Since the old MLB was over 100 pages long, figured it was time to bust out a brand-spanking-new one for 2009.
Look!
There's baseball afoot!

Usually about two hours, could be a little worse during spring training. It isn't that it is that far, but I used to go to alot of home games and a few away games in Pinellas and Hillsborough when they were at Al Lang. Now because of gas and driving time (and bullshitting my way away from work) I'm going to end up going to more away games in Pinellas and Hillsborough, and try to make it to a few Rays home games.

im gonna be really excited about the mets again this year. then september is gonna roll around...
First, how the hell does Mojo start a baseball thread without pictures of the World Series Champions?
Second, I'm ready to predict five of the six divisions right now. I won't predict the NL West yet, until Manny signs with either the Dodgers or Giants.
*- denotes Wild Card
NL East
1. Phillies
2. Mets
3. Marlins
4. Braves
5. Nationals
NL Central
1. Cubs
2. Astros*
3. Cardinals
4. Reds
5. Brewers
6. Pirates
NL West
TBD
AL East
1. Yankees
2. Rays*
3. Red Sox
4. Blue Jays
5. Orioles
AL Central
1. Indians

4. Marines

I'm pretty much with you KC but I think the Mets can sneak into the wild card. It's not coming from the West and I don't see the Astros being ready yet.
And I don't think the Yankees win the division. They have the most talent, no doubt, but something about the ARod situation and a key injury and I think they won't make it.

Most talent? Their bullpen still sucks and outside of ARod and Tex their hitting lineup is filled with guys on the decline.

Let me put it this way. The Mets SHOULD win the Wild Card fairly easily. Talent-wise, they're no worse than the third best team in the NL.
And this year's NL field is weaker than last year's.
I just can't pull the trigger on picking that team to win anything at this point, though.
Most talent? Their bullpen still sucks and outside of ARod and Tex their hitting lineup is filled with guys on the decline.
Yeah, but I expect a little bit of regression in Tampa, and I'm not overly impressed by that Red Sox team. Lowell's on the decline, Varitek's on the decline, Ortiz is on the decline... Drew could go either way...
Yanks can ride their starters in that division. Should score enough runs to atone for some bullpen slips this year.

CC, Burnett, Wang, Joba, Pettitte. If healthy, big if sure, no one's close. Still have Rivera too.
And you say outside of ARod and Tex. Yeah, take away 2 of the top 10 hitters in baseball and sure, the lineup isn't great. You got a point.

Yeah, but their bullpen is arguably even worse than it was last year.
Plus it's almost a lock Burnett will miss time.

CC, Burnett, Wang, Joba, Pettitte. If healthy, big if sure, no one's close. Still have Rivera too.
Rivera is one guy. Pettite is getting older and on the sharp decline. Will Joba make it most of the season? Will Wang bounce back from injury? Burnett's almost a lock to miss time.
And you say outside of ARod and Tex. Yeah, take away 2 of the top 10 hitters in baseball and sure, the lineup isn't great. You got a point.
I can't blame you at this point.
Two guys are still just two guys. When you surround them with a bunch of question marks and declining, oft-injured vets, there's only so much they can do.
The Yanks are obviously no slouches, but it's a pretty big leap for them to surge past the Rays AND the Red Sox. There's way too many questions.
hammersavage
02-12-2009, 05:20 PM
I put them behind one of those teams, I think their question marks will be enough to keep them out of first, but not the playoffs.
Take the two best hitters off any team and baseball and tell me who doesn't have as big of question marks.
Yeah, but their bullpen is arguably even worse than it was last year.
Plus it's almost a lock Burnett will miss time.
I don't know...it's hard to forecast most bullpens.
But I agree on Burnett. Still, they've got Hughes and Kennedy still sitting around. That's decent depth, talent wise if Burnett misses time.
And I believe if the bullpen is an issue come May/June, Joba's back in the 'pen.

I forgot Hughes and Kennedy were even in the mix. They have to do something eventually or be of some value via trade, no?

