Dave adds an element to the show that is sorely needed ... really, he's the only other member of the team carrying any gear. If you knew the show from over the years, Fez has increasingly been dealing with personal issues and the addition of Earl as producer has been good for a flying cowbell and the occasional Ron tirade, but really... without Dave, the interesting factor in the show goes south quick. That's not to say that the show is not intensely interesting but let's face it - it's mostly Ron these days.

The thing I really like about Dave's performance on the show is his unbridled transparency - he has no idea that a 30 year old man should hide the fact that his 3 year old nephew gives him a boner and that kind of stuff is worth the price of admission into the cringe theater that is Ron, Fez (and dumb Dave)... most recently Dave brought a microphone out onto the street and made a spectacle of himself that would have landed him in a mental hospital if it weren't the city. I've been listening to RnF since they came to WNEW wayy back. (BAC:25142) and I have to say I can't stand dave he makes it difficult to listen sometimes. Ron really hit the nail on the head today. it seems as if he is afraid that a second might pass that he isn't on the air and being wacky...making fez cry in a bit that was soooo unfunny it was really bringing the show down. hopefully the outcome of this is that we don't hear from him for a while.

I hear what you're saying, but here's my issue with him. Dave turned heel today in spectacular fashion. And then one segment later we're back and he's got the Tullamore Dew weepy voice on. That REALLY infuriated me as much as anything. Heel Dave, interesting, but this crying guy act makes me think the whole segement previously was NOT a work.

Fez has stepped back some, you are right, but I think thats because Dave's prescence has allowed him to. FORCE Fez to step again by FIRING Dave. Send him to fucking Joe Poo land. I hope Fez comes back wishing for a miscarriage.

This is a strange divide, trying to ascertain where the line lies between bit and reality. Ronnie is constantly "Carnies and Rubes" but today, I don't know, it seemed really mean spirited and Dave went for the jugular on someone who hadn't attacked him because he couldn't lash out at the big dog. Not knowing Fez personally, but seeing the line blurred between work and shoot on the air, Fez seems to me to either be constantly worried about his reputation as "stent-boy" or just fighting it off beneath the surface. A miscarriage is an awful thing, its life and death, but so is that to Fez, and just because Ronnie got in Dave's kitchen, there was no call to cross THAT line in THAT context. Fez needs to show some fight, and I'd love to see him go nuculear on Dave off the bat. I'd be equally satisified, again, to see him vanish into that Joe Poo Siberia of never being spoken of again.

Veru little censor is one thing but going to far is another thing. If he has hurt Fez's feelings to the extent it appears, he has a lot more than feeling bad for this. Fences need to be mended.

Getting back to the whole 'slaveboy-Dave-Fez' debacle for a moment, there were many things I didn't like about this bit from day 1 and I'd like to say why I think it didn't work.

First of all, many of the gags were visual, which tends to not work well on the radio. Making Fez wear a dog collar and do the show shirtless? How the fuck do I know? Why should I care?

Secondly, there was no build up to it. The bet was made while the boys were on vacation and the details were posted on the messageboard. Without any on-air tease of things to come, it just kind of materialized this past Monday morning and seemed curious and nonsensical.

Finally, and most importantly, the bit crossed a line. Ron Bennington was, is, and always will be the Alpha male of the Ron and Fez show, and therefore is the only one allowed to abuse Fez in any way, shape or form. Could you picture Rory or Al Dukes or Billy Staples or Wonderboy or any other producer from years past ever raising their voice (let alone hand) to Fez? Bit or not, it was uncomfortable (for me anyway) to see Fez allow himself to take a subservient position to an underling.

I’m disappointed in Dave but I don’t believe that firing him is the answer. Fez was clearly angry and frustrated with Dave and lashed out at him for several reasons. First for taking the bit to far and physically hurting Fez, and secondly for disrupting Fez’s come back. In my opinion I think that Fez is probably frustrated with the growing roll that ESD as played on the Ron & Fez show. Now I understand that Fez has had some health issues, but it seems to me that every time Fez starts to make a come back, Dave jumps into the conversation and tends to take over.

If Dave is fired, the Fez looks like a bad guy. He looks like the guy who got a man fired who has a child on the way. A dismissal of Dave is a no win for Fez. I don’t believe that Fez wants to have Dave fired, I think that Fez wants to have Dave take a much less active roll in the program. I think Fez wants to be Fez again.

