LOL. No.
And seeing Big Papi wearing that #42 jersey was like seeing Mo Vaughn back at the plate.
http://capecodbaseball.org/News/HOFame/Hall2000/HOF_moVaughn.jpg
Mo was one of my favs 10 years ago. I loved his stance at the plate. His biggest mistake was leaving Boston. If he would have stayed he may have had a longer career. I know injuries shortened it, but I always thought he wouldnt have gotten injured if he stayed. (Stupid I know )

I know -- I felt the same way. The first time I saw Papi bat it was like having Mo back again.
I still remember how my late grandfather (a Yankee fan since BEFORE Ruth) always remarked how he loved Mo's swing.

They haven't given him a chance. He's only had 29 at bats. I know if you take out Coco Crisp you lose a lot of speed, but I think Wily Mo the better player. His past seasons make it look like he could be a 30 homerun guy with a reasonable avg.

The only way Pena is better is power, and his inability to hit the curve negates that. He's as bad in the outfield as Manny can be and can't run either. I'd rather have Crisp (or in reality Ellsbury).
Wily Mo would be a good everyday player on another team but there really isn't a spot for him here to get the at bats he needs.

Dice-K pitched alright. Had that really rough inning but came back around and retired the last 7. Better than last time against the yanks.
Things could have been a lot uglier in that 4th so for Dice-K to get out of it the way he did was huge.
OK -- Come on Wake!!!!

Dice-K seems to lose the zone at times. His change starts floating too much and gets way out of the zone. He doesn't seem to let it bother him though. He is a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Pats are making Yankees mistakes.. Go away from what made you a success.. Role players and good not great players in most pos.. You guys are going after the Sexy players, not knowing if they fit or not.. It may work.. I am not saying it won't.. But it may turn out awful too.

Good point on EEI this morning. Last year when our season was down the tubes why didn't we fire our strength and conditioning coach? I mean he was definately the reason Lester got cancer.
Why that would be like firing your manager because he left Pedro in too long in Game 7.

Jeter went to Michigan for like a year. He wasnt there when Brady was there. Brady was a freshmen nobody when Jeter won his first world series ring and rookie of the year. I doubt thats why he had a Yankee hat on. He might just like the yanks or the colors, who cares. People get so over worked over this for no reason. The players dont give 2 shits yet the fans make it such a big deal. And they do this b/c they let the media make it a big deal to them.

If Torre was our manager he woulda pulled him in the first and then completely f'd our pen. I'm really starting to appreciate Francona as a manager. It seems he's running guys alot more this year (Probably because he has 3 good runners now) and he's handled the pen well. Like not using Paplebon last night when he could have panicked. Now I know that this could well be Farrell guiding him more than Nipper did last year, but damn I now believe that he's more than a front office stooge.
Like not using Paplebon last night when he could have panicked.

Timlin's in the 15-day DL but they brought up Devern Hansack. I like that.

Is Manny still watching his home run?
It was his first really lousy start. And even at that he didn't get hit around hard. He'll get it.
In his last three starts, he's pitched 18 innings and given up 17 runs. It's more than just one start. The only difference last night was that he wasn't even striking anyone out (he had struck 7 in each of his two previous starts).
Again though, I'd give him at least until the All Star break before trying to really look at how good/bad he has been for the Sox. I do like his creativity on the mound (reminds me of David Cone), but overall he hasn't the velocity (96+) or control all the scouts claimed he did when Seibu announced they would post him.

Fukijama has been pretty good.. I gotta see how he does, during the later months, when teams have seen him more.. Esp. Al East teams.. But he has been great.. And good point Cb1 on Dice K.. His Velocity is not as good as they said.. And like Igawa.. He could walk the ballpark.. Nomo was wild, So is Igawa, You think it has something to do with the Baseballs in Japan, being softer, and they can grip it better? Thats why they have shown better control there??
But, that saying.. I have to Give Matsuzaka until at least Allstar break Next year, before i pass any real judgment on him.. But from what i have seen so far.. He is not nearly as good as his hype.. At least not to warrant his 17mil a year Sal (with bid) But, i have to say, he does have the make up to be good.. He can have a awful inning, then come back the next inn, like it didn't happen.. He will be OK to Good in my book, but not nearly as good as the hype...
Dan 'Hampton
05-04-2007, 08:51 AM
I agree with Kevin that we have to wait. He does have the velocity and sure as hell has movement but when he's working out of the strech he can't control that and his ERA skyrockets.
" Including tonight, opponents are batting .221 against Daisuke Matsuzaka with the bases empty (.280 OBP). They are batting .271 (.389 OBP) with runners on base.
Matsuzaka's ERA is 3.00 (9 earned runs in 27 innings) when he retires the first batter, 11.45 (14 runs in 11 innings) when the leadoff batter reaches base." from Nick Cafardo, Boston Globe.