Take the two best hitters off any team and baseball and tell me who doesn't have as big of question marks.
Obviously, but I'm not taking them off the team. I'm talking about the team around them. Again, they can only do so much on their own. How much time is Damon gonna miss? How much time is Matsui gonna miss? Is Jeter going to shit the bed for big chunks of the year again? Giambi's gone. They simply don't have a lot of offensive depth for a team that's had serious DL problems recently with players who are only getting older.
I forgot Hughes and Kennedy were even in the mix. They have to do something eventually or be of some value via trade, no?
I'm under the impression they'd move Kennedy, but will sit on Hughes until they finally break ties with Pettitte in a year or so.

Cardinals might pick up Juan Cruz (http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/commishs-hot-stove/commishs-hot-stove/cardinal-beat-updates/2009/02/carpenter-dishes-while-little-dunc-deals/) in a sign-and-trade with the DBacks getting a prospect in return. Motte-Cruz-Perez makes for a nice 7-8-9 backend of the bullpen if that deal goes down.
The Cardinals noted a recent MLB ruling that allows a so-called “sign-and-trade” that would allow a team to sidestep losing a first-round draft choice when acquiring a Type A free agent. The ruling is pertinent to the Cardinals because of their passing interest in reliever Juan Cruz, who finished last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Under a Commissioner’s Office interpretation, the Cardinals, for example, could acquire Cruz by having the Diamondbacks technically re-sign their own free agent then flip him to St. Louis in a trade. The Cardinals would forfeit a prospect as compensation rather than their first-round draft pick. General manager John Mozeliak said he was still seeking further clarification. However, the ruling would allow a team to reach agreement with Cruz’s agent before having the D’Backs assume the terms. Any snag in the subsequent trade would nullify the deal.
Oh, and fuck the Cubs/Mets/Red Sox :bye:

Jose Guillen is a freaking nut job (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/royals/story/1043320.html)
he nail was only a slight irritant Monday when Guillen reported to camp but soon worsened from the pounding caused by various workouts.
"The doctor saw me (Wednesday)," Guillen said, "and he said we’ll see how it feels in the morning. If it wasn't any better, he wanted me to have surgery. I thought, 'Whoaaa.'
"So I went on my own (Wednesday) to the pharmacy, got some tweezers, came home and pulled it out myself. Let me tell you, I cried. I had one tough hour. But I got it out."
Guillen said the nail had hooked and twisted deep into the skin.
"I reached in there (with the tweezers)," he said, "and poked around until I got the end of it. Then I counted one, two, three and just pulled …. Oh, my God. It came out, but tears were running down my cheeks."

If you still plan on making the trip to Port Charlotte from Tampa, you won't be disappointed. I visited it over the weekend and the facility is absolutely gorgeous, and this is coming from the biggest Al Lang Field fan in the world.

ManRam could be signed by tomorrow morning:
The offer is a two-year, $45 million contract, with salaries of $25 million the first year and $20 million the second, but the second year is a PLAYER option so Manny can walk away if he believes he can get more on the open market next winter. If he is injured during the first season, the second year becomes guaranteed. (http://www.insidesocal.com/dodgers/2009/02/dodgers-make-of-2.html)

My money would be on Manny refusing the deal at this point and not Boras. Boras is abrutally tough agent, but 2 years for $45 fucking million?!? Boras isn't stupid. That's an amazing deal.

Someone has to be offering him something or he's gotten wind through Boras or whoever that team X is out there. I can't believe though that if another team was pursuing him and able to offer him a ton of money that it could be kept in the dark like this.

I don't know how I survive the winter months with no baseball on the radio.
Carpenter managed to gtet through two great innings without breaking anything
but so far Franklyn is the pitching star. 5 K's in 3 innings.
Also, look out for Joe Mather.
Manny was in the dugout but didn't suit up.
Anyone settling in to watch some Sunday afternoon baseball? Red Sox vs. Twins is on MLB Network.

