Continuously watching the replay of Lofton being held at third made me think of something; didn't the Red Sox used to have an AWFUL 3rd base coach like 4 years ago?
I remember he used to send people all the time that had no business running. And people basically wanted to kill him.
I think it was Dale something. He had a weird last name, I think. Svuem or something.

That was the guy. I remember him as a Brewer in the late '80's when I still collected baseball cards. Wendell Kim was right before Sveum and was just as bad.
Ahh, the life of a major league base coach.

That's like how Ronnie said they had to stop him from coaching 3rd because he loved a play at the plate and would send everyone.
But on a side note, one thing I love about ball players is whenever they win or clinch something the celebration always includes cans of Bud Light. I love that they're keeping it classy in that regard. There's no Cristal poppin, its just straight Bud Light.

You have no idea how frustrating it is to have to wait til 3 in the morning for cnn latin america to get thru telling me futbol scores from around the world, just so i can catch the red sox score every night.
but man, you shoulda seen me the morning after game 7... silently jumping up and down in front of my ceiling-mounted tv, even running into the bathroom during the commercial break to silently scream at the mirror, trying so gallantly not to awake the young Brasileira in my bed.
I pretended that I would be able to make it thru my 11 day trip without needing to know the outcome of every game...but there I was, glued to the tv each night, and then over to the internet cafe most afternoons to see highlights.
Ok, I guess starting tomorrow, we move all this over to the World Series thread, but I just gotta say once more (and not for the last time)...
I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!:clap::clap::clap::clap::drunk::drunk::dru nk::drunk:

Why did they put Gagne on the roster but not Tavarez ?
They could have dropped Gagne for Wakefield as far as I am concerned. At least Wake would be good luck.
I like Ellsbury starting. He gives the lineup a spark they dont get with Coco and not that big a drop off in defense.
Damn. No knuckleball in the WS this year.
I feel bad for Wake. But he handled it like the class act he has always been -- putting the team first.
He deserved a WS start too: 17 wins this season and he probably would have had 20 had he gotten better run support in his early season losses -- and if he had been healthier for his later season losses.
I'm surprised they put Snyder in ahead of Tavarez.
Reading all of these prognostications that the Sox have the edge and should win the series (with some picks saying in 4 or 5) have me worried that this could be a setup for one of those "shock the world" victories for the Rockies.
I hope Tito has this team ready to face a potentially dangerous opponent.

I don't think the team listens to what anyone else says. It was like that when they were down 3-0 in 2004 and 3-1 in the ALCS this year.

The thing that would worry me the most for the Sox is heading to Colorado 1-1. The Yanks played a series there this year, were on a small winning streak at the time and they just seemed to sleepwalk through the series. That thin air can be hard to adjust to, especially if its your first time. Thats a scenario where I see the Bosox losing the series.
But my pick is still Bosox in 5. If you take the first 2 in Boston, their winning streak is a two week old memory. Then you play the real Rockies, the .500 team that played all year. Once you pop the air out of the 21 out of 22 streak, I think they'll collapse quickly. They're not that good, nobody is.
I liked the '67 team being there for the first pitch...led by Captain Carl.

Absolutely. I think Ortiz should sit games 3 and 5. Put him in for game 4. That gives him plenty of rest on that knee, especially if the series goes 6 or 7 games.
Fezticle98
10-25-2007, 09:03 PM
If Ortiz can play, I play him both days (game 3 & 4). He'll be out of the game a couple innings early for a defensive replacement if we get a lead. You can always give him Game 5 off, if there is one, against the lefty Francis, using him only as a PH.

Maybe this year. That thin mountain air can take time to get used to if you never play there, which they don't. Bosox in 6.
Here's something to chew on for the Sox fans (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/)
From the what might've been department: Red Sox owner John Henry was in favor of signing A.J. Burnett instead of trading for Josh Beckett. One could make a solid argument that the Red Sox would be better off if Henry had gotten his wish. Beckett and Julio Lugo combined for 8.6 wins at $14MM this year while Burnett and Hanley Ramirez combined for 14.8 wins at $12.4MM (according to WARP).
Damn. Thats interesting.

Thats why John Henry signs the checks and leaves the baseball decisions to professionals. Hanley will be great but Burnett is a dud. I'll take Beckett any day over Burnett. Plus we got two years so far out of Lowell.

im kinda nervous. I remember what happened the last time we were in the WS and put in the better hitting, but worse defensive plus with a bad knee first basemen over the better defender.
What I would do is start Papi tomorrow against the righty, and if you get up late in the game IMMEDIATELY bring in youk for D. Then game 4, because the left, Id prob start Youk at first and have Papi on the bench for the later innings.
I will admit it's a really tough call, and I don't really blame Tito either way, so if his choice doesn't work out, I'm still with him on it. No second guessing

Isn't Cook starting game 4? He's a righty. It makes no sense for the Rockies to bring back Francis on short rest, they need to win 4 games, not one.
We'll see how it goes tomorrow, but I'm in favor of Papi starting game 4 as well. It's a no-brainer to make a 7th-8th inning defensive replacement if we are up.

I was thinking the same thing too. And then I read this from Tito:
"Well, I think David is a really good hitter, and I think Mike Lowell is a really good hitter, and I actually think Youk is a really good hitter," said Francona, "but they won't let us play all three of them. So we'll go with this. The hope would be we'd have a lead, we'll put Youk in late. It doesn't always work perfect, but we'll do the best we can."
Plus Jacoby will lead off and DP will take Youk's #2 spot.

