Not sure if we have an actual World Cup discussion thread, so here goes...
A few injuries to report:
Didier Drogba (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/05/sports/soccer/05drogba.html) out for Ivory Coast (there goes Ron's bracket)
Rio Ferdinand (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2010/06/world-cup-englands-rio-ferdidand-out-of-world-cup-.html), captain of England out with injured knee, improving the USA's chance of getting out of group play.

that's a fair addendum, once the US is kicked out,t hen u can cheer for your heritage team
plus you can cheer for you heritage team as long as they
but if you cheer for England over the US... you should be forced to pay a high tax for Tea

one reason is the pathetic diving that seems to be endemic in the sport:

South Africa's keeper just saved their ass.
Sometimes, being the home team gives a side a boost that advances them much farther than you'd think they should be -- for example, South Korea, or even the United States in 1994.
This will not be one of those years.

Pre-game is at 1:30. ESPN has been hyping that 1:30 time, but if you pay close attention they say "coverage begins at 1:30." Coverage aka fluff pieces, commercials, opinions, commercials, match predictions, commercials, maybe even a U2 song.
I'll just turn on ABC at 2:30.

More than your career.
I don't know what to think of that first half. England's goal was kind of lucky, just a little lucky bounce started it, and after it USA had more control of play. They didn't have nay huge chances but had consistent pressure. Maybe that was because England was trying to sit on the lead? Then USA gets that gift goal and England puts much more pressure on in the final minutes of the half.
So i don't know what to expect out of the 2nd half.

Very content with that result.
That second half reminded me of the Confederations Cup last year. They had their pressure through a few runs by their strikers but most of the game is spent in their own end just barely hanging on. I have no confidence in that back line however. They managed to keep Rooney in check but everyone else was having a field day.

That was quite a game I think you'd all agree. There was more than a few sighs of relief around my friends house when the final whistle blew, that's for sure. From an England perspective I think Emile Heskey played brilliantly and shut a good number of people up who have been on his back for years.
Team USA were ver solid I think and could easily keep grinding out results. I think a team with a bit more fire powere tthan England though could break you down and get goals. That's the only thing that would concern me as a USA fan. England looked pretty good in most areas but just lacked with the final touch I think. The midfield pairing of Lampard and Gerrard seemed to finally click.
I hope everyone enjoyed the game and i really hope both teams can kick on and get into the knock out rounds from here.

This shows how different American sports are from the rest of the world: 3 out of the first 5 games of the World Cup, including the most heavily hyped one, have ended in ties, and no one seems bent out of shape.
Meanwhile, if there's a tie in the NFL, which usually happens about once every 3 years or so, it's a disaster, and you have people wailing "OMFG WE MUST PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN!"

FIFA's said that they still might ban the vuvuzela for this world cup, after complaints from broadcasters.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jun/13/world-cup-vuvuzela-ban-tv-complaints
My problem with them isn't that they're loud -- it's that they drown out everything else coming from the stands, and that they've blown non-stop from stop to finish. So you end up with this constant, barely changing din that doesn't reflect what's going on on the field (ok, ok, the "pitch") at all. It takes that atmosphere away.

Can someone better explain the process behind loaning players for me? Like, I get the basics but I don't get why it happens. Can you imagine the Lakers letting Kobe go play in Italy for a year "on loan"? Or the Yankees letting A-Rod go to the Dominican for a season? Why do soccer clubs let their players go places on loan? And what about the risk of injury while they're gone?
Teams loan out their players usually young prospects or old guys to other teams, in other countries or lesser divisions, so they'll get playing time.

Yeah, it would be like the Lakers loaning their 9th guy out, not Kobe. Also similar to baseball how you'll draft someone and send them to your minor league farm team.

A loaned player cannot play against the team that loaned him though.

they're really not. they've still got a good shot at being the 2nd team out of that group.
