Papelbon is much more valuable as a starter, and I think he'll be a very good one. He's definitely get the command and assortment of pitches to do well as a starter, plus it sounds like the Sox think it will be easier to keep him healthy as a starter than as a closer.

The local writers have ties to the local teams front office, which is as often as not lying. The out of state and national writers can have other ties and get other info that the locals miss.

Thats not to say they're always right, either. They're not. But you tend to get one message from the beat writers and a very different one from the others.
Thats all well and good except for the fact that this story is about 3 days old and has been denied by both parties involved. This is one of those stories when a team plants something about their competetor or a suitor to a player in order to drive up a price.

Paps has been interviewed a bunch and willingly says that he'd go back to the pen. It's the team that says they won't not the medical staff. Lester will be up and Paps will be the closer.

If you think this was the plan all along, you have not been paying a lick of attention... The Kid, Paps. has had his heart set on starting, since last year ended.. He prepared all winter for it, and was lookin forward to it.. He will do it, because he seems like a trooper, but he is NOT happy.

Yes, we have a lot of great young hitters. Rag the Royals all you want, but for 1 day and perhaps 1 day only we have SCOREBOARD. Sure our team sucks Royally on the whole, but I still enjoy watching us develop great young talent.
Remember Bosox fans, without Johnny Damon (who came up thru Royal rookie league and A ball) you most likely are still looking to win a ring.
Oh, and ask the Cardinals if they win last years World Series without Suppan (another gem from the Royals farm system).
Maybe we can't afford to keep and pay for talent, but we sure as hell know how to develop it.

Balanced?? That lineup is not great, i am not sold on drew staying healthy.. And that pitching is eh.. Schilling got rocked, Beckett only went 5 inn vs the royals, and got some pretty hard at em balls hit off him.. And Dice k.. Its the Royals.. Overshadowed by Dice-K's performance was a pretty strong outing from Zack Greinke (making a return after leaving the game due to some emotional issues).
Dice-K: 7 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 10 K's
Greinke: 7 innings, 8 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 7 K's
And Greinke was facing a MUCH stronger lineup.

Hes never been a hard thrower? Are you serious? Why do you think he has so much strain on his elbow? Maybe hes not a power pitcher, is that what you mean?
An I will repeat what I said above he will throw 4 inn 2 k's and leave the game.
His box score 4 inn 3er 6 hits 3 walks 2 k's.
I have always like Andy he was a great post season pitcher and clutch. I think he will have a avg season at best. For what they paid him he is over paid this year. He will get the wins but so did Randy and everyone had a cow.
BTW Jeter had another error tonight, when will the boo boys be out for him? They already booed ARod.\

Noooooooo Coco in leadoff. He had one of the worst OBPs last year, especially when batting leadoff. Youk was great at it. He should stay there.

I understand that the team is coming into this year thinking that lugo leadoff will give him a chance to steal, especially in the middle innings with Coco, AP, and Lugo supposedly with speed. But AP has no speed so why tease us with this perception that we're going to have a running team this year.

Good thing he doesn't play in New York or for the next three weeks we'd be subjected to typical Mike Lupica idiocy.
"Why is the fire dormant in Ichiro's soul? Can he handle playing in New York? Is he losing his desire to play baseball? Is the postseason not enough to arouse his desire? Why is this glory hog only interested in these high profile showdowns? Trade the bum while you can."

They spent tons of money on Beltre and Sexton so they have the funds. And those contracts will be off the books by the time Hernandez is eligible for free agency.

I agree with you about Wally. But considering we have a ballpark with under 40,000 seats we need every revenue stream we need. So yeah Wally is stupid but the kids all love him. As long as he doesn't block my view with his big green head he'll be alright.

do you think they'll ever add more seats by removing the green monster
or
building a new park ??
Dan 'Hampton
04-16-2007, 02:33 AM
Last week before the home opener it was mentioned that it should see it's 100 year anniversary and then be replaced. I was for a new Fenway before but against it now. It would be like blowing up Yankee stadium and building a new one..... Oh wait.
The team had plans to build a new ballpark before. The plan was to move home plate back 50 feet, building around Yawkey Way. Even Ted Williams said he would be glad to see Fenway go. But if they DO build a new stadium I don't want it designed with another Monster and a fucked up layout. The idiosyncracies of Fenway should not be replicated -- just like with the Boston Garden.
Dan 'Hampton
04-16-2007, 05:05 AM
I don't see a new stadium any time soon. The team has bought alot of property around fenway but it seems they're turning those areas into restaurants, bars etc in an effort to make the whole neighborhood fan friendly. Then again I am probably completely wrong. And if there ever was a new stadium it needs to be the same dimensions as Fenway. It just wouldn't be right without the monster or the triangle.
I disagree simply because for years the policy was to build a team around the ballpark: "he'll hit well in Fenway". Fuck that.
Dan 'Hampton
04-16-2007, 05:33 AM
I think that Fenway as a hitters park has been proven BS. I know Shilling had reservations about coming here because he thought it was a launching pad. But he was shown stats that showed otherwise. And if anything the 04 win was because the team was based on pitching. of course it also had a great offense. Just as long as the architects who designed city hall don't do it i'd probably be fine. But I would think in a history ridden town like boston the team would build a replica.
