Wow!

Just saw my first instance of a McCain surrogate trying to explain why they can criticize Obama's experience, and yet put Palin a step away from the Presidency.

They have NO answer...absolutely none.

I'll agree that she has little experience, but the little she does have puts her ahead of Obama.

And besides, there is a big difference between being the president and being one step away from the presidency. Most of the time the V.P. does next to nothing for four years. Try to remember anything that Cheney, Gore, Quayle, or Bush 1 did as V.P. that really made a difference.

abc news:

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is "Country First," the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always."

Thanks for posting that.

The only issue I could think of definitively that 'most Americans' probably agree with her on, is gay marriage.

I'll avoid the "small talk" too. The think I'm least impressed about is her talk of "fiscal discipline".

Christ....it's pretty goddamned easy to be fiscally disciplined when you are getting $1.83 from the federal government for every $1 you send in taxes (http://www.nemw.org/fundsrank.htm). You wanna see discipline, call Governor Corzine who is getting 65 cents on the dollar.

Bridge to Nowhere.....fuck you!

Umm Do you really want to start a Corzine fiscal discussion here? That's not a good example sir.

Umm Do you really want to start a Corzine fiscal discussion here? That's not a good example sir.

Actually I don't want an in-depth discussion about Governor Corzine. However my larger point is that it's always hilarious to me to hear Governors of certain regions that receive disproportionate federal dollars tell people how they have "fiscal discipline" or are "reformers".

It's a false premise for a true discussion. Governor Palin is a great example of that when she uses the whole "we sent money back to the taxpayers" line.

Clinton had 14 years of experience as Governor of AR - AK is Alaska. Palin has had less than 2 years.

Is he really trying to correct me on something to which I already conceded 20 minutes prior to his post?

Way to follow the conversation, pal.

And as long as we're talking about your reading comprehension, may I suggest that I was comparing the town sizes and not the length of anyone's respective term?

Besides, we're not allowed to talk about experience...or are we now? The rules change so often.

Obama is far from the most experienced guy in the world, but Jesus Christ, at least he's lived, worked, schooled and travelled extensively around the country and the world his entire life. Palin seems to be like 97% Alaska with a couple years in Idaho and a semester in Hawaii. Her focus her whole life seemingly has been this tiny little corner up near the top of the world. I don't know the woman, and she very well may prove me wrong, but it seem pretty ridiculous to try and attack the experience issue by just stacking up their resumes without actually looking at the context and specifics of what each person was doing and who they were. For better or for worse, Obama seems to have the making of a conscious career politician on the modern global state. I don't see that from Palin at all. She's obviously no dummy to get to where she is, but really...the leap she's making is huge. Obama is taking some giant steps at a relatively young age, but if you follow his path and read his books it's pretty clear he's had intentions to shoot for the big chair for at least a decade now and has acted and likely developed accordingly. Snide comments about "the rules" and "what we can talk about" don't do any kind of breakdown of the specifics of who these people are ad what their careers have entailed. It's all just stacked up as dates and titles with zero sense of context or personal identity/history.

ChrisTheCop

Your point made alot of sense, until the last sentence, which snapped me out of it.

That sentence seemed more appropriate in the original Palin thread.

And if you can't see that the Obama supporters change the rules willy nilly (and yes thats an important thing in any debate!) when it suits them, just as much as McCain supporters do, then youre perception is simply different than mine.

I dont call you silly for it. Please do not do so to me.

Now. There was indeed a time when Obama supporters said experience was not as important as other things he brought to the table, was there not?

If we needed any more proof that the "Maverick" John McCain has left us, then look no further than this:

McCain Hires GOP Operative Who Helped Smear Him in South Carolina in 2000 (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/mccain-hires-go.html?cid=128664060#comment-128664060)

Former officials of Sen. John McCain's 2000 campaign expressed shock and disbelief Monday to learn than the GOP presidential nominee had hired South Carolina political consultant Tucker Eskew.

Eskew, along with Warren Tompkins and Neal Rhodes, were key members of then-Gov. George W. Bush's South Carolina team during the 2000 primaries. McCain and his team long held Bush, Tompkins, Rhodes and Eskew responsible for the various smears against McCain and his family in the Palmetto state during that contentious contest.

It's over. The Senator is no longer a credible "Straight Talkin'" man.

I'm not sure what's funnier. This:

Aides to Mr. McCain said they had a team on the ground in Alaska now to look more thoroughly into Ms. Palin’s background. A Republican with ties to the campaign said the team assigned to vet Ms. Palin in Alaska had not arrived there until Thursday, a day before Mr. McCain stunned the political world with his vice-presidential choice. The campaign was still calling Republican operatives as late as Sunday night asking them to go to Alaska to deal with the unexpected candidacy of Ms. Palin.