That's the part that wpuld worry me.
Now you're not only taking one guy out of the line-up, which you have to do anyway, but you're taking another guy out of a spot where he's been working very well ( pedroia in leadoff spot ).
I think if the Sox take Game 3 and go up 3-0 in the series that they'll play Youklas at 1st in Game 4 because he's earned it and it's essentially a throw away game.

Well, I was thinking Snyder instead of Lopez but maybe he wanted to give Okajima a bit more of a rest since he went pretty long (for him) in Game 2. And perhaps he sat Snyder thinking he may need him to go long in Game 4 if Lester gets into trouble early.
Give Tito the benefit of the doubt -- he's been juggling the lineup pretty well thus far.

With the story that A-Rod is going to opt out of his contract in NY, the FOX announcers are wondering if the Red Sox would want Mike Lowell or A-Rod. What they anren't thinking about is what if the Sox resign Lowell and then sign A-Rod and switch him back to shortstop and send Lugo packing.
Remember that A-Rod was willing to take a paycut to come to the Sox 4 years ago, perhaps he'd be willing again.

Ehh, I hope not. How long is Lugo's contract? 3 more years? So whatever you pay ARod, add about $9 mil/year for Lugo plus the raise that Lowell is going to get for a 3-4 year deal. I don't know if that is responsible spending.

Mike Lowell! MVP!
How many WS MVPs don't stay with the team the next year?
They did win. The Redsox won the World Series of baseball. That's really nice. Huh?
The season is over, lock it up.
You are correct sir, shouldn't we be posting in the "Off Season Thread" ?

As I posted in another thread thanks for sweepin those fuckin Rockies!!!!!!!! *kisses to Fallon*
Fucking Okajima. Stupid longballs.
I was thinking the same thing while I was screaming at my TV/Francona to put a rested Kyle Snyder in rather than the tired Okajima. Oh well, thank Christ it worked out. Maybe someday I can enjoy a season/World Series without sweating over every damn pitch.
This feels nice to win again. It kind of reminds me of the Celtics glory days back in the 1980s. The best part is with these young guys, hopefully there will be more to come.

I don't know how to handle all this success. I was already starting to hate some of the new bandwagon fans that have jumped on the Sox won in '04 and this is going to make it even worse.
Its a strange world we live in when the Sox win two World Series in 4 years.

Joey, I know what you mean. I've been a Sox fan since I first knew what a baseball was (last 1960's) and saw my first game at Fenway in 1970. I struggled through 1975, 1978, 1986, etc. and to be honest, I'm not really into this whole Red Sox Nation stuff since most of them are, as you say, bandwagon jumpers. But to win two WS in the past four years is unimaginable. What next, the Bruins winning The Cup?
I also think the video of the Sox dancing really sums up this team as a bunch of guys who are really having fun. You would never see that with the Yankees.

how about crisp, ortiz and dice k with the old bubble gum on the hat joke last night?
try and do that to mussina, youll get punched. or get fined for breaking a joba rule.
these guys are classy and fun, a tough mixture for sure. everyone on there is a perfect fit... except maybe for drew. we definitely dont need to be adding arod into it.

Okay, but that's because you haven't seen them win anything lately. I'm sure if the Yankees (or any other team) were celebrating a World Series title last night, they'd look as 'fun-loving' and 'close-knit' as anyone else.

how does it feel to share the ESPN News Headline with "A-Rod Opts out of Contract"
must make you feel good, that America is talking about where will A'Rod go and Who the Yanks will hire. Instead of your Sweep.
: I hate the Yanks, this irritates me as an anti Yankee Fan:

further proof that arod is a mere prima donna who needs attention. he waited til what appeared to be the final game of the world series, when every one would be watching, to make his announcement, even though he had 10 days to do it. sad.
and yes, its sad too that people seem to care more about one player than the best team in baseball. but as the lad above said... i really dont care about arod.
MY RED SOX ARE ONCE AGAIN WORLD CHAMPS!!!!:clap::clap::clap:

I'm glad you brought this up because I could not believe FOX spent a huge part of - was it the 8th inning? - talking about A-Rod. I'm not even a Boston fan and I was insulted. WHO CARES? The game was about those two teams, not the Yankees.
Just awful FOX.
Are where were the camera shots of bars in Denver and Boston. I always love those reaction shots when they show people in bars go nuts. NONE this year, that I saw.
Congrats to Red Sox fans, but FOX gets a thumbs down.

No doubt this team was better than 2004, but that team will always be THE team. Great year for the Sox. They really seem set for a long time with all the prospects who already are delivering on the highest level.

Rioting fans smashed automobile windshields, trampled on cars and lit small fires ...
The crowds were smaller and more orderly than in 2004
That made me laugh.

Ho hum, so after winning another World Series what moves should be made in the offseason to keep it rolling next year?
My thoughts:
1. Resign Lowell
2. If Schilling is willing to sign for #3 or 4 money sign him. If he wants to paid as a #1 or 2 guy let him walk.
3. Ellsbury has to be the CF next year so get rid of Coco. Thanks for the great D Coco but you don't get on base enough.
