I've come around to thinking it's a pussy move to charge the mound no matter who you are. You are running at a guy who can't afford punch you with his dominant hand, or either hand really.
You'd think the Red Sox would have this down:

As opposed to intentionally hitting a guy in the ribs when you don't even have to go up to bat, letting your team mates take the hit for you ?

Any Mets fans have inside info on Jose Reyes? I want to drop him from my fantasy team but I'm waiting for confirmation that he is going to miss the rest of the season.

Yeah I know, but myself, I am pretty sure I would want to rush the mound too when its that obvious someone is intentionally throwing at you and possibly threatening your livelihood.
This one is going to end up costing the team though, with a big series coming up with the Rangers and another one with the Yankees coming up and a suspension looming for the best player on the team.

Lets not forget that it cost the Tigers their starting pitcher as well. I'm not sure how well he was throwing tonight, but it is the goal of the hitters to bounce the starter as early as possible.

That's the second night in a row Youk got hit by the Tigers and Rick Porcello has only hit one batter this year and it's been Youk twice.
The suspension won't bother me, Lowell came in for Youk and hit two homers tonight. This will give Tito a few games without having to shuffle the lineup too much.

I love picture 6 where Leyland and Francona exchange pleasantries. Its like in hockey where the goalies start fighting each other just for the matchup aspect of it all.

It also gives the Sox a third baseman with the range of a corpse.
I'm surprised Youkilis didn't go after Leyland, given the Red Sox history of beating up decrepit old men.

Nats offer Strasburg record contract (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4401500)
No one knows how much it really is, but its definitely more than Prior's 10.5. From other sources i've read, its believed to be in the 14-16 range.
If he doesn't sign there, you can't really blame the Nats for not trying....that's an awful lot of money for a guy who's never thrown a major league pitch.

I hate this guy already (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/nationalsjournal/2009/08/to_sign_strasburg_nats_must_in.html)
The record-setting deal that the Washington Nationals have offered to No. 1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg will have to grow if Strasburg is to sign, said a source who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of negotiations. The specific amount of the Nats' current offer to Strasburg remains unknown, but it exceeds the $10.5 million awarded to Chicago's Mark Prior in 2001, still the record for an amateur pitcher.
According to the source, Washington's current offer has been on the table since the team's ownership group, along with president Stan Kasten and acting general manager Mike Rizzo, traveled to California last week to meet with the 21-year-old pitcher. The fact that Strasburg hasn't since agreed to a deal, the source said, "should tell you enough."
Almost all involved, to this point, expect the negotiations to go down to the final hours, if not the final minutes. Strasburg has until midnight on Monday to sign with the Nationals, who drafted him some 69 days ago with the first overall pick. If he does not sign, he will be eligible for the 2010 draft, and can perhaps spend the interim period playing independent ball. Agent Scott Boras, who advises Strasburg, might also explore the option of sending the right-hander to Japan.
Scott Boras is pure evil :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:
I'm assuming most of this is posturing, because Boras takes every single one of his draft pick clients down literally to the final minutes, but i'm still not optimistic

Of course.....then he could re enter the draft next year, and play for one of those wonderfully run franchises in Kansas City, Pittsburgh, or San Diego, and at the same time, have every one in the league gunning for him and loathing him ala JD Drew. And miss an entire year of pro ball, or go play in Japan (as Boras has threatened) and turn into a pumpkin or rip his arm up like Jordan Zimmermann.
This absolutely shows everything that is wrong with Major League Baseball. They can't even run a fucking DRAFT correctly. A draft by purpose is designed to help bad teams get better, but the bad teams stay bad because they pass on drafting guys because they can't sign them. Imagine if Detroit had to draft another guy first overall instead of Matthew Stafford, simply for the fact that they could "sign him". It makes NO SENSE at all.

its one of the reason why i love the NBA draft and the way it works. you get drafted and you can only make X amount of dollars for your first 3 years, thats it. no other way around it. lebron wasnt allowed to hold out and ask for a crazy contract just the same as the last guy picked wasnt allowed to do it.