Or this:

Rudy Bumped

The Republican Convention is segueing from Hurricane Gustav to John McCain today. As RNC Chairman Mike Duncan put it on a conference call currently underway with reporters, "We continue to monitor the situation along the Gulf Coast. ... but we'll be hearing a lot about John McCain."

The decision to proceed with a full schedule today was made early this morning, according to campaign manager Rick Davis. Today's theme, under the banner of "Country First" (which is emblazoned throughout the convention hall), is "Who is John McCain?"

President Bush will speak to delegates via a satellite hookup. Former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN) will give a speech titled "The Courage and Service of John McCain." The evening's featured speaker is Sen. Joe Lieberman, whose speech is titled "The Original Maverick."

That means Rudy Giuliani is getting bumped from his speaking slot tonight to make room for some of the events delayed from Monday, but Davis says they are trying to reschedule Rudy for Wednesday night.

But Pastor Kalnins has also preached that critics of President Bush will be banished to hell; questioned whether people who voted for Sen. John Kerry in 2004 would be accepted to heaven; charged that the 9/11 terrorist attacks and war in Iraq were part of a war "contending for your faith;" and said that Jesus "operated from that position of war mode."

And some quotes from Palin herself:

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

"I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was not subjected to a lengthy in-person background interview with the head of Sen. John McCain's vice presidential vetting team until last Wednesday in Arizona, the day before McCain asked her to be his running mate, and she did not disclose the fact that her 17-year-old daughter was pregnant until that meeting, two knowledgeable McCain officials acknowledged Tuesday.

Turns out she's got ties to Jews for Jesus. (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13098.html)

But Democrats hope Palin’s social conservatism, her paper-thin record on Israel, and — perhaps most importantly — her cultural roots in evangelical Christianity may be a major turnoff to Jewish voters, just as Republicans have tried to reach women disappointed that Obama didn’t choose Hillary Clinton,

I have never understood that fear. Jews have more to fear from Conservative European Catholics then evangelical Americans.

I've heard Chris Matthews rant and rave unchallenged about how evangelical Christians' support of Isreal is really in fact a secret plan to speed up Armegeddan.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

1. Evangelical Christians-like myself, who are in the majority-recognize that our Saviour Jesus Christ was a Jew, and while Norton's "Christ-killer" jokes are funny, that originated from some very anti-Semetic edicts from the Catholic Church during the good old Dark Ages, and like other forms of racism, the stigma remains.

2. The argument that Christians support Isreal only to speed up the Tribulation is an argument that is on it's head wrong. American Christians support Isreal because of Isreal's invitation to us to be able to come to Isreal to worship Jesus where he walked without fear of retribution. The notion that we are setting up Isreal for the end times is silly-any serious study of the Tribulation shows that Isreal will never be defeated, and anyone and any country that plots to "setup" Isreal will be crushed by Jesus when He returns to earth after the Tribulation period is over.
Armageddon is the final battle on Earth, and all the world's armies are under control by the AntiChrist. They gather at Armageddon to crush Isreal so the AntiChrist can rule the world without those pesky Messianic Jews spreading the propoganda of Jesus Christ's plan of Salvation. (12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Isreal, totalling 144,000)
When the armies gather, Jesus returns from Heaven, and with a single word, destroys the armies of the world.
Isreal is safe, Jesus is victorious and anyone who supported the AntiChrist is judged and cast into Hell.

So while you struggle to lift your jaws back off the floor (I understand, if I were not a Evangelical, this shit would make me say "WTF" too) I'll give you the Cliff Notes:

Christians believe the Jews are God's Chosen People. Anyone who crosses the Jews get stomped on by God. Therefore, we support the Jews and Isreal.

Plus Jesus was a Jew, so if He's cool with us, the rest of them must be alright too. The fact that there are organizations like Jews for Jesus, while that may be a bit much, there are more formal organizations such as Friends of Israel (http://www.foigm.org/).

Sorry it took so long to respond. I went to bed and had a long day, and when I got home, spent my time in the Palin speech thread.

Anyway......

The Old Testament is when Israel's enemies were stomped to the ground. We live in New Testament era now, when we are in the age of grace. But that will one day end, and Jesus will return to the earth.

Okay, this "age of judges" vs. "age of grace" is important:

The goofy pastors going off on how Israel is being "judged" by God with terrorism are the same nuts that blamed Hurricane Katrina on the gays and liberals, and 9/11 on the gays and liberals. They are dead wrong on ALL counts, because we live in the age of grace.

