Yeah no shit. And I watched the Yanks game too.

Jerry Remy said it's Extra Innings Saturday. I started laughing cause it sounded like the O&A bit.

Thank God for Okajima.

It's hurting me to say this but unless we can find another catcher for him we need to let Wake go. I know they're looking for a Mirabelli replacement but everytime I see him step in to bat I get a sinking feeling in my stomach. Last night didn't show it but he makes such a massive hole in the lineup when he's there. Maybe Kottaras is the answer.

Can we PLEASE bring Lester up?

I love this quote from Tito:

Francona also responded to comments by Daisuke Matsuzaka's super-agent, Scott Boras -- as reported by our very own Nick Cafardo -- that he would like Matsuzaka's pitch count to be closer to 100 than 120. Matsuzaka has topped 120 pitches in four starts this year.

Francona, when told what Boras had said, had a nice comeback: "You know what, I've got a lot of respect for Scott, I really do. [But] he can run the pitching when he lets me run the contracts, how's that? Is that a fair tradeoff?"

Boras, of course, negotiated Matsuzaka's 6-year, $52 million contract this past offseason.

That had to be the quickest game this season. Me and the wife were switching back between the game and The Godfather. Next thing I know it's bottom of the 9th. I still think Lester is our answer for Julian coming back down to earth but I wouldn't mind running the rotation through a few times with the two of them right now.

Ho hum: another year, another blown division lead...

A.J.,

My advice is to embrace Calvinism. This is coming from someone who saw his first game at Fenway in 1970. It was Sox-Senators who were coached by none other than Mr. Ted Williams. I also cried myself to sleep in 1975, would have strangled Buck F-ing Dent in 1978 and had to put up with two obnoxious Mets fans in 1986. But shortly after the 1986 season I found Calvinism and everything became clear.

Fezticle98
07-19-2007, 07:24 AM
2004 changed everything for me. While I am wary of the Sox blowing their division lead, I don't expect it. So, the Yankees put together 2 good weeks...their rotation is still full of holes and a lot of their hitters still aren't hitting. The same can be said for the bottom half of the Sox rotation and hitters over the last 6 weeks. At least maybe this will light a fire under their asses. The way they have been playing, it would be one and out in the playoffs, division or not.

March 21, 2001: Traded by the New York Yankees to the Cincinnati Reds for Drew Henson and Michael Coleman.

Rampant rumors that the sox WILL get both Gagne AND Dye. Wow. In Globe, Herald and EEI

The Red Sox and Rangers have agreed to an Eric Gagne deal, pending Gagne waiving his no-trade clause, sources told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
It's very possible that Gagne will block the deal, though the Red Sox could try to sway him by guaranteeing the remainder of his $3.625 million bonuses for games finished. Rosenthal doesn't say who will go the other way, though David Murphy and Kason Gabbard keep getting mentioned. Joaquin Benoit could close for Texas until Akinori Otsuka returns.

Fezticle98
07-31-2007, 11:53 AM
Dye would be an upgrade over WMP, offensively and defensively. I don't know that it's a trade they need to make, but if they can get Dye for Pena and, say, a Delcarmen, I wouldn't be against it. Pena has no future in Boston, so basically, it's a straight up trade for what will end up being a second rate prospect.

Sox need a righty bat off the bench and Dye could fill that role. He's been on fire since the break.

I don't like this trade. You give up in Kason Gabbard a young, LEFTY STARTING pitcher who has proven that he can do well for an older, injury-plagued closer? Isn't this why they picked up Brendan Donnelly last year?

They should have thrown in Matt Clement or Wily Mo Pena as part of the deal.

They had to decide between Gabbard and Lester. I think this trade was a no brainer. And the fact that the got him for much cheaper than the Yankees would have had to given up for him is great. Murphy is a good prospect but with them having to find a place for Ellsbury next year there wasn't a place for him. The 17 yr old potentially has great upside but he's only batting about 200 in GCL. Who has a better pen than Paps, Gagne, Oki, with Delcarmen in there as well? We just need a bat.

A.J.
08-01-2007, 02:41 AM
I would have offered Craig Breslow instead of Gabbard.

