I would like to know the Fox News policy on calling someone a "socialist little faggot." I long for more debates that involve that awesome phrase.
You can find, or engage is similarly awful debates like this on any Fark thread in the politics or business section. I made the mistake once of engaging someone on there who was preaching false "facts" and promptly got told I'm a "freeper".

I can't watch Fox news for more than a minute.
What is saddening is that it is often the highest rated.
That is misleading. It pushes an agenda, hard right and vitriolic. All the other stations, cable or broadcast, are more middle and less antagonistic. So, they compete with each other for the same audience, while Fox is the only channel for people who enjoy abusive angry condescending hosts (I know the other channels have one or two, but nothing that compares to Hannity, Bill O', et al.)
The way it presents the news or its opinions is so simple that it attracts people who like simple answers. The way O'Rielly has the bullet points next to him as he speaks. It gives people a simple binary out look on the issues. Terrorism- bad, taxes- bad, immigration- bad, killing foreigners- good, torture- good. Little thinking needed, which is comforting, which is what most of the higher rated shows are, whether they are comedies, dramas, or reality. People look for simple answers to complex problems and Fox, not too unlike most news, provides them.
hanso
06-14-2009, 12:11 PM
That talking points thing is used on the Steve Colbert show.
He is doing a persona of O'Rielly. The whole show is a mockery of it.
Thats why I like it so much along with Jon Stewart.
Outside of your local news, to me these "news" shows should not get one worked up 24/7.
I used the remote for directv to see what show are most folks watching at any givin time to see the ratings btw.

FOX rules for the simple fact that all the other cable news channels combined, cannot come close to matching the dominance of FOX and it drives them crazy. I'm not saying that being #1 in ratings means being the best in terms of content or correct information but rather the effect that the ratings have on all the other Wacko leftists channels makes for interesting comparisons of what is being reported on a daily basis. If you click on Olberman, Hardball or Maddow, they are all basically infomercials for FOX and at least half of their collective programming time is dedicated to talking about FOX, hosts on FOX, what FOX is doing and how much FOX is awful. I really do take delight in seeing how mad these no-life experience, mushy headed dolts can get when they know that well informed Americans trust the FAIR and unbalanced opinions expressed on FOX.

Fox News is number 1 because instead reporting boring shit like news, they just make up news stories about "liberals" destroying the world and how tea parties will help save the world. And they make sure to have the best and most insightful people on, like Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, and Jonah Goldberg, true fair and balanced reporting on how socialists are taking over the country.

So today on Fox News, a frothy little discussion on how people in relationships live longer took a very weird turn.
[Host Brian] Kilmeade and two colleagues were discussing a study that, based on research done in Finland and Sweden, showed people who stay married are less likely to suffer from Alzheimer's. Kilmeade questioned the results, though, saying, "We are -- we keep marrying other species and other ethnics and other ..."
At this point, his co-host tried to -- in that jokey morning show way -- tell Kilmeade he needed to shut up, and quick, for his own sake. But he didn't get the message, adding, "See, the problem is the Swedes have pure genes. Because they marry other Swedes .... Finns marry other Finns, so they have a pure society."

Freedom of speech means the government can't suppress what you have to say. A network can, and by not admonishing their anchors or apologizing for them, they endorse the ideas of their anchors by paying for them to be expressed on air.

Watching those 2 clips Brett posted, what exactly was said that you feel the network should apologize for???
I didnt think there was one racist comment made by the actual anchors, and personally do not feel its the responsibility of any tv show host to apologize for something one of their guests say. I know if Im a guest on a show and I express my opinion I dont want the fucking anchor aplolgizing for me.
The closest thing I saw was "we need to have more babies" but that clip was cut pretty short so Id rather hear the entire soundbite before making any judgement on that one.
For the record I dont even watch Fox news, Im just commenting on what I saw posted.

I would agree with you if you were talking about the actual NEWS. The problem is just because the station is called FoxNews, doesnt mean every program on it is News. Its mostly talk shows where the hosts have their own opinion. And when hired theres an understanding that these guys feel a certain way and they have their opinion and they are going to express it. Therefore its kind of stupid to hire one of them and then apologize every time they express their opinion and say something that someone finds offensive.
Especially considering that 1/2 of the country is going to disagree with most of what they have to say anyway.