I'm willing to bet that most pitchers have similar issues when the leadoff batter reaches base.

Hmmm. If he was a Yankee, somehow I suspect you'd be calling him a bust by now.
Most of the scouts I heard (plus Bobby V) said they though it was a no brainer he'd be good. They all stopped short of saying great. "Good" could be a 15-10 or 14-9 pitcher. Nice, but at 17 mil you wonder if you could get more bang for the buck elsewhere.

Apparently he was signed originally to a Major League deal. So he's been rushed along his whole life, without ever learning how to hit a curve. He has immense power i'll give him that but he should be a rookie now. He's 25 and this is his 6th year in the bigs. WAY TO EARLY. I'm sure he could start in KC or some other small market but he'll NEVER get the atbats here to hone his skills. Actually kind of sad. Still better than Drew Henson though, who the yanks traded him for. That being said today we're kicking ass so i say put him in Terry.

Dude where have you been. Nothing but stories in the Boston Media about how he's trying to burn off energy before starts in an attempt to "relax" when throwing the ball.
"Matsuzaka averaged nearly 13 complete games in his last three seasons in Japan (38 for the Seibu Lions), so perhaps that's why it wasn't such a big deal to him to record his first here."
-from the Boston Globe.
It doesn't seem that tiredness effects him that much. He's not Pedro.

No, but this is the same kind of thing that has nagged him for years now.
He has an issue with blisters and other types of skin problems on the fingers of his throwing hand. A lot of people were of the opinion last season that he was pitching to avoid getting blisters, which is why he was getting knocked around so much. I have no idea how valid that is since I haven't seen him pitch all that much.

From what he was saying on Sunday a bad seam or edge on the ball was what cut his finger. NESN has compared his delivery from last year to this many times and it shows that he's slowing his wind-up. That and folks in the know are saying he's becoming a pitcher rather than a hurler. I cut my finger last night. I'll keep you updated on if i can pitch 5 days from now.

Tavarez is scary as hell to watch and last night he did have control issues but damn! As a #5 starter this guy is money. Arod and his mickey mouse gloves is a douche. I know you can take out the second basemen and that that is part of the rules but a pop-up slide into second and then throwing a shoulder to the groin of the kid isn't part of that bullshit "class" that the Yankees preach.

Agreed. I wait for the collapse to happen with him but in his last couple of starts he's been great. He even had a no-no going thorugh 4.

That was a nice performance by Tavarez, but I can't wait until Lester gets healthy. I don't know how much Tavarez will help in the bullpen, but there is definitely an opportunity to do so. Papelbon, Okajima, Romero, Lopez and Snyder are all pitching pretty well.

A-Rod speaks out
By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff
Alex Rodriguez today spoke about his run-in last night with Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia.
"It was an awkward slide," A-Rod said. "We we're fighting for every run. I'm playing as hard as I can. I kind of came up. I definitely didn't roll or anything like that. It was definitely not intentional."
He was asked if he took exception to Pedroia's comments against him.
"No exception. None whatsoever," A-Rod responds. "They have their opinions over there. I'm just glad it got us a run. I like Pedroia. I have a lot of respect for those guys over there.
"Every run for us is like huge. I'm just not going to go in like a little baby doll and try to hug him. I'm trying to play hard."
A-Rod was told that Pedroia may change his throwing motion to avoid such a play.
"That's a good idea," A-Rod said. "I played shortstop for a long time and some guys really hit you hard. I barely touched him (Pedroia)."

We didn't spend 18 mil on a 44 year old pitcher who won't be available to pitch in one of the most important series of the season for them. Money well spent.

I feel the need to defend Drew because he is a fellow Seminole, but it's getting harder to do. Hinske is a hard-nosed, scrappy player (see Nixon, Millar), so it would be nice to see him get more AB's.
In defense of Drew, he has to start hitting eventually...right? Either that or get injured.

Coco's not hitting either but at least he's making some catches. Fucking Drew can't catch a ball sailing to the bullpen or one rattling around the right field corner. He makes Wily Mo look like Roberto Clemente.

Why is it just you Yankee fans that bring up how many championships you have? Celtic fans don't do it, Canadian fans don't do it, just Yankee fans. If you're going to live in the past, don't forget to bring up that your team is the only team EVER in the history of professional Major League Baseball to blow a 3-0 lead in the playoffs. And your team did it in the American League Championship, against the hated Boston Red Sox. AND dropped the last two games at home.

In his prime, you would never miss his starts. You just knew something special was going to happen.
I was watching the game since the 6th and had a feeling it would have a Moose-like ending.
Still, a GREAT outing for Schill and a much needed win during the annual "June Swoon".

