be fair, go look at ratings. EPL games on NBCSN do better ratings than hockey

sure, bc I made THAT comparison right? not to mention WAY too many just watch whatever is on ESPN no matter what happens and hockey is on much more obscure networks bc ESPN wanted soccer-like prices from the NHL...they told them to fuck off and it was a glorious thing
oh and for the umpteenth time, I want hockey to stay as popular as it is...so it doesn't get bastardized and fan fucked in the face...just look at the NFL's changes

ESPN doesnt have soccer anymore. Maybe occasionally a spanish game but they lost most of their soccer rights to NBC.
And, maybe you didnt specifically bring up hockey, but you said lets be real, no one watches soccer. And thats incredibly far from true. It gets pretty big ratings, esp for having completely moved off of both channels it used to be on
spoon

good ratings for soccer...just as the recent ratings for hockey, in a strike year surprisingly, were good for hockey
it's completely fair, just as brining up espn and soccer the way they had it for a long time and still push it like crazy...so much I can't watch the channel...well that and other reasons

So you want to force a team to overpay bad players just so it seems like they are trying to compete ?
Is there anybody on the Astros that warrants being part of a $75 million payroll ?
I get your point that teams shouldn't be allowed to just mail it in to get money but there's gotta be a better way than making them pay players ridiculous salaries. And then passing that on to fans in ticket prices.
Houston was in the World Series a few years ago so they're not like some other teams ( Pittsburgh for the last few years for example ) that don't try to compete.

this. I get the idea of the salary floor, but forcing teams to spend money will only serve to artificially inflate players values. They were going to do a thing in the English soccer league where they were going to force teams to have a certain number of english players, but all the teams complained that all it would do is overprice every english player while teams battle to get enough good ones.
You cant force teams to spend money. If you have a cap structure thats low, like basketball or hockey, it can work because the floor is low enough not to inflate salaries.
But if you set a 150 million dollar cap, the floor would be wayyyy too high, the best players would be under paid and most everyone else would be over paid.
They only way it could work is if you put in some revenue sharing tax and then a rule that teams had to spend the money they received from the tax. That way, at least then you would have some kinda thing where the richest teams are paying for the lower teams players and it wouldnt get so out of hand

no, there would be a better spread of talent and one team wouldn't dominate the free agency market year in and year out when they step in money (LA) or always had it (NYY). Is there anyone the Astros could have kept, gone out and made their team more competitive and NOT paid lower than a few other team's farm squads? A big huge fucking YES. It works, helps competitive balance and sure as shit protects fans of any team from the cheap owner ilk cashing rev sharing paychecks, which Houston fucking does, NOT so much with Pitt. Pitt breaks even and barely AFTER rev sharing, Houston is fine...or at least WAS, as they are destroying that team/org/franchise.
If a team can't keep up with the rigors of a 75 million cap, it needs to move. Also, I've done the math in the past on the 75/175-150 caps and it pretty much evens out to the amount paid currently with the disparity. in the end, it just spreads the talent, keeps the big money from just buying everything they want/need and raping lesser markets of their stars, while keeping some power and stability for those very teams as well. for LA and NYY, they'd come down. but it would probably protect overzealous owners too like LAA and others that don't get it done but overspend like crazy MUCH more overbearing on the values of players and market breaking than making the Astros in a BIG market from going on the cheap and reaping the rewards of rev sharing under a "rebuild".

honestly, it's a question I struggled with and it can go either way
the NHL forced the teams to get it down, but I wouldn't be averse to some grandfather in rule where you have to get there under some time frame linked to contracts
I would LOVE to see teams keep their stars more often, like Beltran in KC versus his big market team tour. Then you'd have their market much stronger again, like the Brett days, not the grienke for a few years shit.

Oddly enough, the nhl just did that too and would have to be a part of it too for it to work in any reasonable timeframe. In the NHL everyone gets two to use this and the mext and they do not count vs the cap, but they must be paid out.

The problem with it is baseball is so insane on money. Hockey was able to force them down because even the highest salaries were still within range of the cap. Baseball, teams would have to go down so much or up so much. Its insane. Esp when you have a team like Houston who is literally getting ZERO tv ratings

Interesting. The nba also has the most convoluted cap ever, and I won't even pretend to understand it. Another option would be to go with a five year (or whatever) plan and have the floor/ceiling move toward the eventual goal a little bit each year.