It's not that they should apologize when someone finds something offensive. If they, hypothetically, were to have an anchor state something like "black people oughta be working my farm," or "gay people should be in jail for sodomy", I think the network should apologize for those type of statements if they were to come up. But, yes, Fox News does have anchor that they pay to say retarded things, such as Hannity showing blind outrage that the media is giving too much of a shit for Michael Jackson just because he's too old and lame to know any Michael Jackson work, or Gelnn Beck actually agreeing with a guest that another 9/11 is the only way to get this country back on track, or when they have Michelle Malkin on, because I find it offensive to have a talking duck on the TV.

I agree with Hannity about there being far too much coverage of MJ's death. I understand he was a prominent figure in American culture, but there were more important things going on that the NEWS media should be talking about.
The more I look at the Beck clip, the less I find wrong with it. At first I was thoroughly dissapointed. There are still some things that I think are wrong with what he said. But I think that Glenn Beck agreeing that the country is, sadly, going to need another tragedy to start focusing on security and the like, isn't that offbase. He wasn't hoping for it. And with his show it was more pof a rallying cry to get people/government to start doing things that he feels will make the country safer or run the risk of having another terrorist attack happen on our soil.

Fox News is responsible for whatever their guests say. Should they apologize? No, not if they don't think an apology is necessary. However, it is a cheap way of getting an opinion out there, while maintaining a safe distance. I call it the LordJezo tactic, "I heard at the gym", "at the watercooler", "in the break room." A way of getting an idea out without taking personal responsibility for it.
I agree that the media is paying too much attention to MJ. But, does Hannity complain every time a cute young white girl is missing and Fox spends hour after hour covering what is otherwise a non-story?

I personally feel the exact opposite. I am so tired of hearing about people crying about national security. Its just a fucking ruse and a way for the government to exert more control on us as citizens and spend alot of money on precautions that would be better suited elsewhere.
People love this illusion of safety. Guess what? If someone is willing to kill themselves in order to set off a bomb, there is no amount of government security that can prevent that. Everyone acts like 9/11 was so preventable. I say bullshit. The fact those guys were willing to die to do that handcuffed any efforts the government couldve had to stop them.
Between the internet and Home Depot I could probably buy the materials and build a bomb and blow up Philadelphias City Hall tomorrow if I wanted to. Same with Independance Hall. Or the Liberty Bell. Theres no such thing as guaranteed safety and I think as a country the sooner we realize and accept this, the better off we will all be.

Hannity wasn't so much complaining that the media was paying too much attention to him; he was complaining that he was un-deserving of such attention because of his behavior, and that he sings songs about rats.
There are always more important things going on in the world that should be covered, but they aren't. I don't know what news people watch where it's the MJ tribute 24/7, because I still seem to get my news. I know that Steve McNair is dead and his lover killed him because she thought he was cheating on her, that Sarah Palin quit in order to be a better leader, that New York Senate is still playing games, that California is giving IOUs, that South Carolina has a serial killer, that oil prices are going down as are stocks, that cap-and-trade is in several committees in the Senate, that American troops died in Afghanistan, that Iran has cracked down fully on the revolution, that China has riots with Muslims, that Jason Marquis is an NL All-Star for the first time, etc.
What are these more important things that we expect the media to report on? Their job is to get people watching or reading. Fox News is great at that, they can't even wait for news to play on in reality, they go ahead and speculate that the world is going to shit and it's all the fault of liberals.
I pass a billboard on the BQE on my way to work, for AM 920, The Apple... their tagline "Fighting Liberal Lunacy." These networks know that what's most entertaining is when everyone has a group of people to blame for the worlds problems, that's what gets ratings. And look at it, Fox News is the #1 news channel, Rush Limbaugh is the #1 radio program. People don't care about news reporting about the issues, they care about assigning blame and then bitching about it.

If I bring a guest to your house and he says that he like the Mets, but you are a Yankees fan, should I apologize, no. If my guest burns down your house while ranting about the Mets, should I apologize, probably yes.
If the guests on Fox merely state their political opinions, Fox should not apologize. If the guests are allowed to spew hate and falsehoods, than maybe Fox should apologize.
More importantly, I think we must be cautious that Fox (or any media outlet) isn't using guests to push information they know is untrue, but want to spread any way. Granted, I may have missed the show where he was saying these FEMA camps were true. He then went on to debunk this, saying how ludicrus it was. The "FEMA" camp they showed on one of the websites was actually a terrorist training camp somewhere. He brought that up and debunked it completely.

