Here's the thing, a win here and we were already in and probably getting the better draw for the second round. It still DOES matter in my mind. Awful bs call. He and Joyce should vacation together in Hatti.

Eh good point, but it's in the past now.

What made it worse is the players said he didn't even explain WHAT THE CALL WAS.

Which leads me to believe that it was an Anti American douche call, and FiFA should fire him immediately.

yea but you cant say that about the draw. For example, the second team in our group plays the first place finisher of germany's group. Except now, that probably isnt going to be Germany. So that draw shit doesnt always matter cause the other teams play like shit too. Some team that won their group may have to play germany, one may have to play spain, one will either have to play portugal or brazil. That finishing shit doesnt always matter. Just advance

the only way thats true if it was anti american over a bet and he was paid off. There is no way some guy from Mali gives a fuck whether the US beats Slovenia. I just cant see it having anything to do.

That said, he was awful all game, so it coulda been him being pissed at us for whining.

You say that like you actually know. Come on man, human ALWAYS have bias and some actually let it effect their judgments. I'm not saying it's the case here, but that guy surely hasn't explained his call at this point in ANY language.

Also, of course I fucking know match ups can go both ways. The bottom line is the US would have "just advanced" already if they weren't robbed, and now there is a decent shot they don't or get into some fucking CRAZY tie-breakers. One in which it may come down to a fucking draw sticks scenario. Just win against Algeria, I get that. However, England couldn't make that happen so I'm not convinced it's some easy assignment.

thats why i added the part about him might having something against the players. My point was I cant believe he did it cause he hates the USA unless it was just him hating the players or something the players did.

algeria couldnt beat Slovenia, and we basically did.

Basically, England could be Algeria, they just played like shit, way worse than they played against us. Just happens that way. But then again, USA could also take a shit for a half again and fuck themselves

edit: Also, the US ahave proved when they decide to play, they are good enough to beat anyone. They beat spain 2-0 and then were up 2-0 over brazil at half before they decided at half that they had won.

Algeria is not as good as us. If we lose, a big part is on us

I've watched the replay over and over. Probably 20 times or more.
There was NO REASON for that whistle. I know what's done is done, but still. A win is 3 pts. and easily would have moved us to the next round.

This is not the first time a ref has decided history.

I'm just stunned that refs don't have to give any explanation of their calls, not even who a foul was on. I mean, I'm used to Ed "Guns" Hochuli giving a lecture after every penalty he calls in the NFL. Just imagine if he threw a flag, and then refused to say what it was about. People would go apeshit.

It just seems like allowing a ref to keep his reasons for a call secret is a way to let a dirty ref get away with it. If you don't know what he's calling, it's a little harder to prove he's wrong. Though in this case, it was plainly obvious nothing at all happened

It depends.

I just like seeing these European powerhouses taking it on the chin...France is in deep trouble, England as well. Italy not getting three points here would put some pressure on them. Greece is in deep trouble. Germany has to sweat out the next match. Spain has to dig out...

The World Cup format lends itself to great underdog team stories and to see some of these powerhouses go down means you'll get some great stories.

And anything that opens the door for Team USA, I'm all for.

I thought you were pulling for the US?

Anyway, is it me or are there ALOT more upsets in this World Cup so far then in the past? K.C. pointed out most of them. I guess if most of the big teams survive it doesnt get noticed as much.

And STOP about the flopping. Please. EVERY team out there does the same shit. Nelson from NZ got a yellow card for that bullshit at the end of the game. They all do it. Lets not pretend its an Italian thing.

As far as rooting for the underdog, I kind of see it but I look at it another way. Ive always rooted for Italy in the World Cup. If they play the US, im rooting for the Azzurri. But when theyve lost to teams like Brazil or Germany, it didnt bother me as much as losing to a South Korea. For the same reason. To me its like rooting for the Marlins over the Red Sox in the World Series. Or the Predators over the Maple Leafs in hockey. It doesnt seem right because you know it just means so much more to one group of people then the other.

They need to run up the score every chance they get if they want to make sure they advance.

There's a good chance this group could end up with 3 teams at 2 - 1 (assuming the Swiss can beat Honduras and Spain takes care of Chile)

france needs what, to win big and have the other game end in a tie?

ozzie
06-22-2010, 04:03 AM
france needs what, to win big and have the other game end in a tie?

No, a draw between Mexico and Uraguay puts them both into the next round.

They need for Mexico to win, and then to somehow make up the 5 goal differential between them (France, currently -2) and Uraguay (+3).

The games will be played at the same time today, so France won't know exactly what they'll need to do going into it, except to try to win by a big a margin as possible, and hope Mexico can rout Uraguay.

Mexico has to know that a one-goal win or even a draw puts them into the next round, so France shouldn't count on Mexico running up the score.

It's a real longshot, especially with all the chaos surrounding this team.