Most GM's are calling this trade a win for the Sox. I think the key to this deal was the 18 year old Dominican kid, not Gabbard. Plus, throw in the whispers about Paps velocity declining in the past few weeks and the way the shoulder issue played out last year and this is (at worst) a great insurance policy. They didn't give up Buscholtz or Masterson.

Don't think though that there's any chance you'll sign Gagne. He's a Boras client, so this is a rental. Boras doesn't do extensions.

BTW-Look at Gabbard's minor league stats (http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/G/Kason-Gabbard.shtml). Not great. He's a soft throwing lefty who needs to hit spots and change speeds to get guys out. Guys like that get clobbered if they're just a little off. Don't get seduced by a few good starts first time around the league.

A.J.
08-01-2007, 03:02 AM
I know the upsides of this deal. It's just that I have been forever scarred by the short-sightedness of the 1988 Jeff Bagwell-for-Larry Anderson deal!

Dan 'Hampton
08-01-2007, 03:14 AM
Who's the Bagwell in this scenario? I say is Bucholz and he's still in our system. We kept all our top prospects AND got the best reliever in the market. Yeah Gagne is gone after this year but trade deadline deals almost always are three month rentals. Remember OC for Nomar? Its about winning now and the management sees that they can win the WS with the guys they got. Don't forget either about Shilling who is basically a "deadline deal" He's pitching lights out against the same people i hear about Phil Hughes pitching well against. Come back to me when that guy has pitched in more than two games against horrible to mediocre teams

I know, I know -- you guys are right. It was just nice to have another home-grown lefty. OK, they still have Breslow for that to back up Lester. And the worst thing about giving up David Murphy was no longer having a guy called "Murph" on the Red Sox. That was perfect for Boston.

Yeah, I remember OC for Nomar. They should have kept him!

Dan 'Hampton
08-01-2007, 02:22 PM

Sean McAdam on EEI has said numourous times that there were some serious issues with OC that out of courtesy to the player he won't get into. But damn he was big for us down the stretch.

Ugh, sorry to quote my own post but I heard Gammons on Michael Kay today say exactly what I suspected. Theo had to give in at the last minute on the Dominican kid to get the deal done.

When the Yankees nearly moved to Boston (http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/2002/0718/1407265.html)

Hold onto your lunch, BoSox fans. This really did almost happen. If you know any of the history surrounding the Ruth sale to the Yankees, this is a fascinating read. Here's the meat of it, though.

Within weeks he "flipped" the property, secretly securing a loan of $350,000 from Jacob Ruppert and the Yankees, using a second mortgage on Fenway Park as collateral. In effect, the Yankees now owned Fenway Park.

Now Frazee's holdings were fully protected. The loan from Ruppert allowed Frazee to pay off all his remaining indebtedness in regard to the Red Sox without dipping into the money he held in reserve to operate his theatrical interests. Now Johnson couldn't touch him, his ballclub, or his ballpark.

Blocked from getting Frazee, Johnson now turned his ire toward the Yankees. He was nearly as eager to be rid of Ruppert and Huston as he was of Frazee, for the Yankees had been Boston's partner in the Mays deal and had taken Boston's side in the resulting legal battle. The battle with the Insurrectos had stripped him of most of his power. That left Johnson, aptly described by one associate as a man "who never forgets an enemy," with only revenge on his mind.

Ruth, of course, would be a huge success as a Yankee, cracking 54 home runs in 1920 and proving to be the biggest drawing card in the game. The Yankees, without a ballpark of their own, leased the Polo Grounds from the Giants. In 1920 they were outdrawing their landlords for the first time. Johnson sensed an opportunity.

The Yankees' lease of the Polo Grounds was up at the end of the season and plans for their own park were still far in the future. In mid-May of 1920, Johnson approached Giants owner Charles Stoneham and urged him to throw the Yankees out on their ear. That would leave Ruppert's Yankees homeless in 1921 and Johnson could force a sale. Johnson even promised Stoneham he could handpick the new owner.

Stoneham was intrigued. With Ruth, the Yankees were starting to hurt the Giants at the gate. If he could arrange for a crony to buy the team, well, that wouldn't be a problem anymore. He readily agreed, and informed the Yankees he would not renew their lease.

But neither Johnson nor Stoneham yet knew that the Yankees would soon have a place to play -- Fenway Park.