Government bailouts have happened many times in our nations history. You are aware of this, correct? Here is a link to some historical examples (http://www.propublica.org/special/government-bailouts), including the government bailout of Chrysler in the 1970's.
It just seems to me that too many pundits are trying to use this bailout thing as a "socialist" talking point, rather than a tactic that our government will use to save private industry.

Seriously, was it all part of Obama's evil scheme to take over GM by secretly making sure that they royally fuck up their part of the auto industry so he could have government swoop in and save the day, for what exactly? So he could just let them go publica sometime next year? That's fucking crazy and evil!

I think that if a business isn't doing well and they have made poor choices, they should suffer the same result as other businesses that have failed. The government took over GM and it all still resulted in them filing for bankruptcy.
The government spent 14.9 billion dollars in trying to save it. Another 30 bilion to restructure the company. Where is this money coming from?

I believe money is coming from the TARP program, other money is coming from private entities who also own GM.
Sure, it sounds nic to say "yeah, let it fail." But, the reality is, it's a big company, that if it were to just fail and stop operating would send shock waves throughout the US, and probably put us into a worse position economy-wise.
Let's be clear... GM was going into bankruptcy. Nothing was going to stop that. They needed to raise a tremendous amount of capital if they were to not go under, and they simply could not do it. They tried their best. You can't go and blame government for that... government was trying to lend them a hand while they made the efforts to not go into bankruptcy, so that GM wouldn't just come to a halt and destroy the entire company by not working.
Now, GM is at a point where they've filed for a bankruptcy that will allow them to restructure. They are now coming out of bankruptcy. Next year they will go public again. Government helps out businesses all the time, more than you are aware of.

So the fact that 60% of GM is owned by you and me, being that we pay taxes, is ok with you?

Given that I believe in American industry, given that I believe that in order to get our economy going we have to save some of our biggest corporations, and given that GM is now coming out of bankruptcy and will go public next year, I don't have a problem because the US owning 60% of it right now keeps more of us working, more of us with homes over our heads, more of us able to put food on the table, and the US will probably make some money off of the ownership when GM pays back the money we've given them plus interest, and more money to the US means less tax increases for you and me. Ideology only goes so far.

Keithy, I know you're still young, you have to develop yourself to the point where you think for yourself and question everything you hear on TV. It's scary to see you repeating over and over what Beck, et al, say almost verbatim. Watch what you want, but develop critical thinking skills and question what you watch with common sense. You want to believe Beck is right, but believing he is right in this case means you think we need another terrorist attack. Look at it with common sense and no spin.
It's like if I heard on Olbermann something like "Sarah Palin caught smoking crack" and just came here and said Sarah Palin smokes crack.
I'm sorry, but thank-you for pointing out the frightening thought process of this young man. He does need to learn to think critically, and he also needs to learn alot more history, sociology, etc. before presenting his opinions.

That's the problem with the TV and radio programs... they all wear suits and speak clearly and with a vocabulary of a college educated person, and they look so smart and appealing to people, but they express extremely simplistic views of the world based on outdated and irrational fears of ideas and realities that progress humanity into the future, and they can lure people in with this unified hatred toward a single enemy... the liberal. The liberal is the cause of all problems, and all we need to do is the opposite of the liberal and then we'll be on the right track. Meanwhile, the people who have the progressive ideas can't be pegged to some singular ideology, but they all get lumped together because it means making change, doing something different and untested, something that could fail, something that's a risk, and people are afraid of that.

I take offense with you thinking my line of thinking is frightening. You seem to be refering to me thinking that we need another terrorist attack on the country in order to get it on the right path. In no way did I ever say that.
That comment came from thinking about what the commentator was trying to convey. I never agreed with it.

Holy Shit. He is fucking nuts. I thought Hannity and Rush were intolerable. His example of how our healthcare is so great is that heads of state come here for treatment. ASS! No one is saying that rich people can't get great treatment here. The problem is that a majority of the population does not get quality care.

Normally I would agree with you, but this is a faulty statement. I would say that too high of a percentage of our citizens don't have proper access to medical services.
Its just not a majority.

Glenn Lee Beck (born February 10, 1964) is an American radio and television host, libertarian[1] political commentator, author, and entrepreneur. He hosts The Glenn Beck Program, a nationally syndicated talk-radio show that airs throughout the United States on Premiere Radio Networks. Beck also hosts a self-titled television show on Fox News Channel and shrieks like a little girl.