The Feds have him under investigation (and have for some time) for skimming from the bonuses paid to Latin players (they fired Jose Rijo, his top assistant sometime last week). There's also a huge thing with a Latin player they signed that turned out to be significantly older than he was listed as.

You remember just what made him so endearing a year ago in making the Dodgers relevant in L.A. once again, the last time we spoke yet another joke closing out his stay in town: "Gas is up and so am I."
Reminded now, he laughs. "No, gas isn't up any more, but the price of milk is the same."
"I cannot control what people might think," Manny says. "The economy is making everyone adjust. I will be happy to play for L.A., win and win a couple Gold Gloves just like Andruw Jones."
"Tell everyone Mannywood is coming -- now go call Jeff Kent."

Uh, oh, get ready for some serious trade wars, people...JUAN PIERRE WANTS TO BE TRADED.
Juan Pierre has requested a trade from the Dodgers.
"I understand the situation, and if they hadn't signed Manny, it would have been a surprise," said Pierre. "I'm not bitter about it. I totally get it, you know what I mean? But I want to play. So they gave us permission to talk to teams and try to find a situation that can work out for everybody, and that's all I can ask for." It's going to be really, really tough to move him in this economy. The Dodgers would probably have to pick up almost all of the $28.5 million remaining on the five-year, $44 million deal he signed three years ago.
He better hire some extra agents to deal with the flood of offers.

Dontrelle Willis is mentally unstable?
Tigers placed LHP Dontrelle Willis on the 15-day disabled list with an anxiety disorder.
"This is not depression," Willis said Sunday. "This is something totally different. This is something where they saw something in my blood that they didn't like. I'm not crazy, though my teammates might think that I'm crazy." He went 0-2 with a 9.38 ERA in eight appearances this spring and wasn't going to be a factor in April anyway.

The more and more I look at Florida, the more and more I think that team is being WAY undervalued.
And with the Giants over the Dodgers, the Giants pitching is just sick. They should be able to score a few more runs this year.

The Team Marketing Report released its annual survey Thursday and said the average price of a Yankees home ticket was a major league-high $72.97, a 76.3 percent increase from last year's $41.40.
The Boston Red Sox, who had been first for 13 consecutive years, were next at $50.24 following a 0.3 percent rise. The Cubs were third at $47.75 after a 10 percent hike, followed by the New York Mets, who rose 8.6 percent to $36.99 for their first season at Citi Field.
I can't see anyone in the NL Central (or the entire NL, for that matter) stopping the Reds this year.

The Rays brass asked to open at home and were flat out denied. Personal opinion? It's Selig throwing 68 pounds of weight around until the RFO lock down a new stadium deal.
While its possible that Selig did do that, it also seems to me that Selig generally doesn't get involved in schedules. My example would be the Brewers.
Milwaukee requested to NOT have the Cubs as their opening series and got exactly that. Then they also got the Cubs for Mother's Day weekend as well. As a matter of ticket sales, this is horrible scheduling for the Brewers and not even they could get their way when they requested changes.
Since we are on the topic of schedules, I would like to point out what a bunch of douches the San Francisco Giants front office are.
Each team that opens the season get 4 days to play the first 3 games. Since it is April, most team scheduled Monday, and left Tuesday or Wednesday open in case of weather. Not San Francisco as they chose to play Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday so that they could squeeze in an extra exhibition game against the Dodgers on Sunday and give their guys a day off.
Now it is scheduled to rain/hail this afternoon in San Francisco and the game is in serious jeopardy of cancellation, which would cause a future doubleheader/or loss of a day off during the grind of the season when those days are valuable. So much for playing on Monday to create a buffer for weather.
Add to this, Thursday is the get-away day and normally is scheduled as a day game for the visiting team. The Giants decided to start their game that day at 4:05 on the West Coast instead of playing a 1pm game like most teams. Why does that suck? After travel, the Brewers should be back in Milwaukee by 2-3am for their home opener at 3pm on Friday against the Cubs.
Seriously, the Giants are a dogshit organization.