Also in the Old Testament, the age of judges, Israel was also conquered by its enemies when they turned from God. The Babylonians got em, the Phillistines got 'em, the Egyptian got 'em. When they repented, God got them back out of bondage.

Now we live in the age of grace, where we are left to our own devices, and judgement will come in the next life, not now. See where these pastors are wrong?

Also, a true study of Israel's role in the End Times reveals that they will not be converted to Christianity, instead they will have a revival of worshipping God "Old School" not unlike during the days of King David and Solomon, with a temple, annual sacrifices to God, a high priest and religious judges. This is not Christianity, this is original Judeo religious practices that date back to Moses and Abraham. Israel and Jews, although not practicing Christianity as we know it to be, will find favor with God and be protected during the Tribulation.

Like I said before, the whole "Christ Killer" shit started with edicts from Rome in the Dark Ages......also there seems to be an anti-semitic wave in Europe, which is still mainly Catholic (and Episcopalian, which is just diet catholic)

I would say most Catholics and priests here in America have progressed enough to get beyond the "Jews killed Jesus" thing. I would also go as far as to say that American Catholics have gotten better then us Protestants in the whole "love your neighbor" idea as well.

But that explanation was to try to show that Evangelicals are not out to secretly destroy Israel to bring on the Rapture and the Tribulation.

Just the dummies. But they are few and far between. They seem like a lot, because they are the ones shown in the media whenever American-Israel relations are discussed. I say most evangelicals are like me-and we are biased to Israel, but we also have eyes and can condemn Israel when they go too far when they defend themselves, such as the invasion of Lebanon while they were chasing Hezbollah back to Syria.

More TrooperGate. (http://deepbackground.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/09/04/1347737.aspx)

The GOP candidate for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, may be facing yet another ethics investigation back in her home state of Alaska. An ethics complaint obtained by NBC News was filed Wednesday by the police officers union in Alaska, requesting a probe into possible wrongdoing by the governor or her office. It was brought on behalf of state trooper Mike Wooten, an ex-brother-in-law of Palin who is at the center of the "Troopergate" scandal.

The complaint alleges that the governor or her staff may have have improperly disclosed information from Wooten's personnel records. The complaint alleges "criminal penalties may apply."

John Cyr, director of the union that filed the complaint, told NBC News, "It seems obvious to us somebody has improperly accessed [Wooten's] personnel file."

Isn't the inquiry of this investigation due back on October 31? Talk about your October surprise...

That wacky McCain/Palin ticket. Today as John McCain introduced Sarah Palin he used this line:

"You know what i enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay — made a profit."

Certainly she did put the stupid airplane on eBay, but nobody bought it. In fact she put it on eBay 3 different times with no takers. She did however sell the airplane for a $500K loss, which doesn't seem to be a profit to me. (Link) (http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0908/Not_selling_on_eBay.html?showall)

ABC News just released a poll centered on Sarah Palin and I am shocked by it. I'm not trying to be sarcastic here, I'll explain afterward.

Favorability Ratings:

Sarah Palin: 50-37 All 53-34 Independent
Joe Biden: 54-30 All 52-31 Independent

I cannot believe this is a wash. And yes, this poll was all post Palin speech. I thought that speech was more effective but I guess I need to stop watching MSNBC gushing over every person who steps in front of a microphone. More less shocking stuff:

Does the Palin selection make you more confident in John McCain? 43-38 All, 44-37 Independent

Enough experience to be President?

Palin 42-50 All
Biden 66-21 All

News coverage of Palin unfair?

Fair 50 unfair 41

Does Biden/Palin make you more or less likely to vote for Obama/McCain?

Biden 22-10
Palin 25-19

If anything it looks like Biden is marginally more valuable at this point. We'll see what more polling says.

HBox - I don't honestly think much of this is a shocker, but just seems weird. But look at the numbers that I've isolated about "experience". This only feeds the point that while McCain has definitely fired up the right-wing base with this pick, he has completely destroyed his argument that "experience matters" with that same pick as well.

WOW What a Stretch for the democratic CNN. I bet they hated digging for that one.

McCain lies to your face and you are mad that someone tells you about it. Wonderful.

That's the whole point of all the "liberal media" bashing of the past several years. Create a whole group of rubes who'll reject criticism of Republicans from the "MSM", and only trust news sources that are friendly to the Republicans. It's pathetic.

The Daily Show in tonight's show ripped McCain in particular and the Republican Party in such a savage, hilarious way I almost can't believe what I saw.

I don't think John McCain will be back there anytime soon.