New York's threat was made possible on May 25, when the loan to Frazee went through. If Stoneham failed to renew their lease at the Polo Grounds, the Yankees had an option in 1921. They would simply play in their ballpark in Boston, creating the Boston Yankees.

I was going to bring that up. You traded Arroyo for a guy you just basically gave away. And to replace Arroyo you had to spend 100 mil on Dice-K. I remember Arroyo pitching some very good games vs the Yanks, so far Dice-K hasn't been as good against them.
But Arroyo hasn't been good this year (5-13 on an awful team), though he was very good in 06 and you guys REALLY could have used him last year.
Overall, Dice-K is probably a better pitcher but that doesn't mean you couldn't still use Arroyo on the team. Either as a 5th starter or from the bullpen.

We bitch about how robotic some players are, and then bitch about how Shilling speaks his mind. What the hell is he supposed to do? Papi selling his car on ebay is great. If anything this regime owning the sox has turned them into an extremely fan friendly (so long as you don't actually intend on attending a game at Fenway. So if he wants to sell his car directly to a fan and maybe give the fan a pretty cool interaction with him good for him. Sorry guess i'm becoming jaded by listening to Boston sports talk too much.

The only Yankee rookie I've really pumped up is Joba because he deserves it. He's been throwing controlled, ridiculous smoke. Hughes has done nothing to deserve the hype he's gotten so far and the jury is still out on Kennedy. I'm not saying the kid sucks, I'm just saying don't give him a huge amount of praise because it could all fall apart. He did good today. Great. But don't call him the second coming of Roger Clemens.

The only way he''ll be that is if they give up on him halfway though his career.

Congrats on the No-no last night! That must have been quite a thrill. Its exciting enough just watching the young pitchers come along, and no hitters are always a great by themselves. Put the two together and thats a night you'll remember forever.

And unlike our rookie who had a no-hitter going in his 2nd start, yours didn't blow out his hamstring in the 7th.

He keeps pitching like this and he'll end up getting a post season start. Hughes is doubtful to get one at this point.

As good as some of the Yankee rookies have been, is there any doubt in anyones mind that the Rookie of the Year in the AL will be Dustin Pedroia ?

The guys has come up big at the plate and made the biggest play of the game last night to save the no hitter.

Where has Gagne been ? Seems like last night would have been a good night to have him pitching the 9th instead of Papelbon three nights in row.

That trade has been crap for us so far. They may have been better off letting the Yankees get him and letting him blow games there.

I don't know if he or JD Drew has been more disappointing this year.

On the plus side though..Ellsbury is fun to watch play. I would have been cool to have seen him have a chance at the cycle last night and still get the win.

Manny has been out a week and we are not giving away any games thanks to the callups, the future is looking solid so far.

With all the young talent on both teams the Yankee - Red Sox series is going to be fun to watch for years to come.

Yeah, I laughed at the "second coming" comment. He does his own second coming SOMEWHERE every season.

By the way, who left the back door open for the yankee fans to slither in the past few days?
I understand they wanna hang out in the champ room... but theyll have to wait til next year.

Last night's game was heart breaking.

I mean, again... it doesnt matter for shit, but to have such a lead AND have a better bullpen, but still let them creep past us.... awful.

So the number remains at 11.

Tonight's game is gonna be interesting.
2 Cy Young hopefuls.
Beckett folded last time he had this much pressure (vs Clemens), but I think he'll hold up.

I predict another one run game.... but whose one run will it beeeeeee????

I even had a date with a girl who asked me, "Is that why theyre called the red sox, because of that pitcher?" (...just one date).

So yeah, if youre part of a legend, youre legendary.

Clemens will be remembered most for having the most "last games ever". (second only to Sinatra in retirement performances).

I definitely agree.. Any day of the week.. But i would take El Duque over any of them.. That does not make him Legendary..

AJ.. I see where your getting at also.. But i just think that Schilling is just below the 1st tier that can be called Legendary.. He is great in big spots though..

if you're going with that gimmick, schilling would be a phillies pitcher. btw, what's with the announcers acting like he was a hard-luck loser last night? his era for the game was like 4.7...he should lose that game every time. so the runs came in the 7th, instead of the 1st...he still gave up 4 earned runs.
