeria 0.
If we beat algeria that gives us 5. If any team wins that england slovakia game we are in, and if they draw, since we won vs algeria, we would win the goal differential im pretty sure against one of them. So if we win, its like 95% we are in
I think I figured it right
ozzie
06-18-2010, 08:16 AM
Exactly. The USA isn't out of this yet, but it could come down to goal differential.
Both the USA/Algeria game and the Eng/Slovenia games will be played at the same time next Wednesday.
They won't know exactly what they'll need to advance, other than win, and win BIG!
I don't see any scenario where the US can not at least tie for 2nd with a win next week.

Slovenia leads the US by a goal right now. If you're assuming an Eng win today, they would lead the US too.
So if the three teams end all end up with 5 pts as you described in your scenario, the US would need to count on beating Algeria by at least 2 goals to ensure they'd advance.
What's the next tie-breaker after goal differential?
Head to head wouldn't matter in this case, because we're assuming an Eng/Slv draw, and the US already has draws against both.

I commend to you this blog posting by Joe Posnanski on CNNSI.com, about how the US's comeback against Slovenia could have been that electrifying moment that really made Americans love soccer, and it was blown by an incompetent ref who made an awful call he refuses to explain. He starts by talking about a friend of his from England who was turned into a lifelong baseball fan when the first baseball game she ever attended happened to be Nolan Ryan's 7th no hitter.
There was no fluke in this comeback. The United States team, facing all those sports death clichés — back against the wall, everything to lose, on the brink — played a magnificent half of soccer and had done something transcendent. Yes, this was Nolan Ryan’s seventh no-hitter… you didn’t have to know soccer, appreciate soccer, understand soccer or even like soccer to be in the moment.
Only the winning goal was disallowed by Koman Coulibaly. And nobody knew why. Nobody. They showed the replay on television again and again… there was clearly no offside on the play. There was no foul — and if there was any foul it had to be on Slovenia. There was nothing to call. There was nothing but a brilliant goal. But the brilliant goal was disallowed anyway. Donovan would say after the game that the players asked Coulibaly for the simplest thing: Just tell them the call. Just tell them WHY he had disallowed the goal. Donovan would say that Coulibaly refused.
When you are watching a sport that you don’t often watch, things happen that you don’t quite understand. Why didn’t that play count? Oh, the offensive lineman was holding. Why was that basket disallowed? Oh, that guy was standing in the lane for three seconds. Why was that home run taken away? Oh, the umpire said it went foul. This happens in every sport.
But what made Coulibali’s Call-of-Folly so maddening is that even soccer experts could not tell us why it happened. Even an honest bad call — even Jim Joyce’s imperfect game call, for instance — is something digestible. He thought the guy was safe. OK. But this… what did he see? What mistake was made? Can a referee simply disallow a goal for fuzzy reasons that only he seems to know?
The world has grown used to the foggy quirks of soccer — extra time, diving, stretchers for players who immediately run back out on the pitch, calls made without explanation. But most of us are not used to these things. And, for so many, this was a lousy introduction to soccer’s whims.
I think this World Cup has not been a good introduction to soccer for American fans. Boring 0-0 ties, vulvzelas blaring constantly, and now one of the great screwjobs in sports history. I can't imagine that even experienced fans like this World Cup much. This is not the showcase FIFA wanted.

Perhaps it was the jackass ref's way of taking back the gift we got from England in the first match.
You sir, are a giant bag of douche.

If you're going to a game for the first time, you've usually picked a team to root for. If you were rooting for the Rangers, that's a good result, stop acting like obstinate douche.

Well, don't go so far that you score and actually win this. But go!

England's in real danger of not advancing from the group if this result stands. I think Slovenia can definitely beat them.

I don't see how Algeria winning hurts the US chances of advancing.
I've been rooting for them to pull the upset all afternoon!

Yea, if we win we are in if Algeria had won anyway

Haha! Well, that simplifies things a bit.
A US win over Algeria, and they advance. Period.
No "goal differential" or tie breakers.
It won't matter what happens with England/Slovenia.
Win and you're in!

Are you forced to?
no excuses now...beat Algeria and move through. Forget the screwjob, forget about goal differential...none of it matters.
As for England...couldn't happen to a nicer team. Just goes to show chemistry means something in soccer.

Here is a summary of scenarios from this (http://g.sports.yahoo.com/soccer/world-cup/news/playing-out-the-scenarios--fbintl_ro-scenario061810.html) article:
1. ) U.S. beats Algeria on Wednesday and we advance no matter what.
2.) U.S. draws with Algeria --
A.) If England loses to Slovenia, we're in.
B.) England draws with Slovenia but scores less than 2 more goals than we score against Algeria, we're in.
C.) England draws with Slovenia but scores at least 2 more goals than we score, we're out.
3.) U.S. loses to Algeria, we're out.

I have no idea what to expect in the England/Slovenia game....Slovenia looked sloppy against Algeria, they looked fantastic in the first half against the U.S. and awful in the second...they're tough to get a handle on.
That said, there's absolutely nothing in these last two matches that would suggest to anyone that England is ready to breakout and take that match other than reputation. They've played like shit in two games.
Algeria can't score, but they move the ball and get back pretty well. If the U.S. can avoid the dreaded first 15 minutes goal, they should be able to at least eek out a 1-0 victory.
But they've got to start better. I wouldn't be surprised at anything with this group at this point.

Can we not give up a goal in the first 5-15 goddamn minutes this freaking time?

Here's the thing, a win here and we were already in and probably getting the better draw for the second round. It still DOES matter in my mind. Awful bs call. He and Joyce should vacation together in Hatti.