SEATTLE - Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre might reconsider not wearing a protective cup. Beltre was put on the 15-day disabled list with a severely bruised testicle Thursday, one day after taking a hard one-hopper off the bat of Chicago’s Alexei Ramirez to his groin area in the ninth inning.

Beltre was put on the 15-day disabled list with an injury to a testicle Thursday, one day after taking a hard one-hopper off the bat of Chicago's Alexei Ramirez to his groin area. Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said the Gold Glove infielder is out indefinitely, and could need surgery because of bleeding in a testicle. Beltre does not wear a protective cup because he says it's uncomfortable. After fielding the grounder in the ninth inning, Beltre rushed a throw wide of first base for an error. He winced in pain but finished the game, which the Mariners won in 14 innings.

The divisions almost become irrelevant, as in this plan, every team plays every other team an equal amount of times. I think the divisions only exist to maintain the regional rivalries we all love.
Billy Wagner (http://sny.stats.com/mlb/playerstats.asp?id=5536) has been traded to the Red Sox for two players to be named later.
The Red Sox agreed to not pick up Wagner’s option for 2010, but still can offer him arbitration, thus compensating Boston if Wagner chooses to sign elsewhere in the off-season, which would be the likely scenario since he wants to close.

Mets to use accrued personal days and call it a season
The New York Mets say they will ask general manager Omar Minaya to use the personal days they have saved up the past few years and just not come into work for the remainder of the season. "This is what those personal days are for, aren't they?" said second baseman Luis Castillo. "We are going through a tough time right now and I think it's best for everyone if we're just not here. And I say this with authority as one of our lone remaining uninjured veterans." But Minaya says it's unlikely he will allow the entire remainder of the team to take time off. "Do they think I want to be here any more than they do?" said Minaya. "If it was up to me, I would have been at the beach since June. But we are professionals, so we still have to show up every day. And I'm proud to say that while the Mets do very little else, they at least show up at the stadium every day."

At a hastily arranged press conference this afternoon at the White House, President Barack Obama announced San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum will head up a brand new executive branch of the federal government: The Department of White Sox Pitching.
“Tim brings great leadership qualities to this important post,” said the president. “Primarily his mid-90s fastball and his devastating curve.”
The president says he realized the need to federalize the White Sox pitching staff after seeing them implode this weekend against the Yankees.
“At this important point in the season, with so much to lose, I can’t sit by and let the White Sox fall completely out of the playoff race,” Obama said. “It is in the best interests of the nation that we have a competitive final month of the season.”
Lincecum will leave his job with the Giants and begin pitching with the White Sox immediately.
“It was a tough decision. I wanted to win with the Giants,” said the reigning NL Cy Young award winner. “But the president insisted I would be providing a great service –- and if not to the nation, then to him.”
The creation of the new executive branch that will support White Sox pitching has been met with great opposition by Republicans –- as well as from some Democrats who are Cubs, Tigers, and Giants fans. But sources within the White House say that even if Lincecum is stripped of his powers, such a move wouldn’t come until well after October, which would be long past the department's policies would make their desired impact.
“Now that Secretary Lincecum is in place, I look forward to him filling his staff with some great public servants,” said the president. “I have developed a list of potential candidates that includes Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Zach Greinke and others.”

The fact of the matter is, I think Thome is fine with his place in baseball history. He knows that he is a cinch hall of famer, and that his strength as of now is as a pinch hitter or DH. He knows that Loney is a superior first baseman, and that he can only hit effectively to one side of the diamond anyway. He makes the Dodgers better, and he wasn't going to win anything with the Pale Hose this year anyway.

There has to be some sort of law between Colletti and Kenny Williams making deals with each other. I'm not sure its legal to have that much stupid together all in one room. The universe may collapse on itself.
Yeah, he's a FA after this season.
I get that Kenny Williams lucked his way into a WS ring in 2005, but it's ridiculous how so many sports analysts here line up to fellate him over ridiculous trades that are done clearly just to make a move. Granted, moving older players at this point who are about to be FA's actually isn't that bad and this is more on Colletti for being dumb, but I'm talking about the Peavy trade this year and the Griffey trade last year. People here reacted to the Griffey deal like Williams is some kind of genius and created a time machine and brought back Griffey from the 90's.