The problem with people like Beck is that some people take him seriously. I don't so much have a problem with that, except that he presents himself as a "serious" person. People then think he's telling them the truth...
Take the story in the news today:
'GUN NUT' BUSTED AT BASE (http://www.nypost.com/seven/08012009/news/regionalnews/gun_nut_busted_at_base_182423.htm)
A Long Island mother of three -- armed to the teeth with an assault rifle and shotgun -- was arrested for scouting out and taking pictures of an Air National Guard base in the Hamptons, authorities said.
As it turns out, this mother of 3 was a big Glenn Beck fan who was afraid of the "FEMA camps" that Beck (and the Jezo character) warned people about.
In the communications field, a good program is supposed to teach you about responsibility. Its obvious that Glenn Beck didn't attend those classes.

Him, Olberman, Hannity, the chick who follows Olberman, they are all running a bit. And it works. People actually pick sides or agree that these people's opinions on everything are right. It's retarded. Why even pay attention to them? It's just lowering yourself to their level.

If you get all of your information from only one source you are not well informed.I have this argument with a friend of mine alot.Fox's talking heads use the same talking points and the exact same terminology in show after show.If you hear the same thing over and over and never hear anything that contradicts it you will start to believe it.
The same could be said for Olberman/Maddow.
If I put "I have a twelve inch cock" for my sig and you read it every time I posted you would eventually start to think of me as the guy with the twelve inch cock. The actual size would become irrelevant.

This is 100% true. Beck's gimmick is apparent to anybody who's ever seen pro wrestling, listened to Stern or Limbaugh in the 80's, watched Morton Downey Jr or Bill O'Reilly. Nothing new under the sun. The problem isn't that he's saying this shit, it's that people blindly buy into it.
My inlaws believe everything that Baby Huey says, buy his shitty books and repeat his talking points verbatim. Because he was an alcoholic who's found Jesus and the Republican party, you see, so you can trust him to tell you how it really is.

Fox News' ratings are way up. MSNBC's are way up.
CNN? Down.
Why? Responsible journalism doesn't attract the numbers that the others do. It's not "sexy", it's middle of the road, and I give them credit, for staying that way ever since Obama was elected.
However, sooner or later to turn profit, they'll get their own Beck or Oberman to rile people over to their channel to see what the new pundint will be screaming about.
This is the fault of the rubes the Nielsen Company picks as their families to represent the country. And they do pick extremes in order to boost ratings, which keeps advertising dollars flowing, and Nielsen raises their fees year after year. The content is irrelevant, it's the commercial time that matters.

Glenn Beck's 'Racist' Comment Sends Advertisers Elsewhere (http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/fnc/glenn_becks_racist_comment_sends_advertisers_elsew here_123710.asp)
Three companies who had run ads during Glenn Beck's Fox News show have distanced themselves from Beck, including LexisNexis-owned Lawyers.com, Procter & Gamble and Progressive Insurance. We're told a P&G spot inadvertently aired during a weekend Beck broadcast, but that the company never had a regular buy for the show.
The group ColorofChange.org called on their members to pressure advertisers to pull ads from Beck's show after he called Pres. Obama a "racist" who "has a deep-seated hatred for white people."

My sister used to be so smart. I used to look up to her.
Yesterday, she posted a youtube clip of Glenn Beck talking about when you go to cars.gov, the government owns your computer.
I told her that when your reference is Glenn Beck, your argument loses all meaning. Then I got, "I'm his biggest fan, but it's crazy that our government is doing that!" To which I replied with the snopes.com link proving crazy Glenn Beck wrong.
This is the problem with everyone. They just listen to what someone on tv is saying and take it as fact. It's ridiculous.

That's why television is and will forever be the absolute lowest rung when it comes to the news media, even lower than the internet.
Psychologically we're much more likely to question or consider information presented to us if we read it. People are much more likely to take information presented via television at face value.

I wish news would go back to the boring way it was presented when I was a kid. A person behind the desk reading off news statements in a monotone voice as they are handed to them. If the newscaster gets choked up once in a while, like when a really horrible natural disaster occurs or when something really terrible happens that is one thing. But all the spin shows and "journalists" that really want to be celebrities have got to go. And I mean on both sides. News is not supposed to entertain it is supposed to present the situations and facts as they come up.