But then again, I thought the same thing for the US chances of advancing in the Confederations cup last year, and everything fell into place on the last day for them.

ozzie
06-22-2010, 06:09 AM
One of the guys doing comments on the ESPN Gamecast (can't get ESPN3 here) was implying that there could be a conspiracy between Mexico and Uraguay to play to a draw so that both advance.

Anyone watching that match? Do either look like they're not actively trying to score?

There was talk of this beforehand, so it may not be anything he's seeing on the field. It comes up anytime this scenario arises. I don't think they actually plot something out, bit both teams know they don't need to win, and that their opponent is in the same boat.

And I knew a tie in this game would eliminate France, I don't know why I got all confused this morning.

This has broken perfectly for the US.

They definitely need to win the group tomorrow....If that happens, then they have a good shot of facing Ghana or Serbia in the Round of 16, and then the winner of Uruguay/South Korea in the quarterfinals.

That is about as easy a path as you could ask for to the semifinals.

If they were to finish #2 in the group though, then they likely will play Germany in the Round of 16 and if they were fortunate enough to win that, the winner of Argentina/Mexico.

So winning the group is gigantic.

So what we need to pull for:
-U.S. win over Algeria by two goals.
-Slovenia/England tie

OR

-U.S. win over Algeria
-England win over Slovenia
-Bigger margin of victory in the U.S. win

And for good measure we want to see:
-Anything but a Ghana/Germany tie coupled with a Serbia/Australia tie or Australia win (that scenario would ensure Ghana wins the group, Germany finishes second, meaning U.S. vs. Germany...we want Germany to win the group or Germany to be out).

The U.S. has a great chance to get on the easy track tomorrow, but they have to win first.

K.C.
06-22-2010, 03:21 PM
The ideal way Group D could break for the U.S. would be Ghana beating Germany and Australia beating Serbia.

That means Ghana would win, and the U.S. would play Australia if the U.S. won Group C, and then the Uruguay/South Korea winner

However, like I said, anything that doesn't end with them playing Germany is a win...Germany is still the best team of that group by far, regardless of what actually happens tomorrow.

The emergence of the ’soccer mom’ in the 1990s wasn’t really just a ‘pop culture cliche buzzword’–it was the bond that was formed between a mother and a son after the downfall of the Babyboomer Father Figure. Mothers and sons shared long drives to the outskirts of the suburbs every weekend to play in meaningful soccer teams. For many American bros, the first spirit of ‘true bro’ was born on ‘the pitch’ [via the 'soccer field']."

so which is the better game to watch right now?

IF I could watch... I'd have to go with Germany vs. Ghana. Brother against brother in that one (Kevin-Prince Boateng for Ghana against Jerome Boateng for Germany)

Winner of that one wins the group. Probably more aggressive play in that one.

The socceroos are pretty much out of it, although there's probably a better chance the US will face Serbia, if you want to "scout" their next opponent.

Especially if Serbia goes up a goal in their game. If Serbia wins, then Germany HAS to win in order to advance.

Ghana goes through with a draw against Germany.

How is that possible? What are the citizenship rules?

How is that possible? What are the citizenship rules?

They're half brothers, both having the same father, who was from Ghana. Both were born in Germany, but KP applied for a Ghana passport so he could play for his father's home country.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Boateng Brothers here. (http://news.myjoyonline.com/sports/201004/44880.asp)

If one of your parents are born in another country than the one you currently are a citizen of then you are allowed to play for that country.

When did the Brits start ending every sentence in a question?

"The Germans always prevail, don't they?"

"That was a great shot, no?"

"We're having a great day of competition, aren't we?"

I think Ricky Gervais started it.

If you have ESPNU change to it during the half. The longest game in tennis history is going on. They are at 53-53 in the 5th set.

Longshot, but looks like they're going for it.

The camera during the game and in all the replays they are showing of the goal cuts away to an Algerian player as Tim Howard throws the ball and the run starts. Sometime today on ESPN they showed a different angle that showed Howard actually throwing the ball. That motherfucker threw the ball almost half way down the field and hit Donovan in stride. The ball didn't hit the ground until maybe 10 yards before the center line. Fucking amazing.

Another thing I just noticed: If England can somehow beat Germany and Argentina beats Mexico they will meet in the quarterfinals. How awesome would that be with Maradona on the sideline?

Does anyone have audio of the live calls, either radio or TV? Espn is showing the goal but not the call. I want to hear the call, I was on a conference when the goal happened so I was watching but not listening.

As amazing as the Goal of the Century is, gotta think Landycakes deal is on that level too, from Howard hitting him on the fly to putting home Dempsey's shot, given the importance and the enormous pressure.

A. Landon's goal is not on that ridiculous level.

B. You calling him "Landycakes" is not only obscenely gay, but just shows your lack of soccer knowledge by insulting the best soccer player America has ever developed.

Now I'm even more angry when I think about how stupid it is to compare Landon's rebound clean up to Maradona's "Goal of the Century".

Seriously?