The sad part of the show today was that Dave’s habit of pushing things to the limit (his on air problems with Earl, his shit eating, the bagel in the ass) to contribute to great radio is the reason that Fez got hurt/angry. Dave didn’t have the intent to hurt Fez but his actions clearly resulted in Fez leaving the show.

Before my answer to this thread, I contend this was an attempt at some radio saavy gold. This isn't the first time we've been given something that seems quite serious, and then it pans out into a set-up bit. Remember last year with Fez quitting the show and Ron pulled it off brilliantly for the first thirty minutes, until he said that Fez said Fuck XM radio and the listeners? I think this might be a set-up via Ron to salvage something from the Slave week debacle. I think Dave might have been played into doing what he did. Then again, his crying sounded pretty fake to me.

That said, I find Dave highly annoying at times, but innvaluable to the show. He's on the show for a reason. Ron has perfectly cast his show full of people with complete dysfunctional problems. Each with their own set of odd behaviors, annoying habits, and yet there is a touch of humanity that Ron likes, and so do we. At least to an extent. Ever notice how Ron pulls one of his cast into the spotlight for a day or three and the others fade into the background? How he pits them against each other to create tension and fascinating radio?

This is not a ramshakle show full of people's problems, just randomly bubbling to the surface each week. Ron uses them and their quirks to make the show what it is.

So, while I do find Dave, self-centered, sociopathic, grandiose and unerringly annoying I do believe he is a intergal part of the show.

Just a thought.

I've actually thought some about the way yesterday's show ended. I just don't like it. If is a bit -- and I'm pretty sure it is -- it's not a funny bit at all. If it's not a bit, he's got to go.

But, more than anything, this just makes me long for the Free FM show. I think the buddays -- including ESD -- are at their best when they're just having a discussion. I'm kind of tired of the WWE-style angles that seem to dominate the XM show lately.

And I like ESD better when he's just being himself and isn't playing some character. That includes not taking intentionally stupid positions so vehemently, and not always trashing Earl and/or Lily (I cringe when he pulls out the "Muzzie" shit), and maybe, just maybe ,not screaming so fucking much.

I think this is funny as hell. The thread starts off as the penultimate anti-dave thread and just as always it goes to everyone flaming each other. This is why Dave "appears" to be the neurotic fuck-up we see him as and alot of people have come to hate. Everyone knows you'll all be back tomorrow to hear what he does next so you'll come here or to WB or FBA and post your anti-dave ramblings. That is why I listen....to be entertained, not be enlightened on the decline of western civilization, how to perform a triple bypass, or knit a rug, but to be entertained. That is what R&F and O&A do, entertain, and that why I will continue to listen. Viva ESD!!!

After 8 years of listening to Ron and Fez, I've seen the cavalcade of producers, third mic'r prospects, and regulars trying to hold court with the boys. There's only been 2 people that have impressed me. Al Dukes was the one that set the bar. He was fun to laugh at, to put down, and to pick on. Yet he was loved...even if you hated him. The only person to ever come close to him, is number 2, East Side Dave McDonald. Not only can you laugh at him, he's been able to make you laugh with him. He always has an opinion on show topics, right, wrong, or outlandish. The guy is a fun addition. His heart and body are dedicated to the show and he adds a lot.

With that said, I have NO love for Dave haters.

Okay, I will just say that Dave has from time to time pissed me off tremendously. When he spoiled the ending for There Will Be Blood, I half-seriously considered posting some "thanks for fucking up my Saturday night asstard" thread or something. I wasn't too fond of him stomping (mushing) on poor Fezzie last Friday either. So I understand a little when some people get annoyed from time to time, but to me my annoyance is more of an "irritated with your pals" kinda annoyed. The forgivable type. People would get boring if they weren't flawed anyway.

All that aside, I love Dave. I think he's made the show better, more interesting and absolutely funnier. He's a great guy in person, I enjoyed briefly chilling with him, Bronx Johnny and Wild Bill in the back of Bar9 and laughing my balls off at a story he was telling. Shame I was being a boring ass teetotaler that night...stupid random police checkpoints. DrunkOvision woulda been fun. Fuck all the haters.

ESD is to much of a freak for R&F to let him go, I just wish ESD would learn how to be a part of the talk instead of all of the talk.
The couple days without him was some real refreshing back to the old school R&F shows.
Can't wait to hear Mondays drinking show and East side being told they are letting him it's also a farewell show for him.