Seriously, the Obama campaign ought to just take the segment from about 4:45 to 6:00 from this clip and start running it as an ad.

John Stewart did a job on McCain last night. It was funny, but it reminded me of how much McCain has gotten cozy with Bush in the past two years, while the rest of us were running away from Bush.

Lets have Larry the Cable Guy and Dennis Miller (the Dennis Miller of today) put on a comedy show of their own. I'm sure it will be hilarious

It's just a funny show. If you use it to make voting decisions, I feel bad for you. But even if you do, there are others who use the "news" they get in their email to decide who to vote for as well.

Such as this gem sent to me from my parents-"Scary Headlines from the year 2029"

The straw that broke the camel's back was in the "Reformed Maverick" video when they said McCain crashed 5 planes. That means they counted his getting shot by an errand missile on the USS Forrestal in his stationary plane as "crashing." That's not a side, that's a lie. It's good for a few laughs, but in that moment, you can't help but think that maybe Rush (a guy I can't stand) was right when he said that McCain shouldn't trust his old media friends ever again.

The decision to replace them with the Colbert Report was a stupid one wasn't it?

That would have made the video funnier.

And maybe, just maybe, McCain the Daily Show down. They used to love the guy. Of course they would change their opinion once McCain changed so much. He can't change himself politically and expect everyone to treat himself the same.

Besides, McCain has already made his choice to attack and blame the media. With every new choice he makes this campaign he becomes more and more like a typical Republican.

yeah..as much as I loved "Tough Crowd", it really was never a "run away" hit like the Daily Show and Colbert are. Maybe they could say that their was a bias against them, but if the show was a huge hit, it wouldn't matter

No, but replacing it with Too Late with Adam Carolla, The Graham Norton Effect, Wanda Does It, and Stella were stupid decisions. Finally, Comedy Central replaced Tough Crowd with another half hour of the Daily Show... another half hour of cheap shots for credulous NYU and Columbia students to cheer.

Colbert and TDS are HUGELY promoted and were even more heavily promoted when they first came on. Jon Stewart's arrival was touted for a month, if I remember correctly.

Ratings aside, Tough Crowd was just as funny or funnier, so don't tell me that just because the 1/2 Hour News Hour was the most pitiful entertainment in history means that conservatives are incapable of humor.

Tough Crowd didn't appeal to audiences like "the Daily Show" did. We are fans of the comics, but "Tough Crowd" was a weird show of the 4 comics and Colin trying to discuss issues and then resulting n making fun of eachother. You can't deny "The Daily show" isn't popular, all the marketing in the world wouldn't matter if the show sucked. I don't see the conservatives being able to pull off a counter-part. Usually, the stuff conservatives watch is just some loud guy spouting his opinions and why the liberals run everything (the Rush Limbaugh's and Sean Hannity (and what Dennis Miller became). Liberals react to a more subtle type of entertainment

It came completely out of left field (or right field) and there was more conservative viewpoints getting thrown out there than liberal ones. And it was hilarious. It was never promoted like the Daily Show was.

I'm not denying that for one moment. But would TDS be that big without the support of the network that TC never got? I don't know for sure, but I'm confident the network executives weren't sending Jon Stewart memos on what subjects he could or could not talk about in their nascent days. Don't see it? I just gave you an example. Now all it needs is a network willing to take the risk.

the Daily Show has been a staple on Comedy Central for 12 years now. OF COURSE they are going to try and support it as much as possible. TDS and South Park ARE Comedy Central. The reason they heavily advertised before Jon Stewart took over was probably to try and get people to give the show a chance without Kilborn. Stewart's track record with TV shows before that was atrocious.

The difference being that Colin Quinn wasn't taking over one of the top two shows on the network. Most shows are not going to get a big push. Wanda Sykes show came and went without anyone noticing. Even Chappelle's Show wasn't pushed all that hard until it pulled in some big ratings.

HBox, we're going in circles. All I'm saying is that it's fair to say that if I had to brand Tough Crowd politically, I'd say it was conservative. And it was a funny show. So yes, conservative shows have the capacity to be funny. That doesn't make Mallard Fillmore funny, but it's been done and it could be done again.

One of my main points is that Tough Crowd just didn't fit from a programming standpoint. You build up a huge audience with The Daily Show and follow it with a show that's going to drive away most of the TDS crowd, no matter how good it is on its own. It wasn't going to fit with TDS, it wasn't going to win over it, there's not really anywhere else to put a 4 day a week show on the schedule, of course it wasn't going to work out long term.

But i do agree that conservatives are funny, even if shit like this gives me pause:
