The best player the US ever developed is Tony Meola!!!

That right there could be even gayer than Landycakes..

Now I'm even more angry when I think about how stupid it is to compare Landon's rebound clean up to Maradona's "Goal of the Century".

Seriously?

Do mountains of cocaine count as a PED?

I'm not talking of the skill of goal, I'm talking about the importance.

A. Landon's goal is not on that ridiculous level.

B. You calling him "Landycakes" is not only obscenely gay, but just shows your lack of soccer knowledge by insulting the best soccer player America has ever developed.

In terms of the quality of the goal, not even close...that was burying one off a broken play...it was heads up and great awareness by Donovan, but not some amazing feat....now, in terms of meaningfulness for American soccer, it's definitely huge...

Like I said, everything has broken right...they have the opportunity to get to the semifinals of the World Cup without playing a team ranked higher than them to get there.

And if they can get there and finish 3rd or 4th in the World Cup, that is a gigantic boost to US soccer...nevermind if they were to pull off a gigantic upset and get to the finals (not likely, they'll have to go through Brazil most likely to get there).

A. Landon's goal came in bracket play against Algeria.

B. The Goal of the Century/Hand of God duo came in the semi-finals of the World Cup against England.

Stop it.

The talent gap definitely isn't as big as it used to be.

They showed they can hang with Brazil in the Confed Cup, but they also showed that when Brazil is on, the US defenders can be exploited very easily.

So I think they'd have to play their top game and get a little bit lucky to beat them. It's not as crazy as it once sounded, but it's still far-fetched.

It's completely conceivable this team goes out and gets rolled by Ghana on Saturday, although I don't think this Ghana team is as good as the '06 team that beat them...they seem to have big time trouble finishing goals....two goals in group play doesn't cut it.

The US showed they can score...as long as they avoid the early cheap one, they shouldn't have a tough time with them.

heck, the us played decently against the dirty brasilians in 1994 and the germans in 2002 in the knockout stages. they definitely seem to elevate their play after the pool play is over.

How did Alexi Lalas become the American voice on USA soccer?

His arrogance and lack of insight is only surpassed by his obvious animus towards Landon Donovan and this US squad. Jealous prick.

Lalas found it necessary to slam Donovan for having a rather uninspired match versus Algeria, but grudgingly acknowledged that he somehow managed to step up at the end.

The moment where Lalas should have embraced this seminal moment in US soccer history, he found it necessary to look at the glass half empty.

you fucking, contrary asshole.

Uninspired? Donovan ran his ass off the entire time and was continuously marked by 2 defenders twice his elf-like size. The only US player working harder than Donovan was Michael Bradley. God bless them both. Donovans' seemingly lack of emotion at the end of the game was primarily because the guy had just SPRINTED for 92 minutes

But Lalas would not understand this as he was a slow, dirty, plodding central defender that routinely gave up soft goals during his less than illustrious career, and only ran to the midfield on occasion. I say on oaccasion because he was so slow, he had to play low pressure in order not to get beat on the counter attack.

He is a jealous, ginger stick man with silly sideburns. I would rather watch Telemundo than listen to this jabroni. He looks like a 1960's brylcream commercial.

Furthermore,

The only thing Lalas contributed to US soccer was having long hair, a straggly goatee, and photographed playing the guitar. Fucking douche bag.

You've got some quality, up and coming insightful soccer minds such as ex US international Kyle Martino or even dare I say Eric Wynalda (when he is not pain medication, don't make you a bad person), that should have been given a chance, not this jerk. Where is Wynalda? Has he alienated the entire soccer community?

For me, put Wynalda and Tommy Smythe in the booth. Now that's entertainment with great insight.

Somebody put Lalas where he belongs, with the fishes.

I have the feeling that if Donovan hadn't come streaking out of nowhere to put that rebound away, it would have been almost a deathblow to soccer gaining mass acceptance in the US. I mean, it would have ended up that some incompetent ref fucked us out of the World Cup with a call he doesn't have the stones to explain. And then that's followed up by the US going out in a 0-0 tie.

There's been a lot of ammo in this World Cup for the haters to keep on hatin': 0-0 draws, horrible (if not corrupt) refs, and the vuvuzelas. Oh, the fucking vuvuzelas. But Landycakes showed America, in one moment, why the rest of the world puts up with this shit. That was a magical moment, one of the most stunning moments I've seen in any sport, and if you can't feel that, then I guess you shouldn't bother trying to watch soccer anymore.

I must admit, if the USA had been robbed one more time I was finished with this sport. It is a corrupt, poitical, mess that lacks integrity. It requires teams to play twice as hard to get the result they deserved.

Yeah, it doesn't sound complementary in any sense -- it sounds like a slam on him for being soft, lazy perhaps, lax. Which, judging by his performance so far, he definitely is not.

I think people trying to name Landon's clean-up goal and compare it to huge goals in history just shows how big and important this goal was for the US.

Well, not in terms of absolute quality, I suppose, but without that goal, the impression that the biggest country in the world FIFA has yet to win over of soccer is "This is a game where no one scores full of refs looking to fuck America any way they can because they hate us."

It would have been an utter disaster for US soccer if he hadnt made that goal and the US had been eliminated on a 0-0 tie.

Come on, fuck this "real boost for US soccer" shit. I've been hearing this for three fucking decades now and it's all the same outside of the influx influence by immigrants. I'm sorry, 4th or 14th it's all the same. You like the sports you like, especially when playing. If anything, it's a good year for our program and that's it. Soccer is still soccer here, not the NFL and not the MLB. If anything, it'll pass out hockey simply bc of the investment/social economic issue.

However, I just don't hang on a win being so important on a world stage. It sure as hell didn't happen in 1980 for US hockey or ice dancing pairs with that hot Tanith Belbin chick either. If the sports (not that ice dancing really counts in my mind) get any boost, it's temporary and minor. Kids are fickle and will eventually just be led by their parents like most. Hence football, basketball and baseball at this point.

Let's see how this happens:

Snoogans, who basically flips out over ANY posting mistake on this board and gets upset by the littlest stuff, thinks that Donovan's nickname is made up by me.

He's proven wrong.

So I'm guessing this turns into a 45-minute phone call with Spoon, with Snoogans all sensitive about words on the internet when he's trying to pull the tough guy act, ending with him sobbing how no one loves him and Spoon whispering "I know, I know.. it'll be OK".

They then flip this into how I said I was some sort of huge soccer fan when I said no such thing; I'm a less than casual fan who played when I was little and watched World Cup with my brother.

So Spoon and Snoogans turn this into a huge thing because I used a word that has been used to describe Donovan before and it launches into personal attacks.

Secondly, I never called Snoogans a fraud. I was busting his chops because I thought he would have known the nickname. He went from zero to attack mode in about 30 seconds, so what did he expect was going to happen.

I'm slowly beginning to realize why people don't like posting that much here anymore.

Don't know if anyone pointed this out already, but Mexico has a crazy rough group. If they get by Argentina they play the winner of Germany and England.

Also, someone posted about European powers flopping out of the tourney, but other than Italy and France (admittedly huge) they've all played about where you'd expect. Germany lost a game they were a man down for over half of, but still won their group. And for all the talk of England playing poorly they still were a late Donny-cakes goal from winning their group as well.

I get what you're saying, but I think you misunderstand my point.

I have no expectation Soccer will ever be as big as the NFL or MLB in this country...those are our national games....it certainly can grow to the point where it's as big as the NBA and NHL.

Soccer has always had a lot of obstacles in this country....for one the country didn't have a legitimate club league until MLS started in 1996 and for the most part, the first 10 years or so of MLS play was awful, you couldn't find matches on TV, and it was tough to even follow local teams week to week.

Only in the last few years has MLS started to up its game in terms of becoming a more respectable club league.

People on the fringe who don't really pay attention get into the World Cup and the further the U.S. goes in it, the more Americans get hooked into it.

That creates a bounce in interest for the sport for a short period of time...you'll have a certain number of people who watched the World Cup who will take a peak at MLS who have never really checked it out before.

And ultimately, that's where Soccer will succeed or fail in the country, through MLS...but the better the U.S. does, the more people who will take a peak based on the World Cup high. The more people who take a peak, the better chance they have of building a bigger audience for soccer in this country.

Now whether they retain any of that interest...depends on how MLS continues to build their product.

On paper this should be a walk in the park for USA Ghanas goals have all come from penalties I think so far. They have difficulty breaking a defense down and play with one big man up front who doesn't get much service. To the best of my knowledge they haven't scored in open play yet in the world cup.

Expect a very physical game however. They aren't afraid to get stuck in. Should be a really good game.

I agree on the yellow card rule needing adjustment, especially when they hand them out for farting on someone and people dive all over. In my mind, they should have a hard rule against diving to clean this sport up.

Another rule I'd like, and I'm sure soccer purists will take issue with it, is the offside rule. It's so iffy and open for argument throughout the game it needs to be addressed. Perhaps a simple zone to gain the line as in hockey in the offensive zone. After that, it's on the D to be there, if not, their fault. By this I mean the attacking team needs to gain something like third or fourth field of the attacking zone onsides and from there it's all good. No more calls one way or another bc they simply can step up all the time and make a play offside. I absolutely HATE the way the rule impacts the offense and game overall. I admittedly know little about the game, but to me I think the offside rule as it stands is awful and annoying.

thats such a shame. USA had an awesome tournament and are out by such a narrow margin. There was some piss poor defending on both goals but other than that you showed brilliant spirit and have lots to be proud of I reckon.

Bring on tomorrow now. Hope We don't suffer the same fate as you guys have but have a feeling the Germans are going to shut up shop and stop us scoring :glurps:

Clark was the guy who fucked up on the first goal?

The OT one was the bocenegra or something right?

Findley's did nothing either and Bradley started him too. Gomez was their best striker and barely played. Even Buddle showed more than Findley. What good was Findley's pace when he couldn't do shit anytime he got behind the defense? He barely got behind the D anyway.

America was at it's best when they were aggressive and attacked and every game Bradley loaded up the starting lineup with mediocre D. As soon as he moved to a single striker with our great midfielders picking up the attack we were at our best. It's just frustrating to look back on. Our strength was our midfield and we only used it when we were behind.

Clark started at midfield, and made the awful turnover.

Bocanegra misplayed that long dump in, in OT that led to the goal.

Other than that, the U.S. played fairly well on defense. Demerit came up big on a few occasions.

Englands D has been ravaged with injuries. But that tends to happen when your country can't produce top flight goalies and your defenseman are ancient or spend too much time "rogering".

If those goals weren't both quick counter-attacks it would be one thing. But they were both the result of England pressing offensively to get back a goal they already scored.

The one thing I did notice in the WC is that outside of the US, most teams are very homogeneous. This England team is the only other team with a nice mix of players (Germany a little bit), while the asian teams seemingly NEVER have anything but other asians. What does that mean "the refs have to be accountable" ? What could they possibly do after missing such an obvious call as that.

If they won't use technology and replays, FIFA needs to at least have someone whose only job is to watch the goal line.