Its about sportswriters to an extent. Plaschke LOVES Colletti because he's not Paul DePodesta, whom he views about as favorably as Satan. I'm assuming Williams gets a free pass from a lot of the media up there because he's not Ozzie (who he hired). But as you've said, some of the moves Williams has made in addition to the ones you've mentioned above (the Alex Rios deal most egregiously, and other great moves like signing Darin Erstad to a contract and trading for Scott Podsednik) just boggle the mind beyond all reasonable understanding.

He, like Minaya did for several years, will get the benefit of the doubt because no sportswriter wants to be the guy who writes the slightly too critical, too early, article and get a possible racism tag thrown on him.

You can't argue NL vs. AL on that one...the Phillies have a better offense than every team in the AL sans the Yanks, and the game was at Citizens Bank Park.

I kind of would like to see the Twins pull it off, too, but you have to give it to Detroit...their ownership really did right by their fans this season, considering how awful things are in that city right now, and they're going to lose a TON of money this season.
They could have decided to gut that team and sell off all the pieces last offseason once it became clear how bad the economy was going to affect that city, but they did the right thing.
This could be the last hurrah for this core of Tigers...I'm sure the ownership is going to have a tough time maintaining next year.

we'll have to agree to disagree
would you want macha to pitch to pujols if needed some record or stat achievement

Absolutely. Unless the game "calls" for the IBB, you pitch to the hitter.
That's why men play the game.

still i dont see how its larussas duty to do it
plus it wasnt entirely meaningless a phillies loss and a cardinals win would have tied them record wise and im not sure what would have happened there
loser would face dodgers while the other gets colorado
now keep in mind i have no idea what the timeline was so maybe phillies game was already over but they went extras and started early so they coulda been both still playing

A. Phillies game was over.
B. LaRussa had pulled half of his starting lineup. In fact he had a catcher in the game who was playing for the first time ever as a professional.
So save me the "Tony was trying to win the game" line, it doesn't play on this one.
Its not Tony's duty to have the pitcher groove one to Fielder. It is a disservice to Fielder to intentionally walk him in that situation. Lets face it, Tony LaRussa is a classless asshole.

like i said i wasnt sure about the timeline
even still theres no rule in the book that says you have to do anything one way or another based on situations

Fielder is lucky to escape with his life given LaRussa's track record of drunkenly murdering his own players.

Ok, prediction time:
AL Play-In Game:
Twins def. Tigers
NLDS
Phillies def. Rockies 3-0
Cardinals def. Dodgers 3-1
ALDS
Yankees def. Twins 3-0
Red Sox def. Angels 3-2
NLCS
Phillies def. Cardinals 4-3
Red Sox def. Yankees 4-3
WS
Red Sox def. Phillies 4-1 (as much as it pains me to make that pick)

i would like to see them take the last 8 teams and have a playoff too. that would rule
Award Predictions
NL MVP - Pujols
AL MVP - Mauer
NL Cy Young - Lincecum
AL Cy Young - Greinke
NL ROY - Happ
AL ROY - Bailey
NL MOY - Jim Tracy
AL MOY - Joe Girardi
i would like to see them take the last 8 teams and have a playoff too. that would rule
It would be:
NL
Nationals vs Padres
Mets vs. Pirates
AL
A's vs. Royals
Indians vs. Orioles
Padres would win the NL best of the worst. Orioles would win the AL.
O's over Padres 4-3

Wanna know why people think Tony LaRussa is a dick?
10th inning today in a meaningless game. Cardinals losing 9-7. Prince Fielder comes up with 2 runners on and LaRussa intentionally walks him.
Prince is hitting .2994 and would hit .300 with a hit. He is also tied with Ryan Howard for the league lead in RBIs.
So LaRussa walks him? What a fucking dick.
One more thing for you to cry about for the next few weeks
while real fans of real teams with real managers focus on the playoffs.
No matter what you think, an opposing teams' manager is never responsible
for padding an opponent's meaningless numbers in a meaningless game.
I'm sure Chris Carpenter's Elbow would agree.
As for me, I am riding this dick to a championship. Again.