If you are referring to me, I never said Pedro wasn't a great pitcher. I have seen him pitch enough both on TV and in person to know better than that. I never compared Schilling to Pedro to Clemens. I merely drew a comparison between Schilling's big win to end a losing streak and Clemens' former propensity to do so. Any Red Sox fan knows that Roger Clemens had a ridiculous record when the team was on a 3 or 4 game losing streak since his last start.
So, you can continue to state the obvious and go on fighting windmills, if you wish.

It started as a stupid joke.. (which i tend to make alot of..)You made it big by trying to be clever and starting arguments.. lets just end it...

A strong outing from Wake last night even though, as usual, he got hardly any offensive support.
This team has got to lead the league in LOB.

Good game last night.
It was brought up earlier this week that Wake is getting screwed on offensive production because mirabelli can't hit and since he's wake's catcher the opposing team has an easier time getting through the order with an additional easy out.

He'll make it as either a manager pick or at the latest as the final fan pick. Why they DH isn't in every Allstar game makes no sense. If I were the manager with the starting pitcher in the allstar game on my team I'd be freaking out that he'd have to bat in an exhibition.

I never got why there's no DH in the All-Star game. You can argue all you want about whether it belongs in the normal games, but the All-Star game is an exhibition and no one really wants to see pitcher hit.
Although, watching Dice-K pitch is pretty fucking hilarious.
Well that was awful.

Schilling to get MRI on right shoulder (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19316721/)
Taking no chances, the first-place Red Sox sent Schilling (6-4) back to Boston to get checked out by the team’s medical director, Dr. Thomas J. Gill.
“The ball didn’t come out of his hand too well,” manager Terry Francona said. “He didn’t complain of pain or anything. The ball just wasn’t coming out.”
This could explain his recent poor performances (and 87 MPH fastball). If it shows any damage, Doctors might try resting him and the Red Sox will likely lose him for an extended time (2 months). If he needs surgery, he's done for a year and a half, which probably means his career is over at 41.
This could also be an injury that gives the Yanks a chance to get back in striking distance over the next 2 months.

Hmm. It could be a Beckett, Matsuzaka, Wakefield, Lester, Tavarez rotation down the stretch. Hopefully it is just precautionary and maybe he only misses a start or two.

Its a very tough call with Schilling if he's really hurt. He's not pitching well, so if you try to keep throwing him out there that wont not help you. If you rest him for an extended time he's lost to you for that time and there's no guarantee that he'll come back and be effective. Unlike Pedro, he doesn't have a wide selection of pitches to fall back on to reinvent himself. He's a power pitcher who's throwing the ball 87 MPH.

MRI shows no damage. (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/06/20/doctors_checking_schilling/)
He'll be fine. I say rest him a start or two. Maybe got a tired arm. Let Gabbard come up and fill in. Hold of on Lester untill we have a permanent spot in the rotation for him.
Beckett great last night. Got out of a few jams and then dominated. Glad to see last outing was just a blurb.

Glad Schill's OK. I'd give him a rest and bring Gabbard up. Even Lester to give him a little practice back in the bigs...and for him to get the standing O/"welcome back" at Fenway he deserves.
Coco Crisp has pissed me off with his lack of hitting this year (until recently anyway) but his defense has always been stellar. Case in point: that diving grab last night.

Well then, that begs the question "If he's fine, then why is he pitching so bad?"
If the answer is "He's 41" as the article said, then how is that supposed to improve?

He's obviously not the ace anymore. He's had really good games this season and then a few bad in a row. 10

Letting Mirabelli sign with SD was a costly error. Cla isn't having the best year, but if last year is any indication, we're going to miss him in the future.
Can't wait for today's game. Should be an awesome pitching matchup. I hope it's not the SD radio announcers on XM. I can't stand Jerry Coleman.

Even though I think it'd be an upgrade to our pitching, I think there are other teams that are much more hard out for pitching and will outbid the Sox.

I don't think we really need him. Probably just trying to drive up the asking price should the Yankees try to sign him. Assuming Schilling comes back healthy, we have a solid rotation for the stretch run and playoffs. Tavarez is pitching well as the 5 and we have Lester waiting in the wings.

Plus they'd be asking for either Lester, Ellsbury, or Buckholz. Thats three strikes right there. Now we somehow get him for Delcarmen or someone like that I'm for it. Even better straight up for Lugo*.

This is from a Mets reporter's blog from about an hour ago:
Word is the White Sox aren’t willing to offer a 72-hour negotiating window for Mark Buehrle. Can’t understand that decision if they have no intention of re-signing him.
A team would have to be desperate, not to mention stupid, to give up multiple prospects for a rental.

The Yanks could use him in middle relief. Keep that 22 guy off the field on his off days.

The Seattle series sucked but hey, we left 8 1/2 up over the Yanks and go home 9 up over Toronto and 11 over the Yanks.
Good to see Wake work his way out of some jams despite ANOTHER weak-ass offensive effort.
Who was that guy wearing Josh Beckett's uniform last night? Because Beckett would NEVER blow a 4-0 lead.