You can go over to pay your own guys. But have to pay a huge tax which gets bigger for each consecutive year you are over. Plus you can pay your own guy about 20mil more than any other team because you can offer him an extra year that other teams can't

the NBAs cap only gets confusing because of the exceptions they put in to allow teams to sign guys when they are over the cap. The NBA doesnt use a hard cap, thats why its weird. Its a soft cap.
Essentially, you can go over the cap to keep guys you already have. You can trade for guys but money has to match within 30% (increasing to 50% next year). Otherwise, the only way you can sign a guy if you are over the cap is to a league minimum or to your exceptions. you get a free 3.5 mill exception every year (5 mill if you are not over the luxury tax line), which is kinda pointless but). You can also take on salary exceptions in a trade if you are trading with a team who is under the cap.
Thats about the small and skinny of it.

The Astros are a disaster on the field (three strait 100 loss seasons), and off. Was reading an article about the 0 rating they got and it mentioned the teams TV network is only carried by 40% of the providers in the Houston Market. Way to utilize the advantage of being in a top ten market.

Head to head this year:
Tex over TB - 4 games to 3
TB over Cle - 4 games to 2
Cle over Tex - 5 games to 1
Seems like they'd have to play some kinda round-robin, or at least rock, paper, scissors.
But, nope.
Cleveland would have gotten to host the first game today vs. TB, even though TB had the better record between the two?
Winner moves on.
Tex would have then traveled to the loser for a second game to see who got the other spot on Tues?
So Cleveland could have lost the first game, and still got to host the rangers for another chance?
And the rays would have gotten a second chance at their place if they had lost?
And Tex would have only gotten one shot, on the road, even though they won their series over the rays?
That doesn't seem right, but apparently that was the plan in the event of a three way tie.
Glad it didn't happen that way now.

I dont think he was in the basepath. I think its a ridiculous call to make. That being said, the throw should never have went to 3rd. It looks like he tried to get up to chase the ball. I dont think his feet were up trying to trip him.

It was right next to the 3rd base bag. If Middlebrooks was trying to get up to chase the ball, why did his feet come up ? If you are on your back on the ground you would roll over to get up not lift your legs.
You can't deny that they interaction between the fielder and the runner had to slow the runner down. I don't even think that the intent of the fielder figures in to the call
It was a bang bang play and the call had to be made. Maybe next year with the video review it may have ended up in a different call

Which nobody will continue to go to
Supposedly the reason the Braves want out of Turner Field is that there's no public transit to it, and there's not much around it.
So they move out to shitty Cobb County. Brilliant move, dicks.
The South should just stick to college football which is all they care about anyway.

The thing on deadspin said parking and access by public transport and highways would be improved at the new site, and the new site is also in the middle of the highest concentration of season ticket holders.
And I really dont want to look at marlon byrds fat, underperforming ass everyday.

Miggy wins 2nd MVP
Agree with it. A lot thought it should have went to Trout , sure Cabrera struggled in September but he was injured and played thru it.

I agree on both MVPS.
Do not agree on Trout being 2nd. His numbers were not worthy of 2nd especially with his team being terrible. Not that it matters but Davis should have been 2.
Every award has been pretty fair.
I think Maddon deserved coach of the year but Tito is a fair choice.

Why should it have went to fucking Trout?

Some of these hack analysts on MLB thought Trout was a strong candidate
Even if Trout had similar numbers generally speaking MVP awards rarely go to players on bad teams
Trout and Goldschmidt were compelling arguments for MVP, but you cannot dispute the overall impact Miggy and Cutch made for their respective teams.
If it wasn't for Chris Davis' home runs, Miggy would have been the first player to have won back to back Triple Crowns. That has never happened before. His batting is Rogers Hornsby-style.

no offense to Davis and Baltimore, bc there is NOTHING to this other than my hate of MLB, how it's run and of course Selig
yet MAN I hope it comes out Davis was juicing/HGH in a big big way (if he did only of course), bc I'd LOVE to see Selig blame Arod for it all again and having a back to back Trip Crown taken away for a guy playing amazing for all his ailments would be so amazing to see how they deal with it. AROD!!!!!!!

yah I have to agree though
HOW does he not have to testify when he's being accused, questioned and all for very good reason? I want both these assholes to go down, but Arod to get paid still.

just missed it, but did hear parts and Arod is now on record showing his disdain, but also his ignorance
does anyone believe for a second he was clean THIS time when everyone else involved here that MLB went after just up and accepted the penalty? albeit the normal first offenses in most cases and none as harsh as Arod's suspension, but really, Arod was the clean one of this bunch…YOU?
both he and Selig need to just go away

Go testify, show your evidence.
Selig is a coward.