More companies pull Beck ads: Wal-Mart, CVS, Best Buy (http://www.politico.com/blogs/michaelcalderone/0809/More_companies_pull_Beck_ads_WalMart_CVS_Best_Buy. html)
Earlier today, I noted that GMAC Financial Service will cease advertising on Glenn Beck's Fox show — but that's not all.
ColorOfChange, an African-American online political organization that’s targeted Beck’s advertisers since his calling Obama a “racist,” says in a release that eight companies confirmed today they’re pulling ads from the top-rated Fox News show. The list of 20 companies now includes Wal-Mart, CVS, and Best Buy.
James Rucker, executive director of ColorOfChange, told POLITICO it’s significant that major corporations are no longer “willing to attach their brand to the show." Rucker added that the organization's problems with Beck run deeper than just his “racist” comments. Beck, in his opinion, is regularly stoking the “fears of white America” and “pushing fiction as if it's news analysis.”
I'm sure Rupert Murdoch isn't laughing at the moment...

I don't necessarily agree with these companies pulling ads, but good for them. If they do not agree with the comentator and feel strongly enough to pull their company from the space, that's fine with me. (I also think Beck criticized Walmart by name on one of his shows)
I have a question though; Does anyone link commercials that air during a TV show with the show? I've never done that, but maybe that's just me.

But the problem is that they're not pulling their ads because they disagree with what is on the show; they're pulling their ads because a group of people who have probably never watched the show are threatening to boycott their products because they are sponsors on the show.

You say that, but back in the 90's the religious groups tried to assemble a boycott of Disney because there were gay days at the theme parks, plus Disney is a very gay friendly company in terms of benefits and such.
Disney told them to get bent.
You think Wal-Mart was afraid of a boycott by some group of lefties who don't like Glenn Beck? No way.
I read an interesting thing about people like your sister - and my father, unfortunately: when you confront them with the truth - ie. Snopes - about some crazy ass thing they believe, it actually works in reverse and reenforces their belief in the lie even more.

Granted, pretty much everyone knows about Walmart anyway. Them pulling the ads from his show won't cause them to lose customers.

I totally believe this. Maybe a few people actually boycott, but the THREAT of the boycott is what gets things done. And as for it not actually happening since the 60's... I think the corporate boycott became most popular in the 80's, when boycotts were called for against companies and Universities that had dealings with South Africa.

Memo to Hannity: Spencer Bachus is not Max Baucus (http://mediamatters.org/research/200908200004)
On his Fox News show, Sean Hannity falsely claimed that Senate Finance Committee chairman Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) said Social Security "could face default" and "could be insolvent" within two years. In fact, it was Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL) who made the comments about Social Security in an interview with the Tuscaloosa News, and his staff later clarified that he meant to say Social Security could face a "deficit," not "default."

I watched Beck's show this week and he does raise some valid questions. Obama has surrounded himself with some people who you wonder how they got into his cabinet.
Do you seriously sit down and watch this from start to finish? I dont know how you do it

I'm jsut wondering how these people managed to get into direct contact with the highest office in the USA.

Lisa Jackson, Tim Geithner to start
Lisa Jackson, Tim Geithner to start
You may not like them, but its not like they were unqualified.
Jackson has multiple science degrees, and was the head of the Department of Environmental Protection in New Jersey.
Geitner obviously is was a student of economics, and was the head of the Federal Reserve Bank of NY.
I'm talking about serious "gift jobs"...not people you don't like.

One guy who Beck(oh my god I know what a mindless fuck I am, huh?) really talked about was Van Jones.
I did my own research and he has since definately toned down some of his 'radical' views, but still.

He's totally not qualified.

This guy, on the other hand, is definitely qualified.

Not liking Van Jones for his connection to the Rodney King mess or human rights activism is one thing...but once again, its not like he's just anybody with the job he has. He is a Special Advisor for Green Jobs. In 2008 Time Magazine called him an "environmental hero" for his work with the green sector, namely his "Green for All" organization.
So not liking his politics is one thing, but "wondering how he got the job" is really kind of silly when you think about it.

He got elected President by winning a majority of electoral votes. The people he has surrounded himself with got into his cabinet because he chose them.
The questions that Beck is raising are pointless. If you don't like the President or his choices for the people he has surrounded himself with, don't vote for him in 2012. Until then, come up with some ideas to tackle the problems we face as a nation.
